Lions plan egg-cellent adventure
BY ANN MEAD ASHNewHolland Lions Club member Dustin Spencer easily recalls taking part in an egg hunt in the New Holland park in the early 1990s when he was just a child. “I remember the ambulance sounding the alarm and the kids going (to hunt the eggs),” said Spencer, who is now one of the organizers of the annual Lion Club’s egg hunt.
This year’s egg hunt will take place in the New Holland Community Memorial Park in the 400 block of Jackson Street, New Holland, on Saturday, April 8, beginning at 10 a.m. The hunt, which will take place rain or shine, will be held on the south side of Jackson Street in front of the swimming pool.
According to Spencer, participation in the event is for children age 11 and under. Members of the Lions will arrive at 8 a.m. to put the eggs out, and they will also divide the field into several sections for different ages. “It’s all roped off, and there’s signage for age groups,” explained organizer Mitch Dissinger.
Preparation for the hunt begins several weeks before, when Spencer purchases enough candy to fill 4,000 plastic eggs. “The New Holland Boy Scouts of Troop 48 help us stuff Easter eggs,” said Spencer, who added that this year the stuffing will take place at the Boy Scout building on Roberts Avenue a few weeks prior to the event.
A few of the eggs will be stuffed with coins instead of candy. “One person does that,” said Lions Club secretary James Bronson, who noted that those eggs are spread out carefully amongst the others.
“That way all the money isn’t in the same spot,” he explained.
In Spencer’s recollection, the New Holland Ambulance siren blew to kick off the hunt, but for the last several years, a member of the New Holland Police Department has done the honors. “The police come and sound the siren, and the kids go and visit the (officer) at the car when the hunt is done,” he said. “It’s pretty cool.”
Children who participate drop their empty eggs back off before leaving the park. Last year, about 100
children took part, and the Lions hope to see even more this year.
As in the past, the Eastern Lancaster County Library will have a display at the event. “Ms. Sylvia from the library will add to the festivities at the Lions egg hunt by providing free books for children and other library goodies,” said library director Anna D’Agostino.
The New Holland Lions Club meets at 6 p.m. at Yoder’s Restaurant the second Tuesday of each month. The 18member group will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2025. Individuals who are interested in joining may contact Bronson at lionjbron@yahoo.com.For more information, readers may search for “New Holland Lions Club” on Facebook.

Swap meet to aid Steps to Success Taking
BY CATHY MOLITORISMargaret Thatcher once said, “If you want something done, ask a woman.” There’s a whole lot getting done in Lancaster County, because for the first time ever, all of the Chambers of Commerce in the county are led by women. Each woman brings a wealth of experience and a unique perspective to her role, but all of the leaders share a common goal: They want to make their community a great place to live and work.
Denise Grove, who started her role as executive director of the Elizabethtown Area Chamber of Commerce in
magic tricks when he first began performing, Papa Tater thought that maybe a swap meet would be a great way to make some of his extra inventory disappear and help support Steps to Success, a nonprofit Christian preschool and day care service directed by his wife, Michelle Harbaugh.
See Steps to Success pg 3
February of 2022, said the job offers her a way to really connect with others. “As a lifetime resident of Elizabethtown, I had a strong desire to work where I could make a difference and be a part of strengthening our community,” she remarked, a sentiment shared by Heather Valudes, who has been president and CEO of the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce since June of 2022. “I love Lancaster and the work that we are able to advance to make our employer community as strong as possible,” she said, noting that the Lancaster Chamber is countywide and represents nearly 1,500 businesses, almost half of the county’s workforce.
See At the table pg 2
For Ashley Zell, who became executive director of the Mount Joy Chamber of Commerce in January, the job brings a chance to get to know her community. “The friends and connections made and the interaction with the Chamber members and community at our numerous different events are definitely the biggest rewards of this position,” Zell said.
The women also remarked that holding the job offers a chance to see their communities thrive. “It’s seeing kids dancing at the farmers market,” commented Rebecca Branle, who has been executive director of Venture Lititz since August of 2021. “It’s celebrating big wins with merchants. It’s watching this town become ever more alive with art, culture and community pride.” Her perspective matches that of Kristie Schmid, who has been executive director of the Manheim Area Chamber of Commerce since March of 2021. “I love seeing our community respond to the revitalization in town, the increase in businesses and the new community events,”
Schmid said. “It’s fulfilling to put your time into something and then see others have pride in it as well.”
For some of the Chamber leaders, the role is a full-time job. For others, it’s something they do in addition to other employment. As a financial adviser for Edward Jones, Jona Green serves as head of the Southern Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce on a volunteer basis, but she’s just as committed to that role as she is her paid job. “The biggest reward is absolutely the connection to our schools and community,” said Green, who has been leading her Chamber since March of 2022. “Our reach is large, but our heart is rooted in service and making more things possible for our members.”
Although each of the Chambers faces its own challenges, the directors all project positivity when it comes to their communities. “Right now, we see the biggest challenge for a number of our members to be finding enough employees,” said Kerry Meyers, who stepped down as executive director of the Mount Joy Chamber of
Commerce after more than 11 years and is now executive assistant to Zell. “And for our small shops in Mount Joy, it is getting customers in their doors. We need the community to support small local businesses.”
Liz Ackerman, who has been executive director of the Northern Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce since January of 2019, said her organization faces a challenge of keeping pace with

expansion. “We are growing at an exponential rate,” she explained, noting that she values maintaining a close connection with all of the Chamber’s 430-plus members. “We pride ourselves on knowing every member’s name and understanding their needs.”
For some of the directors, being a female leader in the world of business has been a challenge they’ve faced with grace. “I have learned to embrace my leadership style and not shy away from opportunities to lead,” said Grove, noting that she attributes her success to surrounding herself with strong female role models. “Confidence in yourself is key. We all belong at the table, so be brave enough to pull up a chair. If you are afraid, do it anyway.”
That’s a feeling Branle said she understands. “My worst enemy has always been the negative voice in my head, telling me to question my worthiness,” she stated. “If you, too, have a voice like that, learn to tell her to be quiet.”
As committed as they are to their Chambers, all of the women have managed to find a work-life balance. Meyers has been married for 45 years and loves spending time with her two children and five grandchildren. Zell is raising a family of three with her husband, and they enjoy hiking and attending Faith Bible Fellowship Church. Valudes is the married mother of twin daughters, serves as secretary for the Paradise Township Lions Club and helps with Girl Scouts. Grove and her husband enjoy spending time with their seven children and eight grandchildren, and Grove is active with the Rotary Club of Elizabethtown, where she will serve as president beginning in 2025. Ackerman and her husband are raising two children, and she describes herself as a “serial volunteer” with numerous organizations. Branle and her husband have three children, and the family loves to bike, travel and play “very competitive family football games.” Green and her husband are raising two children who are active in their high school’s marching band, and she joked that her favorite hobby is “networking.” Schmid has been married for 22 years, has three girls and loves to read, shop and explore local breweries.

The event was so successful over the years that what Papa Tater believes to be the seventh Entertainers’ Swap Meet will be held at Zion Lutheran Church, 18 Quarry Road, Leola, on Saturday, March 25, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. More than 40 tables are booked, plus a special swap table where attendees may swap an item of equal value for another or make a donation to Steps in exchange for an item. The event,
which is free to visit and open to the public, also includes a magic miniconvention.
While the swap meet is focused on entertainment equipment and props, Papa Tater noted that the door is left open for tricks. “It’s a room full of entertainers, mostly magicians, and that can be fun,” he said. “You get to walk around and talk to magicians.”
“And they like to show off,”

Ladies Fellowship will host its Spring Fling on Thursday, March 30, at 6:15 p.m. at Christian Fellowship Church, 758 Spruce Road, New Holland. The guest speaker will be Mar-

added Michelle.
Papa Tater noted that while the mini-convention is mostly magic oriented, juggling and puppet supplies are often available. “We really never know what will show up, which is part of what I love about this,” he said. “We get a roomful of magicians and some are biggername magicians, so the things that show up are incredible … things I never thought I would see in person or something I never knew existed.” Among the items that have been offered for purchase was a bed of nails that Papa Tater had a chance to lie on, a large ball that an entertainer walks on that was used by a circus performer, and full-size guillotines. “We have everything from beginner magic to stage illusions on sale,” said Papa Tater, who displayed an Axtell polar bear puppet called Snowball as part of his own
inventory. “Axtell is one of those companies that make ventriloquists sit up (and take notice). This is a professional puppet that sold for maybe $500 new.” Performancerelated items that are encouraged include items related to flow arts, acrobatics, face painting, balloon twisting, and DJ equipment.
Steps to Success will provide food by donation. Traditionally, hot dogs and sauerkraut and baked goods have been on the menu.
According to Papa Tater, the goal has not changed since he first envisioned the event. “The objective is to hold a successful fundraiser for Steps and to help the magic community to redistribute tricks and supplies,” he said.

As for advice for other female leaders, each woman referenced striking a balance between being assertive and being kind. “Work with integrity,” Zell stated. “Be willing to humble yourself. Be respectful of others in the workplace and the community.”
Ackerman advised that women should also be kind to themselves. “Own your talents and always accept a compliment,” she remarked. “This is one of the hardest things to learn, but recognizing your strengths, especially when someone points them out to you, provides a confidence that will reach far beyond anything you can read in a book.”
And don’t underestimate what you can achieve, Schmid said, adding, “Never limit yourself. Find your passion and put your all into developing it so you can bring your best to the table.”

Easter egg-stravaganza planned
BY ANN MEAD ASHPequea Evangelical Congregational (E.C.) Church, 5482 Old Philadelphia Pike, Gap, began holding an Easter egg hunt a few years ago. Pastor Jesse Bills noted that the event has grown steadily, attracting about 150 people last year.

3 years of age to sixth grade, will be held on Friday, March 31, beginning at 6:30 p.m. “We have held them on the Friday of Palm Sunday weekend,” said Bills, who noted that participants will register at a table inside the church when they arrive. The event will begin with a video presenting the Gospel message of Easter. Following the video, participants will

She noted that when the officiant gave the eulogy he began to cry. “He said ‘I wish I could have done more,’” recalled McDevitt. for MHALC. “It will be a follow-up educational session for the people who can assist the (faith leaders) as needs arise to lessen the burden.”
“We will provide training to the champions so they can walk alongside (the faith leaders), who are often tasked with doing that alone without a support system,” said Bitikofer.
McDevitt explained that the champions will then become contact persons between faith communities and MHALC. According to Lamberson, MHALC can then help the champions navigate the complex mental health system, which they are able to provide without charge thanks to the community, foundations, and others who support the work.
