Preventing Avian Flu Infection
Lancaster County continues to grapple with the avian flu, and local residents should keep various facts and tips in mind.
Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) does not impact humans, but there is no cure for avian flu. HPAI is transmitted through contact with fecal matter from wild birds, infected birds, contaminated equipment, and contaminated boots and clothing.
In order to protect flocks from the disease, backyard chicken owners should employ several precautions. Poultry should be kept inside its coop to avoid contact with wild birds. Birdhouses and feeders used by wild birds should be removed. People should wear dedicated footwear and clothing to work with birds. Hands should be washed before and after working with birds. Equipment in contact with birds should be cleaned and disinfected. Visitors to the premises should be limited.
Anyone who witnesses unexplained illness or death within his or her flock should contact the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture (PDA) at 717772-2852. Pennsylvanians can assist with HPAI surveillance efforts by reporting any sick or dead wild birds to the Pennsylvania Game Commission by contacting 610-926-3136 or pgc-wildlifehealth@pa.gov. Any sick or dead domestic birds should be reported to PDA. Information for commercial producers is available at www.padls.agriculture.pa.gov.
