Township Manager Negley Retires James Negley has retired as township manager, ending a 44-year career with Derry Township. An event was held in Negley’s honor on his last day, Nov. 5. Friends and colleagues gathered to wish him well and to thank him for his support and leadership. He was presented with a Derry Township Retirement Award and a proclamation naming Nov. 5 as James Negley Employee Service Day in Derry Township. Dauphin County Commissioner Michael Pries, former Derry Township supervisor, presented Negley with a citation, and state Rep. Thomas Mehaffie presented him with a citation from the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. A citation acknowledging his service was also presented from state Sen. John DiSanto from the Pennsylvania Senate. Negley served in the Marine Corps from 1965 to 1969, which included combat service in Vietnam. Five years following his return home from his military tour, he became a police officer with the Derry Township Police Department, with three years of experience in law

enforcement as an officer with the Borough of Elizabethtown. He became a detective in 1976 and possessed commendable investigative skills and most notably an exceptional ability in facilitating polygraphs, gaining him recognition from Dauphin and surrounding counties. Negley rose to the top-ranking position in the department in 1991 when he was promoted to chief of police. The department achieved both state and national accreditation under his leadership. He answered a call for assistance to oversee township government as interim manager in 1993 and again in 1996, a position that he was offered permanently until his retirement. He filled dual roles as chief of police and township manager for five years until he official resigned as the chief on March 29, 1996. He was the township manager for 22 years, during which time the Municipal Complex on Clearwater Road was constructed. He served as the manager of the Industrial Commercial Development Authority. He has been married to his wife, Deb, for 46 years.

classes, educational experiences, social opportunities, and community service projects. With more than 700 members, the center provides a retreat for about 140 local active adults per day. Originally the Senior Center of Derry Township, the center was founded in 1983. The current senior center has been named after the late Harold and Melda Mohler since 1997 in recognition of their support and leadership. In honor of their contributions, the Mohler Senior Center board announced it will pledge $100,000 to name the new banquet room in memory of the Mohlers. The new name of the senior center will be determined in the near future and plans are underway to expand the programming

at the center to meet the growing needs of the senior population. The new community center will include space for the Derry Township People Movers organization, which provides free transportation to seniors over age 60. In addition, the proposed new Hershey Community Center, which will open in the spring of 2020, will provide additional recreational and social opportunities for the entire community. It will give residents of all ages more room to swim, participate in classes, hold community meetings, and enjoy socializing together. It will also offer expanded programs for students after school. The feature exhibit at the AACA Museum, 161 Museum Drive, Hershey, from Nov. 17 through Sunday, April 28, 2019, is called “Land Yachts: Postwar American Luxury Convertibles.” The exhibition will showcase full-size American convertibles built from the immediate post-World War II years through 1976, when Cadillac produced what was then believed to be the last American convertible. During this era, the cars conveyed a glamorous image and public figures often favored convertibles to be visible to the public, including President Eisenhower’s ride in a 1953 Cadillac Eldorado

during his inaugural parade. For most of this period, the traditional full-size American cars got progressively larger and more luxurious, hence the description “Land Yachts.” Guests can also enjoy a Dodge Brothers display guest curated by the MidAtlantic Region of the Dodge Brothers Club. From mid-November through Sunday, Jan. 6, the museum galleries will be decked out in the holiday spirit with dozens of decorated trees, model train displays, and more. The AACA Museum’s retail store will also offer holiday gifts.

Over 25 years of experience

This year, the Elizabethtown Area Chamber of Commerce (EACC) is spearheading a collaboration between numerous local businesses and organizations to focus holiday efforts under one brand: Christmas TreE-town. EACC executive director Heather Hohenwarter said that the initiative will highlight the many events that take place in the Elizabethtown area during the holiday season. “The idea behind Christmas TreE-town was to curate the many existing events under one banner,” Hohenwarter explained. “It made sense to create a central source of information for families racing to check things off their hectic holiday to-do list, like ‘visit Santa,’ ‘see Christmas lights,’ and ‘buy teachers gifts.’ So why not do it all in charming Elizabethtown?” A website for Christmas TreE-town, www.christmastree-town.com, recently launched and includes a comprehensive events calendar, suggested itineraries, and featured events such as the first-ever Star Barn Village Christmas Drive-Through Light Show opening for the season on Friday, Nov. 23, and longtime traditions like the annual Elizabethtown Holiday Parade, which will begin at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 8. The theme of this year’s parade, “An Old-Fashioned Christmas,” will also be carried out in the inaugural holiday

window decorating contest being coordinated by the Chamber. Elizabethtown-area businesses may enter the window decorating contest by registering at www.christmastree -town.com in order for judges to have a complete list of participants to include in judging. The deadline for completed entries will be Thursday, Nov. 29. Judging will take place between that date and the day of the Holiday Parade, at which the contest winners will be announced. Rep. Dave Hickernell, Cindy Phillips, and Tyler Smith will serve as judges. A cash prize will be awarded to the winner, along with gift baskets to the second- and third-place contestants. Plus, everyone is encouraged to vote for their favorite window display at the “Christmas TreE-town” Facebook page in order to determine the Fan Favorite - the winner of which will also receive a gift basket filled with treats and gift cards to area attractions. Christmas TreE-town will also feature an array of new decorative banners, flags, and - of course - Christmas trees in the center square to add to the charm of the holiday season in Elizabethtown. The Christmas TreE-town Express will offer a complimentary bus shuttle for visitors traveling to and from the interactive model railroad displays created by The Train Guys at the Elizabethtown Public

“An Old-Fashioned Christmas,” the theme of the annual Elizabethtown Holiday Parade on Dec. 8, will also serve as the theme for the holiday window decorating contest being sponsored by the Elizabethtown Area Chamber of Commerce. The contest is one of several festivities planned as part of the Chamber’s new Christmas TreE-town collaboration with area businesses and organizations. Library, 10 S. Market St., and the Masonic Village and Elizabethtown (MV&E) Model Railroad Club at Masonic Village, 1 Masonic Drive. It will operate on a continuous loop between the library and the Masonic Village Health Care Center parking lot from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays, Dec. 1, 8, and 15. On these days, the last shuttle back to the Masonic Village will leave the library at 3:45 p.m. Additionally, downtown businesses will offer special promotions, sales, and

activities during the E-Town Nights OldFashioned Christmas celebration on Friday, Dec. 14, from 6 to 9 p.m. For more details, readers may email christmastreetown@gmail.com, visit www.christmastree-town.com, or contact Kelly Fuddy at the EACC at 717-361-7188. Local churches, groups, and businesses with holiday events that they would like to promote are also encouraged to contact the Chamber to have those added to the Christmas TreE-town website calendar.

Women’s Club Hosts Speaker Lenker Manor-Paxtang Women’s Club hosted Kitty Byk of Elizabethtown as the guest speaker for its October meeting. Byk is a native of Austria who survived a labor camp during World War II. She shared her experience of being separated from her family and eventually immigrating to the U.S.

Club Marks 50th Anniversary The Lenker Manor-Paxtang Women’s Club recently celebrated its 50th anniversary with a luncheon at the Susquehanna Club. The event was attended by 46 ladies, including the first club president, Bonnie Dando. In addition, 23 other past presidents were in attendance, including 11 who are

no longer active members. Over the years, the organization has donated countless service hours and a total of more than $150,000 to local nonprofit organizations through fundraising efforts. Most notably, the club holds its annual Spring Luncheon and Fashion Show each April.

#GivingTuesday Event Scheduled This #GivingTuesday, Hope Springs Farm will celebrate giving by sharing its donations with other local organizations and businesses. #GivingTuesday is a global day of giving that harnesses the collective power of individuals, communities, and organizations to encourage philanthropy and to celebrate generosity worldwide. Following Thanksgiving, this year’s #GivingTuesday will take place on Tuesday, Nov. 27. The event will kick off the giving season by inspiring people to collaborate and give back. Hope Springs Farm will share its donations through its Sharing Hope program, in which donors have an opportunity to give to favorite charities. Donations this #GivingTuesday will be

also be used to continue the many community programs and activities offered to Hope Springs Farm growers. Growers package boxes for Operation Christmas Child, deliver meals for Meals on Wheels, sort and bag food at the Caring Cupboard, and help Caitlin’s Smiles by assembling kits for hospitalized children. They also volunteer at the Ronald McDonald House, Hershey Gardens, food banks, nursing homes, and other local places. On Nov. 27, donations may be made by visiting www.hopespringsfarm.org or finding Hope Springs Farm on Facebook. For more information, readers may call 717-298-1845.

It is also important for veterans to safeguard their DD214/215 and other military documents by filing them at their county courthouse of record. The DD-214 is an official document that contains the information needed to verify military service and help to avoid verification issues later in life. The DD-215 is used to correct errors or make additions to a DD-214. Additionally, any National Guard member who has not been ordered on active duty will not receive a DD-214. The discharge documents for National Guard members are the NGB-22 and NGB-23. The easiest way to manage military documents is to make sure they are filed in a safe place immediately upon leaving the military. However, veterans who need help should never hesitate to contact the DMVA for assistance with searching for any military documents. Anyone needing assistance from the DMVA to locate their DD-214/215 or other military documentation may contact 717-861-8910 or ra-req@pa.gov.

HUMMELSTOWN FIRE CO. 249-251 East Main St.

The Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA) appreciates the sacrifices made by all veterans and wants to see that everyone leaving the military receives every benefit they earned with their service to America. To prepare for the future, veterans are encouraged to register with the DMVA, apply for federal health care benefits, and safeguard important military paperwork. Taking these steps when transitioning back to civilian life may help to make accessing military benefits easier going forward. Veterans can sign up for the DMVA Veterans Registry at www.register.dmva.pa.gov. In addition to veterans, family members and people who work with veterans can sign up for the registry to receive helpful information about programs, benefits, and services. Information about how to apply for U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) health care benefits can be found by going to www.va.gov/HEALTH BENEFITS/apply/.
