According to Jeremy Horning, who directs Solid Rock Camp each summer at Hinkletown Mennonite School (HMS) with his wife, Casey, the three weeks of activity are all about introductions. “First, we want to introduce kids to Jesus if they don’t know Him,” said Jeremy. “That’s most important to help grow their faith and build friendships in a positive community.”
time,” Jeremy added. “We keep them moving and active.”

“It’s a sports camp, but for kids who just want to be active.”
This summer, Solid Rock began with a three-day Kids Camp, held June 12 through 14 for more than 100 children in grades one through three. “(Campers) are in small groups, and they do a variety of active stations,” said Jeremy, who described the camp as a cross between Bible school and gym class. “They have a Bible story, snack time, and playground
Solid Rock followed up Kids Camp with two weeks of Sports Camp for students in fourth through eighth grade, held the weeks of June 17 and June 24. The four-day camps ran from 1 to 8 p.m. each day, and dinner was provided. “Sports camp (offers) a different sport each day,” explained Jeremy, who noted that basketball, soccer, and volleyball are featured for boys and girls, with flag football just for boys and field hockey only for girls. “We like to say it’s an introduction to different sports,” shared Jeremy, who added that about 60 students attended each sports camp.
Solid Rock Camp is now in its 12th year. When Jeremy and Casey, who are both sports lovers, first held the camp, they were

Looking ahead to the 2024 New Holland Fair
BY ANN MEAD ASH
Each January, representatives of the New Holland Fair head to Hershey to attend the Pennsylvania State Association of County Fairs (PSACF) convention. This year, 15 representatives attended, along with New Holland Fair queen Ryleigh Libell, who competed against nearly 50 other fair queens at the event.
“We learn a lot there,” reported New Holland Fair board president Paulene Redding. “There are breakout sessions and roundtable
discussions, and we discuss things that worked or didn’t work, and we share ideas.”
Redding noted that the attendees always return to New Holland with new ideas for the upcoming fair. This year’s fair, which will be held from Wednesday, Oct. 2, through Saturday, Oct. 5, will feature a mobile petting zoo provided by Swartz’s Roadside Stand and sponsored by Martin Tree Service, Homestead Nutrition, CE Sauder and Sons, and Shady Maple. “(The petting zoo) will be there Friday and Saturday with rabbits, sheep,

BY FRANCINE FULTON
Local car enthusiasts will be excited to learn that the Keystone Region Chapter of the Studebaker Drivers Club (SDC) will hold its Atlantic Zone Meet on Wednesday through Saturday, July 24 to 27, at the Classic Auto Mall in Morgantown. The event will include a swap meet, a display of Studebakers and a cruise-in open to cars and trucks of all makes and models. This is the first time that the event has been held locally. Events will open on July 24 with
the swap meet and vehicle display from noon to 8 p.m. Studebakers will be on display both outside and in the two convention rooms at the Holiday Inn Morgantown, which is connected to the auto mall. “We have over 50 cars registered for the outdoor show,” said SDC member Jim Sinclair. “The indoor show is for any independent brand - not Ford, Chevy or Chrysler. Independents are the old Studebakers, the Kaisers and the Packards.”
July 24 will also feature a cruise-in and Food Truck Night.
Solid Rock Camp, held at Hinkletown Mennonite School, offered activities for children and an introduction to sports for older students over the summer.

and goats,” said Redding, who hopes to place the zoo on Franklin Street across from the farm show building and near the merry-goround. “We are trying to put the farm back in the farm show,” noted Redding.
The tug-of-war - long a fair tradition - made a comeback last year, with new sponsorship and prizes.
Ten teams participated with Intercourse Fire Company taking the top prize and Weaverland Valley Fire Department Team 1 placing second. Farmersville Fire Company
placed third, and Weaverland Valley Fire Department Team 2 placed fourth. The event was open to businesses, churches, and other organizations last year, with prize winners receiving $2,000, a $500 gift card to Yoder’s Country Buffet, and trophies for first place; $1,000 plus trophies for second place; $750 plus trophies for third place; and $500 plus trophies for fourth place. Each participating team that did not place received a consolation prize of $50. This year, the tug-of-war will move to its original location at the corner of Franklin Street and Railroad Avenue.
Live entertainment has been added to the fair in recent years, and for 2024, Redding noted that entertainment will be on Towne Centre Greene on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings.
The queen competition began in 2022, with Libell being only the second queen crowned. “We
are looking forward to having queen applicants again,” said Redding. Young women who wish to take part must be 16 to 20 years old and live in ELANCO, Pequea Valley, or Conestoga Valley School District, but contestants are not required to attend public school. Knowledge of the fair and the community will be a plus for the contestant. Redding is also looking for volunteers to help out at the fair.
“Case New Holland is providing T-shirts for our volunteers,” said Redding, who added that volunteers who work for four hours or more may bring a guest to the fair banquet. “We had 190 people attend last year,” said Redding, who added that at least 100 to 150 volunteers are needed to have a successful fair.
“We are looking for volunteers to help us follow through with new ideas, and we are open to
ideas they would bring about things they would like to see or change,” stated Redding.
The New Holland Farmers Fair building at the corner of Roberts Avenue and Franklin Street is in the process of getting an elevator. “We should have a working elevator by March of 2025,” pointed out Redding, who noted that $31,000 needs to be raised to complete the installation.
Another recent addition to the fair competitions is a coloring contest. Those wishing to take part in the coloring contest may download and print pages from www.newhollandfair.org or visit the ELANCO Library in September to pick them up. Readers who would like to donate, volunteer, or compete may visit the website. Readers with specific questions may email info@newhollandfair.org or call 717-354-5880.
Overholser family reunion posted
The Overholser Family Association invites Stauffers, Stouffers, and Stovers to its 2024 reunion,
which will be held on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 2 and 3. The reunion will focus on the ancestry of the Stauffers, which can be traced back to the first century and the imperial Hohenstaufen family of the Holy Roman Empire. The event will begin with a meet-and-greet at 6 p.m. on Aug. 2 at Yoder’s Family Restaurant, 14 S. Tower Road, New Holland. Attendees may visit the buffet or order from the menu, and they will pay for their own meals.
The gathering will run until 8 p.m. to allow adequate time for fellowship. A short address will be given on why the Stauffers are important to the reunion.
The main reunion will occur on Aug. 3 at St. John’s Center Church, 432 Reading Road (Route 625), Terre Hill. Attendees should arrive between 9 and 10 a.m., and coffee, tea, and snacks will be provided. A potluck luncheon will take place at noon, featuring sandwiches, fruit, and cold drinks. The festivities will include the reading of a letter from James and Kathy Overholser, who have not been able to attend the past few years. Attendees may bring information related to genealogy, and the items may be displayed in the air-conditioned meeting room.

Turnpike Commission warns of scam
The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PTC) advises the public that a smishing scam is being attempted. The scam aims to deceive people so they will share their personal financial information to settle outstanding toll amounts.
The texts purport to be from Pennsylvania Turnpike Toll Services and center around urgent requests to settle unpaid tolls; the texts claim that the recipient will be charged an additional
amount if an overdue balance is not paid. Similar scams have recently been reported by toll agencies across the country.
People who receive an unsolicited text, email, or similar message suggesting it is from the PTC or another toll agency should not click on the link.
E-ZPass account holders and Toll By Plate customers can use approved safe methods to check their accounts such as the official PTC E-ZPass website
or the PA Toll Pay app available from the Apple App Store or the Google Play store.
Those who receive a fraudulent text may file a complaint with the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center at www.ic3.gov. The site is dedicated to sharing information on internet crimes across law enforcement agencies.

and Coffee event, which is open to all makes and models of cars and trucks. Breakfast and coffee vendors will be featured. There will also be a display of American Motors vehicles.
According to a history of the Studebakers, members of the Studebaker family came to South Bend, Ind., from Germany in 1736. At first, the company built horsedrawn farm wagons. Studebaker entered the automotive business in 1902. In addition to the original South Bend vehicle plants, separate buildings were added through the years, including a plant in Detroit and one in Canada.
“Studebaker has deep roots in Lancaster County. The mother of the five Studebaker brothers, two of which started the wagon and automobile business, was Rebecca Mohler of the Mohler Church congregation (in Ephrata),” Sinclair noted.
After an unsuccessful attempt to merge with Packard in 1954, the South Bend plant stopped producing automobiles in December of 1963. The company decided to concentrate production in its small assembly plant in Canada. “The last Studebaker was built in 1966 in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada,” Sinclair added.
He noted that the Studebaker is an international favorite with many collectors. “The club has over 10,000 members worldwide. Our
Garden Spot Fire Rescue Community Blood Drive
local chapter is basically central Pennsylvania, and we have roughly 225 members,” said Sinclair. “Our club meets monthly at different locations. We just held our national convention last month in Dubuque, Iowa.”
“We have been nicknamed the action chapter because we have more events and we are the drivers’ club, so we try to encourage (people to drive their Studebakers),” he added.

One of the Studebakers in Sinclair’s collection is a blue 1962 Champ. “I have been driving (Studebakers) since I was 16. I am a life member of the club,” he said. “The engine in my (1962) truck was in my first car when I was 16. My truck when it was new was shipped from Modesta, California, which is the hometown of George Lucas.” The Classic Auto Mall and the Holiday Inn are located at 6180 Morgantown Road, Morgantown. Oberholtzer will give a talk on his book, which focuses on the burial shroud of Jesus. Oberholtzer will also sign copies of his book. The book is being critiqued by one of the original shroud committee members, who lives in the United Kingdom, and it was previously critiqued by former state Rep. Thomas Armstrong. following God’s lead, but they did not know specifically where. “We felt God wanted us to do something with kids, (but) we weren’t sure what that would be,” said Jeremy. The couple pitched the idea of a sports camp to HMS administration and, with the school’s blessing, went to bat. “We were hoping for 25 to 30 kids, and we got 85 the first year,” recalled Jeremy, who noted that school administration has remained positive about the camp, and HMS teachers have gotten involved as well.
Jeremy believes offering a variety of sports disciplines at camp is a healthy alternative to sports-specific camps. “We see more and more specialization as kids choose a sport, and that’s all they do,” he said. “We purposely have them try four different sports
so one day they might be an expert, and another day they might be learning.” Team devotions, group games, and worship are also part of the camp curriculum. “It’s a sports camp, but for kids who just want to be active,” Jeremy said. “We get kids with a variety of interests, and we like it that way.”
