“All Is Calm” Highlights Peace On Earth BY CATHY MOLITORIS
When Susquehanna Stage first performed “All Is Calm” five years ago, the cast wasn’t sure how the audience was reacting to the 80minute show. “There really isn’t a break in the action, and there’s no intermission, so the audience was very quiet,” recalled Jim Johnson, who is directing the show again this year. “We were wondering what they thought, and then when it ended, they just burst into applause.” The show was so well received, in fact, that all performances sold out from word of mouth after opening night. “All Is Calm” will run at Susquehanna Stage, 133 W. Market St., Marietta, from Friday, Dec. 3 through Sunday, Dec. 12. Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 3, Saturday, Dec. 4, Thursday, Dec. 9, Friday, Dec. 10 and Saturday, Dec. 11. Performances will be at 2 p.m. on Dec. 11 and 12, See Peace pg 4

“We wanted to add our community, our neighborhood on South Wilson Avenue, into what we’re doing,” explained Laurie Shepler, executive director. “We wanted to build this into a bigger event.” The Trees on South Wilson, named for Cornerstone’s location at
95 S. Wilson Ave., Elizabethtown, will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 3, and from 5 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 4. The event will feature 30 themed trees decorated by local individuals, businesses and organizations. “We’ll be judging the trees and
awarding prizes for Best of Show, Most Traditional, Most Unique and so on,” Shepler said. Shopping on three levels throughout the youth center will also be highlighted, with more than 20 vendors. “The vendors have been the lifeblood of this event for all

these years,” Shepler noted. Participants will include representatives of Avon, Discovery Toys, Mary Kay, Bellflower Design Co. and Spence Candies. Sarah Lynn’s Confections will sell cakes, cupcakes, cake pops and hot chocolate bombs, and Cookies for a Cure will offer treats to benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. “ We’ll also have coffee, hot apple cider and cookies for our guests to enjoy as they walk through the building and meet our vendors,” Shepler stated. Live music will be featured next door at Moo-Duck Brewery as well as on stage in the youth center and across the street at the Elizabethtown Amtrak station, where some of the trees will be displayed. Rogue Chef’s food truck will offer sandwiches and desserts, and J&J Famous Eats’ food truck will feature a Latino menu. Esbenshade’s Garden Center poinsettias will be available for purchase throughout the
youth center, and each evening one guest will have the opportunity to win a 10inch pot, five-plant poinsettia. Money raised by tree sponsorships and a portion of vendor proceeds will be used to help Cornerstone provide a safe and caring environment for area youths, Shepler remarked. The organization’s biggest fundraiser is its annual banquet, scheduled for Friday, March 18, 2022. It will feature guest speaker David Nassar. Shepler said events like The Trees on South Wilson offer a way for Cornerstone to connect with its community while helping to support its mission of service to youths. “This is a fun, free event for the community to come out, enjoy the decorated trees, enjoy the music and holiday treats and do some shopping to benefit our youth center,” she commented. “It’s a great family event.” For more information on the event, visit https:// cornerstoneetown.org.

Matthew Sharp, a member of Troop 51 at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Elizabethtown, received his Eagle Scout Award during a Court of Honor on Oct. 10 at Landisville Mennonite Church. He officially earned the award on June 4, 2020, but the ceremony was delayed due to COVID-19. For his Eagle Scout project, Matthew restored the historic cemetery at Greenwood Furnace State Park in Huntingdon County. Assisting him with this project, Scouts from Troop 51 cleared brush, rebuilt a walking path, and cleaned and reset tombstones. This cemetery contains graves dating back to the late 1700s, when Greenwood Furnace was a vibrant community in charcoal and pig iron production. Matthew’s uncle Paul Fagley, the environmental education specialist at Greenwood Furnace State Park, guided Matthew through this project and was named Matthew’s Eagle Scout mentor. Matthew has held several leadership positions in his

agreed, adding, “It’s an honor to tell their stories. There’s laughter and there’s sadness in this show. It’s a show full of emotions.” Performing with a minimal set, the actors are all on stage for the entire show and the musical numbers are performed a capella. This setup presents some challenges, said cast member Alex Flattery. “You can’t rely on the pit orchestra for your pitch,” he said. “You have to rely on the guys to the left and right of you.” Dean Sauder said rehearsing for the show has been a unique experience. “It’s the highlight of my day to come and rehearse and to be able to participate in this show,” he stated. “It’s challenging, but it’s so rewarding to be a part of this.” The emotional pull of performing in “All Is Calm” was so great that nine of the 12

Featuring an all-male cast of 12, the show tells the true story of a Christmas truce struck between the German and Allied soldiers at the start of World War I in 1914. “On Christmas Eve, the troops came together, shared stories, played a soccer game and celebrated Christmas,” explained Steve Sturgis, who performs in the show. He added that the peace ended the next day when the war resumed. The conflict continued for another four years. The story of “All Is Calm” is told through actual letters from soldiers, making it an emotional experience, said performer Rob Hein. “There’s a poignancy to this show,” he remarked. “These events actually happened, so to be able to share the stories of these soldiers is very moving.” His castmate Clint Burdick
