Jack and his wife, Christine Conant Brubaker, will be interviewed by Don Horning when they are the featured guests of the New Holland Area Historical Society (NHAHS) on Thursday, May 16, at 7 p.m. in the chapel at Garden Spot Village, 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland.

Jack graduated from Conestoga Valley High School and went on to attend Dickinson College as an English major. Although he originally had no interest in journalism, by 1970, he was writing for the Danville Register in Danville, Va., where

In 2023, the Bowmansville Fire Company (BFC) yard sale was rained out. The sub sandwich sale that is part of the event was still held, so the fundraiser was not a total washout.

This year, the sale is scheduled for Saturday, May 18, at the fire company, 146 W. Maple Grove Road, Bowmansville. According to BFC representative Zachary High, the yard sale usually attracts at least 30 area residents with items to sell. For a nominal fee, spaces

are open to crafters and vendors as well. Readers who are interested may call 610-488-2882 to see if spaces are still available. Those renting spaces may set up beginning at 6 a.m. on the day of the event, and the yard sale will open at 7 a.m.

The BFC food stand will open at 6 a.m. to sell breakfast sandwiches, coffee, juice, and chocolate milk. The stand will remain open until 10 a.m.

According to BFC representative Leon King, the sub sandwich sale will also be held, and ham, Italian,

Spaghetti dinner to benefit family

The Alliance of Bikers Aimed Toward Education (ABATE) of Pennsylvania Lancaster County Chapter 65 and Pennsylvania Canine Search and Rescue (PACSAR) will hold a spaghetti dinner to benefit the family of Jackson Sensenig. The event will take place on Saturday, May 18, from 3 to 7 p.m. at St. John’s Center United Church of Christ, 432 Reading Road, East Earl. There is a fee.

Jackson was an active 4-year-old until March 2023, when he started having stomach pain, leg pain, and high fevers. Four weeks later, he was diagnosed with Stage 4 high-risk neuroblastoma at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Jackson endured many hospital stays, as well as procedures and chemotherapy.

Around Christmas 2023, he received his first stem cell transplant, which involved a 35-day hospital stay. He was admitted to CHOP on Feb. 22, 2024, for his second stem cell transplant. After undergoing pre-transplant chemotherapy, he received the transplant on March 1. The next day, he experienced a brain bleed and spent five weeks in the PICU. Due to unforeseen major complications, Jackson died on April 6. Jackson impacted the lives of family members, friends, medical care teams, and others he never met who followed his story through social media and word of mouth. When Jackson when at home between hospital stays, he made the most of his time, engaging in the activities of a regular kid.

Students visit Gettysburg battlefield

Pathways High School students took a field trip to Gettysburg National Military Park on March 26. They started their tour at the Visitors Center, where they saw the cyclorama and museum.

From there, they toured the battlefield. They began at the Eternal Light Peace Memorial on Oak Ridge, where the Confederates were able to push the Union forces from McPherson Ridge and through the town, where they dug into the south along Cemetery Ridge. The group then moved into the key locations of the second day along the Confederate stronghold of Seminary Ridge and a

few key battle points like Devil’s Den. As the final part of their Gettysburg experience, they started at the Virginia Memorial on Seminary Ridge and walked the mile-long path of Pickett’s Charge to the Union line on Cemetery Ridge and the high water mark of the Confederate advance that brought the third and final day of battle to a close.

Students participating in the field trip were Abigail Addison, Kirsten Bly, Anna Brubaker, Gavi Burton, Nate Crocker, Barbara Culbert, Ellie Culbert, Clayton Eberly, Sadie Fisher, Gavin Forney, Josh Hagan, Cole Harting, Kaiden Harting, Luke Harting, Riley

Hoffman, T.J. Horning, Zoe Horst, Logan Matz, Caleb Myers, Cameron Nolt, Kyle Nolt, Henry Rohrbaugh, Josie Rudolph, Havilah Spinetti, Reilly Stark, Brooke Zimmerman, Morgan Zimmerman, Braden Zook, and Marcus Zook.

Staff members Mary Jane Sendecki and Rachel Graves, along with head of school Wanda Swarr were in attendance, and Brett Fisher served as a chaperone. Keith Stoltzfus was the bus driver.

50-year members honored

On April 28, six members of Cedar Grove Presbyterian Church were recognized for their 50-year membership with the organization. During the church service, the Rev. Krisana Poontajak held a blessing to honor God for a cloud of witnesses and to recognize longtime members.

Members who have belonged to the congregation for 50 years or more are Barbara A. Overly, who could not be present; Robert D. Herr; Diana E. Boley; E. Ronald Deshong; Vickie L. Kahler; and Scott H. Sweigart. Long-term members who are deceased are Mildred R. Boley, Betty W. Herr, Ruth A Means, Rodney L. Usner, Douglas W. Weaver, and Carol B. Weaver.

During the blessing, Poontajak referenced Deuteronomy 7:9 and Hebrews 1:1-2. She charged the honorees to lead a life of humility, gentleness and patience. The hymn “Christ the Upward Way” was sung. A handout included brief biographies of all those honored with regard to their association and history with the church. Photo boards, albums, and displays were set up in the church vestibule for attendees to peruse. Following the service, all were welcome to enjoy cake and

other refreshments.

Cedar Grove is located at 4833 Division Highway, East Earl. Indoor and drive-in services are held

each Sunday at 10 a.m. More information about the church may be found at www.cedargrovepresby terianlanc.org.

Reaching out and giving back

When Amanda Hall, director of marketing with Bank of Bird-in-Hand, contacts a nonprofit organization for the bank’s employee giving program, she likes to ask about specific needs. “That has been

really helpful,” she noted, adding that one food pantry she contacted told her that having manual can openers to give away is really helpful. “If you’re living in your car or a hotel, it’s good to have a can opener,” Hall pointed out. “Not every can has a pop top.”

Bank of Bird-in-Hand recently reached its 10 year anniversary, and Hall said the employee giving program - originally called the Jeans Day program - has been going on for several years. “Each month, they would select a nonprofit and make a suggested

donation, and (employees who donated) could wear jeans that day,” said Hall. As dress codes evolved, the program changed and sometimes donation drives were mixed in with the giving program, which benefited a different local organization each month. For 2024, Hall decided to change things up a little. Rather than choose one organization and collect a lot of different items, Hall decided to focus on a few designated items and spread them out to a number of organizations. In February, the employees collected bottles of laundry detergent, detergent pods, and other laundry supplies. Employees in the five Lancaster County branches - located in Bird-in-Hand, Intercourse, Paradise, Ephrata, and Manheim - as well as outside the county, took part. “It was successful,” said Hall, who noted that more than 300 containers were collected and

distributed to 10 organizations. “People don’t think of donating (detergent) to a food pantry,” she noted. “All the organizations were so appreciative.” Local nonprofits that received the donations included The Factory Market, Good Samaritan Services in Ephrata, Solanco Neighborhood Ministries, CrossNet Ministries, REAL Life Community Services in Denver, and the Manheim Central Food Pantry.

Spring road safety urged

Pennsylvania farmers are returning to their fields for spring planting, which means that drivers should be alert for large farm equipment on rural roadways.

Drivers are also reminded to be patient, wear a seat belt, and not drive impaired or distracted.

Looking ahead, Hall has been talking to local nonprofits about summer projects. “In June, when kids are out of school, they need snack foods and peanut butter and jelly,” she said. “I want to make sure (the nonprofits) are getting things they can use to meet the needs of the community.”

During the month of April, Hall connected the drive with Earth Day, focusing on repurposing items such as blankets, sheets, and towels for pet rescues including Pet Pantry of Lancaster County, Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary, Raven Ridge Wildlife Center, Centerville Pet Rescue, and Eliannie Animal Rescue. Hall’s marketing assistant, Tory Aldinger, said that paper towel rolls and bleach were also requested. In addition to donations, employees volunteer their time. In keeping with the Earth Day theme, volunteers picked up litter along a section of highway in Bird-in-Hand on April 25 as part of the Adopt-AHighway program. “With The Factory Ministries, (bank) staff members help out with big bingo events held in September and December,” noted Hall. “It’s a lot of fun. The staff enjoys helping, and it’s a great way to connect with the people in our community.”

School aids CrossNet Ministries

Every Valentine’s Day, Hinkletown Mennonite School (HMS) holds a school-wide giving project as a part of its efforts to teach students to be aware of and help to meet the needs in their local and global communities. This year, HMS families bought food and other necessities to donate to CrossNet Ministries, a nonprofit ministry based in New Holland. The ministry aims to empower people throughout the ELANCO area to steward and build upon their resources as well as to develop relationships with community members to see lives

As part of Rural Roads Safety Week, April 14 to 20, Pennsylvania Farm Bureau and its partners in the state government encouraged motorists to be cautious on roadways. Each year, Pennsylvania Farm Bureau partners with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture and Pennsylvania State Police to spread the message of staying safe on rural roads during the height of the spring planting season.

Farm equipment can legally be operated on roadways, including at night, but farmers are required to follow certain safety guidelines depending on the size of equipment moved. All farm equipment that travels at speeds less than 25 miles per hour is required to have a slow-moving vehicle emblem - an orange triangle with red outline - on the back of the equipment.

If drivers see the slow-moving vehicle emblem, they should slow down immediately. Drivers should be alert that farm equipment may be turning at an unexpected place, such as into a field, and may be making a wide left turn if it pulls to the right. Drivers should always be sure the oncoming lane is clear and visible before passing large equipment, and they should never pass in a no-passing zone or within 100 feet of any intersection, railroad grade crossing, bridge, elevated structure, or tunnel.

PFB, along with representatives from PennDOT, the Pennsylvania State Police and the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, as well as state Sen. Wayne Langerholc Jr., held a demonstration and event promoting Rural Roads Safety Week at Bill and Joyce Krug’s Farm in Loretto on April 15. County farm bureaus across Pennsylvania also hold local events in their communities to promote safe driving on rural roads. For additional information about Rural Roads Safety Week and safety tips for drivers and farmers, visit www.pfb.com/RRS.

changed by Jesus Christ. By organizing a food drive for this year’s Valentine’s Day giving project, HMS aims to take on the role that Jesus asked His disciples to fill in Matthew 22:36-40 - to love their neighbors as themselves. The food drive was headed up by the middle school Student Council, which took leadership in organizing, promoting, and delivering the donations. In total, HMS gathered 801 pounds of food and household items.

he met Christine, who was dean of students at Stratford College. “Chris has a master’s in college administration,” noted Jack. The pair married and came to live in Lancaster in 1978. Jack went to work for the New Era, taking over “The Scribbler” about a year later. The column turned 105 years old in May, with Jack as its longest continuous author.

Over the years, Jack has written columns that included lists of interesting facts or focused on a particular story - especially local tales that reflect on historical matters. A favorite column concerned Lancaster Township residents who burned a large pile of bamboo, not realizing that the popping sound the variety makes while burning sounds like gunfire. Neighbors called first responders, and police and fire department personnel from local and neighboring townships arrived to extinguish the flames.

Jack’s column that elicited the most response from readers was penned in the 1980s and concerned a local cat that had birthed 30 kittens in a year. “I received

33 letters saying that was a terrible thing, and that cat should be spayed,” Jack recalled.

Chris, who worked in admissions at Franklin & Marshall College and did substitute teaching work while raising the couple’s children, has an interest in environmental issues. She served as the last volunteer president of the Lancaster Conservancy. For the last few years, she has served as the primary editor of Jack’s column. “Because she’s not from here, she doesn’t know as much about local history,” pointed out Jack. “She often finds things I take for granted.”

In addition to his columns, Jack is the author of several books about local history, including “Down the Susquehanna to the Chesapeake,” which was named one of the best books of the year by the Washington Post when it was published in 2002.

The program is free and open to the public. More information about NHAHS may be found at https:// nhhistorical.com or by searching for “New Holland Area Historical Society” on Facebook.

We demonstrated shaking hands and making eye contact,” said Hackman, who noted students could complete a worksheet to have businesses sign after they interacted. “Many teachers offered extra credit for completing that document,” Hackman added.

When planning the fair, Hackman is strategic about trying to provide opportunities for all

GSHS students. “I try to have something for everyone,” she said. “We try to get different businesses that hire ages 14 to 18 plus. (Students) might be looking for a part-time or summer job, or they can talk to a business looking for a future job,” she said. “Freshmen and sophomores could say, ‘I am interested in becoming a construction worker.
