Tremblay Exhibit To Include International Flair By Ann Mead Ash
New Holland Area Historical Society (NHAHS) board member Wilbur Horning recently expressed how honored the society feels to have been blessed with more than 60 original works and pencil sketches by the late Myrtle Tremblay. “We consider it a compliment,” said Wilbur recently. NHAHS will display “The Unseen Works of Myrtle Tremblay” at its museum, 207 E. Main St., New Holland, throughout the summer. A formal opening will be held on Sunday, May 19, at 2 p.m. Tremblay was known
for her paintings of Lancaster County scenery, but many of the works that will be featured in the exhibit were completed in Guatemala, Mexico, Colombia, and elsewhere in South America prior to Tremblay’s move to New Holland. The technique used in these paintings is considered different from her later works. Tremblay was born Myrtle Cobb in Albion, Mich., in 1908. In her youth, she taught herself to draw by copying pictures. She attended Bay City Junior College, where her talent was recognized and she became art editor of the school yearbook. Tremblay earned a See Tremblay Exhibit pg 3

For more details, call the church office at 717-354-5573.

Tremblay Exhibit from pg 1 Bachelor of Science from Central Michigan University before attending the Art Institute of Chicago, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and the Art Center in New York. Beginning in 1937, she traveled to South America, Europe, and Asia, along with the northwest United States, painting scenes from her journey. It was during this period that the works that will be on display at NHAHS were created. In the 1940s, Tremblay sketched servicemen and servicewomen for the United Services Organization in Detroit and the American Theater Wing in New York City. Tremblay and her husband moved to New Holland in 1952 when her husband went to work for New Holland Machine as a photographer. Tremblay remained in New Holland until
she died at the age of 102. Her works, for which she had received many awards, were displayed and sold throughout the county, often to help raise funds for local organizations. NHAHS board member Don Horning noted that the museum received the donation of the artwork in July of 2017. Don asked members of the Lancaster art community to help evaluate the pieces. A decision was made to tell Tremblay’s story, including a written narrative, along with examples of her art. In October 2018, Win Reber, a retired art teacher known for holding lectures on various artrelated topics for community groups, began helping to sort and catalog the art. “Win caught the vision, and we met, and he started working,” said Don, adding, “The goal is to preserve

(Tremblay’s) memory.” Reber held a lecture on Tremblay in March and an abbreviated show of Tremblay’s international paintings was on display at Garden Spot Village in April. NHAHS is also grateful to Joyce Heberlein and Julia and Terry Swartz for their help in preserving Tremblay’s story. At least 10 of Tremblay’s works will be offered for sale during the exhibit. Funds raised by the sale of these paintings will help cover the costs of processing and preparing of the pieces. The community is invited to visit the exhibit at the NHAHS museum, located on the second floor of the Kauffman Building. The museum, which is handicapped-accessible, is currently open on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Readers who would like more information may visit www.nhhistorical.com.

Complete Chiropractic care, adjust the full spine, seen the same day. Your time is valuable to us. Thirty-seven years experience.
A Working Truck Beauty Contest is being held online, and the winners of each of the four categories will be featured at the Convoy. To vote, readers may visit https://1.shortstack.com/ nJPNlD. The Convoy Carnival, open to children and adults of all ages, will feature a wide array of local food, games, dozens of costumed characters, live music and a live auction. An on-stage presentation will take place at noon. Parking will be located in the residential area across from Burle Business Park, and a free bus service will shuttle guests from Lancaster Catholic High School and Grandview Shopping Plaza throughout the day. The Make-A-Wish Mother’s Day Truck Convoy began in 1990 when a child, Matt, was granted his wish to ride in an 18-wheeler and talk to his sister via CB radio. On the day of Matt’s Wish, more than 40 trucks were in the Convoy. Since then, the event has grown each year. In 2003, 2004, and 2016, the Convoy set the Guinness World Record for the world’s longest truck convoy.
For more information or to register as a driver, readers may visit www.wishconvoy.org. Preregistration is appreciated, but drivers may also register at the event. There is a minimum donation for truck drivers to participate in the convoy. Information is also available by emailing convoy@ philadesv.wish.org or calling

chasing new equipment. “We redid our entire playground to have separate areas for children,” said Morales, who explained that the areas are divided by age with individual sections for infants, toddlers, prekindergarten-age children, and school-age students. One area where NHELC shone was in the center’s openness to children with special needs. “(Keystone Stars was) impressed by our program for children with varying needs,” said Bortzel. Dawn Ranck Hower, pastor of New Holland Mennonite Church, which oversees the NHELC ministry, gave special credit to Bortzel and Morales. “This would not have happened without the
hard work of Wanda and Jennifer,” she said. “They (persevered) with all the details.” She also noted that she was grateful for how employees and volunteers pulled together to help gain the new rating. “The staff was willing to be trained and make adjustments,” she said. “It was really a team effort.” NHELC staff hopes to achieve a STARS 4 rating, which is the highest number awarded by Keystone Stars, in the future. Bortzel noted that adding running water in some of the classrooms is on the list of future changes. Individual cubbies will also be installed in the hallways to help prevent the spread of germs. This project is being completed
with the help of members of the Garden Spot Village woodworkers group. Funding for the project is being provided by the Community Church at Garden Spot Village. Before the new cubbies are installed, however, walls and flooring in that area will need to be replaced. NHELC serves children from six weeks old through kindergarten age. A full-day kindergarten is available. Children through sixth grade may attend a before- and after-school program. Readers who would like more information about NHELC may visit www.creatingcommunity forkids.com, call 717-354-4440, or search for “New Holland Early Learning Center” on Facebook.

NHELC from pg 1 center was required to make a number of changes to qualify for STARS 3. Policies, training for the staff, and paperwork were all completed with the help of a coach from the Keystone Stars program. Room assessment was an important part of the effort. “We had to look at what was in the classroom and how it was used and how the teachers interacted with the students,” said Morales, who noted that science and math equipment, furniture, ethnically diverse dolls, and wall art that depicted a variety of cultures, ages, and families were all purchased. Spartans Hold Off Ephrata in Volleyball by Ara Grigorian
In a Section Two battle between Garden Spot and Ephrata, it was the Spartans who came out on top Tuesday evening on their home court, edging Ephrata 3-2 in boys’ volleyball action. The match saw momentum swings and three close sets, winding down to the tiebreaker fifth set, which the Spartans claimed by a 15-9 score. It raised their record to 2-6 in the LancasterLebanon League (4-7 overall) while the Mountaineers fell to 3-5 (4-5 overall). Garden Spot forged ahead with 25-18 and 25-19 victories only to see the visitors eke out a 25-21 win in the third set. The Mountaineers kept it up in the fourth set, winning 25-15 before Garden Spot bounced back with a 15-9 triumph. Dwight Weaver led the Spartans in kills with 11. Weaver, Travis Myers and Garrett Fisher each notched one service ace. Jordan Martin put up 19 assists and
Aaron Lapp had a match-leading total of 10 digs. John Sauder registered five blocks. Though Ethan Sensenig had a match-high 13 kills and Jose Laguer-Seda led everyone in assists with 33 - both from the Ephrata side, the Spartans’ team effort helped them with the timely points. It wasn’t the first time these two squads had fought in such a close match. In an early-season meeting at Ephrata, the Mounts and Spartans had another back-and-forth battle with nearly identical scores in the first three sets. The Spartans trailed 2-1 but won the fourth set 26-24 only to lose the tiebreaker in the March 28 road match. BASEBALL Lancaster Catholic came back from two runs down to top Garden Spot 4-3 at New Holland on April 22 in a Section Three and Four crossover baseball game. The Crusaders scored three in the top of the sixth and, following the tying run by Garden Spot, tacked on the eventual game-winning run in the seventh inning. That run came on a
Cam Barto solo homer for the Crusaders, who managed to pull off the win with only four base hits and three walks. “Almost every game this year has been nip-and-tuck,” head coach Greg Reiff stated. “We’ve been in a lot of close ballgames. “The toughest thing about that game was that a couple of close calls didn’t go our way,” continued the coach. “You just have to play the game as it is. We had plenty of opportunities to score more runs but we didn’t.” Aiden Bracken pitched into the seventh inning, recording two outs in the final frame before being relieved by fellow senior Dylan Crossan. Bracken struck out 10, walked three and was charged with only three earned runs in 6.2 innings. Garden Spot’s offense managed only three hits, including a double by Ben Spencer. Spencer also drew a walk and scored two runs. Crossan and Ivan Ruble both singled. Justin Petersheim’s sacrifice fly drove in a run. The following afternoon, Cocalico held the Spartans to one run in a 5-1 Section Three win for the Eagles. Garden Spot fell to 7-7 (7-6 league). Nolan Fletcher, who roped a double, and Joe Royle each had two hits. Ruble singled and scored the lone Spartan run on a Wyatt Weaver RBI.
Spencer had the only other hit for Garden Spot. Spencer started and went five innings. The three errors committed behind him were costly as all five Eagles runs were unearned. Ray Haddon came on to pitch two scoreless innings in relief to close out the game in New Holland. “Both of our starting pitchers did a nice job,” Reiff remarked, referring to Bracken’s start against LC and Spencer’s effort against Cocalico. “We have six very solid pitchers three seniors, two sophomores and a junior,” Reiff said. “Unfortunately, we’ve lost our top two catchers for the year.” Stringing together big innings and consistent offensive production has been an issue, Reiff explained. “We can’t get a game where we have five guys in a row getting hits,” he said. “We have to play small ball and maximize opportunities. As I said, all of our games have been very close.” Ruble, Crossan and Spencer have been among the consistent hitters on the team. “Ivan Ruble has been on an absolute tear,” said the coach. “He has been picking it up with the weather getting warmer. “Dylan and Ben have done
everything we’ve asked them to do,” continued the coach. “They’ve been hitting the ball well all year.” GIRLS LACROSSE The girls’ lacrosse team earned its fourth win of the year with a solid 14-6 victory at Spring Grove on Monday. Sophomore goalie Lexi Horning grabbed five saves as the Spartans out-shot the Rockets 23-11.
The visiting Spartans took a 6-4 lead into the second half of this nonleague match. They outscored the Rockets 8-2 in the second half and improved their season record to 4-9. Kiersten Ellsworth and Olivia Usner led the team in scoring with six and five goals, respectively. They each recorded an assist as well. Freshman Emma Gruber scored one

PENNYSAVER goal. Lilly Leaman and Kayla Steiner each recorded a goal and an assist while Megan Esh dished out two assists. Sophie Torrance and Mataya Hostetter also chipped in with assists. Garden Spot topped that 14-goal output two days later with 15 goals at Elizabethtown. However, the Bears held on for a 23-15 L-L League win, dropping the Spartans’ league mark to 2-7. The Spartans’ attack was relentless, nearly equaling the Bears’ total of shots - falling one shy of the home team’s total of 26. Ellsworth was virtually unstoppable with seven goals plus an assist. Usner (1a) and Leaman (1) each notched hat tricks while Hostetter and Steiner each gave out an assist. Megan Esh netted one goal. SOFTBALL For the second time this season, the Spartans’ softball team scored 10 runs in a game against Cocalico. On Wednesday, the Spartans blanked the Eagles on the road with Elizabeth King pitching a one-hit shutout. The 10-0 victory ended after six innings due to the mercy rule. King, who struck out eight, allowed only three walks as the Spartans improved to 8-4 in the league (9-4 overall). “She had a good game, allowing only one hit,” head coach Kim King commented. In their previous meeting, the
Spartans won 10-1. In that game, King recorded 17 strikeouts. “They’re an improved team,” the Spartans coach remarked “They were making contact and did better than they did the first time we played them. I shared that with their coach.” On a day with all infield positions represented by sophomores - Gabi Spencer at third, Amelia Mercado at short, Ali King at second and Abi O’Neill at first - King remarked, “We probably played the best defense we’ve played all year.” O’Neill in her first start, had a hit. Megan Fisher and Mercado had two hits each as did Elizabeth King, who had three RBIs. Fisher and Mercado each drove in two. Ashley Risser, Zoey Parker and Spencer each drove in one run. The Spartans lost 4-1 to Lancaster Catholic on the road Monday. The Crusaders scored four in the bottom of the fourth and kept the Spartans scoreless until the top of the sixth. King struck out eight in a losing cause and had two of the team’s three hits, driving in the one Spartan run. In the stretch run of the regular season, the Spartans find themselves at number 16 in the District Three Class 5A power rankings with their 9-4 mark. “We have to win out - take every game,” King said. “I told the girls we were 16th and we have to fight hard for this district spot. We have

to play each and every game as if it’s our last game. “We have been playing good defense and that’s great to see,” she added. TENNIS The Spartans came up short in their regular season finale on Tuesday. Lampeter-Strasburg’s 5-2 win at New Holland ended Garden Spot’s season with a 0-5 mark in the league (2-11 overall). The pairing of Sam Tlumach and Matt McCormick worked nicely for the Spartans at number one doubles. They were tenacious in their 9-7 defeat of Alexandros Vaziri and Alex Baker. Adam Hershey and Andrew Bowman made their counter parts work hard in an 8-6 final that went to L-S duo Braden Weaver and Logan Emmert. The Pioneers also won the third singles as Connor Murry and Will Culbert were on the short end of an 8-4 final. Hershey gained a team point at number four singles, taking it in straight sets 6-4, 6-4. McCormack narrowly missed going over the top in the first set of number three singles in a 7-5 setback. TRACK The boys’ track and field team suffered a 116-30 loss at Ephrata in a Section Two meet. Sophomore Austin Werley won two field events for Garden Spot with a 105-foot discus throw and a shot put of 36-9.5. Garden Spot fell to 0-5 while
Ephrata improved to 5-0 on the year. The same record applied to the girls’ squads of both schools as the Mountaineers topped the Spartans 127-23. Faith Coblentz won the 300-meter hurdles in 49.9 seconds for Garden Spot. BOYS’ LACROSSE In a pair of non-league games, the boys’ lacrosse team lost to Red Lion on Monday but rebounded with a dominant 16-3 win at Cedar Cliff on Tuesday. The win on Tuesday improved Garden Spot’s mark to 2-10. Knotted at 2-2 after the first quarter, the Spartans scored 14 unanswered goals over the next two periods. They out-shot the Colts 37-21. Titus Marburger was solid in front of the Spartans net, making 14 saves. Leading the offense was Benton Moyer with five goals and one assist. Jesse Mast scored four times. Also scoring multiple goals were Gavyn Naranjo and Max Mercado with two each. Ian Blankley scored one but assisted three times. Liam Hamer and senior Zeb Fisher each scored one goal and recorded an assist. Moyer had a hat trick in the 21-5 Photo by Vinny Tennis loss to Red Lion. Fisher and Naranjo Garden Spot’s John Sauder (11) and Jordan Martin team up to each tallied one goal while Zane Fisher block an Ephrata shot during the Spartans’ 3-2, Section Two win notched an assist. at home last Tuesday.

Nurses Invited To Report For Honor Guard Duty By Dayna M. Reidenouer
After Joni Sweigart, MSN, CRNP, saw a post on social media about a nurse honor guard, she reached out to a friend she had made early in her career, Jean de Groot Banzhof, MSN, RN, and suggested they form a similar group. Banzhof replied, “Let’s try.”
That was earlier this year. The two have co-founded the Lancaster County Nurse Honor Guard (LCNHG) by setting a tentative framework in place. Before making anything final, however, they would like to have the input of current or retired nurses - registered (RN) or licensed practical (LPN) - in good standing. Sweigart and Banzhof
will host an organizational meeting at Lyndon City Line Diner, 1370 Manheim Pike, Lancaster, at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, May 6. “Incidentally, that happens to be Nurses’ Day,” Banzhof pointed out. During the meeting, Banzhof will give a presentation about the purpose of the guard and how it

will be utilized, as well as what she and Sweigart have come up with to carry out its function. “We have some thoughts, but we’re open to input from more people,” Sweigart remarked. Banzhof and Sweigart have patterned the LCNHG off a similar organization in Michigan. They noted that the guard in that state is active and a good resource for guards in other states. The idea behind the LCNHG is that just as nurses served within a community during life, they should be honored by their colleagues at their death. Based on what they have seen other guards do, Sweigart and Banzhof have created a short ritual of remembrance that may be used at funerals or memorial services. They imagine a group of three or four LCNHG members wearing white uniforms and red-lined blue capes conducting a tribute that will include the reading of a poem, the chiming of a bell to signal the release from duty, and the presentation of a white rose. Once finalized, information about the tribute and the LCNHG will be distributed to all the funeral directors in Lancaster County. The services can be individualized depending on the deceased’s family’s wishes. The LCNHG will help families create tables of remembrance to represent late nurses’ careers. To be successful, the LCNHG will need a commitment from several dozen people. Individuals will need to be able to cover morning, afternoon, or evening services on weekdays and weekends. There will be no cost for the tribute service. “We are recognizing the sacrifice the family made by the person being a nurse,” Sweigart said. The women noted that with the numerous retirement homes and
the presence of several nursing schools, the population of current or former nurses in Lancaster County is quite high. Thus, they believe it makes sense to form an honor guard. Thankfully, interest in the guard has been relatively high, with just over 30 people having indicated that they plan to attend the meeting. Additional folks are welcome and should register by emailing lancastercounty nursehonorguard@gmail.com. Those who are unable to attend the meeting but are interested in the guard may send an email to request ongoing updates on the
organization. The organizers anticipate meeting again in two months, with hope to have the guard up and running by the beginning of September. There will be costs associated with the guard. Members must provide their own white uniform, but the LCNHG will purchase capes that will be shared among the members, as well as flowers, chimes, and lanterns for the displays. Sponsorships are available to cover the guard’s costs, which will eventually include the fee to apply for nonprofit status. To learn more, folks may send an email to the aforementioned address.
Lancaster County Nurse Honor Guard co-founders Joni Sweigart (left) and Jean de Groot Banzhof will host an informational meeting on May 6 at Lyndon City Line Diner to discuss how the guard may pay tribute to deceased nurses at their memorial services.
