A New Home In New Holland Aaron’s Acres Summer Camps To Move To ELANCO Area

n October of 2021, Risa Paskoff, executive director of Aaron’s Acres, was informed that the Manheim Community Pool, where Aaron’s Acres has held its summer camp, would not reopen in the spring. “In 30 days, we researched about 30 community pools,” said Paskoff. “Our team was amazing. We had to find a place.” When a relative of a board member suggested the New Holland Community Pool and Park, in the 400 block of Jackson Street, New Holland, Aaron’s Acres staff members reached out to set up a meeting before Thanksgiving 2021. “(New Holland representatives) were more than accommodating,” said Paskoff. “We needed an indoor facility if the weather was bad. We needed accessible bathrooms. They had everything.” Paskoff noted she specifically worked with pool manager Leo Ward, office manager Paula Walsh, and borough manager Dick Fulcher.

“The pool will be open for us until noon so we can have the pool to ourselves (in the mornings),” said Paskoff, who added that New Holland representatives have been welcoming and supportive, and she is excited about using the park. For more than 20 years, Aaron’s Acres has provided socialization and recreation for children and young adults with special needs ages 5 to 21. The nonprofit organization held camp at the Jewish Community Center in Lancaster until 2013. Starting in 2014, the program was hosted by the Manheim Community Pool and Memorial Park. In 2019, more than 200 took part in camp. During 2020, Aaron’s Acres held virtual camp for 50 campers. In 2021, in-person camp was held, and the organization served 30 campers per twoweek session. In 2022, camps will be held on weekdays from Monday, June 20, to Friday, July 1; Monday, July 11, to Friday, July 22; and Monday, July 25, to Friday, Aug. 5.

Teacher Award Nominees Sought WITF and Rotary District 7390 will accept nominations for the 2022 Teacher Impact Awards. The awards recognize teachers who have made an extra special impact in the lives of their students and community. The Teacher Impact Awards were established by the Rotary club in 2005 to recognize and celebrate seven teachers in public and private schools within Rotary District 7390’s area, which encompasses Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Lancaster, Lebanon, Perry, and York counties. The chosen teachers are drawn from kindergarten through 12th-grade faculty. Any student, caregiver, colleague, or school administrator who knows a teacher whose impact is felt beyond the classroom can complete the nomination form at www.witf.org/teacher impactawards. All nomination forms must be received by midnight on Monday, Feb. 28. Nomination forms can be downloaded, completed, and emailed to teacherimpact awards@witf.org. Forms may also be submitted by mail; more information is available at the aforementioned website. A committee of Rotary members and WITF staff members will review the nominations and choose one winning teacher from each county. The top teachers will be honored at an awards ceremony on Tuesday, May 24. WITF will also produce a special television program that features each of the winners. This program will premiere on WITF TV on Thursday, June 23.

judgment from a parent,” Mann explained. “ When (advice) comes from a peer, (he or she is saying), ‘I have tried this and it worked. Maybe you want to try it.’” Since the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic, mental health issues among young people have been on the rise. “The surgeon general put out an advisory for youth mental health,” said McDevitt. “(Since the beginning of the pandemic) there has been a 51% increase in emergency room visits for (girls) who have attempted suicide.” For boys, the number is up as well. McDevitt added that supports are in place for students in school, but those do not extend to the home. “We connect them to appropriate resources,” she said. Mann added, “You have a child that Kim McDevitt (left) and Rosie Mann are working to bring family threatens suicide peer support to Lancaster County. and goes to the terms of supporting the parents,” said McDevitt. “ We don’t want (parents) to be alone in this.” To fill that gap, MHALC is launching family peer support, a program that provides parents with trained volunteer peers who understand what they are going through and understand the mental health system. “Support is known to be effective,” said

Rosie Mann, family peer support program consultant, who cited national studies of family peer support that show that intervention results in better school attendance and need for fewer disciplinary supports, among other benefits. According to Mann, peers are able to interact with parents in ways that clinicians cannot. “(A peer can) take away a sense of shame and

emergency room, and the doctor says, ‘You’re all right (to go home),’ but when you go home, you still have a family whose child threatened suicide. They are in crisis that their child feels that way.” Mann said that is where family peer support steps in. “Parent education programs are part of supports for families,” said Mann, who noted that the program can help parents determine what classes and other support systems will best serve them. While clinical care is meant to produce outcomes over time, Mann noted many parents need help with daily issues. “With parents, oftentimes, they have had so much clinical care, but they still can’t get through a day. That’s where we come in,” Mann said. Mann and McDevitt both noted that family peer support can provide parents with a sense of empowerment and efficacy. “Efficacy is the power to change my circumstances,” noted Mann, who said the idea is to battle the sense of helplessness and hopelessness parents often feel. Mann said that her goal in family peer support is to halve parents’ distress and double their joy. While having a peer to share distress with provides support, sharing joy means emphasizing a child’s successes to make parenting pleasurable and keep parents and children connected in spite of the challenges they face. MHALC has plans to screen and train volunteers for the program. “We are looking for volunteers who are articulate and who have shown they can effectively advocate,” said Mann. Readers who would like to volunteer may call 717397-7461. More information about MHALC may be found at www.mhalancaster.org.

Cavod Performing Arts has announced two upcoming productions, both of which will take place at Cavod Theatre, 641 W. Main St., New Holland. Citylight Dance Theatre will present “Anchored” on Saturday, Feb. 12, at 2 and 4 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 13, at 4 p.m. This concert comprises dance works and personal stories that point to Jesus as the hope that anchors people. The dance repertoire and music selections explore identity, self-worth, and the earthly struggles that God desires to rescue people from. Several performers will share personal life stories and allegories that connect to themes portrayed throughout the show. The music includes songs by well-known artists such as Lauren Daigle, We the Kingdom, Hillsong, TobyMac, The Gray Havens, CityAlight, Steffany Gretzinger, Kanye West, and Needtobreathe. Among the dance pieces is

one about sirens, the mythological creatures that used their enchanting voices to distract sailors, causing them to stray off course and be lured to their deaths. This story depicts the destruction that temptation can cause when people fail to cry out to God for strength. Jill Hertzog is the show’s artistic director, and Lillian Ortiz is the assistant director. The choreography is by Gavin Haas, Jill Hertzog, Lillian Ortiz, and Caitlin Stoltzfoos. Performing as company dancers are Annika Blake, Sarah Blatt, Jada Correll, McKenna Donaldson, Lincoln Everett, Jazmyne Levengood, Emma Myers, Dorene Stauffer, and Hannah Stoltzfoos. The company junior dancers are Emily DeRose, Ava Fidler, Olivia Horst, Aaliyah Lapp, and Inara Taylor. Separate ticket prices have been set for adults and for students. Aaron’s Acres from pg 1 For several years now, Aaron’s Acres has been seeking a home of its own in the northern part of the county. On Paskoff ’s wish list is housing for therapy alpacas, along with sheep, goats, and chickens. A property with space to grow herbs, vegeta-

bles, and flowers would give the organization the opportunity to expand the Aaron’s Acres Plus program, which began offering activities for 22- to 30-year-olds in early 2019. Among the activities planned for adult clients are farming, working with the

animals, and taking part in Aaron’s Acres Acts of Kindness Program (Triple AOK), which allows participants with developmental disabilities to give back to others. Paskoff also hopes Aaron’s Acres can open a café to be manned by participants. “We

are hoping to kick off a capital campaign in 2022,” said Paskoff, who noted the organization is looking for an existing building to renovate to meet its needs. More information about Aaron’s Acres may be found at www.aaronsacres.org.

The event will include a community panel discussion at 6:15 p.m., the film screening at 7 p.m. and an in-person question-and-answer with the film’s producer, Miranda Wilson, after the screenings. “Risking Light” explores resilience and the process of moving from grief to compassion and forgiveness. The panel discussion and open forum will explore the themes the film, including forgiveness, compassion, resilience, and reconciliation. Panelists will include Christopher Fitz, director of strategic initiatives, training, and business development at Advoz, a local agency focused on conflict resolution and restorative justice services; Michael L. Looking for a way to celebrate Valentine’s Day with your sweetheart? Look no further than the Sweethearts Ball. The event will be held on Saturday, Feb. 12, from 5 to 10 p.m. at the Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim. The festivities, which will include dinner, dancing and a silent auction, will benefit We Help Children, a Christian nonprofit created by Drew and Cindy Metcalf. “Drew and Cindy served in Guatemala for 10 years, and the primary focus of their ministry was to work with children in orphanages,” said Gabe Martin, a board member of We Help Children and the organizer of the Sweethearts Ball. “During the pandemic, they were called back home, and they partnered with an organization called The Haft to continue their mission.” We Help Children now operates a restoration farm in Bradford County, where people come for hope and healing. The organization also continues to train people on five continents throughout the world. The Sweethearts Ball will feature dinner catered by Mission BBQ , with a menu

including pulled pork and chicken, sliced brisket, macaroni and cheese, baked beans, green beans, rolls and cornbread. Dinner will be served at 5:30 p.m. After dinner, guests will have the opportunity to hit the dance floor. “We have a wonderful dance instructor, Rebecca Gentry from City Ballroom, and she will teach a few dance moves for those who aren’t particularly skilled at dancing,” Martin said. “It’s a nice way to break the ice and get everyone out on the dance floor.” The evening will also include a silent auction of items such as gift cards and gift baskets, with proceeds benefiting the programs of We Help Children. The organization has held three charity balls in the past, but always at Christmastime, Martin said. “This year, we decided to switch to Valentine’s Day because we’ve found that people would like to attend in December, but the Christmas season is just too busy for a lot of people,” he said. “This gives people the option for something fun to do in February.” Hosting the event around Valentine’s Day adds another layer of appeal, he noted. “If

Wiederseim To Sell Collection Of Ed And Carol Stoudt Of Stoudts’ Black Angus Brewery and Pub Sale To Take Place In Phoenixville On July 24

This is a vintage Wurlitzer juke box. Wiederseim Associates is pleased to offer the private collection of Carol and Ed Stoudt for auction on Saturday, July 24, at 9 a.m. The sale includes the contents of the legendary Stoudt’s Black Angus Restaurant and Brewery in Adamstown, Pa., as well as Ed and Carol’s private collection from their home. After over 30 years in business, Ed and Carol have sold the business and are seeking their next adventure.

The couple opened the Black Angus Antique Mall along with the restaurant and beer garden in the 1980s. Business was good. Why not open a brewery? Based on German beers brewed in the Reinheitsgebot tradition, the couple opened the brewery in 1987, with Carol becoming the first female brewmaster in the U.S. since Prohibition. Through the years, the couple traveled and collected extensively

for their business and home. They assembled items such as Black Forest carved furniture (including two tall case clocks), whimsical circus novelties, Art Nouveau brass chandeliers for the beer hall, carousel horses and an unusual carousel

running rooster, vintage posters, a large collection of German steins, a restored 1932 Auburn Convertible and a 1937 Ford Woody, partially restored, all of which will be in the July 24 sale. “If you’ve ever been to Stoudt’s, you’ll be very familiar with the items in this sale and won’t want to miss it. Their Oktoberfests were the best! Ed in his lederhosen leading the procession, the beer hall with great German food and the German band,” said Ted Wiederseim, auctioneer and owner of Wiederseim Associates Inc. “The Stoudt sale will be our first live sale in over a year, and we’re very excited about getting back to business as usual.” Bidding will be live/in-person as well as live online through Bidsquare, Invaluable and Liveauctioneers. A preview starts Monday, July 19, and runs through Friday, July 23, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The sale will be held at Wiederseim’s facility, located at 1041 W. Bridge St., Phoenixville, Pa. For additional information, call 610-827-1910 or visit www.wiederseim.com.

The massive Art Deco brass chandeliers are from Stoudt’s Bier Hall.

July Is Customer Appreciation Month At The Emporium

The Historic Burlington Antiques and Art Emporium in Burlington City, N.J., will continue its year-long celebration of 20 years in business with Customer Appreciation Month all July. The Emporium will give away three gift certificates at the end of the month. Three lucky customers will have a chance to win a $50, $25, or $15 gift certificate to the multidealer shop. Each time a customer receives an invoice, they will receive a raffle ticket, thus the more a customer buys, the more chances they have of winning. Also, each month during the summer, the front sales display case will highlight dealer’s best or unusual items from their booth or case. The Emporium will be divided into three sections, starting with its dealers located on Route 130 and ending with the dealers on River Continued on page 5

National Village Day Event Posted To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Village Movement, National Village Day will take place on Tuesday, Feb. 15. Villages are intentional caring communities of neighbors helping neighbors. Each village reflects the community it serves and responds to the needs of its members. As part of National Village Day, villages around the country and abroad have planned events and programs to celebrate and highlight their role in creating communities of support for older adults. Lancaster Downtowners, founded in 2008, will recognize the milestone with a free webinar via Zoom on Feb. 15 at 7 p.m. Founder Rod Houser, in conversation with Melissa Ressler, current executive director, and special guests, will explore the history of the Lancaster Downtowners in the context of the Village Movement. Attendance is open to the public. For registration and details, visit https://tinyurl .com/2p92e74w.
