New Holland Fair To Return BY ANN MEAD ASH
ristie Overly, who handles premiums for the New Holland Fair exhibits, is happy to be looking ahead to the 89th annual Farmers Fair after the 2020 event had to be canceled. “We are really glad to be back, and we are looking forward to large, safe crowds,” said Overly, who noted that the best part of her work with the fair is seeing children and others earn prizes. “When the kids work on something - a craft, Legos model, or raising an animal - and they bring it to the fair … (and) when they get a prize, it is so rewarding for us to see,” she shared. The 2021 New Holland Farmers Day Association Fair will be held from Wednesday, Sept. 29, through Saturday, Oct. 2, on Main Street, Roberts Avenue, Franklin Street, and Fulton Street. The fair will kick off on Sept. 29 with the parade, which will begin at 7 p.m. The Spectacle of Bands competition, which is part of the parade, will be held,

Woodcrest Creates Raven’s Roost BY ANN MEAD ASH
The new Raven’s Roost wooden playground, which opened Sept. 18 in the upper playground at Woodcrest Retreat, rises high into the trees. In fact, a few of the trees are encompassed by the platforms of the structure. “We had talked about a treehouse,” said Jason Martin, operations director for the camp and conference center. “It’s the feel of a treehouse without being a treehouse. It’s not using any trees to support it, but trees are in the midst of it.”

Neighbors Caring and Sharing, which meets weekly at Conestoga Mennonite Church in Morgantown, is now it is 35th year of offering programming for local women. The first meeting of the Christian women’s group for 2021-22 was held on Sept. 21 and featured a welcome back brunch. Meetings See Conestoga Mennonite pg 3
INSIDE THIS ISSUE
New Playground Opens At Camp Raven’s Roost was made possible when a proposed Woodcrest project was canceled and a donor graciously allowed the funds to be transferred to create a new playground instead. In the fall of 2020, Martin and other staff members brainstormed ways to expand the playground, which is located adjacent to the pool. “We put our heads together as a staff and came up with detailed points for what we were looking for,” explained Martin, who then utilized his background in construction and design in drawing up the plans for Raven’s Roost.

books; gardening, hobbies, crafts and nature; health, self-help and family books; memoirs; and books of local, Amish, and Mennonite interest. Music CDs, puzzles, and several miscellaneous or collectible books will also be offered. All books will be sold at half price on Saturday. On Aug. 28, Serrano’s Barber Lounge, 127 E. Main St., New Holland, offered free back-to-school haircuts for children on a walk-in basis. The event was sponsored by FilterShine Northeast.
Serrano’s owner Ramone “Rome” Serrano shared that the reason for holding the event was personal to him. When he and his brother were growing up, he said, they went without backpacks and haircuts; now, he wanted to
do something to help children start the school year on a high note. “No kids in my community should go without,” he said. During the event, four barbers offered 60 free haircuts at Serrano’s. Additionally, 96
hot dogs and 42 backpacks were given away. Serrano’s has been offering this event for several years but was unable to hold it in 2020 due to the shutdown. Rome plans to continue it every year.

Neighbors Caring and Sharing include Sue Sutter, Ronda Brubacher, Blair Petersheim, Norma Denlinger and Tina Essick, program chair. Essick noted that one of the most popular Neighbors programs is “My Favorite Things,” during which attendees bring three different things valued under $5 each to share with the other members. This year’s “My Favorite Things” meeting will be on Oct. 12. “Last year, I brought a book I enjoy to share. Someone brought chocolate chip cookies with a recipe,” Essick said. “It may be a favorite cake that your family loves with a recipe or your favorite plant, nail polish or ChapStick.” New speakers this year will include Erica Kanter, who will talk about Anchored Ministries of Elverson on Oct. 5, and Marian Gehman, who will share her personal testimony on Jan. 18, 2022, in a program titled, “The Dust of Progress: Laughter and Life Lessons While Under Construction.” “(She will talk about) dealing with challenges in your life,” noted Essick.

New Holland Fair from pg 1 from high school bands that travel to take part. “It’s late (when the parade is over) for high school kids that come from a great distance,” explained Redding, who will intersperse high school bands with floats and other participants in the first half of the parade. Both Redding and Overly noted a need for volunteers for the event. “A significant number of our volunteers are in a more vulnerable population, so we are hoping to attract new volunteers,” said Overly, who added that many area residents have expressed interest in keeping the event going. Volunteers who put in a specified number of hours will be invited to a banquet, which will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 16, at Yoder’s. Rules and entry forms for exhibits may be found in the New Holland Fair Premium Book, which can be picked up at Yoder’s Country Market, Stauffer’s Drug Store, or the Tannery Antiques store. Ride tickets may be purchased at those locations and through Boy Scouts New Holland Troop 48, the New Holland Church of the Nazarene, Cavod, and Radio Shack. In addition, all entry information may be found at www.newhollandfair.org on the “Contests and Events” page.

The fair will also feature a midway, exhibits in a range of categories, a long john eating contest, a horseshoe pitching contest, a pedal power contest for children, pet and baby parades, games, and a variety of food vendors. The animal competitions will be held in the tents on Fulton Street. Swine will be judged on Tuesday, Sept. 28, at 5:30 p.m. Goats will be judged at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 30, and sheep will be judged the same day at 4 p.m. The competition is open to 4-H and FFA members from Lancaster County. Safety will be a priority for this year’s Farmers Fair. “We want to encourage people to be respectful of others’ space,” said fair president Paulene Redding. Overly added that the number of sanitation stations available at the fair will be increased. She also requested that those bringing exhibits to the New Holland Farmers Day Association building, located at 101 W. Franklin St., New Holland, do so between 2 and 5 p.m. on Sept. 28 to help avoid crowding. Redding has been handling the parade for five years. This year, she is changing up the lineup based on requests

“Who am I?” might be one of life’s biggest questions. Some people believe that getting to know themselves requires discovering their roots because knowing their history and culture helps them construct their individual identities. It can also enable them to build a sense of pride. One of the early advocates for a Mennonite historical society in Lancaster County was pastor and farmer Ira D. Landis. The first meeting of the Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society was held in
May 1958. Eleven years later, the society purchased the Hans Herr House. Built in 1719 by Christian and Anna Herr, the Herr House is not only the oldest surviving house in Lancaster County, but it is also known as the oldest original Mennonite meeting house in the Western Hemisphere. Restoration and archaeological excavation on the house began in 1971, and the site was officially opened to the public in 1974. Since the 1990s, the Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society has hosted an annual Maize and Snitz Festival at

A large climbing web made of ropes provides added fun and an interesting design element. Martin stated that the web existed as part of the playground prior to the construction of Raven’s Roost. “We designed the structure around it, and now it’s an access point to get up to the platform,” he said. According to Martin, construction on the project began in March, with volunteer laborers, mostly retired men who had worked in construction, at the site on Monday and Wednesday mornings. “Having no designated

Adding to the playground to improve on existing offerings is part of the mission of Woodcrest. “We are always looking for (things that will influence) kids to want to come back to camp,” said Martin. “We wanted to beef up this playground because of how much it gets used,” he added. “ We wanted something they could climb up and around (on).” More information about Woodcrest may be found at www.woodcrestretreat.org.

At the market fair, Drew Shuptar-Rayvis will speak about the relationships between early European immigrants and indigenous peoples, and Mark A. Turdo will discuss the history of cider and his experiments in re-creating 18th-century recipes. “The story of the Herrs and the other families who came over with them is totally relevant to early American history and what historians refer to as the Atlantic world and global economy that existed in the 18th century,” said Tiffany Fisk, 1719 Herr House & Museum administrator. “This is important for everyone, not just one set of people.” The 1719 Herr House & Museum is open Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Field trips can be scheduled on Thursdays by contacting Fisk at 717-464-4438 or museum@lmhs.org. the Herr House & Museum. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, staff at the museum were able to take a year and a half to redefine the 2021 Maize and Snitz Market Fair. The idea for the upcoming event is to offer attendees a more complete understanding of what Colonial life would have been like for the Herr family. “This is part of the Herr family’s story, but this is also part of the story that related to hundreds if not thousands of people when they came to America,” explained Jason Stetler, digital and communications storyteller for the Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society. The Maize and Snitz Market Fair will take place on Saturday, Oct. 2, on the historic grounds of the 1719 Herr House & Museum, 1849 Hans Herr Drive, Willow Street. Attendees will have the chance to immerse themselves in the cultures of early European and indigenous people of Lancaster County. For the first time, the rain-orshine event will feature artisans who specialize in 18thcentury trades. Professional tradespeople will demonstrate embroidery, tape weaving, baking, hearth cooking,

David Deck spends a lot of time turning things over. At antique stores or flea markets, the Manheim resident can be found picking up objects and looking at what’s marked on the bottom. He’s searching for the words “Made in Occupied Japan.” David is a member of The Upside-Down World of Occupied Japan (OJ), a nationwide club of collectors that will be convening in Manheim later this month. After a members-only meeting, the club will host an event that’s open to the public on Saturday, Sept. 25, beginning at 11 a.m. at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1258 Newport Road, Penryn. David estimates that more than 1,000 items from 40 club members will be for sale at the event. “We’ll also do appraisals on site if people want to bring their items,” he noted. In a small building off Route 72 in Manheim, David has amassed an impressive collection of OJ items. Shelves are filled with dishes, tea sets, plates, banks, figurines, toys, lamps and more. Each item bears a sticker, stamp, engraving or embossment that identifies it as Made in Occupied Japan. As David explained, U.S. forces stayed in Japan from 1945 to 1952, with the goal of helping the Japanese rebuild after World War II. “From 1947 to 1952, General MacArthur declared that anything exported from Japan was to be marked ‘Made in Occupied Japan,’” he stated. “It was marked that way so the American people would know it and would buy it to help the Japanese people get back on their feet.”
David, who has been collecting the items for about 25 years, will host the Manheim meeting with his brother, Gary. “Getting together with the club is a lot of fun,” he stated. “We sit and tell stories and get to know each other, since many of us have only met through Facebook.” The brothers have traveled across the country for annual club meetings, including to Nashville, where last year’s meeting was held. The OJ club has existed for more than 40 years and is currently run by Shoko Tanaka, who lives in California, and Kathy Gardner, who resides in Indiana.

Gonzalez Records Hat Trick in Win over McCaskey
BY ARA GRIGORIAN
The Garden Spot girls’ soccer team notched its first win of the season as Ashton Gonzalez recorded a hat trick on Monday, September 13. “She scored three first-half goals,” head coach Kyle Smith explained. “We were down 1-0 and scored three straight goals. We missed a couple of opportunities to extend the lead. It was a pretty good game.” The Spartans (1-3-0) defeated McCaskey 3-2 in the LancasterLebanon League match. It was a far better result than the two previous games in which the Spartans offense was not able to finish on some opportunities. Elizabethtown shut out Garden Spot 4-0 on Thursday, September 9. Jena Witters scored all four goals for the Bears - two in each half. “We came up kind of slow,” Smith stated. “They scored a couple of their goals off our mistakes. We couldn’t get anything going.” Two days later, the Spartans suffered a 3-0 loss to Solanco - a game that the Spartan coach claimed was not as one-sided as the score indicated. “We gave up a couple of weak goals,” Smith said. “The 3-0 didn’t reflect how we played. We were passing the ball around.” Garden Spot came up short by the same margin two days following their defeat of McCaskey. On Wednesday, September 15, Emily Weidner scored two of her team’s three goals as Ephrata blanked Gar-
den Spot 3-0, dropping the Spartans to 1-4-0. Avery Bitner assisted on all three goals. “Our goal is to work our way up from the back to the front,” Smith added. “Keeping possession to the final third - that’s the key. “We just need a couple more games where the score is closer where it isn’t 3-0,” continued the coach. “And we can turn things around.” FIELD HOCKEY Lauren Horning’s overtime goal on Tuesday night, September 14, gave Garden Spot a 1-0 victory over Elco at New Holland, improving the Spartans to 2-0-0 in the L-L League (4-1-0 overall). “We had a couple of corners and a foul occurred within the circle,” explained head coach Katy Eby. “They awarded us a penalty corner and Lauren was able to get off a great shot inside the far post.” Bryna Kelly and Amanda Hoover each collected three saves in the shutout win as the Spartans outshot the Raiders 9-6 “The girls were excited and knew they had to battle to the end,” Eby added. “We knew, going into this game, that Elco was a great team. We knew it would be a tight game.” Playing five games in a span of eight days, the Spartans’ lone defeat was a 3-1 non-league loss to Lancaster Mennonite the night prior to the Elco match. On Saturday, September 11, they topped Lebanon 2-0 in another Section Three match with Horning and Melanie Esh each netting one goal while Kelly and Hoover each
grabbed two saves. BOYS’ SOCCER Garden Spot suffered a tough 1-0 loss to Ephrata on Wednesday, September 15. The Spartans were coming off a 41 loss to McCaskey two nights earlier and a 3-1 loss at Reading in a nonleague game Saturday, September 11. CROSS COUNTRY The Garden Spot boys triumphed over Cocalico, Lancaster Catholic and Northern Lebanon in a Section Two cross country race on Tuesday, September 14. The Spartans (4-1) raced past Cocalico 16-41, nipped Northern Lebanon 25-30 and clipped Catholic 27-28. Josiah Martin’s thirdplace time of 18:56 paced the Spartans. Alan Krock took fifth with a time of 18:56. At 77, David continues to add to his collection and said he expects his youngest son to one day acquire his treasures. Until then, he’s always on the hunt for more. “It’s an affordable hobby,” he remarked. “I love finding different items. You have to look at each one and see if the piece is marked. That’s the fun of it.” For more information on the Occupied Japan club get-together, visit https:// tinyurl.com/826wkcut. Contact David about buying or selling items at 717-203-3657.

Friends In Action International (FIA), a nonprofit organization located in Middletown, recently received a fourstar rating from Charity Navigator, an independent charity evaluator. Only a quarter of the 1.5 million charities rated have achieved this status. In 2022, Friends In Action will celebrate its 30th year of “supporting mission work in areas of limited infrastructure by using construction projects and practical service to speed the Gospel to those who have never heard.” “Friends In Action is committed to stretching each dollar and prayer invested to do the most good, for the greatest number of people, to the highest glory of God,” said Tim Johnston, FIA’s executive director. “We owe this to our supporters and funders and are happy to be honored by Charity Navigator.” The four-star rating is the highest rating offered by Charity Navigator and verifies that FIA demonstrates strong financial health and a commitment to accountability and transparency. A detailed review of financial documents, such as the organization’s Form 990 and audited financials, as well as key policies indicated that FIA adheres to sector best practices and executes its mission in a financially efficient way. FIA has also achieved GuideStar.org’s Platinum Rating, the site’s highest rating, for integrity and GreatNonProfit.org’s badge as a 2021 top-rated nonprofit. Readers who would like to learn more about Friends In Action can participate in the FIA Mission Banquet to raise awareness and funds for Christian mission outreaches. This year’s WIT Awards wrapped up a two-part virtual celebration of the fifth anniversary of TCCP’s continued commitment to celebrating women who are innovators, role models, trailblazers and inspirations within the technology community throughout the region. Opening remarks were offered by Ann Hughes, president and CEO of TCCP. Mary-Angela Kenney won this year’s WIT Impact Award Private Sector/Medium to Large Business.
