Historical society to present annual Arts & Crafts Fair
BY FRANCINE FULTON
“When you see ‘arts and crafts fair,’ you think of a few people setting up and selling their goods. But it’s a lot more that,” said Middletown Historical Society member Mike Dalton, event organizer, when describing the Middletown Arts & Crafts Fair. “We are always trying to think of something new to make it unique. We have something for everyone.”
This 48th annual Middletown Arts & Crafts Fair will take place on Saturday, June 10, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Hoffer Park, 325 Mill St., Middletown. The fair, which will be held rain or shine, will also include food and beverages, children’s activities and a car show.
The event, being presented by the Middletown Area Historical Society of Dauphin County, is held to celebrate the Middletown Resolves, a set of declarations declaring Middletown’s independence from Great Britain in 1774 two full years before the United States Declaration of Independence was adopted.
“Forty-eight years ago, the borough of Middletown by resolution declared that this fair world take place to honor the Middletown Resolves,” explained Dalton. “The Middletown Resolves are essentially Middletown’s Declaration of Independence. (Middletown’s) were written

“Poirot Investigates!” slated
Open Stage, 25 N. Court St., Harrisburg, will present “Poirot Investigates!” on its Capital Blue Cross Main Stage on select dates through Saturday, June 17.
The show at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 1, will be ASLinterpretated. A lobby talk post-performance discussion will follow the 4 p.m. show on Sunday, June 4.
Producing artistic director Stuart Landon created the production as an adaptation of “Adventure of the Western Star,” from Agatha Christie’s 1924 short story collection “Poirot Investigates.” In addition to adapting the story,
Landon is directing the production and playing the title role.
In this ridiculous, Mel Brooks-style adaptation of Agatha Christie’s short story, world-famous Belgian detective Hercule Poirot and his sidekick, Captain Arthur Hastings, must protect a priceless diamond, the Western Star. As the eccentric suspects pile up, including glamorous movie stars and bumbling aristocrats, Poirot’s investigative skills are put to the test. And when a murder occurs, Poirot must crack the case and catch a thief and murderer.
Veterans warned of benefits scams
Pennsylvania veterans and their advocates should be aware of scammers looking to poach their military pensions, warns the Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA). Pension poaching is financial exploitation often targeting veterans age 65 or older or veterans who are disabled and may be receiving monthly pension payments from the DMVA and/or the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).
scams. The new PACT Act law expands VA health care and benefits for veterans exposed to burn pits, Agent Orange, and other toxic substances.
should be reported to www.ftc.gov.
Chris Gibson as Captain Arthur Hastings
This is not the first time this mystery will unfold at Open Stage, as the theater filmed the production during the pandemic in 2020. However, this is the first time it will be performed live on stage, and it will feature some additions that were not
part of the previous virtual production.
In addition to Landon, the cast will consists of Chris Gibson as Captain Arthur Hastings and Rachel Landon and David Richwine as the suspects. The production will also feature a original score composed and performed by pianist Nicholas Werner, costumes designed by Jack Weitzel, and a lighting design by Tristan Stasiulis.
Christie was an English detective novelist and playwright in the early 1900s. She wrote more than 75 novels, including 66 detective novels and 14 short story collections particularly revolving around Poirot and fictional detective Miss Marple.

Ways to celebrate Father’s Day
Dads do a lot for their families, and Father’s Day is the perfect time to acknowledge those efforts. There are many memorable ways to celebrate Dad this Father’s Day. One idea is to take Dad on a tour through his own history. The popularity of genealogy has skyrocketed over the last decade or more, as various companies have made it easier than ever for individuals to trace their family histories. If Dad is interested in genealogy, Mom and the kids can work together to create a virtual tour through that history. The history can be presented as a printed book or as a video, sharing interesting things learned about Dad’s ancestors but also highlighting key moments in his life. This presentation can be accompanied by a subscription to a genealogy service and a tour of some of Dad’s
childhood haunts before the family enjoys brunch or dinner in the neighborhood where Dad grew up.
Another idea is to take to the great outdoors, weather permitting. The day can be planned around Dad’s favorite outdoor activity. If Dad is an avid fisherman, a family outing can be booked on a charter boat so Dad can focus on catching fish and leave the navigating to someone else. If Dad loves being in natural settings, the family can camp out the night before Father’s Day so he can wake up to the sound of birds chirping. If Dad has a favorite baseball team, the family can take him out to a ballgame.
For fathers who love food, a meal served by a private chef can make for a memorable Father’s Day. Private chefs will do all the work, giving moms and kids more time to
Veteran pension poaching occurs when scammers, unscrupulous players, or dishonest financial planners charge veterans or their advocates for assistance in applying for or submitting applications for military pensions. The scheme often involves financial maneuvers such as advising claimants to hide their assets in trusts or annuity products sometimes resulting in lost investments and lucrative fees paid to the adviser.
Veterans and advocates should be especially vigilant now about PACT Act-related
Veterans and advocates can protect against PACT Act scams in several ways. Veterans should not provide personal, medical, financial, or VA benefit information online or over the phone. Federal agencies will not contact veterans unless they make a request. Veterans should not click on online ads or engage with social media that seems suspicious. Veterans should look for https:// at the start of website addresses, which means they are more likely to be legitimate. Veterans should also enable multi-factor authentication on all accounts, if possible. Veterans should never share their VA login information or deposit VA benefits directly into a third-party bank account unless the person is court appointed or a VA fiduciary. Veterans should also work with veterans service providers they already know. Any suspected fraud
Veterans or their advocates should never pay for U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and/or PA DMVA forms, pension application fees, restructuring assets in order to “qualify,” the promise of eligibility for a pension, or a lump sum payment on a pension.
There are approximately 200 veteran service officers in Pennsylvania who work within organizations such as the DMVA, county Veterans Affairs offices, and several veterans service organizations. To learn more about the DMVA and for contact information for county directors of Veterans Affairs and veteran service officers, visit www.dmva.pa.gov.
Veterans who have experienced or suspect a pension scam should contact 717-783-1944 or PAvets @attorneygeneral.gov or submit a complaint online at www.attorneygeneral.gov. Also, report any VA-related scam to the VA benefits hotline at 800-827-1000.
spend with Dad throughout the day, and then the whole family can enjoy a special meal made by someone whose specialty is crafting delicious dinners. Offerings vary, but many private chefs handle all the cooking and cleaning.
After identifying Dad’s favorite dish, families can look for a chef who specializes in that type of cuisine.
Some Dads may just want to relax on Father’s Day, while others may prefer a more adventurous celebration. If Dad falls into the latter group, a fun and adventurous activity for the whole family can be booked. A kayaking trip, a skydiving session, a round of paintball, or even tickets to a rock concert on Father’s Day weekend may fit the bill.
There is no shortage of ways for families to make this Father’s Day one Dad will not soon forget.

Military license plates available
New military themed license plates will be available throughout Pennsylvania. Recently passed legislation allows the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) to offer license plates honoring military members and their families. Two of these new plates - the Air Medal license plate and the Afghanistan and Iraq veterans license plate - recognize veterans’ special contributions during their service.
Applicants for the Air Medal license plate must submit a completed Form MV-150, “Application for U.S. Military Service License plate,” and a legible photocopy of their Form DD214, “Separation Papers or Discharge Papers,” to show that they are recipients of the medal. The license plate contains the standard Pennsylvania license plate colors of blue, white, and gold and depicts an image of the Air Medal.
Applicants for the Afghanistan and Iraq veterans license plate must submit a completed Form MV-150V, “Application for U.S. Military Veteran License plate,” and a legible photocopy of their Form DD214, “Separation Papers or Discharge Papers.”
Only veterans who served in both theaters of operation are eligible for these license plates.
The license plate contains the standard Pennsylvania license plate colors of blue, white, and
gold and depicts images of both the Afghanistan Campaign Medal and the Operation Iraqi Freedom Medal.
A third license plate design authorized by the legislation is the Blue Star Family license plate. Applications for this license plate must be submitted on Form MV-920, “Application for Blue Star Family Plate,” and certify that the applicant is a family member of an active-duty, Reserve, or National Guard service member. Family members include spouses, parents, step-parents, adoptive parents, foster parents in loco parentis, children, stepchildren, adopted children, brothers, sisters, half-brothers or half-sisters, and grandparents. The license plate contains the standard Pennsylvania license plate colors of blue, white, and gold and depicts an image of the Blue Star Family flag, which has a red border around a white background with a blue star in the center.
All three plates are available for a fee for passenger cars or trucks with a registered gross weight of not more than 14,000 pounds.
More information, including eligibility requirements and images of the license plates, is available by visiting www.dmv .pa.gov and looking under Vehicle Services for Registration Plates and then Military.

Teen SummerZine program will return to Lancaster libraries
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
The third annual Teen SummerZine program will return to Lancaster on Tuesdays, June 6 and 20, July 11 and 25 and Aug. 1 and 15. The sessions will begin at 4 p.m.; the July sessions will be held virtually over Zoom, and the June and August sessions will take place at Manheim Township Public Library, 595 Granite Run Drive, Lancaster.
Through the program, youths ages 12 to 19 will have opportunities to collaborate with multiple guest authors to write poetry and short stories, as well as work together on comics and visual art. At the end of the program, the students’ work will be published in a printed magazine that will be available at each library in Lancaster County.
The meetings in June will feature guest author Jared Reck of Hanover. Reck teaches eighth-grade language arts and has written young adult novels such as “Donuts and
Other
Proclamations of Love” and “A Short History
of the Girl Next Door.” In July, the meetings will be hosted by Kayla Miller, an author and illustrator based in New York. Miller wrote and illustrated the graphic novel series “Click” and coauthored its spin-off series, “Besties.” The August meetings will feature Kwame Ivery, an English teacher and author based in New Jersey. Ivery released his first young adult novel, titled “The Problem With the Other Side,” in 2021 and has worked on various screenplays.
During the first meeting of each month, the guest authors will give a presentation to students and offer insight on their respective careers. After the presentation, the author will provide students with a creative prompt and spend the remainder of the meeting helping them write, draw or make comics based on the prompt. For the second meet-
ing of the month, the guest authors will return to host a workshop and share their creative methods as the kids develop their own material.
“The guest authors will share their own work with students and ask for feedback. It’s a cool aspect to the program because these kids are the authors’ main audience and they want to know what they’re thinking,” said Lindsay Bandy, the program’s supervisor. “I work with the guest author for constructive feedback strategies, and they work with the students to make each other’s work better.” Bandy is also a published author who writes young adult historical fiction.
The Teen SummerZine program was introduced in 2021 as a way to creatively engage students over the
summer while they are not in school. The program won the Best Practices Award from the Pennsylvania State Library Association and was held virtually for its first two years. This is the first year that the program will have in-person meetings and workshops for students. “We didn’t have any county-wide teen programs for the summer; many programs are only tailored to younger kids,” Bandy said. “We wanted to do something to reach the older kids and help them to be creative over the summer break.” In December, the program’s participants will gather at the Manheim Township Public Library to celebrate the publication with cupcakes. For more information, visit https://tinyurl.com/teen summerzine.
He has received a host of military decorations and civilian honors. In his spare time, he volunteers at the Lebanon Veterans Affairs Hospital and participates in the Patriot Guard Riders.
The meeting is open to the public, and all persons interest-
ed in the history of the Vietnam War are invited to attend. Donations will be accepted. For additional information, contact Richard Burton at 717-5452336 or centralpavietnamrt @verizon.net. To learn more, visit www.centralpavietnam roundtable.com.
