OMaintaining the monument

n Memorial Day, Dave Stern, a member of the group that cares for the Veterans Monument of ELANCO, was up at 5 a.m. Accompanied by his nearly-7-year-old granddaughter, Dave prepared the monument to be the last stop on the United Veterans Council Memorial Day Pilgrimage. “She loves (helping),” noted Dave.

“This (monument) is for people born in the Garden Spot school district who go into the service and don’t return.”

The monument was placed in the New Holland Community Memorial Park, 400 E. Jackson St., in the 1980s. To help maintain the structure a group, which includes Dave and his wife Brenda, along with treasurer Dale Mendenhall and secretary Ann Brill, has formed. A fundraiser to benefit the maintenance of the monument will be held on Sunday, June 9, in the banquet hall at the New Holland Legion Conestoga Post 662, 35 S. Hoover Ave., New Holland. Doors for the cash bingo event will open at 2 p.m., and games will begin at 3 p.m. Specialty games and other fundraisers will be part of the event. Advance tickets for 20 games will be discounted. Food and beverages will be available. Dave pointed out that annual work is necessary to keep the

monument properly maintained. “We replace the flags yearly. We have the monument pressure washed, and we have the concrete pressure washed with environmentally friendly chemicals,” he said, adding that caulking to keep moisture from

collecting behind the granite slabs that make up the monument is done every two years. Electrical work is also necessary so the flags are illuminated.

The CrossNet Ministries transportation ministry was founded in 2018 to serve children and adults living in the ELANCO School District.

In March of 2021, volunteer drivers were transporting area residents about five times per month, but by May of 2024, that number had been multiplied by

at least 10.

Danielle Kissinger, social services program manager, who began overseeing the transportation ministry for CrossNet in January, said that the ministry averages 50 to 60 rides per month and that during the month of April, 80 area residents contacted CrossNet seeking rides. Kissinger manages that number with only

For a number of years now, the ELANCO School District has held a biennial Mini Relay For Life to raise awareness and funds for the American Cancer Society. The outdoor event is organized by the Garden Spot High School (GSHS) Health Council, a group of up to 40 students. The most recent event was planned for May 10, but when bad weather threatened, health teacher Julie Groft moved quickly to bring the

activities inside.

Students who entered GSHS by the back entrance that morning were met with multicolored laser lighting accompanied by popular tunes. In the cafeteria, students Kiki Cruz and Juliana Falls painted distinctive and colorful ribbons on students’ faces. Just prior to the start of the school day, Groft took to the public address system to explain the changes in the schedule and encourage participation. “(Mini Relay) is a day when the

Special Needs Benefit Auction scheduled in Ronks

Mervin Beiler, who has been attending the Sunny Sunbeam Center, located south of Route 30, for about 10 years, loves to greet visitors with the words, “Welcome to Sunny Sunbeam Center.” Beiler is the unofficial assistant to teacher Esther King, and he hurried to help answer questions for this article on the upcoming fundraiser that helps support Sunny Sunbeam and seven other area centers for members of the Plain community with special needs.

The 18th annual Special Needs Benefit Auction will be held on Monday, July 1, at Fisher’s Quality Dairy Sales, 3304 B Old Philadelphia Pike, Ronks. The auction will begin at 10 a.m., but a variety of foods will be offered for sale beginning at 5:30 a.m.

Sunny Sunbeam and the other centers - Special Hearts Circle, Sunbeam, Caring Hearts, New Horizons, Upper Valley Workshop, Shady Hollow, and Sunnyside Specials - together give the more than 100 adults who attend a chance to socialize and do productive work. Beiler noted that two of the 28 Sunny Sunbeam attendees come from Maryland.

Sunny Sunbeam attendees visit the center on Mondays and Wednesdays over the summer, and three days a week during the other seasons. Some days lunch is prepared at the center, and other days participants bring their own lunches. According to King,

entire district comes together for one cause,” announced Groft, who noted that every student would have been given the opportunity to walk the school track for 30 minutes in honor of someone who has or had cancer.

Garden Spot High School student Kiki Cruz (left) paints a cancer awareness ribbon on the face of Jack Larson during the Mini Relay For Life held at the school.

“(It’s) a day to build awareness around cancer and help fight against it,” Groft told students. Instead of 30 minutes on the track, students walked around their first block classroom for five minutes.

Health Council members in purple T-shirts visited classrooms to ask trivia questions about cancer.

Plans for this year’s event began in September 2023, and

fundraising and other activities commenced in April. A pickleball tournament was held at Blue Ball Elementary School, and, as in the past, a purple toilet and a flock of flamingoes were moved around New Holland as donors paid to have the items placed on friends’ lawns. In addition, Health Council members visited each of the district’s elementary schools to

participants arrive at 9 a.m., and the day begins with devotions, which includes reading a chapter from the Bible, praying, and singing.

Beiler noted that lessons are part of each morning session, featuring arithmetic, reading, spelling, and English, before lunch at 11:30 a.m. After lunch, there is a story time, followed by projects to be worked on. King said a group will focus on packaging poly clothespins, and other projects include making keychains with beads and, in the summer, mowing the yard.

Highlights of this year’s auction will include carriages, swing sets, and sheds. A 26-by-28-foot garage, built on the highest bidder’s site, will go up for auction. The building will have a concrete floor, two garage doors, and an attic with stairs. Other items will include grills, quilts, scooters, wagons, tools, and outdoor furniture.

Food that will be available for purchase at the auction includes breakfast items such as egg sandwiches, doughnuts, breakfast logs, and coffee. Among the lunch items will be cheesesteak sandwiches,

barbecued chicken and ribs, sub sandwiches, ham and cheese sandwiches, fried shrimp, salad, fruit cups, french fries, blooming onions, and soft pretzels. The list of beverages offered will include smoothies and iced coffee. Ice cream, fry pies, and baked goods will be on the dessert menu. Food may be eaten on-site or taken out. Drive-through service will be available from 5:30 a.m. through 6 p.m.

Beiler noted that on his first visit to Sunny Sunbeam in the fall, he was nervous, but by mid-December, he realized there was no reason to be scared, and now he enjoys the time he spends there.

eight volunteer drivers - six women and two men - all of whom are retirees. “Some weeks (drivers) may have one (assignment) per day,” said Kissinger, who noted that the same group of volunteers transports both children and adults.

The ministry transports resi -

dents to specific appointments, including medical, dental, and mental health visits, along with education-related meetings. Trips to grocery stores and to the CrossNet Food and Nutrition Center have recently been added to that list. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Volunteers

for driving both adults and children have had their driving records checked, and they have undergone the required clearances. Rider requests for women are sent to female drivers and for men to male drivers. Two vans are available for volunteers to use - one is located at CrossNet and the other at St. John’s Center United Church of Christ in East Earl - or volunteers may use their own vehicles.

Grocery trips were added for participants when a volunteer noticed that a number of individuals regularly needed rides to the store. “(The volunteer) will ask about van availability about twice a month (for grocery trips),” reported Kissinger.

“We could take more volunteers - especially (male) volunteers,” stated Kissinger, adding that sometimes men need rides, but no male volunteer is available to take them. “We’ve gotten around that when the volunteers are a married couple,” said Joan Yuninger, director of social services with CrossNet. “But for the most part, it’s challenging.” She pointed out that the commitment of a few volunteers has helped keep the program moving. “We have been blessed. Some of those volunteers do a lot,” she stated.

According to Kissinger, many of the ride requests are for medical appointments for retired people. “The volunteers know how important it is to get to those,” she stated, adding that the drivers and riders often get to know each other during the trips. “Our participants say, ‘All the volunteers are such good company. I enjoy talking to them.’”

Readers who are interested in volunteering or who are in need of transportation may contact CrossNet at 717-355-2454. More information about CrossNet Ministries may be found at https:// elancocross.org.
