Troop 97 Attends Summer Camp hat do you get when you send 19 Boy Scouts, six leaders, and a trailer packed with camping gear to summer camp in Kunkletown? For Boy Scouts of America Troop 97 of Londonderry Township, the answer is 114 earned merit badges, the title of Ultimate Frisbee champion, and countless memories. Trexler Scout Reservation (TSR) is nestled in 900 acres of pine-crested wilderness in Monroe County. Troop 97 arrived on a Sunday and was treated to a barbecue dinner after a tour of the camp. Bright and early on Monday, after tidying their campsite, Scouts dispersed to their merit badge sessions, including Camping, Citizenship in the Nation, and Environmental Science - all of which are required to earn the rank of Eagle Scout - as well as Woodcarving, Exploration, Fingerprinting, Basketry, Weather, and Mammal Study. Scout Jordan Paul reported, “My favorite merit badge was Leatherwork, and it was the first time I actually got to make something out of
W
leather - a pocket knife holder.” Troop 97’s 19 Scouts enrolled in 37 different merit badge classes. It is easier to complete certain merit badges at summer camp when the facilities have specific amenities. “Camp Trexler has a large lake where a variety of water sports take place, which allowed our boys to earn Canoeing, Kayaking, Rowing, Swimming, and Lifesaving merit badges,” noted Scoutmaster Bill Lee. Additionally, the COPE (Challenging, Outdoor, Personal Experience) program challenged Scouts. Working in teams, Scouts climbed a 65-foot wall, rappelled, ziplined, and conquered a ropes course. “I am very proud that all 19 of our Scouts completed the requirements for the Disabilities Awareness Merit Badge,” Lee stated. Every Scout unit built a gateway to its campsite and had to add an element each day to improve the entrance feature. Daily campsite inspections were held by the TSR staff, and Troop 97 won the best campsite award one day.

There was plenty of time to enjoy fishing, biking trails, and a massive slip and slide made from old airplane banners. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that everyone age 6 months and older get a flu vaccination. While the CDC recommends flu shots by the end of October for everyone over age 6 months, certain groups of people are at greater risk for complications from the flu. These groups include people with diabetes, pregnant women, adults over age 65, children under age 5, those with asthma and other chronic lung diseases, those with kidney and liver disorders, heart disease patients and those with compromised immune systems. In addition to flu shots, Pfizer, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccines are available at Giant and Martin’s pharmacies to adults age 18 and above. COVID-19 vaccine type may vary by location. Pharmacies offering the Pfizer vaccine can administer to teens ages 12 to 17. Parental consent is required, and the parent/guardian must be on-site. The COVID-19 vaccine is administered at no out-of-pocket cost. If applicable, an appointment for the second dose will be made at the time customers receive their first dose. To find the nearest Giant or Martin’s pharmacy, visit www.giantfoodstores.com or www.martinsfoods.com or download the free Giant or Martin’s Pharmacy App.
In 1942, the Nazis were racing to develop the first atomic bomb. Germany had the physicists and the uranium, plus one more crucial ingredient: heavy water. The lone plant in the world able to produce heavy water was located in Norway’s Vemork, under control of the Nazis. The only way to stop production was to destroy the plant, which was protected by a castle fortress set on a precipitous gorge. “The Winter Fortress” tells the true story of how a small band of spies helped to sabotage the Vemork plant. Bascomb is also the author
of “Hunting Eichmann,” an account of the pursuit and capture of Nazi war criminal Adolf Eichmann, and “The Escape Artists,” which tells the story of a prisoner-of-war prison break in World War I. The Zoom meeting is open to the public, and no registration is required. To attend, visit www.central paww2roundtable.org. The Central Pennsylvania World War II Roundtable is a nonprofit organization that provides a forum for World War II veterans, authors, historians, and citizens to share their knowledge and experiences related to the war.
