John Styer, one of the organizers of Terre Hill Days, places great importance on the caliber of the acts he lines up to entertain attendees at the annual four-day event. “We like to keep (the entertainment) fresh, so we have lots of new (performances) we are looking forward to (this year),” stated Styer. This year’s Terre Hill Days will be held in the Terre Hill Park, 210 Lancaster Ave., Terre Hill, on Thursday through Sunday, July 19 through 22. The fun will kick off on July 19 at 5 p.m., when the rides, games, and food vendors will open. Magic by Jonathan will begin at 6:30 p.m. A strolling variety

show by Crickett the Entertainer will start at 7 p.m. Face painting by donation will be available for children near the main stage. Styer stated that this year’s event will include expanded food offerings, such as barbecue. Funnel cakes, ice cream, and other traditional fare will also be available for purchase. There will also be more variety offered in the amusement rides at the park. Wristbands entitling the wearer to unlimited rides may be purchased for July 19 to be used between 6 and 9 p.m. In 2017, the organizing committee planned a local music night to open the event, and the idea proved so popular it will return this year on July 19 with

Terre Hill Days will bring entertainment, a car show, and an expanded variety of rides to the Terre Hill Park from July 19 through 22. Organizers have lined up a number of musical acts, along with the traditional Outhouse Races, arts and crafts show, and fireworks.

“Isn’t he handsome?” Erika Herold practically gushed. Herold’s praise was not for a significant other or family member. Rather, it was bestowed on 6-month-old yellow Labrador named Woody who was happily rolling in the grass at Herold’s feet. Herold, a logistics analyst at Woodstream Corporation in Lititz, and other Woodstream employees raised $5,000 to sponsor Woody to become a United Disabilities Services Foundation (UDS) service dog. Woody is several months into the BARKS Prison Program, through which he is being trained by an inmate at Moshannon Valley Correction Center in Phillipsburg. While at the prison, Woody is living with his inmate handler around the clock. The inmate training program has proven to be successful. Normally, inmates teach puppies up to 50 commands, but many dogs are reaching that goal ahead of See Service Dog pg 6

When current New Holland Area Kiwanis Club president Mike Ireland learned of transportation needs in the community, he saw a chance for the club to be part of a solution. “Three years ago, when the ELANCO Community Collaboration meetings started, (transportation service) came up as an opportunity,” said Ireland. Meredith Dahl, CrossNet Ministries executive director, was excited to learn that the Kiwanis Club members wanted to help. “We shared the needs (affecting the community), and transportation was high (on the list),” recalled Dahl. “Kiwanis (members) said maybe it was something (they) could do.” Before the club could begin helping, however, it was necessary to obtain a vehicle. “We needed a van that would

CASA Volunteers from pg 1 Lancaster County community members were sworn in by the Hon. Jeffrey Reich as Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) volunteers on May 31 in the ballroom at Emerald Foundation Community Campus in Lancaster. The new volunteers join more than 200 others who have been trained and are advocating for foster children in the county’s dependency court

security of a loving family. CASA volunteers meet regularly with the child and interview people in the child’s life, including social workers, attorneys, teachers, doctors, and mental health professionals. The new volunteers include Rick Groff, Lancaster; Karyn Heichel, Lancaster; Jocelyn Mylin, Willow Street; Mary Beth Schweigert, Lancaster; Yvonne Tejada, Lancaster; Holly Mutchler, Lititz; Judy Swarthout, Elizabethtown; Melissa Davey, Landisville; Michelle Clements, Landisville;

Service Dog from pg 1 schedule. On June 8, Woody, accompanied by UDS staff accountant Mary Langton, visited Woody’s sponsors when the corporation held a company picnic at its facility. Langton said that Woody will spend a total of 18 months working with a designated inmate. “Woody will come back to us for (his) final six months of training to refine the skills he will need to (work with) the client he is chosen (to serve),” explained Langton. Langton is pleased with Woody’s progress so far. “He is very smart, and he seems to

Eby’s

bond quickly,” she said. As Woody lolled in the grass and employee sponsors rubbed his stomach, Langton noted, “He is not afraid of crowds.” Herold met Woody for the first time when UDS held a sponsor meet-and-greet event just before Woody left for Moshannon. “This is the first time we have sponsored a service dog,” said Herold, adding that the idea was brought to the company by an employee whose spouse is associated with UDS. During the training period, Herold receives updates concerning Woody,

which she passes along to employees. One of the privileges sponsors appreciate is the honor of helping to choose a moniker for their designated pup. “We had a company contest to name him,” said Herold, who passed along the three suggestions that received the most votes to UDS. “(Because UDS staff members) don’t know what disabilities the person he is matched with will have, they consider names for how easily they can be pronounced, so his name will work with anyone who is assigned to him,” Herold said,

adding that she was glad “Woody” was chosen because it reflects the company name. Herold said that when company staff first heard about the service dog sponsorship program, they were intrigued. “We said, ‘Wow, this is something we want to do,’” she shared. “It’s a win-win.” Herold explained that the employee sponsors were happy to know they are helping the inmate who is training the dog because that person receives the opportunity to become certified as a trainer and gain competence in an area. “ W hen he comes out (of prison, the inmate) has training to (work with) service dogs. It gives him a

niche skill,” said Herold. Of course, Herold is most excited about the chance Woody has to positively affect the life of a person with a disability. “He is going to be a lifeline,” said Herold. “(Woody) will affect not just the person, but their whole family, and he can give someone their life back. That gives me chills.” Herold is looking forward to the road ahead as Woody grows and learns the skills he will need to be a service dog. “Our sponsorship is for two years, and at the end we get to go to his graduation,” said Herold. “What really touches me is that it is a long program that will have an effect for years down the road.” Readers who would like to learn more about UDS may visit www.udservices.org.

Ephrata and New Holland Toyota partnered at the beginning of 2018 to help CrossNet purchase a van. Because one goal of Kiwanis Clubs is to help children, volunteers from the club came forward to be trained and receive clearances. They began fulfilling transportation requests in early May. “(To meet the club criteria, the request) needs to be for a child who needs transportation for education or health purposes, explained Dahl, who cited a recent situation where a Kiwanian filled that need. “Two children needed to get an eye exam, and they contacted CrossNet, and we contacted the Kiwanis Club, shared Dahl. “(With help from a Kiwanis volunteer, the children) were able to get to the eye doctor and get the help they needed to get glasses. Dahl noted that if a child needs transportation, a parent or guardian should call CrossNet. He or she will be referred to the CrossNet social worker, who will contact Kiwanis transportation coordinator Bruce Newell if the request meets the criteria. “Bruce will contact the team of Kiwanis volunteers who can drive and find someone and then get back to (CrossNet). Dahl added that the parent will need to sign a waiver. Newell noted that communication is an important factor. “We are able to make sure the driver is there on time and knows where they’re going and the person being picked up knows they have a driver, said Newell, who noted that Ireland, Lee Shaffer, and Dick Eby have

signed on to drive. Transporation help to anywhere within the county is available to those who qualify as living within the ELANCO School District. Newell added that the club has always donated funds for the needs of local children, but a few years ago, the focus began to shift to include volunteering time as well. “When Tom Fanning was president, he said, ‘We give a lot of money to support people, but what we don’t do so well is having members spending time getting involved with children,’ reported Newell. The transportation program signals a change in that area. “Kiwanis can report the number of hours of community service we perform, and one of our goals as a club is to increase the number of community service hours we put in, said Newell. “(The transportation ministry) is a good initiative. “We are thankful for the partnership with Kiwanis, said Dahl, who added that a separate transportation program made up of CrossNet volunteers is available through CrossNet to help local adults in need. Readers who are in need of transportation are encouraged to call the CrossNet office at 717-355-2454 to learn if their request can be met. The New Holland Kiwanis Club meets each Tuesday at noon at Garden Spot Village. Kiwanis International’s mission is to change the world, one child and one community at a time. The local club is open to new members. Readers who would like to learn more about the local club may call 717-445-6749.

The rat snakes like to eat thousands of rodents. They are an important part of the ecosystem.” He then showed the crowd a hognose snake. “They hiss as loudly as possible, like when you are getting a flat tire,” said Rothacker. “If you get closer, they roll over on their back and (play dead). If you roll him right side up, he will roll back over to try to convince you that he is still dead.” Rothacker emphasized that all animals - including venomous snakes - were created by God and that every creature has a purpose. “I understand that lot of people are scared of venomous snakes, but they take out rodents and ticks and things that need to be under control,” he said. “There is also some good that comes from venom. Of course, they make the anti-venom which is used when you get bit by a snake, but there are some medicines that are made from snake venom.” He explained that venom is an ingredient that is See Reptile Program pg 13

Youngsters in Sunday school at Grace and Truth Fellowship in Morgantown, along with their family members, were recently treated to a visit by Jesse Rothacker from Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary, who combined a live animal show with humor and lessons from the Bible. Rothacker brought many reptiles to the show, including snakes and turtles, and he often spoke with a live snake on his head or draped around his shoulders. His sense of humor was evident when he opened a box and said, “Well, there was supposed to be a snake in here,” encouraging the audience to look under their chairs for the escaped critter, who hadn’t really escaped at all. “There are four families of reptiles - snakes, lizards, crocodilians and turtles,” Rothacker said at the start of the program. “And you will meet all four today.” Rothacker displayed several varieties of snakes, including a corn

Landis Homes from pg 1 Landis Homes held a grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony on June 6 to celebrate the most recent addition to the retirement community’s campus in Lititz. Many people gathered to mark the official opening of the Calvin G. and Janet C. High Learning and Wellness Center and the new Crossings apartments. Attendees included residents, family members, donors, business partners, employees and neighbors. Speakers included Larry Zook, president and CEO, and Beth Trout, vice president of advancement.

The new center, which is centrally located on the 114-acre campus, includes an indoor pool, a fitness room and studio, a bistro, a hair salon, a pharmacy, a bank, an art gallery, offices and classrooms. The top two floors in the 103,000-squarefoot, four-level center hold 22 apartments. New apartment residents began moving in on May 21, and shortly afterward the aquatics and fitness center opened to offer new services and classes. The total cost of the project is $53 million and will include two

more structures. Now under construction, these will create 57 additional apartments, which are slated to open in late 2018 and spring of 2019. The Connections Capital Campaign raised more than $3.4 million through 340 donations. For more information about Landis Homes, readers may visit www.LandisHomes.org.
