CrossNet Banquet To Feature Ruth Graham By Ann Mead Ash

According to Meredith Dahl, executive director of CrossNet Ministries in New Holland, the annual CrossNet spring banquet is much more than just a fundraiser. “It’s a wonderful opportunity for the community to come together and celebrate what God has done this past year and dream together about what we can do in the future,” said Dahl. This year’s banquet will feature Ruth Graham, daughter of the late evangelist Billy Graham. She will speak at two CrossNet events in March. The organization’s 18th banquet will be held on

Doors will open at 5:15 p.m., and a buffet dinner will begin at 6:15 p.m. There is no cost to attend the banquet, but seating is limited, and reservations are necessary to attend. Organizers recommend that reservations should be made by Monday, March 18. On Wednesday, March 27, Graham will speak at a breakfast at the same venue. Doors will open at 7:30 a.m., and breakfast will be served at 8 a.m. The breakfast will include a questionand-answer period with Graham. Meet-and-greet sponsorship

One of the reasons Mental Health America (MHA) marketing coordinator Charlotte Leckow works so hard gathering items for the live and silent auctions held during the organization’s annual pasta buffet is that the fundraiser helps support the work of Gretchen Gaudioso, client and family advocate with MHA, in area schools. “Gretchen goes into classrooms to talk about mental health issues,” said Leckow. “She talks about what depression is and encourages (students) to be open about these topics and to support each other and to advocate for themselves.” The goal, according to See MHA Fundraiser pg 5

BASIS Group Offers Support For Grieving Parents

HMS Students Prepare To Present “Twain’s Tales”

“No one understands (losing a child) like someone who has been through it,” said Nancy Heckman, who lost her son Rob to stomach cancer more than three years ago. She, along with Dan and Phyllis Steinman, who lost their son, Andy, two years ago in an auto accident, have brought BASIS, a Christian support group for grieving parents, to Paradise. The new BASIS support group, which began meeting in November, is sponsored by Calvary Monument Bible Church, See BASIS pg 6

The writings of Mark Twain are undeniably an American treasure, and Becky Degan, director of the Hinkletown Mennonite School (HMS) spring

play, wants to share that treasure with audiences. “People know (the characters) Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn, but (Twain) wrote so much more,” said Degan. “I would like audiences to take home an appreciation for Mark Twain’s See “Twain’s Tales” pg 3

understand the stories,” said Degan. “Mark Twain wrote a lot about human nature, and a lot of (his writing) is tongue-in-cheek and satire.” Degan noted that as the students read the material multiple times they come to better perceive the humor. “They start to … find the stories entertaining and amusing.” Hamilton and Ropp, who are friends in real life, are enjoying the chance to argue with each other as their onstage characters. As opening night approaches, the students’ thoughts are turning to what the show will bring to audiences. Joke That Made Ed’s Fortune.” The fourth tale, “The Belated Russian Passport,” will give actors the opportunity to interact with the audience. “The young traveler … keeps asking the audience, ‘ What do I do now?’” explained Degan of the story, which takes a young man accidentally into Russia. To connect the five tales together, the action is introduced by five storytellers who have gathered on a general store porch in Hannibal, Miss. Degan has been working with the narrators to help them develop a stage camaraderie. Madison Stauffer, who will play storyteller Tess Brady, noted that some of the ways of speaking used in the play are unusual. “ We have to do a Southern accent,” she explained. “Instead of ‘get,’ we say ‘git.’” Because several students play a number of different roles, Degan has been helping students learn how to transform from one persona to another. “Working with them to understand (how to play) more than one character (has been a process),” said Degan. Degan, who teaches at HMS, said that she has enjoyed journeying with the students as they delve deeper into Twain’s works with the goal of sharing them with audiences. “One of my favorite parts is helping them

“The surprise of the tournament for our team.” Martin fought back from a semifinal round loss to Jordan Espinosa of Mifflin. He had pinned Nicholas Stout of Cedar Crest in 5:37 of the quarterfinal round before facing Espinosa. “He had lost to Stout twice previously this season,” Bunting pointed out. “He trailed 4-1 with about a minute to go before pancaking him to his back for the fall with 23 seconds left.” In the consolation semis, he downed Yodhe Desta of Conestoga Valley followed by Sam Torro or Reading in the third-place match by respective scores of 3-2 and 2-1. The victory over Desta was in quadruple overtime.

Garden Spot’s Jonathan Morales scores two of his 10 points in the Spartans’ 41-39 district playoff victory over host New Oxford last Monday.

Garden Spot’s boys’ basketball team opened District Three play with a 41-39 defeat of New Oxford on the road Monday night, February 18, securing a spot in the Class 5A consolations. In the second round of districts, the Spartans went into the fourth quarter trailing by only one point at Northern York. The home team went on an 18-11 run and topped the Spartans 46-38. The Spartans fell to 16-10 with the loss. The Spartans entered the district playoffs as the 12th seed and upset the fifth-seeded Colonials on Monday. In that game, it was Garden Spot that came on strong in the fourth quarter, outscoring the home team 12-6. Andrew Zentner scored 15 for the Spartans, leading all scorers. Jon Morales tacked on 10 points and Jesse Martin scored five. In the Northern York game, Keontae Nunn’s 25-point performance wasn’t enough for Garden Spot. The Spartans weren’t very successful from threepoint range with Nunn’s single threepointer being the only one for the team. Ryan McGill and Nate McGill each scored 15 for the fourth-seeded Polar Bears, who improved to 22-3. Garden Spot is scheduled to play in the consolation semis. WRESTLING The Spartan wrestlers took to the mats at Governor Mifflin High School on Friday and Saturday, February 15-16, in the District Three Class-AAA Section 1 sectionals. Garrett Gehr, Josh Groff and Dustin Swanson each claimed the gold in their respective weight classes while Charles Martin finished third in the 285-pound weight class and Jeremy Schilling finished fourth at 106. “The top four at each weight class qualified for districts,” head coach Adam Bunting explained. “In total, we had five qualify.” Schilling opened with a first-period pin, topping Conestoga Valley’s Trent Ruble in 1:34. “Jeremy avenged a loss to Ruble from three weeks ago,” Bunting pointed out. “Jeremy came out on fire with an early takedown. He let him up and took him down again.” Though he lost a tough 3-2 deci-

sion in the semis to eventual champion Joey Asterino (Exeter), he won the consolation semis by blanking Muhlenberg’s Edgar Holland before a pin late in the first period forced him to settle for fourth. “Jeremy has held his own as a freshman but went through a rough stretch in late January,” Bunting said. “He is turning it on at the right time now and has seemingly turned a corner.” Swanson, a sophomore, took first at 220. Following a first-round bye, he notched a pin in the quarterfinals, downing Ian Brightbill of Wilson at the 3:36 mark and Max Pachero of Conrad Weiser in the first period of his semifinal match. In the title bout, he edged Cedar Crest’s T.J. Moore by a 3-2 score. Swanson topped Moore in the League Championships. “That was the third time he faced Moore this season,” Bunting explained. “It’s difficult to face the same opponent so many times in a short span and for Dustin to win all three matches against a tough opponent speaks to his consistency. “Dustin has built off his impressive freshman season where he was third in sectionals,” Bunting added. Gehr’s first-place finish in the 120-pound class included two major decisions. He topped Todd Fritz of Cocalio 15-1 and was rock solid against Mason Smith of Reading in the semis, winning 13-1. Gehr won the title match as Chase Stehman of Daniel Boone defaulted due to injury. Gehr, who collected his 30th win of the season, was ahead 6-2 at the time of the injury default. “That’s an impressive feat for a freshman in a very competitive weight class,” Bunting said of Gehr’s 30-6 record. “He is wrestling with a lot of confidence and is poised to make some noise at districts.” Groff’s path to the title match at 126 was a dominant one. He posted a 16-0 technical fall over Reading’s Corey Jenkins and pinned Mifflin’s Davin Simpson 1:08 into the semifinal match. Groff grabbed gold with a 4-0 defeat of Canton Dolla (Daniel Boone), earning his second sectional title in two years. “He put together a workmanlike 4-0 match in the finals,” Bunting said. “Josh is one of the hardest working kids on the team, putting in extra time both in and out of the season. He’s peaking at the right time and has a career high 28 wins with his victory in the finals.” Martin’s third-place finish at 285 was something the head coach called

“Last year, Charles went 3-7 and was in and out of the lineup in an injury-plagued season,” Bunting noted. “He has responded in a big way and has been on a tear lately, finishing fifth in the league tournament and pushing his record over the .500 mark coming into sectionals.” Mason Casey had a fifth-place finish at 113, bouncing back in a big way following a 7-2 loss. Casey flexed his muscles in a consolation match, winning on a fall. He then pinned Braden Manderbach of Conrad Weiser in just 45 seconds. The consolation semis resulted in a major decision for Exeter’s Jevin Guldin, resulting in another bounceback win for Casey- a 13-3 major in the fifth-place match. “He won the fifth-place match for his 20th win of the season and 50th of his young career,” said Bunting. “It was not the result Mason wanted as he qualified for districts when he was a freshman, but moved up to a very competitive weight class this year. He is the type of kid that will learn from this and use it as motivation.” Alan Perez took sixth at 145. He suffered defeats at the hands of David Dariychuk in the first match of the tournament as well as the fifth-place match. In between, Perez posted a 6-3 win over Chris Byler, of Cedar Crest and a 7-3 win over Michael Elphick of Daniel Boone. He came up short against Connor Lender of Exeter in a close 3-2 final for the consolation semis, falling to 20-17 on the season.

Leckow, is to remove the stigma associated with mental health issues and help the students feel more comfortable discussing them. On Friday, March 8, MHA will hold the fundraiser, now in its third decade, at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 64 Hershey Ave., Lancaster. Dinner will begin at 5:30 p.m., and the live and silent auctions will begin at 6:45 p.m. Silent auction winners will be announced throughout the evening. In addition to her duties with MHA, Gaudioso does much of the cooking for the pasta buffet. “We will have two kinds of pastas and offer meat and regular sauce,” said Gaudioso, who added that salad, as well as meat, sausage, and plain lasagnas will also be on the menu, along with bread donated by a local bakery. According to Kristin Labezius, assistant program director and intensive case manager with Community Services Group of MHA, volunteers of all ages will gather at the church on the evening of March 7 when the cooking begins. Gaudioso noted that 10 large chafing dishes of lasagna are prepared to feed about 300 guests, and Leckow added that nearly 40 volunteers

coming from all professions will join in the effort. The evening’s silent auction will include at least 100 items, including sports memorabilia, pottery, admissions to Rock Ford Plantation, tours and tastings, tickets to a summer concert series held in a vineyard, donations by local artists and craftspeople, and gift certificates for area eateries. “We have cleaning services, dental whitening treatments, (and) Hershey camping tickets, and we have participants who donate artwork as well,” said Leckow. Up to 40 donations will be included in the live auction. Weekend getaways; a hot air balloon ride; a limo ride anywhere in Lancaster County for a prom or wedding; lunches with local celebrities, such as a legislator; and jewelry will all be auctioned by Tim Keller. Themed baskets that will go up for bids may include a chocolate-lovers basket, a cookie making basket, a bird feeder basket, a bath and body basket, and a treasure chest basket. MHA of Lancaster provides a variety of services, including support groups, community support programs, advocacy services, and peer education.

Compeer Lancaster, a program of MHA, matches adults in the community in recovery from mental illness with a volunteer friend. The Lancaster County Suicide Prevention Coalition, also an MHA program, brings together community partners with individuals dedicated to reducing suicide rates. Other offerings include mental health screenings, a wellness program, and education services. Kim McDevitt, executive director of MHA Lancaster, said that she is looking forward to the

buffet because it brings a fun element to the work of the organization. “I love that this is a casual, fun event where all come together to support mental health and wellness in the community,” she stated. The organization hopes to raise $30,000 during the evening. Tickets to the event are discounted for children ages 6 to 10, and children age 5 and under will be admitted for free. Tickets may be purchased at www.mha lancaster.org or at the door on the evening of the event.

meetings revolve around a discussion topics, such as the holidays or winter, but the agenda is flexible. “If someone is having an issue or a concern is brought up, the conversation will revolve around that,” she explained. “(The meetings are) very welcoming,” added Nancy, who noted that when new members arrive and need to talk about their personal experiences, the leaders can switch gears. Phyllis stated that there is no set curriculum. “If you miss a month, you missed out on the conversation and the sharing, but you don’t have to worry about reading a chapter (in a book),” she said. Phyllis noted that she and Dan are grateful to Nancy for introducing them to BASIS. “After our son, Andy, died, we reached out to pastor Jim Davis at (Calvary Monument to) ask if any other parents had lost children,” she explained. Davis shared the names of Nancy and her husband, Lee, who has since passed away. In early 2017, Nancy asked Phyllis to attend BASIS meetings that are held at a church in Akron. The two began making the monthly trip to Akron, and they found the sessions helpful. However, neither relished the nighttime drive to Akron. “There are so many people in (this area) who have lost children, we thought it would be beneficial to have a group down this way,” said Phyllis. Because fathers and mothers may grieve differently, BASIS has styled the support group atmosphere to be comfortable for all involved. Speaking is not required, but those who wish to are encouraged to share feelings. “Women are (typically) more into support groups,” noted Nancy. “Men (generally) don’t want to talk about their feelings.” When Phyllis began attending BASIS with Nancy, Dan became interested. Phyllis recalled that when she came home, he would ask questions about the meetings. “I told him it was hard to explain, and he just needed to come (along),” Phyllis said. When Dan attended, he met a few other fathers who were attending, and he is hoping to see men join the Paradise group. In addition to training, BASIS provides free leadership support through BASIS director Don Allison, as well as a newsletter, meeting topics, and lists of resources. In addition, BASIS holds two yearly countywide gatherings, including a spring breakfast and a summer picnic. BASIS honors the deceased children of members by printing their names with birth and death dates quarterly in the newsletter. Nancy also described a portable Wall of Remembrance, which includes the children’s names, photos, and other information. The wall is displayed during the picnic and the breakfast. Readers who would like more information about BASIS may visit www.hvmi.org. Individuals who are interested in joining the Paradise BASIS support group may call Calvary Monument Bible Church at 717-442-8161.

Veritas Academy will sponsor a lecture oriented toward parents of children in kindergarten through 12th grade on Thursday, March 7, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Wheatland Presbyterian Church, 1125 Columbia Ave., Lancaster. Dr. Andrew Mitchell will present the lecture, titled “Hungry Souls in a Self-Affirming Culture: Rediscovering the Beauty of Food and Feasting.” Parents, teachers, and community members are invited to attend. Mitchell will address a hunger that needs to be satisfied, different than stomachs seeking to be filled or personalities seeking affirmation. He will encourage those in attendance to reclaim mealtimes as more than the intersection of food and beverages, but rather as the convergence of history, poetry, and theology. Mitchell earned his bachelor’s degree from Hillsdale College and his master’s and doctorate degrees from The Ohio State University. He is an associate professor of history at Grove City College. There is no fee for the lecture, but reservations are required, as space is limited. To register, readers may visit www.veritas academy.com/feasting-event or call 717-205-3617. The event is co-sponsored by Veritas Academy and The Center for Vision and Values at Grove City College. Veritas Academy offers a classical Christian education to students in preschool through 12th grade, instructing students in the three stages of grammar, logic, and rhetoric. Currently, the ministry offers a youth center, food and nutrition center, Power Packs affiliation, and free summer lunch program, in addition to a number of community programs. The banquet, which attracts about 1,200 area residents, will feature a buffet including a chicken dish, a beef dish, and a number of sides. A salad bar and dessert bar will also be included. The breakfast, which can accommodate 800 attendees, will also be served buffet style. Readers who would like to learn more about CrossNet may visit www.elancocross.org.

In addition to Graham’s talk, the evening will include an update from Dahl on the ministry with assistance from Carl Edwards, director of development and ministries. “We have some exciting videos to share,” said Dahl. “One is a story of life change and the other is a

Graham is known for her passion to tell people about God’s comfort and loving acceptance. She speaks of ways to move from a place of hurt to wholeness in Christ. Graham will speak from a biblical perspective on the banquet theme of “Hope in the Darkness,” while sharing her own faith journey and how it has been impacted by life’s unexpected challenges. Dahl noted that organizers of the banquet were first drawn to consider Graham when they heard her speaking at her father’s funeral, which they watched online. “We were really encouraged by her story and her authenticity,” recalled Dahl, who added that she feels Graham has an important message to share. “She highlighted the fact that Billy Graham was a highly respected and loved

The Feinberg Brothers will perform a concert of bluegrass music in the banquet hall at the Reinholds Fire Company, 138 W. Main St., Reinholds, on Saturday, March 2. The doors will open at 5 p.m., and the music will begin at 6 p.m. Also performing will be Chester Johnson and The Foggy Mountain Grass and Scott Eager. The Feinberg Brothers is a bluegrass group from Long Island, N.Y. Brothers Rourke and Patrick grew up with the sounds of bluegrass throughout their home, and some of the area’s best musicians visited their family to play music. By the ages of 7 and 9, the brothers were invited to do guest appearances with Terry McGill and Straight Drive and also Danny Paisley and the Southern Grass. By blending their bluegrass roots with a classical training background, they present harmonies and guitar, fiddle and mandolin playing. The Feinberg Brothers group also includes Peter Elegant, Terry McGill and Ron Feinberg. Elegant has consistently been part of the bluegrass scene, playing the banjo, fiddle, rhythm guitar and bass, as well as singing. McGill has been playing the five-string banjo since the age of 13. He has performed from coast to coast with many different bands. He has also written a book of banjo tunes played in alternate tunings. Ron contributes guitar playing and vocals. He has been performing bluegrass music for almost 30 years and has performed with a host of artists, including Bill Monroe, The Lewis Family and Mac Wiseman. There are requested donation amounts per person, with discounts for teenagers ages 13 to 17. Children age 12 and under will be admitted for free. Food will be available from the fire company. For more information, readers may call 610-573-0797.

HMS’ gym was built 34 years ago, and the floor tiles are ready for replacement rather than just repair. HMS plans to install an up-to-date, sports-grade floor that can handle the more than 50,000 feet that cross the gym floor each year. In order to schedule the floor replacement for this summer, HMS parents, board of trustees members, faculty members, and staff members must raise $105,000 by Tuesday, March 5. In addition to interscholastic sports, the gymnasium is used for back-to-school nights, chapel services, music and drama programs, graduation, alumni gatherings, and the annual HMS

Additionally, the idea had grown to include more sweet treats than just cupcakes. Every Friday in February, the fourth-grade entrepreneurs have offered a variety of cupcakes, macaroons, crisped rice treats, cookies and more at their bake stand. According to fourth-grade teacher Anette Raiser, the students made posters, handled and counted money, and conducted setup and cleanup. Inspired by

Hinkletown Mennonite School (HMS) has announced its Score the Floor 2019 campaign, which is raising funds for the replacement of the school’s gymnasium floor. Among those assisting with the campaign are HMS fourthgraders Tahlia Kuhn, Katie Zimmerman, and Giana Garman. The three students like to read, bake, and run, and when they heard about the fundraising campaign, they wanted to help. Taking their inspiration from their favorite book series, “Cupcake Club,” the three students started a club to

the commitment of the fourthgraders, an anonymous donor pledged to match the funds raised through the bake sale. Along with the students, community members are helping to raise funds. HMS parents Mary and Nevin Bowman are making and selling egg rolls to contribute toward the challenge goal, and other families are preparing their families’ specialties to add their efforts. A GoFundMe page has been set up to connect with alumni who have fond memories of many activities in the gym. HMS parents Ryan and Jennifer Zimmerman organized a benefit cornhole tournament, which was scheduled to take place on Feb. 23.

Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) will hold a quilt preview from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 28, and Friday, March 1, as well as from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 2, at MCC East Coast’s Material Resources Center, 517 W. Trout Run Road, Ephrata. Admission is free. The preview will offer an opportunity to view the quilts slated for auction at the 63rd annual Pennsylvania Relief Sale. Thousands of hours have gone into creating the more than 100 quilts. Unique to the preview this year will be quilts and wall hangings made from submissions to the Charity Block Design Challenge through The Old Country Store in Intercourse and Jaftex Corporation, a fabric manufacturer in New York City. The Old Country Store won a Jaftex Facebook contest through the company’s CEO, Scott Fortunoff, and chose MCC and the Pennsylvania Relief Sale as the charity recipient. The store decided to hold an event, with Fortunoff as the main speaker, and paired it with the Charity Block Design Challenge, where registered participants received a mystery pair of fat-quarter fabrics beforehand from one of five featured designers from the corporation: Kaffe Fassett, Kim Diehl, Tula Pink, Tim Holtz, and William Morris. The corporation donated the fabrics. Participants were then asked to use the two fabrics they received to create a 10.5-by-10.5-inch quilt block in any pattern. At an event on Nov. 29, 2018, at Shady Maple in East Earl, attendees voted on their favorites in five categories - best use of color, best pieced, best applique, best nontraditional, and people’s choice with winners receiving prizes. Winning blocks were sewn into individual wall hangings while many of the other submissions were made into sampler quilts. More than 150 blocks were submitted for the
