When Tyler Stumpf, Billy Hecht, and a few of their friends from the Mount Joy American Legion got together 10 years ago to plan and host a New Year’s Day motorcycle ride to raise funds to support local veterans, they had no idea how far-reaching the event would grow to be. “We thought maybe it’d be one or two years,” recalled Stumpf. Instead, what started out as a fundraiser with 11 riders in year one has grown to more than 450 participants. Some folks travel from as far as Philadelphia, Baltimore, the Poconos, and Philipsburg for the ride, and each year a prize is given to the rider who wins the Long Distance Award for making the longest trek to participate. Perhaps a less-coveted prize is that of being named Baby New Year. Each year,

one lucky - or possibly unlucky - designee rides the entire first chilly mile dressed in a baby costume. Elizabethtown resident Larry Witters will have the honor of serving as Baby New Year for 2019. The 10th anniversary New Year’s Day motorcycle ride will take off from the Walter S. Ebersole American Legion Post 185, located at 255 W. Main St., Mount Joy, at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2019. The registration fee, which is a set per-person donation, will include a meal at the conclusion of the ride. Registration will open at 10 a.m., and folks are invited to socialize at Post 185, where a variety of breakfast food and coffee will be available for purchase. The Post 185 Ladies Auxiliary will serve homemade soup before the ride. A few vendors will offer items for purchase including commemorative shirts and patches for vests. See Motorcycle Ride pg 2

Mount Joy American Legion members (from left) Tyler Stumpf, Nicole Tipping, Billy Hecht, and Roland Geib invite the community to a motorcycle ride on New Year’s Day, followed by a hearty pork and sauerkraut meal. Proceeds from the 10th annual event will support the Lebanon VA Medical Center.

Convert To Code Gears Up For Hackathon A Fine And Folksy Tradition Annual Art Show To Fill Railroad Station By Chelsea Peifer

For traditional tinsmith Karen Hurd, the number of ideas she has for artwork outweighs the hours in a day. “It’s endless

what you can do with tin. There are so many ideas in my head that I’ll have to live another two or three lifetimes to try them all,” said Hurd, who resides in Quarryville. Bringing ideas to life through artwork is one of life’s greatest joys for Hurd, who said that whenever she steps into her workshop it makes See Art Show pg 3

ty ride has raised more than $125,000 for the veterans who utilize services at the Lebanon VA Medical Center. Organizers attribute the ride’s success to its timing - not a lot of other local rides are scheduled on New Year’s Day - and also to the fact that all of the funds raised go directly toward local veterans, with no overhead or administrative costs. Organizers would like to raise at least $25,000 this year to reach or surpass the $150,000 mark. Icy conditions and freezing cold temperatures last year meant that it was the first time the ride portion of the event had to be canceled, but Stumpf said that nearly 200 people still showed up for the meal at the Legion and raised more than $23,000. For more information, readers may call Stumpf at 717-4686197 or Hecht at 717-283-6379.

Organized by members of Post 185, the ride is open to the public and not only to motorcyclists, but to drivers of any other vehicles who would like to participate to honor veterans. The approximately 25- to 30-mile ride follows a scenic route along the Susquehanna River through Marietta and Bainbridge. The ride will finish at the Elizabethtown American Legion Post 329, located at 240 N. Hanover St., Elizabethtown, where a traditional pork and sauerkraut meal will be served in the banquet hall. More than 100 pounds of mashed potatoes and 160 pounds of pork and sauerkraut were prepared last year, and any leftovers go up for bids at the close of the event. Attendees may also bid on items at a Chinese auction, including motorcycle merchandise, gift cards, and more. Stumpf and Hecht said that in the past nine years, the chari-

Wooden geese, crows, and ravens are some of the Pfoutzes’ bestsellers, and the couple will be introducing angels made from driftwood at this year’s show. The show’s organizers and exhibitors consider the railroad station, which was originally constructed in 1881 and renovated in recent years by the Manheim Historical Society, to be an ideal setting for the event, describing the atmosphere as warm and friendly. In addition to perusing the art show, attendees may purchase freshly roasted peanuts outside the station, where an old Manheim peanut oven will be in operation. The Manheim Historical Society museum and the model railroad display located adjacent to the railroad station will be open to the public, as well as Stiegel Glassworks 1976, located at the rear of the railroad station. her feel like saying, “I’m home!” “It’s where I belong,” shared Hurd. Hurd has been creating tin wares for decades, and some of her tin ornaments were even used in the White House holiday décor during the Clinton presidency - an opportunity that presented itself after her work was displayed at the American Folk Museum in New York City. Hurd will be among the local and regional artists exhibiting original wares at the 2018 Christmas Folk Art Show at the Manheim Historical Society Railroad Station, 210 S. Charlotte St., Manheim. The annual show is set to take place from 3 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 14, and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 15. Admission is free, and complimentary holiday refreshments will be available. In addition to Hurd, the exhibitors and their crafts will include Cynthia Baker, handwoven textiles, felt hats, and wool applique; Dan Barthold, pen and ink illustrations; Mike Brown, paper mache and chalkware folk art; Madeline Erickson, German stars and feather trees; Bob and Sally Hughes, pottery; P.J. Rankin Hults, folk painted paper cutting; Jim Murphy, painted furniture; Judy Perilstein, handcrafted vintage antique button jewelry; Ed and Lois Pfoutz, primitive wild fowl carvings; and Doug Shaw, wood carvings. Many of the artists have devoted followers who faithfully seek out the one-of-a-kind, original pieces that are available at the annual show. Last year’s show drew people from seven states, and Shaw recalled a long line stretching down the block on opening day as folks waited for the doors to open. “It was miserably cold out, but they were glad to wait,” Shaw remarked. Ed Pfoutz, who organized the inaugural show back in 1996 with the late Jack Ritter, said that although the show itself cannot expand due to the space limitations of the railroad station, attendance continues to soar higher and higher each year. “We had no idea it would keep going this long. It was just something that we wanted to try,” shared Pfoutz, who creates carvings primarily out of reclaimed wood. A duck hunter, Pfoutz began dabbling in wood carving as a way to

Haunted Lantern Tour To Return With “Mortality Within” in” By Chelsea Peifer

Sara Mimnall and Rebecca Wright chose the theme of “Mortality Within” for Columbia’s Haunted Lantern Tour this year because they wanted to introduce people to a not-often-talked-about aspect of the rivertown’s history. The theme will focus on the disease and poverty that struck Columbia and other communities in earlier days, discussing the presence of pesthouses and sanitariums and how much things have changed. “It shows how people suffered more than they had to because they didn’t have the

like we do now,” noted Mimnall. “It will also touch on the Great Depression and how the lack of food (and resources) can change people,” Wright added. Popular characters from past years will also reappear, Wright said, such as William Campbell, a local trapper who died from rabies and is buried in Columbia’s historic Mount Bethel Cemetery. History abounds in the cemetery and the town, and according to Mimnall and Wright, while spooky elements are intertwined on the tour, history is indeed the emphasis. The hourlong guided tours will take place on Friday and Saturday

John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 23 S. Sixth St., Columbia. Tours will step off every half hour beginning at 6:30 p.m., with the last tour starting at 9:30 p.m. Participants will follow guides to Locust Street and through a loop in the Mount Bethel Cemetery before returning to the church. To purchase tickets, interested individuals may call 717-517-2442. A specific tour time will be designated when tickets are reserved. Organizers strongly encourage people to order tickets in advance. community in 2017. The coding mentors and instructors at all of the Convert to Code workshops are all local software engineers and developers who volunteer their time. “To see some wild idea you have begin to materialize and turn from an abstract idea into a concrete organization is honestly a blessing,” shared Weaver. “Being able to sit down and look at our numbers for our first year, we reached over 150 people in over 22 school districts throughout the Lancaster, Lebanon, and York areas, which, of course, is just huge.” Since Convert to Code has now hosted numerous workshops and established more connections throughout the local area, Weaver and Martin revisited the idea of hosting a hackathon this year. “We felt we had enough momentum as an organization to go through with it,” Weaver said. “I always liked the idea of a Christmas- or holiday-themed hackathon.” Individuals who are interested in volunteering with Convert to Code may email convert tocode@gmail.com. “We are always in need of new teachers and teacher assistants for our monthly workshops (and) connections to local groups and organizations who can help spread awareness,” noted Weaver.

What exactly is a hackathon? Caleb Weaver, who founded Convert to Code with Danae Martin, explained it as a coding marathon where a person may convert his or her ideas and passions into code and build whatever they wish. Hack, by definition, means “to achieve novel and clever outcomes by creatively overcoming limitations of software systems.” Organizers encourage anyone who is interested to attend, whether they are experienced coders or have never seen a line of code. Code mentors, introductory workshops, and code starter packs will be available for anyone just starting out. Attendees should bring a laptop (not a tablet), a charger, and snacks, and they should be ready to use their imagination. When Weaver first approached Martin about starting Convert to Code, he wanted to host hackathon events throughout the year. “However, we quickly learned that we would be able to better serve the community by instead hosting free workshops to expose our participants to coding and computer science,” said Weaver. Weaver and Martin, who both graduated from Manheim Central High School in 2017, began hosting free computer programming workshops for the

respect and appreciation for people around them as a result of disconnecting from their smartphones. A common observation among the students and staff members who took on the challenge was that they had more time due to not using their smartphones or social media accounts. The goal was not just to disconnect from technology, but to also use the time as an opportunity for students to reconnect with their communities. Focusing on how disconnection from others can eventually lead to

dehumanization, the Derksens addressed human rights crises in places like the Democratic Republic of Congo, Myanmar, and Syria. As the 550 students exited the auditorium after the last session, teachers stood at the doorways with bowls of chocolate truffles. Each student was handed a truffle and sent off with the statement “You are a gift.” Lancaster Mennonite School holds chapel services four times per week at its Lancaster Campus.

Lancaster Mennonite High School (LMHS) students were recently challenged to go 48 hours without using their smartphones or social media accounts. Jimm and Kaylene Derksen, chapel speakers for LMS’s Commitment Week from Oct. 16 to 19, focused on the theme “The Good, the Bad, the Ugly, and the Beautiful” over four different sessions. They highlighted the kinds of disconnection from God and other people that one can experience, sometimes resulting from smartphone addiction. The Derksens are both certified soul care providers and also staff members at Eastern Mennonite Missions (EMM). Jimm is a personnel placement coach and Kaylene is the development director. One of EMM’s three core values is well-being. EMM seeks to improve the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing of its workers and those whom they serve around the world, as well as stakeholders. Lancaster Mennonite School students are among those whose well-being EMM seeks to enhance. Students were encouraged to fill their smartphone voids by journaling about what they noticed. One student observed a woman sitting on a bench next to her making a scarf. The student was inspired to make a scarf as a result of stopping to notice the woman next to her. In her own way, not being on her phone helped her enter into creativity. Other students shared about how they had a greater sense of

Prima will open its new facility, located at 941 Wheatland Ave., Lancaster, with a celebratory “Piano Men” concert at 7:30 p.m. on Fridays, Dec. 7 and 14, and Saturdays, Dec. 8 and 15. Prima’s history as a nonprofit theater organization includes hosting Broadway guest artists and presenting a variety of boutique musicals and concerts. Founded by Mitch Nugent, Prima quickly brought together regional and Broadway talent in more than a dozen venues across Lancaster County. Venue-hopping soon began to challenge Prima’s production teams and inconvenience audiences. Earlier this year, with the leadership of Carol Culliton of the Gunterberg Charitable Foundation, Prima acquired what was formerly the Hamilton Ballroom at Wheatland Place. A $750,000 renovation was undertaken. The new 200-seat venue offers flexible seating and staging arrangements for theater, music, film, and special events. The venue is prepared for hospitality services with a full kitchen. Free, on-site parking is available. “Piano Men” is an original concert that will feature the music of Billy Joel, Stevie Wonder, Elton John, and Ray Charles. Songs will

include “ We Didn’t Start the Fire,” “You Are the Sunshine of My Life,” “Bennie and the Jets,” and “Hit the Road, Jack.” The singers, including Diedre Cravey, Joy Lee, Reji Woods, and Jeremy Schonfeld, will be backed by a live band. Woods can be seen in “Orange Is the New Black.” Schonfeld is a rock musical singer and composer. Tickets can be purchased by calling the box office at 717-3275124 or by visiting www.prima lancaster.org. Programming plans for 2019 include a series of MainStage musicals, featuring “Disenchanted,” “Godspell,” and “Jekyll and Hyde,” and a concert series called “Altro,” including “70s Smash Hits,” “Sondheim Unplugged,” and “Motown Legends.” In order to utilize the new community resource to its fullest potential, Prima has begun a three-year, $3.2 million effort called FWD. Nearly half of the funds to be raised has been committed thus far for renovations and facility expenses. The remaining funds raised through FWD will go toward expanding artistic programming and supporting artists. More details can be found at www.primaFWD.org.

Lancaster. Kennedy has been engaged with projects involving the Age-Friendly program since 2007. Over the past six months, LASS has made presentations and convened conversations with multiple organizations and key stakeholders that directly or indirectly deal with the quality of living in Lancaster. As this educational process unfolded, a number of sparks were ignited. Lancaster’s director for countywide planning, Scott Standish, confirmed that the Age-Friendly principles are aligned with the county’s comprehensive plan under development, places 2040. Millersville University School of Social Work’s chairperson, Karen Rice, said she was excited about the opportunities that the program held for the students and older adults. Partnering with the geography department, students have begun to survey and collect data about services throughout the county. The results of this environmental scan will be mapped and shared with key stakeholders upon completion. The county board of commissioners supported the concept of the Age-Friendly program at its July 10 work session. Lancaster County Office of Aging’s executive director, Lon

Lancaster Downtowners and Landis Communities committed to help the City of Lancaster launch its five-year Cycle of Age-Friendly Continual Improvement. Presented by councilman Ismail Smith-Wade-El, the Lan-

caster City Council unanimously endorsed applying for AgeFriendly designation at its Oct. 9 meeting. Matt Johnson, the mayor’s chief of staff, will be coordinating the city’s application through AARP, WHO’s U.S. affiliate. There is no application fee to apply to join the GNAFCC, and there are no membership fees. More information about the GNAFCC is available at www.AgeFriendlyWorld.org.

Lancaster City Council took the next step toward receiving the World Health Organization’s (WHO) designation as an AgeFriendly City by unanimously approving a resolution supporting the city’s application to join the Global Network of AgeFriendly Cities and Communties (GNAFCC.) The seeds for the GNAFCC were planted in 2007 when WHO published “A Guide to AgeFriendly Cities. This study suggests eight areas that support an active and healthy environment for all ages; these include housing, transportation and health services, civic participation, employment, respect and social inclusion. From the 33 cities initially involved in the study, the network has now grown to 705 cities and communities in 39 countries. Unlike many designations that require certain milestones to first be achieved, the AgeFriendly designation is aspirational. It signifies the municipality’s intention to become more age-friendly by embarking on a five-year cycle of planning, implementing and evaluating projects that make the community a great place to grow old. The catalyst for Lancaster’s journey to learn about the WHO’s Age-Friendly initiative is the Lancaster Area Senior Services (LASS), an association of 19 nonprofit retirement communities that provide homes and services for more than 13,100 Lancaster residents and employ more than 8,200 people. LASS hired consultant Chris Kennedy to manage the project of introducing the program to

EASD board president Terry Seiders and Elizabethtown Borough Mayor Chuck Mummert joined superintendent of schools Dr. Michele Balliet in thanking the veterans who had gathered for the program in the high school auditorium. All five branches of the military - Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, and Navy - were represented among the veterans who gathered for the ceremony. Each veteran was presented with a certificate of appreciation and gratitude. High school students Julia Anderson, Madelyn Nagel, and Alaina Telenko took part in the program along with the high school marching band. Nagel delivered the invocation, Telenko read a brief history of Veterans Day, and Anderson read a tribute poem to the veterans. The marching band performed the national anthem. Students Participate In Service Day Kraybill Mennonite School held a service day for students in third through eighth grades on Nov. 9. Students traveled to Global Aid Network (GAiN) in Mount Joy. GAiN is a local organization that aims to express the kindness of Jesus through humanitarian aid. Its goal is to bring relief to those who are suffering while restoring dignity and hope to people around the world. Seventy-five students, teachers, and

Kraybill students cut towels for repurposing.

parents worked in mixed grade-level groups, packing aid kits, cutting towels, sorting clothes, and creating beaded bracelets. At the end of the day, many students said they enjoyed getting to know students from other grades and having the chance to interact while they worked. They said they also enjoyed being able to provide support and comfort to people from the countries helped by GAiN. According to principal M.J. Smith, the school has a long-standing tradition of giving

to people beyond the school during the holiday season. School supplies and money for supplies is being collected in the school office through Wednesday, Dec. 12. After that date, students in prekindergarten through second grade will work together to pack the school supply kits at school before delivering them to the GAiN warehouse.

Kraybill Mennonite School students worked on bracelets during a recent service day at Global Aid Network.
