GSV Half/10K Introduces New Race Director Allison Cuthie Will Take Over 2021 Event BY ANN MEAD ASH

Wanda Sauder (left) and Alora are building a relationship as mentor and mentee, respectively, in the CrossNet Cross Jr. program for fourth- and fifth-grade students in the ELANCO School District.

Cross Jr. Mentoring Program Returns To ELANCO Schools hen Charis Pankratz, mentoring and education director with CrossNet Ministries, finished revamping the Cross Jr. program, changing it from a group activity program into an intentional one-on-one mentoring meetup, for the fall 2019 semester, she was excited to move forward. Fortunately, the advent of COVID-19 restrictions did not dampen her enthusiasm. “We did complete that year of programming, said Pankratz, who wrapped up the program in a virtual format in the spring of 2020. “We had eight students at each elementary school, so a total of 16 kids completed (Cross Jr.), and we

had some closure. When Pankratz learned that outside volunteers would not be allowed on ELANCO School District (ESD) premises in the fall of 2020,

“Our goal is to provide a safe space for underresourced (students) in ESD to connect with a positive adult, shared Pankratz. she knew that change would affect Cross Jr. “The whole essence (of Cross Jr.) was that the mentors meet with students and me at the school, which had eliminated the transportation

The result is a pilot program for five students in fourth and fifth grades and their mentors that started the week of Feb. 1 and will be held through the week of Monday, April 19. Mentors and students will meet at two locations. Those who live outside New Holland and wish to meet on Tuesdays after school may utilize the lobby of Pine Grove Church in Bowmansville. Mentors and mentees in the New Holland area may meet at the CrossNet Youth Center on Thursday afternoons. CrossNet protocol for masks and social distancing will be followed.

When Michael Kurland graduated from the University of Tennessee, he headed to Jacksonville, Fla., with an idea. “I realized there was a large homeschool contingency down there, said Kurland. “I started a homeschool PE (physical education) program. In 2003, Kurland began teaching a curriculum

Holding a safe but in-person event was a top goal for Allison Cuthie, associate director of development with Garden Spot Village (GSV) and now race director for the GSV Half Marathon and 10K scheduled for Saturday, March 27, beginning at 8 a.m. at GSV, 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland. “As a runner, I really want people to have the opportunity to run, shared Cuthie, who noted that race volunteers, most of whom are GSV residents, have been open to safe ways they can help out so the event can be held. The 2020 race was held in a virtual format. Former race director Scott Miller, chief marketing director at GSV, began working with Cuthie more than a year ago to prepare her to take over the race, which has been a tradition in the area for more than

a decade. “I spent time ‌ observing everything (Miller) and staff members were doing so I was familiar,â€? recalled Cuthie, who said when it was time to start planning the 2021 event, Miller asked if she was ready to take over. Well aware that the year would bring challenges, Cuthie took on the role.

“I am into barns,” said Lloyd Ziegler, a member of the Pennsylvania Historic Farm Structures organization. “(Members) go around documenting all these old barns because when they’re gone, they’re gone,” added Ziegler. Because of his interest in barns, Ziegler was excited to discover a chevron house door, which had been recycled as a granary entry door in the bank barn of the Zimmerman or Old Wallace Plantation along Route 322 in East Earl. Ziegler sent a photo of the door, which has been donated by the barn’s present owner to the New Holland Area Historical Society, to his friend Greg Huber, an architectural barn historian and author of “The Historic Barns of Southeastern Pennsylvania: Architecture & Preservation, Built 1750 1900.” Huber, who lives in Macungie, wrote back that the chevron door is rare because these doors are only found in southeastern Pennsylvania, and they were only utilized in 18th-century buildings. Huber noted a few examples of these doors, including one at Fort Zeller in Lebanon County, one at the Keim homestead near

Oley Valley, and one at the Moravian Gemeinhaus in Bethlehem. He noted that a few others are in existence as well. During a tour of the barn in late August 2020, Ziegler stated that he knew the house that accompanied the barn was built in 1766, but he was not sure that the barn was built the same year. “I have never Members of the board of trustees of the New Holland Area seen (a barn) Historical Society who accepted the donation of a rare where you step up chevron door from a local barn include (from left) into the granary,” Don Horning, Scott Martin, and Wilbur Horning. he said. “(Farmers) would bring grain in here ety. “As a younger person, I area was referred to as Waland store it up (at a higher helped to put tobacco away. lacetown. To promote social growth, Kurland has designed the curriculum to include teamwork and building individual self-esteem. “Parents receive progress reports after each session,” said Kurland, adding that the course makes it easy for students who are at middle and high school levels to show they have obtained all their physical education credits. Kurland, who holds a degree in sports management, will be the sole teacher during the first year. Because of COVID-19 restrictions, classes will be limited to 10 students to provide for social distancing. In the future, class sizes may range up to 20 students. Other safety measures will include taking temperatures, wearing masks and gloves, handwashing, and sanitizing class areas between classes.

Homeschool physical education classes (top photo) will be taught by Michael Kurland (bottom photo). Monthly sessions began Jan. 4.

There is a fee to take part in each session. If a homeschool co-op group wants to keep certain students together, Kurland is open to creating a class for that group. He also said the possibility of including students who are taking part in virtual schooling exists. campus, we will follow whatever the state Department of Health guidelines are at the time (of the race),” said Cuthie, who noted that everyone at GSV must wear a mask, including runners who may remove their masks at the start and put them back on at the finish. Cuthie is hopeful that this year’s event will be held live. “Even if it’s pared down, we can still offer it, assuming there are no restrictions on large events,” said Cuthie, who noted organizers plan to make a final decision before

To overcome those challenges, Cuthie has been meeting with the GSV infection prevention specialist to discuss how problems would be mitigated in certain areas. A variety of changes will be implemented, including packet pickup with little or no contact; a “to-go” style dinner the night before the race; a wave start, which sends racers out at intervals, on race day; and a finisher’s zone Cuthie is calling “Accomplishment Alley,” where pickup of medals and food will be streamlined. All awards will be mailed. A virtual option will be offered for those who choose that method of completing the run. As it has in the past, the race will begin and end on the GSV campus, following the same route that was instituted in 2019, when the race went from being a full marathon and a half marathon to a half marathon and a 10K. “On

he designed, attracting 400 students the first year, and eventually doubling the size of the program. Later, Kurland took the concept to a more urban setting in Maryland, where hundreds of students took part, some driving up to an hour for a class. A year ago, Kurland came to the Lancaster area where he took the position of youth sports and activities manager with the Manheim Township Recreation Department. His background came to the attention of his supervisor Matt Stopa, and the result is a homeschool gym class for Lancaster County students. Classes for any homeschooled children in the county were slated to begin on Jan. 4 at the Overlook Activity Center, 301 Golf Drive, Lancaster. The first session will end on Thursday, Jan. 28. Consecutive sessions will be offered beginning, Monday, Feb. 1; Monday, March 1; Monday, March 29; Monday, April 26; and Monday, May 24. Classes, which last an hour, are broken into five age groups. The kindergarten class is coed, but first and second grades, third through fifth grades, sixth through eighth grades, and ninth through 12th grades are divided by gender. Kurland noted that each monthly session is focused on a particular activity or sport. “We start out with the basic concepts and skills, and we build on those throughout the month,” said Kurland. “By the end of the month, we’re into the games ... whether it is softball or swimming or basketball.” Kurland also introduces students to games they may not be familiar with, such as gaga ball, as well as international

The third annual Christmas Tree Lane presented by BCF Group has come to an end and the winners have been announced. This event, coordinated by the Lancaster Barnstormers with the help of businesses and hosts across Lancaster County, raised over $24,000 to give back to area nonprofit organizations. Christmas Tree Lane celebrates the holiday season with businesses sponsoring and decorating themed Christmas trees to raise money for local nonprofit organizations. This holiday season, in partnership with Fig Magazine, the Lancaster Office of Promotion, Discover Lancaster, and the Lancaster City Alliance, decorated trees were placed in businesses throughout Lancaster County in an effort to draw traffic into small businesses and inspire shopping local. Members of the Lancaster community were invited to vote for their favorite trees by making a donation. All proceeds will benefit the nonprofit organizations the trees represented. The three trees with the most votes earned additional donations for their nonprofit organizations. They are Ooh La Lashes/East Donegal Constable/EDC Medical Services benefiting Walking Forward Together in first place with 2,638 votes; T-Mobile benefiting A Tail to Tell in second

“Our goal is to provide a safe space for underresourced (students) in ESD to connect with a positive adult and, through that relationship and the Cross Jr. (curriculum), be able to increase their self-confidence, their growth mindset, their self-efficacy, (so they) benefit from this relationship,” shared Pankratz, who adjusted the program to meet that goal safely. “I essentially put into a box all the materials a mentor would need each week to run the session by themselves with their student,” she explained. “I have created a handbook, and I have written out each lesson with an opening ice breaker or activity and the content the mentor is to go over. I have provided the questions to ask, and I also

encouraged them to do reflection time at the end of the session.” Looking ahead, Pankratz would like to see volunteers step up to help with the program. “I want the community to know this is an option for service if they are interested in getting to know an elementary student,” she said. Pankratz is prepared for whatever the next semester may bring. “(In the fall), we will continue with the (program) we’re doing now, where the mentor and student meet at approved locations, or if we can go back to meeting at the schools, we would love to do that,” she stated. Individuals wishing to volunteer may contact Pankratz by emailing charis@elancocross.org or calling 717-355-2454.

Spot Matmen Dominate Ephrata, E-town There is that song with the lyrics “Sometimes you say that you eat the bear and sometimes the bear eats you.” There was no question on who had the better of battling with bears on Tuesday night at Garden Spot High School where the Spartans hosted the Bears - the Elizabethtown Bears, that is - in a Section Two wrestling match. The Spartans earned a decisive 53-15 victory to improve their record to 4-0 on the year. With three pins, a technical fall, two decisions and an E-town forfeit, the home team forged a 47-0 lead before the Bears earned their first points. E-town’s Hayden Haver and Bobby Walters each registered a pin to cut Garden Spot’s lead to 47-15. But that was as close as the visitors got on this night. Another Elizabethtown forfeit capped the 53-15 victory. The night began with pins by Mason Musser and Dustin Swanson. Musser took down his opponent in the 215-pound class and Swanson needed only 46 seconds for a pin in the heavyweight bout.

The kindergarten open house will feature a Winnie the Pooh Valentine’s Day party that will focus on Proverbs 17:17a. tion, for two weeks. The club will also continue celebrating love for fur babies by hanging people’s choice of a dog bone, a heart, or a dog silhouette on the fence in front of Binns Park. Proceeds from the event in past years have allowed the Penn Square club to purchase two new bicycles and radio equipment for the Lancaster City Alliance’s bike ambassadors, equipment for Arbor Place and North Star Initiative’s Harbor House, scholarships for Music for Everyone, sewer guards for some of the sewer grates in Lancaster, park benches in the city of Lancaster, and more. In 2021, proceeds will support the creation and installation of the city’s public art program sponsored “Diversity Mural” to be installed on West King Street in July. The club is also working to adopting Penn Square and its monument through the city’s Adopt a Block Program. Club members will work at The Holiday Inn through approximately Wednesday, Feb. 10, putting names on the hearts and assembling the hardware necessary to hang them. start of the school year. The program is activity-oriented while introducing the structure and rigors of a formal classroom setting. As a first step into scholarship, the student notebook is introduced, and students begin formal steps toward reading through the Sound Sensible program. Students develop early math skills, learn a Bible verse for each letter of the alphabet, and delve into literature as they study the life of Beatrix Potter. They explore music, art, and the environment around them, and they learn to experience the wonder of creation. The kindergarten program is appropriate for students who are 5 years old through early 6 at the start of the school year. The program is still activityoriented, but more emphasis is placed on paper-and-pencil activities and structured seat work. The student notebook is expanded and built upon as a tool for scholarship. Children begin learning about a variety of subjects, including science, history, and geography, and they begin reasoning from the Bible, noted Myers. God is viewed as the author of all subjects. Both kindergarten classes use field studies to bring to life what children learn in the classroom. Students expand their phonetic awareness and segmentation in preparation of beginning to read; many children learn to read before completing kindergarten. In addition to kindergarten, Dayspring Christian Academy offers preschool programs for children who are 3 by Sept. 1. Preschool is held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:30 to 11 a.m. These programs offer an introduction to the alphabet as students learn a Bible hero for each letter of the alphabet, culminating with a Bible Character Day complete with costumes. New Choices Returns To YWCA Lancaster BY DAYNA M. REIDENOUER

A program dedicated to helping individuals in transition has made its own move. The New Choices Career Development Program, most recently sponsored by the Lancaster County Career & Technology Center (LCCTC), will r e t u r n t o i t s fo u n d i n g organization, the YWCA Lancaster. New Choices was created in 1985 to help individuals develop essential job-seeking and work skills, and classes were held at the YWCA, 110 N. Lime St., Lancaster, for many years. Later, the program’s headquarters was moved to the PA CareerLink of Lancaster County offices. Being back at the YWCA will

Deborah St. Onge

help new and existing clients access services. “The program fits a particular niche within the YWCA’s program offerings to support economic independence and opportunity. We have lots of parents who use our child care services who are working but are low income and are looking for an opportunity and support to move forward in a career,” said YWCA Lancaster CEO Stacie Blake. “ We ex pect New Choices will have many inquiries from folks getting back on their feet as well as from employers who want to fill critical roles quickly.” Although the ongoing pandemic has prompted the 10day series of classes to be held virtually, participants continue to study the existing New Choices curriculum. They receive training in areas such as conducting a job search, resume writing, and interviewing. They also learn the value of selfesteem, effective communication styles, and stress management, and students are introduced to resources in the community that help with housing, legal, and medical

issues. The program aims to preserve dignity and support personal choice. Part of its funding comes from the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development, and it is overseen by Pennsylvania Women Work, which strives to transform women’s lives through empowerment, employment, and economic independence. LCCTC Dental Assistant Program instructor Rachel Sprecher noted that attending New Choices classes at the YWCA ultimately led to her current position. “I didn’t think that I was capable of much, and I didn’t think that there was much point in trying,” Sprecher commented. “The program helped build self-confidence, which was a huge part of getting me where I am today.” New Choices classes are offered free of charge to individuals over the age of 18 who have earned at least a GED or high school diploma and are single parents, first-time pregnant women, people experiencing recent job loss, or displaced homemakers. Students who complete the course are eligible for scholarship funds for short-term education, and they may receive continued

guidance from New Choices staff members. Enrollment is open for the next series of classes. Individuals may choose to attend one week, either in the morning or the afternoon. Morning sessions, which run from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., will be offered Mondays through Fridays, Feb. 8 to 12 or March 15 to 19. Afternoon sessions, held from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., will take place on Mondays through Fridays, Feb. 22 to 26 or March 29 to April 2. Class size is limited to 10 people per session. For more information or to register, readers may visit https://ywcalancaster.org/ programs/newchoices/ or contact New Choices executive director Deborah St. Onge at 717-869-6363 or dstonge@ywcalancaster.org.
