Spot Booters Fall to Barons, Top Bears

BY ARA GRIGORIAN

The Garden Spot boys’ soccer team opened the week with a Section Two match at Manheim Central. The Spartans took a 1-1 score into halftime with Thomas Andress scoring the equalizer in the 32nd minute off a Jordan Martin assist.

The Barons’ Connor Caterbone scored 14 minutes into the second half to give the home team a 2-1 edge, which held up as the margin of victory.

“It was a back-and-forth game,” said first year head coach Ken Herr. “We’ve been good at scoring off set pieces, which was how we scored the equalizer. They scored off a corner kick.”

Nate Reed gave Central a 1-0 lead 17 minutes into the match. Garden Spot junior goalie Samuel Armbruster registered six saves as the team fell to 0-1-1.

Garden Spot hosted Elizabethtown in another LancasterLebanon League game on Wednesday, winning 3-0.

Herr was asked about the importance of getting that first win after a close loss.

“It felt great,” he replied. “We had played two Section One teams in scrimmages with a win and a tie. So we started the season with confidence.”

On a corner kick 38 minutes into the match Martin put Spot ahead 1-0.

“It was deflected and it came back to him,” Herr explained. “He kept his composure, as a senior should, and did what he was supposed to do.”

Late in the second half, George Rohrbaugh doubled the lead thanks to continued pressure on the E-town goalie.

“He missed on his clearance attempt,” Herr explained. “George, who had put a lot of pressure on the keeper, was able to capitalize.”

Gage Bills added a third goal on a penalty kick with 30 seconds to play. Armbruster registered a shutout.

“Our defense is something really special,” Herr said. “We nominate a ‘man of the match’ and in our first three matches they’ve all been defenders.”

Martin is the defensive midfielder. The back four are Jack Bruggerman, Nick Gleanson, Max Leininger and Chris Wehn. GIRLS’ SOCCER

The girls’ match on Monday was an overtime heartbreaker with Central’s Hannah Adair scoring her second goal of the game in the 96th minute. Goalie Lindsey Watkins had seven saves in the match.

Trailing 1-0, the Spartans evened the score in the 67th minute on Taylor Soehner’s goal off an assist by senior Britney Esh.

Soehner had the lone goal in Wednesday’s loss to Elizabethtown. Ahead 1-0 at the half, Etown scored six times in the second half for a 7-1 win. The Spartans fell to 0-4 (0-3 league).

The Garden Spot girls raced Section Two foes Columbia and Annville-Cleona at Columbia on Monday. The Dutchmen, by taking the top two overall places, won the race, slipping past Spot 25-30. Garden Spot and A-C both dominated Columbia 15-50.

Deborah’s Circle Forms At Temple Shaarai Shomayim

BY ANN MEAD ASH

About three years ago, Rosanne Selfon, former president of the international Women of Reformed Judaism, wanted to see a group of women at Temple Shaarai Shomayim take part in a pilot program of women helping women. While that program did not quite take off, Selfon was not ready to give up, and that determination resulted in significant contributions to two local nonprofit organizations.

“About 18 months ago, we decided to try it again,” said Selfon, who co-chaired the group with Gail Sterman of Willow Valley Communities. “We started to talk,” said Selfon, who noted that Sterman was newly arrived from Jacksonville, Fla., at the time. “(Sterman) was very familiar with women’s collective giving. She had experience with it.”

The two began to brainstorm. “We started thinking about what we had to do to make it work … and we laid out a plan,” said Selfon. Part of that plan was to make the group affordable. “We wanted to try to build this up within the temple community,” explained Selfon, who noted that Temple Shaarai Shomayim Rabbi Jack Paskoff puts an emphasis on charity and good deeds. “We do a lot of that, but we thought this would be something women specifically could get involved in,” Selfon said.

According to Selfon, women’s philanthropy is growing by leaps and bounds, and she and Sterman saw that it was time for women in Lancaster to join the movement. “We wanted our women to come to understand the ability they have with their own money to give and make decisions about how that money is given,” she said. “They can determine to whom it is given and for what.”

A small group began meeting in the fall of 2019, giving themselves the name Deborah’s Circle. “We liked Deborah because she was smart and strategic - a general and a judge,” said Selfon of the character from the Torah. She added that the concept of a circle was added because life revolves in a never-ending circle. The group’s mission is to provide financial grants to nonprofit organizations serving women and/or children in Lancaster County. “We wanted to keep it local and have it be about women or women and children,” Selfon said.

The group that started with about six women around a table eventually grew to 17. Then, everything changed. “COVID came,” recalled Selfon, who noted that after that the group met via computer, determined to continue what they had started. A steering committee comprised of Selfon, Sterman, Robin Adler, Linda Hirsch, Nancy Kurland, Risa Paskoff, and Joan Sherman formed, and Deborah’s Circle kept meeting virtually. “We needed to determine more about who we were and what we were going to be,” said Selfon, who noted that

Members of Deborah’s Circle met electronically to present funds to two area organizations that help women and children.

the group set member contributions at $10 per month or $120 a year.

In the throes of COVID-19 restrictions, the group had amassed about $2,000. “Originally, we were going to investigate some agencies and ask leaders to come and talk to us about needs,” said Selfon, who noted that COVID-19 restrictions stymied that plan. At first, the group was going to wait to distribute funds, but realizing that the needs local organizations were meeting were increasing, they decided to act. “We called for an (online) meeting of the steering committee, and we agreed to give some of the funds away to organizations that had pressing needs.” The group ultimately gave $750 each to Milagro House and the Lancaster County Food Hub. “The bottom line is that I would not have written a check for $750 to either one of them (by myself)” said Selfon, who noted what a delight it was to see the faces of the group members when the organizations were told about the funds they would receive. “We were all awestruck that 17 of us could do this, and we felt it made a big impact for the two organizations we gave money to.”

With the group formed and distributing funds, members are now looking to expand. “Women at other temples are being asked to join,” said Selfon. Selfon hopes to grow the group to about 40 or more members to make an even bigger impact. She pointed out that members need not be of the Jewish faith. “We say a prayer at the beginning of the meeting, but the rest of it is about doing good,” she said. “It’s about women working together to make the world as good as it can be.”

Local Author Debuts “Fruit Fables” Grief Support Group To Meet

BY ANN MEAD ASH

On her website, Shelleen Weaver describes herself as an author, speaker, singer, songwriter, wife, mother, friend, and daughter. She is also a New Holland resident and one who loves the Word of God.

On Saturday, Oct. 10, at 10 a.m., Weaver will launch the first installment of her children’s series “Fruit Fables,” published by her own Haste Laud Press, the company she founded to help her share the stories she was telling her own children. “Love Bird,” recommended for children ages 4 to 8, will be the first book of nine based on the biblical Fruits of the Spirit. It tells the tale of a squirrel family that notices a new neighbor above their home in the oak tree. When they go to introduce themselves, the neighbor, who is a bird, rudely chatters right back at them. During the night, the family hears the bird offending all its neighbors. Quickly, a meeting is called, and the animals decide to only speak kind words to the offensive bird, causing him to return kind words back to them. “When you choose to love this way, you may see it returned to you,” said Weaver, who added, “(The book is) teaching that love is sometimes a choice you will yourself to carry out. It’s an action, and it’s hard work.”

Weaver explained that the stories are meant to teach. “Because I am a mom, the moral of the story is ... if I am going to work to be creative like that, you’re going to get a lesson,” she said. Each book will end with a section called “Let’s Chew on It.” In “Love Bird,” that section includes seven questions, such as “How would you feel if someone was

rude to you?” and “The next time someone is unkind to you, how could you respond?” The book also includes a Bible verse, a short prayer, and a theme song.

The “Fruit Fables” series was written with encouragement from Weaver’s brother, who overheard her telling her then 3-year-old son Tyler a bedtime story. Some time later when she was caring for a nephew who had cancer, she found herself exhausted, but struggling to sleep. “I couldn’t turn my head off,” recalled Weaver, who began writing stories to help herself calm down.

After her nephew passed away, Weaver looked over the stories she had written. “They were all using animals to unpack a lesson,” she said, adding that she realized she had the makings of a series on the Fruits of the Spirit. Around the same time, she began talking to other local writers, and she attended a 2015 Christian writers’ conference in Hershey. Following the conference, she took a year to work on other projects, but in 2016, she returned to pitch the books for publication. Although Weaver had interest from a publisher, she ultimately decided to publish through her own company, which she named Haste Laud based on the words in the song “What Child Is This?” “Jesus said, ‘If I am lifted up, I will draw men unto Me,’” explained Weaver. “That’s our job. The whole point is to bring Him glory, and He will do work in people’s hearts.”

To illustrate the book, Weaver turned to a childhood friend she knew was a capable artist. “I met my illustrator at church camp when I was 11,” recalled Weaver. “I hired him See Tales pg 16

16 - PENNYSAVER - Garden Spot Edition - October 7, 2020 Tales from pg 15 not seeing anything he had done since middle school.” Cody Wood is known as an animation artist, and he has been featured on Cartoon Network, but he switched hats for his first book illustration, winning Weaver’s praise. Weaver plans to feature herself and Wood on her website, where they will read the book together, talk about the questions, and even sing the song. “Isn’t that fun?” Weaver asked. “People can meet the author and the illustrator on the site.” Weaver agreed that the appeal of the book is broader than the Christian market and that the lesson of kindness is especially timely. “We learn through stories,” she said. “We are opened to truth through stories.” More information about “Fruit Fables” is available under “Books” at www .shelleenweaver.com.
