Chorale Wins National Award The Susquehanna Chorale, a nationally acclaimed adult chamber ensemble based in central Pennsylvania, recently won second place in the American Prize competition, which recognizes and rewards the best performers, ensembles and composers in the United States. The chorale tied for second place in the Community Chorus division of the competition. Linda L. Tedford founded the Susquehanna Chorale in 1981 and continues to serve as its conductor and artistic director. Singers are chosen by audition for the 40-member volunteer ensemble, which strives for a precision blend of voices, professional-quality performances, and a strong personal connection with audience members. Thousands of qualified contestants from all 50 states have entered the
American Prize competition since its founding in 2009. Performance entries are accepted from both community and professional groups. Entrants range from well-known artists to lesser known ones and come from communities both large and small. Entries are judged on overall artistic quality, musicality, rhythmic incisiveness, ensemble, tone quality, accuracy, intonation and knowledge of style. The chorale was awarded the Community Chorus prize based on select pieces from its professional recordings “Sing Me to Heaven” and “Roots and Wings.” The chorale received additional consideration for the American Prize in 2015. The chorale is funded in part by the Cultural Enrichment Fund, the capital region’s united arts fund, and the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts.

Friends In Action International (FIA) is looking for individuals to transform a variety of supplies into items to be sold at a fundraiser event on Saturday, Oct. 3. The event was inspired by the HGTV show “Flea Market Flip.” A local nonprofit, FIA uses infrastructure projects in remote locations of the globe as a platform to share the Gospel with unreached indigenous people groups. Interested readers are invited to visit FIA’s Middletown headquarters, located at 3950 E. Harrisburg Pike, by appointment to select free supplies. They may browse items left over from construction projects as well as donated yard sale items. These supplies include chairs, tables, bicycles, small furniture, books, mechanical items, and household items. With materials secured, participants can work at home using their eye for style and some elbow grease to turn these leftovers into something new. While the television show challenges participants to turn trash into treasure to compete for a cash prize, the FIA version will
instead ask participants to donate their finished creations to sell in support of FIA’s international mission work. All donated projects will be featured at a large sale hosted at the FIA headquarters on Saturday, Oct. 3, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. In the case of rain, the sale will be moved inside a warehouse facility on the property. Classmates Plan Fundraiser Combined Church Golf Tournament Service Slated Hershey High School’s Class of 1979 will hold a fundraiser golf tournament on Saturday, Sept. 26, at Deer Valley Golf Course, 101 Stoudt Road, Hummelstown. Funds raised will help to offset the health care costs of a classmate who is being treated for cancer. The “Another Shot at Deer Valley tournament is the brainchild of several classmates who golfed together last summer when in town for their 40th high school class reunion. Inspired to reconnect and play together again before the next reunion, the friends decided to revisit Deer Valley and expand the event to include other players and sponsors in an effort to raise money to help their friend with his medical expenses.
Bruce Cary, committee chair, noted the goal is to raise $12,000, and the group had 85 registrants and more than 20 sponsors as of Aug. 27. The registration fee per golfer includes 18 holes, use of a cart, lunch, a goodie bag and opportunities to compete for a hole-in-one cash prize and prizes for the longest drive and closest-to-the-pin. Space is still available for individual golfers or teams, both Hershey High School alumni and other community members. Course requirements for mask wearing and social distancing will be observed. To register, readers may visit www.anothershot79.com before Friday, Sept. 11.

HCPAC Sets Auditions For “Moana Jr.”
Chatter Tonya Bibb • 717-623-2767 • tkcondran@gmail.com
Hi, everyone! Here we are in the final weeks of the summer. Even though there wasn’t as much to do this summer because of the ongoing pandemic restrictions, the season still flew by pretty fast, don’t you agree? It feels like it was just June last week. Oh well, I am ready for some cooler crisper air anyhow. Heaven & Hell A holy man was having a conversation with the Lord one day and said, “Lord, I would like to know what Heaven and Hell are like.” The Lord led the holy man to two doors. He opened one of the doors and the holy man looked in. In the middle of the room was a large round table. In the middle of the table was a large pot of stew which smelled delicious and made the holy man’s mouth water. The people sitting around the table were thin and sickly. They appeared to be famished. They were holding spoons with very long handles that were strapped to their arms and each found it possible to reach into the pot of stew and take a spoonful, but because the handle was longer than their arms, they could not get the spoons back into their mouths. The holy man shuddered at the
sight of their misery and suffering. The Lord said, “You have seen Hell.” They went to the next room and opened the door. It was exactly the same as the first one. There was the large round table with the large pot of stew which made the holy man’s mouth water. The people were equipped with the same long-handled spoons, but here the people were well nourished and plump, laughing and talking. The holy man said, “I don’t understand.” “It is simple” said the Lord, “it requires but one skill. You see, they have learned to feed each other, while the greedy think only of themselves.” Happy Birthdays First for this week, an extra special birthday wish goes out to my uncle John Herneisey of Londonderry Township! His cake-day is Aug. 30. I hope your day is as sweet and fun as you, John! I love you to pieces! Happy birthday to Karen Gomboc of Royalton! Her cakeday is Aug. 26. If you day is half as nice as you, Karen, it will be a wonderful day! Hugs! Happy birthday to Bobby Snyder IV of Royalton! His cake-day is Aug. 26. I hope your day is full of fun, Bobby!

Recipe of the Week Ramen Scrambled Eggs Great for breakfast, lunch, or breakfast-for-dinner! Ingredients 1 (3 ounce) package ramen noodles (any flavor) 1 teaspoon chopped fresh parsley 1 tablespoon vegetable oil 1 onion, chopped 2 large eggs 1 teaspoon water 1 pinch salt Directions 1. Bring a pot of water to a boil; add ramen noodles and cook for 3 minutes. Drain water and stir seasoning packet and parsley into noodles. 2. Heat oil in a non-stick skillet over medium heat; cook and stir onion until fragrant, about 2 minutes. Add noodles and stir for 2 minutes more. 3. Whisk eggs, water, and salt together in a bowl; pour into same skillet as noodle mixture. Cook and stir eggs until set and cooked through, 2 to 4 minutes. Tip of the Week A pinch of baking soda in a gallon of freshly-brewed iced tea takes out bad-tasting tannins and prevents cloudiness. Fact of the Week A sheep, a duck and a rooster were the first passengers in a hot air balloon. In 1783, the first hot air balloon was launched carrying a sheep, duck, and a rooster. The flight lasted for under 30 minutes before landing safely with its passengers. Joke of the Week There’s a technical term for a sunny, warm day that follows two rainy days. It’s called a Monday. Food for Thought Pray and I shall hear. - 2 Chronicles 7:14 Have a great week, everybody!

In lieu of its annual Walk of Love Cross Country 5K, Brittany’s Hope, a nonprofit organization that helps orphaned children around the world, will instead hold the Brittany’s Hope Social Distance 5K on Saturday, Sept. 19, at The Barn at Stone Gables in Elizabethtown. The change, which was made due to the coronavirus pandemic, will adhere to all CDC social distancing and safety guidelines, while also raising money for the charity. The race will have a time trial type setup that will allow runners to start individually or in small groups of associated participants such as family members or people who live together. Designated start times will begin at 7:30 a.m. and run through 10:30 a.m. Participants will be able to run safely in a chip-timed, time-segmented race. “Basically, it will be a rolling start,” explained MaiLynn Sahd, executive director. “A runner will make a reservation online for a time to begin.” She noted that runners must stay in their cars until 10 minutes before they race. Runners will be able to pick up their bibs containing the timing chip at the starting line not more than five minutes before their start time.
The 5K course will be a crosscountry style that includes paved trails and trails through the woods. The course, which will be clearly marked, is a different course from past years. Additionally, runners will have on-course passing restrictions. Upon completing their run and crossing the finish line, participants must return to their vehicles. Sahd emphasized that the race will have a cap of 300 participants. “We are confident that we can do it in a safe manner,” she noted. Because of health and safety precautions, there will be no games, activities, lunch or fun walk this year. “On a typical year, we attracted close to 400 runners. It’s a big event,” said Sahd. “Close to 1,000 people came because in the past we had activities and games, a petting zoo and lunch and people picnicked there. It was an event that was highly anticipated by the community.” People can also participate in a virtual fun walk that weekend. “Whether walking 1 or 2 miles, we encourage families to get out and walk, run or bike together the weekend of Sept. 19,” Sahd said. People may complete the distance anytime between Friday, Sept. 18, and Sunday, Sept. 20, and submit their time, activity and picture.
Runners will have to keep socially distanced during the Brittany’s Hope 5K on Sept. 19 at The Barn at Stone Gables. Proceeds from race and virtual fun walk registration fees will directly benefit Brittany’s Hope, which was founded in 1999 as part of an effort to facilitate adoptions of special needs children from around the world by issuing adoption grants to assist families with the costs associated with international adoptions. In addition to issuing grants, the organization provides humanitarian relief efforts, including food and health care, to benefit the children who remain in orphanages worldwide. “This race is to raise money to fund the programs,” Sahd said. “It is also a day of coming together for adoptees and families who have adopted and to remember those kids who are still in need of families. (We want) to celebrate
them, uplift them and advocate for them.” The social distance 5K event will be held rain or shine. “The funds are important, but having people doing something they enjoy will be fun,” Sahd added. “With many things that have been canceled, at least we have one thing that is going on and we are excited.” The Barn at Stone Gables is located at 1 Hollinger Lane, Star Barn Way, Elizabethtown. Details and registration are available at www.brittanyshope.org/fundraisers or by searching for “Brittany’s Hope 5K Social Distance Race 2020” on Facebook. Jeffrey Clouser, director of music ministries at Palmyra Church of the Brethren (CoB), has been published in the summer 2020 issue of the United Church of Christ (UCC) Musicians’ Association Journal. In a three-page article, Clouser presents “Creating Vital and Faithful Worship for the Intergenerational Church.” Intergenerational congregations have a membership that consists of two or more generations which participate in activities that make them aware of different perspectives. There is an increasing interaction and cooperation among the generations to achieve goals that bring about change in the church, according to Clouser. In his article, Clouser reviews characteristics that illustrate how church musicians and worship leaders can create vital and faithful worship that ensures success in the current intergenerational context of worship services. To read the article, readers may visit https://uccma.wildapricot.org/resources /Documents/UCCMA%20Journal %202020%20Summer.pdf. The article begins on page 22. At Palmyra CoB, Clouser facilitates the choral programs, consisting of the Chancel Choir, Men’s Ensemble, and Women’s Ensemble, along with the handbell and praise team programs. He also participates in the planning of the worship services and organizes special musical events for the church. He also coordinates the Summer Melodies musical offerings for summer worship. Clouser also works part time as a paraeducator for Lancaster-
Lebanon IU-13 serving children with intellectual and emotional disabilities. Clouser received his certification in church music through Virginia Wesleyan University in 2015 and a Bachelor of Science in elementary and special education from Millersville University in 1991. In the summer of 2017, he began his Master of Church Music degree program at Trinity Lutheran Seminary at Capital University in Columbus, Ohio. He maintains memberships in Handbell Musicians of America Area 2, the Lancaster and Harrisburg Chapters of the AGO as well as ACDA, The Hymn Society, UCC Musicians Association and the Association of Lutheran Church Musicians. As time permits, he also sing with the Elizabethtown College Community Choir and serves as festival coordinator for the Central PA Handbell Festival.
