Prayer, a Bible lesson, singing, and small group times are all part of Good News Club meetings, which will be held in a number of local school districts this spring.

and Octorara. Virtual clubs will be offered in Cocalico, Donegal, Manheim Central, and Solanco school districts. A program for sixth- through eighth-grade students will also be starting at Martin Meylin Middle School in Lampeter-Strasburg School District.

“We would like to get the clubs all restarted,” said Lisa Kilgore, director of CEF of Lancaster County, who noted that more than 30 clubs were meeting in the county prior to the onset of COVID-19. “We had 17 clubs last fall, plus a Zoom club, and we will have more than 20 this spring,” noted Kilgore. “It’s gradually rebuilding.”

CEF is an international organization founded in 1937, with an active branch in Lancaster County since 1944. “Our purpose is threefold: to evangelize, disciple, and establish children in a local church,” said Kilgore. Clubs are open to any child who attends the school where the club meets. Usually a program for students in first grade through the highest grade level at the school is offered, but in some districts kindergarten clubs are available. Kilgore noted that each club is sponsored by a partner church. “When we finish our 14 weeks (of club meetings), we want (children) to stay connected if they want to. We try to connect them to that partner church,” she said. Good News Club meetings, which are held after school, involve a Bible lesson; a memory verse; songs; games; small group time, which is called Wonder Time; and missions. Each semester has its own theme. The spring 2022 series is called “The Early Church God’s Power in Action.” The program has a rotating sixyear curriculum. Volunteers are an integral part of the program. “We try to have one adult for every six children,” said Kilgore, who noted that volunteers are trained to use the curriculum. Kilgore praised helpers who have been part of the program the last two years. “The volunteers who have stuck with us through COVID have been really wonderful,” she said. “The kids have needed to talk more.” She pointed out that

221 W. 4th St Quarryville, PA 17566 717-786-8781 volunteering can be rewarding to those who take the opportunity to help guide young lives. “We want to be encouraging to kids and families right now,” she said. “It is a blessing to us to be able to do that.”

Kilgore noted that she is grateful for God’s provision over the last few years. “Financially, God has been bringing support,” she said. “He has kept us going in better ways than we could have imagined.”

Author Event Breaks Fundraising Records

David Baldacci was featured at the annual fundraiser for the public libraries in Lancaster County. The event had been postponed due to the pandemic since April 2020, but the event still attracted over 950 guests.

At the event, Baldacci described his journey to literary success. He had just released his latest novel, “Mercy,” so the timing for the gathering was in sync with a book tour.

The Council of Friends of Lancaster County’s Public Libraries, in partnership with Aaron’s Books in Lititz and the Library System of Lancaster County, attended the annual author event. Organizers reported that 17 public libraries and the Bookmobile will each receive $1,500 from the proceeds of the event, which is double previous amounts.

Some of the libraries have already shared their plans for the money. At Columbia Public Library, the funds will be used to purchase books for the adult readers’ book clubs and the Classics Club. Meredith Hendricks, interim Bookmobile coordinator, plans to communicate with the member libraries to assess their community needs that may be

Concert To Feature Music Of Austen Family

The Trust Performing Arts Center, 37 N. Market St., Lancaster, will present “The Jane Austen Playlist: Love and Music in the Time of Regency England” at 7:30 p.m. on Valentine’s Day, Monday, Feb. 14.

The evening of prose and music will feature songs from the personal collection of English author Jane Austen. Performers will include pianist Laura Klein, soprano Megan Poff and narrator Kathy Casey Becker, with guest appearances by tenor Jay Poff, violinist Julia Hansen, cellist Adam Hansen, flautist Tyson Severin and harpist Janet Witman. The program will feature period costumes.

Klein founded “The Jane Austen Playlist” in 2019 to pay tribute to the historical music of the Austen family. Composed of over 600 songs and various instrumental pieces, “The Jane Austen Playlist” is a collection of 18 manuscripts inspired by the handwritten works of the females in the Austen family, some by Jane Austen herself.

Tickets may be purchased at www.lancastertrust.com/events.

a living trapping into the late 1970s, when he turned to taxidermy. His father’s influence led Breen to choose a career in the great outdoors. Raised in a Christian home, Breen sought to connect his faith with his work in a significant way. He has served as editor of God’s Great Outdoors Internet Outdoor Magazine, and he has written for New Pioneer, Petersen’s Bowhunting, and Outdoor Life. He has experienced hunting, fishing, and speaking throughout North America. Breen has cerebral palsy, which affects much of his right side. When he speaks at game dinners and other outdoor-themed events, he often discusses the struggles and disappointments he has been dealt, sharing how God has used his life as he overcomes physical challenges.

Each February, people buy gifts for their sweethearts and create romantic memories through fine dining and decadent desserts on Valentine’s Day. People looking to save money this year may consider the following suggestions, which focus on being creative and focusing on the sentiment involved.

While a card may be the smallest purchase on one’s shopping list, an individual can still save an average of $3 to $5 on a card by making one themselves or sending a free digital greeting.

Restaurants are popular options for couples on Valentine’s Day, but they can be busy and prices may be higher this year due to inflation. Couples may look for limited prix fixe menus at some restaurants, or they could make a meal at home using less-costly ingredients.

People do not have to spend a fortune to make an impression with gifts. Diamonds may be a girl’s best friend, but other stones are often less costly. Giving a birthstone is an alternative. If gold is out of one’s price range, many sterling silver options are just as beautiful. In addition, consider warehouse retailers for jewelry purchases, as they may have lower costs.

The cost of roses definitely goes up near Valentine’s Day, so consider giving another flower. Lilies can be lovely or maybe that special someone has a signature flower. A flowering plant, which will cost less than many bouquets and will last far beyond Valentine’s Day if given care, is another alternative to consider.

Sweet treats are the name of the game, but many popular chocolate boxes can be pricey this time of year. By planning ahead, a stockpile of chocolates from Halloween or Christmas can be acquired. Floral wire or pipe cleaners can turn bite-sized packages into a handmade chocolate bouquet. Another option is to purchase various chocolate bars and package them with hot chocolate, chocolate cookies, and other decadent items in a themed gift basket.janesfl owers.com

Author frompg 2 best served with updated technology, particularly in areas that have been inaccessible in the past. Manheim Community Library will spend the funds to purchase mobile shelving units that will allow flexibility in expanding the collection without involving major renovations. Mobile shelving units can also be moved to a new library location in the future.

The Council of Friends was formed in 2000 to support local public libraries.
