his holiday season, E-town will become Christmas TreEtown thanks to the Elizabethtown Holiday Task Force. The group, supported by the Elizabethtown Chamber of Commerce and Elizabethtown Borough, will bring a variety of events to town to celebrate the holidays. “We’ll be kicking everything off with a tree lighting on Tuesday, Nov. 30,” said Carissa Ressler, chair of the event committee. “This will be happening at The Elizabeth, which is the old Moose building at 18 N. Market St., from 5 to 8 p.m.” The evening will feature carolers and an outdoor coffee shop. “Families can go inside and make ornaments to hang on the tree, and they can visit with Santa outside.” The Elizabeth will also host a series of movie nights, beginning with “Elf” on Thursday, Dec. 9. Additional films will be “It’s a Wonderful Life” on Friday, Dec. 17 and “The Star” on Wednesday, Dec. 22. All films will be shown at 6 p.m. The task force is also featuring a Santa’s Flights Brewery Passport program, highlighting three local breweries. “People can purchase Santa’s Flights Passports and visit Cox Brewery, Funk Brewing and Moo-Duck Brewery to enjoy flights of beer,” Ressler noted. Participants may purchase passports at Funk Brewing, 28 S. Market St., beginning on Wednesday, Dec. 1, and will also receive a souvenir ornament at each location. The

passport program will run through Wednesday, Dec. 29. LIV E-Town, a community outreach project run by downtown Elizabethtown businesses, will be holding a “Merry Grinchmas” event on Saturday, Dec. 4 from 3 to 7 p.m. The event will feature family-friendly holiday activities, including coloring contests and cookie decorating, as well as a meet-and-greet with the Grinch. “ We’re also promoting our local light shows at Messick’s and Stone Gables Estate, which will have a drive-through display,” Ressler noted. “Then, the big event to close everything out will be our New Year’s Eve event called ‘Welcome 2022,’ which will be hosted at Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church from 3 to 7 p.m.” It will feature food, including a chicken barbecue, as well as music and activities for kids and families on Friday, Dec. 31. The church is located at 125 E. High St. The idea for Christmas TreEtown came from Bob Price, executive director of the Elizabethtown Chamber of Commerce, Ressler said. “He had worked at Penn State, and they did a similar thing and he thought it would be a nice way to make the holidays special in E-town,” she stated. “We started brainstorming ideas of what we could do to bring everybody together to celebrate. How can we make the holidays magical for everyone?” For more information and updates or to purchase tickets for the movie nights, visit Discover Elizabethtown’s Facebook page.

The parade will spotlight the joy of the holidays in small towns and will mark a return to a traditional parade after last year’s reverse parade held on the Elizabethtown Fairgrounds. “The parade is always very well attended,” said Karen Eberly, senior program coordinator for GEARS. “We have judges who give out prizes, and we get a variety of participants. It’s a fun way to spend a Saturday.” The parade will travel on Market Street from West Bainbridge Street to Winnemore and Mechanics alleys. Although the parade won’t have bands this year, since local high schools have opted out due to the pandemic, it

will still feature a variety of elements, Eberly noted. “We’ll have lots of awesome floats,” she stated. “If you like parades, you definitely need to come out for this one.” Participants will include local businesses and organizations, churches, Scout troops and the Elizabethtown Fire Department. The parade is sponsored by T-Mobile. “It’s going to be a lot of fun, and it’s a great way to start your holiday season,” Eberly said. Sponsors and participants are still being accepted for the parade. For more information, contact Lee Eckert, program coordinator, at 717367-0355 or leeeckert@get intogears.org.

If all good things must end, then it was only a matter of time before the Lady Bear volleyball team saw its magical, historic 2021 season come to a close. However, knowing the end is coming does not make it any easier to handle, which means a 3-0 PIAA-4A quarterfinal loss to North Allegheny on Nov. 13 still stings. Despite the outcome not being the desired one, interim head coach Karen Eberly remained positive. “The girls’ volleyball team had an historic season this year! First time the team had made state playoffs. First time that the team has won a state playoff game,” she said. “The four seniors on this team have created a legacy to be proud of. They all contributed this year. But this team will reload,” she continued. “ We had two juniors and three sophomores who also contributed this season. There is other talent ready to step in and fill the seniors’ spots.” As for the season-ending loss to the Lady Tigers, Etown was able to hang around but was unable to take control, falling 25-15, 25-20, and 25-15. Sydney Stewart, one of two Lady Bears named to the 2021 Pennsylvania Volleyball Coaches Association (PVCA) All-District Team, tallied 12 digs, 10 kills, and two aces in her final high school contest.

Kallee Locker, E-town’s other member of the PVCA All-District Team, wrapped up her high school career with a three-block afternoon. Angela Costa-Ouimet, another one of the four seniors mentioned by Eberly, tallied 12 assists. Paige O’Connell rounded out the team leaders, matching Stewart’s two aces. ALL-STARS As November zips along, more Lancaster-Lebanon League All-Stars get recognized. Elizabethtown joined the fun recently, occupying a few spots on the cross-country and girls’ soccer all-star teams. Jordan DiRisio was the only member of the XC team to earn All-Section status, making the first team in Section One. The Bears did have a slew of All-Academic all-stars with Emily Bonsall, Julia McAlonis, Sierra Kapcsos, Julia Sikora, Ruth Wright, Katrina Hook, Owen Gensemer, and Max McCloud all making the cut. Jess Gilbert was the lone Lady Bear to enjoy All-Academic status for the girls’ soccer team, but E-town did have three players make first or second team All-Section. Taryn Hummer made the first team as a defender while Josie Spayd joined her on the defensive end. Jena Witters missed out on first team status but did land on the second team as a forward.

Caregiver To Speak To Women’s Group Women of all ages and preschool children are invited to attend Neighbors Sharing and Caring, a women’s ministry of Chiques Church, 4045 Sunnyside Road, Manheim, on Tuesday, Nov. 30, from 9 to 10:45 a.m. Glenda Heisey will present “Depending on God When Someone Depends on You.” The lives of Glenda and her late husband were changed in an instant when her husband became quadriplegic. After the accident, Glenda was her husband’s caregiver, and when he was able to return to work, she stayed at home so she could be available if he needed her. The PGC Southeast F&C personnel include three full-time employees who provide the overall management of state game lands in Pennsylvania. Game lands maintenance supervisor Tyler Hudock explained that the youths’ contribution helped to ease these employees’ workload. “The time they spent painting these boxes allows our crew to spend time on other habitat pro-

Officer Kelly Osborne, community service/public information officer with Troop J - Lancaster, mentioned that a retired trooper will dress as Santa Claus and the fire company will be decorated with a Christmas tree. Parents should plan to pickup their children around noon. Osborne said she was excited to announce the return of SWAC. She noted that the

program strives to positively impact children ages 6 to 18 in Lancaster County who have had police contact or been victims of unfortunate circumstances. The purpose of the program is not based solely on financial need, but also on the goal of fostering positive relationships between first responders and youths. “I’m really looking forward to enjoying it and interacting with the kids this year and go all out,” said Osborne. “My volunteers loved it last year. Before I reached out to them this year, they asked, ‘When are you doing Shop With a Cop again?’” See SWAC pg 9

The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank (CPFB) announced the receipt of a grant from Conagra Brands Foundation to help provide food to children and families in need. This grant will enable the CPFB to increase its capacity to distribute food to its partners through the purchase of new pallet jacks and other essential warehouse equipment. The gift will also help the food bank expand its equity, diversity, and inclusion programs to address inequities of hunger in communities of color. Conagra Brands Foundation has partnered with Feeding America, a domestic hunger relief organization, to help address hunger in communities where Conagra employees live and work. Conagra locations in central Pennsylvania have partnered with the food bank for more than 20 years, with employees actively volunteering their time and supporting various events and initiatives such as Summer Feeding Programs for youths. New this year, Conagra Brands Foundation made an additional funding commitment to enable food banks to address racial and equity disparities in local communities. The CPFB is committed to addressing these inequities in the months and years ahead and is working with its partners to make sure these communities have access to nutritious food. For more information on CPFB, visit www. centralpafoodbank.org or call 717-564-1700.

Bridge Of Hope Posts Staff Changes, Award Bridge of Hope Lancaster recently announced that Audrey Metzler has accepted the new position of director of church engagement and Talita Hall has been named program director. Bridge of Hope Lancaster works to end family homelessness for single mothers and their children through a comprehensive program of professional case management and informal social supports, called Neighboring. Neighboring volunteers from local Christian churches seek to be a source of healing and hope by providing tangible support and networking and by offering encouragement. Families receiving Bridge of Hope services work with professional case management staff to achieve safe and sustainable housing, financial stability, and whole family strength and resiliency.

Bridge of Hope Lancaster was also recently awarded the 2021 Achievement Award at the annual Bridge of Hope Conference. The Achievement Award was presented to the Lancaster organization for attaining 120% growth this past year in the number of families served and connected with Neighboring volunteers. The goal for the coming fiscal year is to serve more than 20 families. Bridge of Hope Lancaster plans to hire an additional case manager by 2022 to meet the needs of the community and end homelessness for more families. The organization is a part of the national Bridge of Hope Network of 26 locations across 13 states.
