Want To Really Help Alleviate Hunger? BY ANN MEAD ASH
aybe it shows up on your Facebook page … or maybe it arrives in an email. The infographic purports to tell you why certain items are or are not good choices to donate to your local food pantry. Suggestions include donating boxed milk, a can opener, oil, and fresh produce and meat. At this point, you’re thinking, “Wow, I never thought of those things,” and if you have been donating soup and pasta and peanut butter, you feel like maybe you have not been doing your part. The Pennysaver contacted Amy Marburger, food and nutrition manager with CrossNet Ministries, to find out which donations are most helpful to the ELANCO community. Marburger noted immediately that while donations have been consistent, as fall turns into winter, less fresh local produce will be available, and inflation may take a toll. “ We are thinking ahead because the holidays are coming, and we are starting to see a slight increase in weekly numbers,” she

said. “We hope we don’t see a drastic decrease in food donations.” To help alleviate that problem, Marburger suggests that those wishing to donate purchase two of an item they are buying anyway and give the second to CrossNet.
“We are thinking ahead because the holidays are coming, and we are starting to see a slight increase in weekly numbers.” Marburger perused the infographic about ways to truly benefit a local food pantry and noted that she would be glad to accept can openers and that she often gives them to families that are homeless. She said pop-top cans are also appreciated. While the pantry offers milk, butter, and margarine weekly, Marburger said that boxed milk - powdered or liquid - is great for recipients to keep in their kitchens for cooking needs. She added that oil, spices, salt, pepper, sugar, and flour are hugely popular among those who utilize the pantry.

Imagine four children ranging in age from kindergarten to third grade so enraptured by an hourlong presentation that they are surprised when it is over. What could grab and hold their attention? Why, music, of course, but not just any music. The four children were in a SWAN (Scaling Walls A Note at a Time) after-school class at See SWAN pg 6

Lei Williams with a Huey helicopter similar to the one that she took to escape Vietnam in 1975
On Sept. 13, Garden Spot High School English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher Lei Williams stepped up to a microphone located in a hangar at Lancaster Airport and told the veterans, dignitaries, and others who had gathered for the 100th anniversary celebration of the First Cavalry Division how she left Vietnam in a Huey helicopter in 1975, when she was only 5. Williams began by sharing details of her early life in Saigon, where her mother was the daughter of peasant
farmers, and her father was a retired Air Force pilot working for Air America. Williams and her younger sister grew up visiting the park, playing with other children, and attending preschool. In early 1975, Williams’ father died. Shortly thereafter, Viet Cong troops began to approach Saigon. Williams’ mother knew she needed to get her family to safety. She dressed her Amerasian daughters in their best clothing, pinning money and basic information about the girls inside. On April 29, she took them to an evacuation site where

Pasta is commonly donated, and Marburger noted, “Noodles are super important, but think outside spaghetti.” She listed lasagna, penne, elbows, and egg noodles among the items that fly off the shelves. During the summer and fall, the pantry is well supplied with local produce. During the cooler months, Marburger appreciates donations of produce, including celery, broccoli, cauliflower, apples, pears, and bananas on Mondays or Tuesdays so they will be fresh when recipients come to the pantry on Wednesdays. Other items that are always appreciated include snack crackers, saltines, cake mixes and frosting, hearty canned soups that are rich in vegetables and beef; jarred gravies; beef, chicken, and vegetable broths; salsa; pickles; and condiments of all kinds. Nonfood items in high demand include laundry and dishwashing detergent and feminine hygiene products. More information about CrossNet Ministries may be found at http://elancocross.org.

A former teacher with a strong interest in history as well as music, Dodd has become a Pennsylvanian troubadour, offering music and history programs featuring different American themes and historical periods. The program will take place in the Eicher House, which originated as the Eicher farmhouse building in the 1730s. To save the Eicher House and the smaller Eicher Sisters House nearby from demoli-

Dodd’s program is the final program on the Eicher Arts Center’s 2021 schedule of cultural and entertainment events for the public. Admission to the Nov. 14 program is free. Donations to the Arts Center will be accepted. The Arts Center urges audience members to bring masks to wear at the event.

Walker Martin went 7-for-7 with extra point attempts. for more photos see www.townlively.com FIELD HOCKEY Garden Spot and Fleetwood had both made it past the opening round of the District Three Class AA field hockey playoffs with 1-0 victories against their respective opponents. The seventhseeded Spartans edged No. 10 seed Donegal on Lauren Horning’s overtime goal back on October 27 while the Tigers - the No. six seed had shaded New Oxford. The quarterfinals delivered the same result for both teams - Fleetwood lost 5-0 to three seed Northern, who improved to 18-2, while Garden Spot (14-6) fell to secondseeded Twin Valley by the same margin. The Spartans charged back with two fourth-quarter goals on Wednesday night to tie the consolation match 3-3 after regulation. Given that the top seven seeds in District Three would qualify for the PIAA state playoffs, the Spartans looked to secure a victory. The Tigers, however, scored the golden goal with 3:56 left in the first overtime period,
resulting in Garden Spot having to play Susquehannock in the seventh-place game. Fleetwood pulled ahead 31 after three quarters with the lone Garden Spot goal coming off the stick of Elisabeth Kauffman (Erin Gonza-
lez assist). It came in the third quarter as the Spartans went into intermission trailing 2-0. Melanie Esh and Emma Swatski helped the Spartan even the score in the fourth quarter.

Wickersham Elementary, and the presentation was made by Lancaster Symphony Orchestra (LSO) concertmaster Luigi Mazzocchi and assistant concertmaster Nina Zubadi. The pair performed a Leclair sonata for two violins. Following the performance, the musicians spent time talking to the students and answering questions. SWAN founder and executive director Diana Vuolo noted that the students were “lost in learning.” “They had an engaging conversation. It was stimulating, instructive, and inspiring,” said Vuolo. “Experiencing music live has an impact emotionally. It was a really upbeat and happy time.” The presentation came
about through a partnership between LSO and SWAN, with the visit being part of LSO’s Stand Partner Community Program, in which LSO makes a concerted effort to serve the community. SWAN is a free one-hour music program provided to School District of Lancaster (SDoL) students ages 6 to 18. The organization currently offers music lessons through several SDoL schools and at the Youth Intervention Center (YIC). SWAN is a nonprofit organization specifically serving children affected by parental incarceration. Since the children play ukuleles, it was natural for them to compare their instruments with the musicians’ violins. “(The students) saw

that the violin has two holes to let the sound out and that both (instruments) have bridges, but they are different in shape and size. Both have four strings and a similarshaped body,” shared Vuolo. “They were describing the instruments with good adjectives, and they created good conversation.” The visiting musicians then gave the students an opportunity to play with them. “One of the most magical moments was when the symphony musicians had our children start plucking two notes repeatedly (on their ukuleles), and then the musicians started to play a folk dance,” said Vuolo. “They really did sound beautiful together.” Vuolo is especially looking forward to a return visit by Mazzocchi and Zubadi. “(LSO) will be sending the same musicians to the same classes multiple times throughout the year,” she explained, “so the school children will be able to create a relationship with them.” On Friday, Nov. 19, SWAN will take part in the Extraordinary Give (ExtraGive), hosted by the Lancaster County Community Foundation (LCCF). The 24-hour event, which is the the largest percapita giving day in the nation, will begin at 12:00:01 a.m. on Nov. 19. Individuals may make donations using a credit card to participating nonprofits at www.extra give.org. Readers who would like to learn more about SWAN may visit http://www.swan4kids.org.

Sandra Jones and Paul Zenone’s first date in May of 2019 was a little unusual. “Our first date was a community meal,” recalled Zenone. The second date was even more unusual. “Our second date was a hike where we saw people living in homeless camps and under bridges,” he noted. From that beginning, Jones and Zenone have created Providing Hope, an organization that provides clothing and
food to the homeless in the Reading area on a weekly basis, with the help of about 20 volunteers. Zenone and Jones first connected when Jones, who grew up in the Donegal area, saw an ad on Craigslist seeking donations for homeless people in Reading. She reached out to Zenone, who had placed the ad, and the pair began serving the homeless community together. On Sept. 17, 2020, Providing Hope celebrated its second anniversary as an organization.

Providing Hope holds a food distribution on Court Street in Reading each Sunday starting at 3:30 p.m. The giveaway includes 15 food items. On Mondays, Providing Hope makes a snack bag run through the city with regular stops. To help homeless Reading residents to know where they can shower or do laundry, Providing Hope has created a flyer in English and Spanish that lists days of the week and locations of services. Now, the couple hopes to provide similar help in Lancaster County, where Jones, who works with autistic children, is already storing some of the clothing bank items she has collected. “At our house we have bins for male and female winter and summer shirts from small to extra-large,” said Jones. “I store plus sizes and kids’ clothes at my parents’ house in Lancaster.” Zenone, who owns a flooring business, added that Reading-area nonprofits now reach out to Providing Hope when they need clothing for a client. Both Jones and Zenone welcome donations of food and clothing and volunteers. Readers who would like to know more about the organization or would like to indicate interest in helping it expand into Lancaster may search for “Providing Hope” on Facebook.

Girls on the Run (GOTR) of Lancaster and Lebanon recently announced Kathryn Sandoe, D.Ed., as its new executive director. Sandoe began her journey as executive director on Sept. 1 and followed Carrie Johnson, who brought GOTR to Lancaster as the founder and executive director 12 years ago. Sandoe has been on the board of directors and served on many committees for over seven years. She most recently served as board chair. As GOTR builds upon participation rates this fall by recruiting over 400 girls and 150 volunteer coaches, Sandoe will also use her experience and strengths to
Freedom from pg 1 she was able to pass them over a fence into the arms of an American. A Viet Cong soldier stopped her from following. Williams and her sister were taken to the rooftop, where a helicopter waited. “I can still hear the sound of the helicopter blades as the big machine lifted off the building and the people below me disappeared,” recalled Williams. “The tears started to fall as I began to cry, and I clung to my sister, who was 3, not knowing what would happen to us.” The helicopter landed on a United States ship waiting in the China Sea. Saigon fell into the hands of the Viet Cong on April 30, but by then, Williams and her sister were on their way to America, where they were placed in a refugee camp at Camp Chaffee in Arkansas. By the fall of 1975, Williams and her sister had both been adopted by a family in Nebraska, and she began attending a small public school, where she was the only student who spoke a different language. With no ESL programs, her initial transition was difficult, but she

Sandoe was most recently the head of communication and public affairs at LCSWMA. She also owns a coaching and consulting business and teaches at Penn State Harrisburg. She serves as a board member for the YWCA Lancaster and is on the board of trustees for the Lancaster Chamber, among others. When Williams was 9 years old, she became a naturalized citizen. She attended college, working to earn a teaching degree. At that time, she began to think about how she might return to Vietnam and be reunited with her mother. As conditions in Vietnam stabilized, she made contact, and in 1998, she was able to visit her mother. “We are both so thankful for the time we’ve shared even though our lives are vastly different and a massive ocean separates us,” Williams noted. Williams ended her talk by expressing gratitude for her life in America and for the men and women who served to provide her with the freedoms she enjoys here. “I humbly and deeply thank you for your service,” she said to the veterans in attendance at the First Cavalry event. “Your sacrifice changed the trajectory of this girl’s life, and I hope I have made you proud.”
