Krypton Cougars Win Competition The Krypton Cougars, Team 2539, a high school robotics team based in Palmyra, competed at the 2021 Ramp Riot offseason competition at Wissahickon High School in Ambler on Oct. 30 and 31. Due to COVID, this year’s competition consisted of two singleday events, each attended by 15 teams, mostly different, rather than the normal twoday event with 30 teams. Composed of high school students from Palmyra, Hershey, and homeschool programs, the Krypton Cougars team competes in the FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC). FIRST stands for “for inspiration and recognition of science and technology.” After completing the 2021 at-home season with its first championship blue banner in March, the team entered several local offseason competitions to develop new members and get back to live competition.

The Susquehanna Chorale will present its 40th anniversary Candlelight Christmas concert series on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, Dec. 17, 18, and 19. Performances of “Legacy: A Candlelight Christmas” will take place on Dec. 17 at the High Center, Messiah University, 1 College Ave., Grantham, at 8 p.m.; Dec. 18 at Elizabethtown Church of the Brethren, 777 S. Mount Joy St., Elizabethtown, at 8 p.m.; and Dec. 19 at Market Square Presbyterian Church, 20 S. Second St., Harrisburg, at 4 p.m. The chorale is an adult chamber ensemble of 40 auditioned singers, founded in 1981 by artistic director and conductor Linda L. Tedford. “The Susquehanna Chorale’s Candlelight Christmas concerts are eagerly anticipated by audience members,” Tedford said. “This year’s program brings back the traditions of glorious music, audience sing-alongs of familiar carols, and closing moments surrounded by candlelight and the quiet peace of ‘Silent Night,’ all of which were absent from our lives last year.” The chorale will perform Gustav Holst’s “Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence,” Egil Hovland’s “The Glory of the Father,” Matthew Culloton’s “In Dulci Jubilo,” Mack Wilberg’s “Christmas Is Coming,” and Gordon Langford’s “Jingle Bells,” arranged for The King’s Singers. This year’s concerts will also feature a new work by Dan Forrest. Commissioned for the chorale’s 40th anniversary, the piece is a setting of a poem by Leslie Leyland Fields, “Let the Stable Still Astonish.”

As he enters his new role, Ken credits Bob for his model of leadership, decision-making and client focus that prepared the company for the transition. The new leadership team is now composed of Jessica Kosoff, EIT; Nathan Fry; Steve Reed; and Greg Bishop. For Ken, stewardship was taught through the actions of his father, Henry Funk. He

noted that his dad always gave back to the communities where the company had projects or where its associates and subcontractors lived and raised families. Open Stage Welcomes New Team Members Open Stage, one of Harrisburg’s nonprofit theater companies, has hired three new team members. These additions come just a few months after the downtown theater company began to once again produce in-person shows for its 36th season and reopened the renovated facility. New enhancements include a reimagined lounge for cabaret and music performance, called the Court Street Cabaret, and an enhanced Studio Theater, the new home to Open Stage’s web shows. The new team members are Jess Yahner, development and outreach manager; Griffin Cusick, marketing coordinator; and TJ Creedon, graphic designer. Yahner is a central Pennsylvania native who has been a part of the local theater and dance community for many years. Among various positions, she has worked as a performer, choreographer, director, and stage manager for Gretna Theatre, Little Theatre of Mechanicsburg, Theatre Harrisburg, and Susquehanna Stage. She has taught at various dance studios, including The Move-

ment Laboratory, Hershey School of Dance, and The Harrisburg Dance Conservatory. In addition to dance and theater, Yahner has an extensive background working in early childhood education and elementary special education. Cusick was born and raised in Chicago. After earning a degree in film from University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee, he worked as a freelance production assistant and editor on television commercials for large Midwest companies

like Aurora Health Care, Fleet Farm, and Marquette University. He has also written and directed several short films, some of which have been shown at various festivals throughout the Midwest. In his free time, Cusick is active in the community, volunteering with various organizations. Creedon is a graphic and web designer who has been involved in theater and the performing arts since he was a child. As a designer, Creedon

has created just about everything from actors’ websites to print advertisements to reference books. He has performed on community and regional theater stages across Central Pennsylvania as a singer, an actor, a host, and more. The three new members join a team of artists, including business manager Brianna Dow, production manager Chris Gibson, assistant production manager Benny Benamati, and costume and prop manager Rachel Landon.

There will be no December 29 issues.

Deadlines for January 5 issues of this paper will be advanced at least 24 hours. Our offices will be closed on Friday, December 24. Directions 1 - To make the crust, place the flour, sugar, and zest on a pastry board or clean, dry, flat surface. Mix thoroughly to combine. Add the butter and work it into the dry ingredients. Gather the mixture into a round and create a well in the center. Drop eggs into the well, beat with a fork while gathering the dry mixture, then knead once the dough completely Torta Dolce di Ricotta (Serves 10 to 12) forms. Refrigerate for 30 minutes. 2 - Preheat the oven to 350 Crust 2 cups all-purpose flour, plus degrees Fahrenheit. Butter extra to dust board and pan and flour a 10-inch spring3/4 cup sugar form baking pan. Set aside. 3 - Meanwhile, to prepare the Zest of one lemon 1/2 cup unsalted butter, filling, combine the eggs, softened, plus extra to ricotta cheese, vanilla, sugar, grease the pan orange zest, orange juice, 2 large eggs lemon juice, and candied pear

(if using) in a large mixing bowl. Mix thoroughly and set aside. 4 - After the dough has been in the refrigerator for 30 minutes, remove it and place it on a large board or clean, dry, flat surface, lightly dusted with flour. Using a floured rolling pin, roll the dough out into a large circle, approximately 14 inches in diameter. Now roll the dough over the rolling pin and carefully unwind it over the baking pan, gently easing it to fit evenly in the bottom and up the sides of the pan. 5 - Pour or spoon the filling mixture into the crust, leaving about 1/4 inch below the rim of the pan. Place the pan in a preheated oven and bake for 1 hour and 45 minutes, until the center is slightly firm. Cool for at least 2 hours. To save time, the cheesecake can be left unrefrigerated overnight when baked the night before. 6 - Carefully run a plastic knife or rigid spatula around the sides of the pan to remove it, so that no crust is pulled away when releasing the spring of the pan. Serve at room temperature.

After a delicious holiday meal, there is a good chance guests will be looking forward to a sweet treat. Many families have their go-to desserts on special occasions, but holiday meals can be made even more memorable, and flavorful, by taking a chance on new recipes. A decadent cheesecake is on the menu in many Italian American families. Italian cheesecake does not typically contain cream cheese or graham cracker crust. Rather, Italian cheesecakes are full of citrus flavor and made with modified pie crust. This recipe for Torta Dolce di Ricotta is from Daniel Paterna’s “Feast of the Seven Fishes: A Brooklyn Italian’s Recipes Celebrating Food & Family.”

Strategies To Disconnect From Devices Devices are a big part of life in the 21st century. People may have access to tablets, laptops, and desktop computers, but people may be likely to spend more time on their smartphones. With a new year on the horizon, people may resolve to make better use of their time in the months ahead. Disconnecting from devices like smartphones can help individuals accomplish that goal. Individuals can employ various strategies as they aspire to spend less time on their devices. Suggested strategies include closing some social media accounts, turning off notifications, and changing one’s reading habits. Social media can be a useful tool to stay connected with family, friends, and the local community, but those connections can be maintained through one or two social media platforms. Closing some social media accounts can reduce the temptation to pick up a device, ultimately paving the way to more time away from tablets, smartphones, and laptops.

People may also be tempted to pick up their smartphone when they hear the sound of a notification. Turning off notifications makes it easier to disconnect from devices and potentially be more productive. E-reader enthusiasts may have access to millions of books at their fingertips, but that access could come at a steep cost. Distractions abound when reading books on tablets, smartphones, and e-readers. The internet is only a swipe or two away when reading e-books, while print books provide no such access to the internet. For this reason, readers may consider sticking to print books. Tablets and e-readers employ the same notification system as smartphones, so readers who prefer the digital route can turn those notifications off before sitting down with a good book. Some people may aspire to disconnect from their devices more often in the new year. The success of such resolutions may depend on the approach individuals employ.
