GSHS Students Garner First Place In STEM Competition By Ann Mead Ash
Last fall, Danya Rose, a member of the Garden Spot High School (GSHS) Technology Student Association (TSA), had an idea. “We wanted to do something that impacted the community,” said Rose, referring to his subsequent collaboration with fellow TSA members William Culbert and Ryan Troop in September 2019. At that point, the trio was not sure what they might create, but Rose had an interest in plants, so they contacted Grassland FFA officers Allison Zimmerman and Andrew Horst about developing something that would aid in plant growth. The group began working on a project that eventually came to be called the Plant Hopper. Similar to a Ferris wheel, the design for the six-foot-tall apparatus includes a computer program that stores the information for the light, water, and
nutrients needed for optimum growth of certain types of plants. The Hopper would conserve space in greenhouses while holding up to 16 plant trays of eight plants each. In October 2019, while the students were working on the initial design for the Plant Hopper, Dr. Robert Hollister, ELANCO School District superintendent, contacted faculty member Joe Steinmacher, who advises TSA, about the Pennsylvania Governor’s STEM Competition. For the contest, teams of students research, design, and present a device that can improve quality of life. Steinmacher approached Rose about creating the Hopper for the competition. As the team moved forward to complete the model Hopper in time for the Lancaster region competition, which was held on Feb. 11 at the Lancaster-Lebanon IU 13 offices in Lancaster, the three TSA members were See GSHS Students pg 3

On March 4, about 50 area residents gathered in a meeting room at Yoder’s Banquet Facility, 14 S. Tower Road, New Holland. The residents were there at the invitation of Garden Spot Fire Rescue (GSFR) of New Holland. According to Daryl Groff, GSFR director of development, the event, dubbed Farm Safety Day, was the first of its kind presented by GSFR in partnership with Lancaster Extension office and Penn State. The Farm Safety Day 2020 program began at 9 a.m. with a propane safety program presented by Rick Bunn of Martindale Propane. At 9:30 a.m., Dr. Nathan Kapp of Conestoga Animal Hospital discussed animal medication. At 10:15 a.m., Steve Brown from the Penn State University (PSU) Agricultural Department talked about grain bins and confined spaces, and at 10:45 a.m., Kay L. Services parted ways. Bridge of Hope, a national organization that fights homelessness through community support efforts, made the decision to operate Bridge of Hope programs separately in both Lancaster and Chester counties. In Lancaster County, Audrey Metzler became the county director, moving into the organization’s new offices at 255 Butler Ave., Suite 205, Lancaster, in December. Metzler worked for Bridge of Hope for more than a decade, leaving her post in 2008 and returning to the organization and to Lancaster in late 2019. the family may need. Yoder noted that many volunteers are not aware of how valuable their help can be. “We are really emphasizing that one of the gifts group members bring the families facing homelessness is social capital that they might not even know they have,” she said, explaining that social capital refers to connections within the community that can help meet the family’s specific needs. “Oftentimes neighboring volunteers don’t realize the assets they have access to because of who they know (in the area),” she noted. Both Metzler and Yoder told of instances when neighboring volunteers connected with dentists, mechanics, or others to provide services a family needed at little or no cost. One goal of Bridge of Hope is to move a family into housing within two months of entering the program. To reach that milestone, the organization partners with faith-based groups and landlords within a community. “We provide rental assistance on a decreasing basis,” explained Yoder. “ We are looking for landlords who want to support

faith groups, such as Bible studies and small groups. “I will be recruiting and training neighboring volunteers from local churches and matching them up with families (facing homelessness),” said Metzler, who explained that groups help to support families who are on the brink of homelessness. She shared that responsibilities are often divided with designated positions, including a group coordinator, members who help find housing, a child care c oordinator, and a transportation coordinator. According to Edith Yoder, national executive director of Bridge of Hope, the volunteer groups are referred to as neighborhoods of support. “There’s a case manager and six to 10 volunteers from a neighboring church,” said Yoder, who noted that the volunteer group members are encouraged to get to know the head of the family they will work with, often the mother, and then spend time with the family engaging in fun group activities. Rose was the computer coding expert, and Culbert worked with the computer modeling plans. “(Culbert) was able to put the thoughts in Rose’s head in a computer model,” said Steinmacher, who added, “(Troop) is very good at taking an idea and making it real.” As the group members began to work on creating the prototype, they realized they needed more agricultural information. Enter Zimmerman and Horst, who joined the team in November 2019. During November and December 2019, the students worked diligently to complete the blueprints of the computer models. “Effective communication was a big part of this,” said Rose, who noted that the program was tested regularly to be sure it would work
with different types of plants. By Feb. 7, the group had completed and submitted the necessary documentation, including a budget, origins of the idea, and how the invention could impact the community. On Feb. 11, the GSHS students traveled to the IU 13 building to compete against teams from six other area districts, including Conestoga Valley, Pequea Valley, and Lampeter-Strasburg, along with private schools such as Dayspring Christian Academy. During a 30-minute presentation for the judges, each GSHS team member talked about his or her contributions to the project and how the Hopper might be used to improve the local economy. Judges graded the groups on the presentation and the results of a teambuilding problem they were asked to solve, and they awarded the GSHS team first place. The GSHS team, which is composed of all sophomores, had hoped to have a working Hopper running by the middle of April, with their sights set on a regional competition that was to be held at Dixon University in Harrisburg in May. The competition would have included up to 30 teams from around the state, all vying for first prize, which would garner each member of the winning team a $2,000 scholarship. “They are still planning to hold the competition virtually,” reported Steinmacher, adding that the teams must submit their written documentation and a recording of their presentation by Saturday, June 6.

Farm Safety Day from pg 1 Steve Braun of PSU Extension gave a presentation on family safety equipment, blind spots, and driveway safety. At 11:15 a.m., Moyer discussed the dangers of gases from silos and manure, and at 11:45 a.m., Tim Bender, chief credit officer with Bank of Bird-in-Hand, discussed the benefits of farm commodity gifts. Following lunch, a twohour continuing education course on pesticides was given by Jeffrey S. Graybill. In her presentation about
driveway safety, Moyer advised children, who made up a portion of the audience, and their parents to have a “safe spot,” such as a railing or fencepost, to touch when a milk truck or other vehicle entered the dooryard. Her discussion of gases explained that humans should breathe air that contains more than 20% oxygen, noting that when the level is at less than 19%, a person will pass out. “You can’t run away if you’re knocked out,” said Moyer, who used a jar

it’s just a tipping point for the loader.” Peters emphasized that only experienced drivers should use a skid loader. “Operators must understand how to use the equipment, said Peters. “(They) need to understand the risk associated with manure storages and only use the designated locations with the safety bars and the gates.” Peters also discussed the need for fencing around any pit where the concrete wall is lower than 5 feet from the ground. He also emphasized the importance of having signage on the tanks that draws attention to risks such as deadly gases. GSFR Chief Darryl Keiser spoke just before lunch, explaining to those who attended that the fire company members are prepared to aid members of the farming community when they are in trouble. “We are here to help you in your time of need,” said Keiser. “We work hard to make sure we’re ready for that, whatever the incident might be.” Keiser also expressed gratitude to those who attended. “Thank you for being concerned (enough) to be here today to learn and be made aware of dangers on farms,” he said. filled with different-colored balls representing different gases to explain how gas displaces oxygen. She emphasized that because gas is heavier than air, it is often found at the bottom of silos and that ventilating the area before entering it may not be enough. “Gas can be in pockets in the lowest level (of a silo),” said Moyer, who added that in the summer, humidity can keep gases in low spots even if the area has been ventilated. She recalled an incident in July 2007 where five people died because of gas pockets in the bottom of a silo. She recommended calling 911 for help when an emergency occurs rather than going into a dangerous area to try to save someone. “There is no quick (rescue) with gas,” she warned. “We don’t want you hurt.” Tim Peters of Natural Resources Conservation Service gave a presentation on the dangers of manure storage pits, noting that every year accidents occur in these areas of farms and that he believes many of those accidents are preventable. He discussed skid loader accidents around manure storages, saying, “It’s never safe to use a skid loader to dump manure over a fence of any kind. The risk is just too high when the skid loader is loaded and the bucket is up too high;

IMPACT! Missions Continues To Serve “Now that county residents have been ordered to shelter in place, it is more important than ever that every family has somewhere to stay that is warm, dry, and livable, IMPACT! Missions (IM) founder and executive
director Matt Beakes wrote in an email newsletter on March 31. “As this crisis unfolds, IMPACT! Missions has not wavered in its commitment to making a difference in the lives of our Lancaster County neighbors who are struggling with poverty and limited housing.

The IM emergency repair ministry to low-income homeowners is continuing to operate, albeit with modified protocols. The work crews are averaging two projects a week. These have included building a wheelchair ramp for a woman who needed to come home to avoid being quarantined in a physical rehabilitation facility, dealing with mold remediation and installing new cabinets in a kitchen with an ongoing leaky faucet, and replacing a leaking shower head and repairing damage to the ceiling and wall as well as installing handrails for safety in the home of a single mother with four children. “We are practicing social distancing by working on open air projects, and the enclosed projects we are separating by rooms, and family units are staying together, Beakes related. “We also provide cleaning materials and wipes to wipe off tools and materials. We have hot water and soap on hand as well as packets of hand sanitizers. We do have masks - not the preferred ones used by the medical community and request anyone not feeling well in any manner to stay home. On a limited basis, IM is continuing to renovate blighted properties for eventual resale.

Four houses are in process, with the goal to have them ready to be shown as soon as possible once the situation improves. A significant amount of working capital is tied up in those projects, however, as the sale proceeds are IM’s single largest source of operating revenue. That has put some financial strain on the organization. Another source of uncertainty has been the temporary closure of the IM building products store at 55 Refton Road, Refton. The store was closed to the public in mid-March in compliance with state directives. Ironically, one of IM’s goals for 2020 was to expand the store’s operating hours from two days to three. Having to go in the opposite direction has resulted in a loss of about $2,500 in revenue every week. Community support has been integral to IM’s ongoing work in Lancaster County. The organization celebrated its 10th anniversary on Feb. 22. IM started out in southern Lancaster County as a way for church groups to save on the costs of weeklong mission trips by offering local work camps serving residents in need. Over the decade, it has morphed into much more and now serves the entire county. Beakes related that IM has overseen the project management on the renovation of 30 houses, most of which had been condemned. “We restored neighborhoods and communities, he said. “We not only made houses beautiful, but we

arriving, Bucher met a woman named Diana Wiener, who had journeyed from Kentucky to the event. Case explained that Wiener is a member of a Gold Star Family, meaning that she is an immediate family member of a service member who died while serving in a time of conflict. “We are now friends with her,” said Baccio. McCullough explained that Wiener lost her son, Jeffery, who was serving in the Navy in 2014, but Bucher added that the pain of losing Jeffery was still fresh when the two women met. The experience of meeting Wiener and learning her story made such an impression on Case that he returned to Pennsylvania eager to talk to his Scout troop about ways to help out. “A lot of (members of) my den like to fish,” said Case. “We thought, ‘Why not hold a fishing tournament?’” Bucher explained that the family has been working with Matthew Adams, an executive at the Pennsylvania Dutch Council of Boy Scouts of America. “I asked if he could help, and he suggested we hold it at Camp Mack, and the Boy Scouts would help promote it,” said Bucher. She added that she is especially grateful to friends and family taking part in the effort. The fishing tournament will offer special categories and rates for those who have certain connections to the military. The

Bucher Elementary thirdgrade student and Cub Scout Pack 93 member Case Baccio likes to fish, and so do his friends. “A lot of people I know love to fish,” said Case. After attending a Warrior Weekend to Remember in Milltown, Ohio, in July of 2019, Case had an idea. The gathering, which is sponsored by Blue Skies for the Good Guys and Gals (BS3G), the nonprofit arm of the Fastrax sky diving team, is held to honor veterans, Purple Heart Warriors, and families of fallen heroes. The event includes enriching experiences that facilitate friendships and encourage emotional healing. Inspired by the gathering, Case decided to combine his love of fishing with a goal of raising $8,000 in scholarships to send two participants to the 2020 Warrior Weekend, scheduled for Wednesday, July 8, to Sunday, July 12. Case is working with others to organize the Clear Water for Heroes Fishing Tournament, which will be held at the J. Edward Mack Scout Reservation, more commonly known as Camp Mack, 2 Scout Lane, Newmanstown, on Sunday, May 17. The tournament will be open to both children and adults. The adult tournament will be held from 7 to 11 a.m., followed by a barbecue lunch, and the children’s tournament will occur from 1 to 3 p.m. According to Eric McCullough, who is helping Case to organize the event, scoring of the competition will be based on each participant’s heaviest catches. “(Contestants) will be scored on their top five (fish),” explained McCullough, who noted that the Camp Mack lake is home to fish in a variety of sizes. Case attended the 2019 Warrior Weekend with his mother, Ali Bucher, and McCullough, who is Bucher’s boyfriend. “My mother’s boyfriend is a professional skydiver with Team Fastrax,” explained Case. Team Fastrax is a professional skydiving team that supports the Warrior Weekend. “They bring together veterans and family members of veterans who were killed,” added Case. McCullough, who was a new member to the team in early 2019, wanted Case and Bucher to learn about the Weekend to Remember. Shortly after

Local recipient organizations of the Giant Company’s latest donation include Water Street Mission, Lancaster; West Chester Food Cupboard, West Chester; York County Food Bank, York; and Helping Harvest Food Bank, Reading. Last month, the Giant Company announced a donation of $250,000 to four local hunger relief organizations. These include Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, Philabundance, Maryland Food Bank and Meals on Wheels Pennsylvania. In addition, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Penn State Children’s Hospital, the Janet Weis Children’s Hospital at Geisinger, Children’s National Hospital and Johns Hopkins Children’s Center each received $50,000 to support COVID-19 mitigation efforts. Customers looking to join the Giant Company and support hunger relief efforts can round up their purchase at self-checkout to the nearest dollar, with funds benefiting regional food banks.

While Penn State Health currently has what it needs to protect its health care workers and care for its patients in response to COVID-19, events are changing rapidly. Penn State Health recognizes that it could experience shortages in the future and has begun accepting drop-off donations of critical supplies from the community. Penn State Health will accept drop-off donations of key supplies from the community-atlarge at three area locations. Those locations are Penn State Health Center, 175 Crystal A Drive, Hershey; Penn State Health St. Joseph Foundation Office (blue building front), 1036 MacArthur Road, Reading; and Penn State Health Medical Group - Lancaster Clinical Lab, 2301 Columbia Ave., Lancaster. Penn State Health has plans in place to manage patients with special illnesses while safeguarding patients, hospital visitors, health care workers, and the community. To ensure doctors, nurses and other staff treating COVID-19 patients remain safe and healthy, Penn State Health has distributed personal protective equipment and patient hygiene kits to all clinic and practice sites. In addition, Penn State Health continues to adopt best practices in its ongoing commitment to safety and high-quality care for its communities. While Penn State Health appreciates the community support, residents are reminded to follow the latest guidance from the Pennsylvania Department of Health and the Pennsylvania Governor’s Office about leaving their homes for nonessential travel. Individuals are encouraged to consolidate their essential trips with drop-off activities. For details about what, when, and where to donate, readers may visit https://hmc.pennstate health.org/community.

Pettis Earns Entomologist Certificate
Shawn Pettis Locally-owned Dominion Pest Control, which serves the Susquehanna Valley, recently announced that its general service manager, Shawn Pettis, has become the first person to become a public health entomologist (PHE) certificate holder, a new certification offered by the Entomological Society of America (ESA). Pettis recently received his PHE certification after becoming an associate certified entomologist (ACE), which indicates that the certified person has acquired skills to identify insects and understand their biology. The PHE certificate acknowledges that the holder “studied for and passed a rigorous exam covering insects and the diseases they vector, as well as principals of integrated pest management.” In today’s world with diseases like West Nile virus and Lyme disease related to pests found in backyards, such as ticks and mosquitoes, Dominion is pleased to have Pettis on board to help make decisions about control measures that can be implemented on customers’ properties. Pettis is a graduate of Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology, where he studied business and currently serves on the board of governors. Pettis was recently featured in a pest industry magazine, Pest Management Professional (PMP), for his ACE and PHE achievements. WellSpan Health and Mennonite Disaster Services (MDS) recently announced that they are joining the 100 Million Mask Challenge, an initiative launched by the American Hospital Association to help meet the growing demand for masks during the COVID-19 pandemic. The 100 Million Mask Challenge is a nationwide effort calling on manufacturers, the business community and individuals across the country to coordinate efforts to rapidly produce needed personal protective equipment on a large scale for the nation’s health care heroes. The current supply of masks in some parts of the country has not been able to keep up with the demand. WellSpan is providing the funding for material for this new initiative to make an additional 50,000 masks, and volunteers from MDS, with assistance from Good’s Stores, are packaging the kits of pre-cut material to be used. Each kit has enough material and instructions for sewing 50 masks. WellSpan has opened sites across southcentral Pennsylvania where community members may pick up kits and donate masks. Readers may obtain kits and donate masks on Mondays through Fridays at the following locations: 601 Memory Lane, York, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; 501 Alexander Drive, Ephrata, from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and 717 S. Eighth St., Lebanon, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Pickups and donations will also be available at 660 Orchard Drive, Chambersburg, from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.; 450 S. Washington St., Gettysburg, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; and WellSpan Health and Surgery Center, 1227 Baltimore St., Hanover; from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sewers who use the provided kits are asked to return the completed masks to the same donation site where they obtained the kits. There is no need to call ahead or reserve a kit. To make or donate masks, readers may visit www.WellSpan.org/COVID19 Help to download the approved pattern or call the coronavirus information hotline at 855-8513641 and select option 4. Webinar To Focus On Work Visa Program Penn State Extension will present a town hall-style, web-based seminar on Thursday, May 7, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. to assist Pennsylvania agricultural stakeholders who rely on the H-2A visa program for temporary workers to operate their businesses. The session will cover COVID-19 mitigation efforts, such as international travel restrictions and consulate closures, that have
disrupted the normal functioning of the H-2A visa program. These disruptions to the H-2A program raise questions about the arrival of guest workers and the impact on essential food and agricultural businesses. The webinar also will address the dangers of COVID-19 itself and will raise similar questions around how to protect the health and well-being of these

how immigrant farm communities are experiencing the pandemic; and what legislative fixes are either in the pipeline or should be considered. The second half will include a time for questions and answers with the guest speakers, and webinar attendees are encouraged to send their questions beforehand. They also will be able to ask their questions in a live chat with the panelists during the webinar. Guest speakers will include

The City of Lancaster Office of Promotion and the Lancaster City Alliance recently released a bingo game to promote a safe and fun way to continue shopping and dining in Lancaster city amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The first of four bingo cards will feature city restaurants that offer takeout; cards are available on the @visitlanccity Instagram account or by emailing LOOP @cityoflancasterpa.com. Participants who want to play bingo and compete for a prize will
order takeout or delivery from the eateries listed on the card to complete a vertical, horizontal, or diagonal line across the card to achieve bingo. Participants should photograph themselves enjoying the food or just the food itself. Once they complete a line on the bingo card, participants may submit their completed card and photographs by emailing their photos to LOOP@cityoflancasterpa.com or sending a direct message on Instagram to @visitlanccity with
the photos and the marked card attached. Each bingo submitted will be entered into a drawing to receive Downtown Dollars for a dining experience. More than one entry may be submitted. If there are two bingos on one card, that counts as two entries. One winner will be drawn every two weeks. The first two bingo
cards will feature restaurants, and the next two cards will feature city retail shops. The bingo idea came from Provo City, Utah. To plan a visit or for event information, readers may visit www.VisitLancasterCity.com. For more information about Lancaster City Alliance, readers may visit www.lancastercityalliance.org.

The financial contributions through the online fundraising campaign will help ensure people can receive healthy meals, while staying safe in their homes. In the midst of the stay-at-home order across the commonwealth and the associated social distancing guidelines, the online food drive offers a way to support those in need.
