Local Band Nominated For Award
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
SmallTown Troubadours, a local band comprising students from the Solanco and Hempfield areas, has been nominated for the Central Pennsylvania Music Awards (CPMA) in the Best Youth Band category. Voting for the award concluded at the end of January, and the band will perform in front of CPMA’s judges at a showcase on Saturday, Feb. 25, at Lebanon Valley College. Should Small Town Troubadours qualify as a finalist, it will perform at the CPMA ceremony on Thursday, March 30, at Hersheypark Stadium.
The band includes four juniors from Solanco High School: rhythm guitarist Shaun Graybill, drummer Waylon Simcox, lead vocalist Logan Bear and lead guitarist Raif Groves.
Landisville Middle School Slates YES Program
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
On Friday, Feb. 17, Landisville Middle School, 340 Mumma Drive, Landisville, will host Your Economic Success (YES). The halfday program is offered by Junior Achievement of South Central PA (JASCPA) for seventh- and eighth-graders at the school. YES is a program that is designed to help students recognize the importance of making financial and career decisions in their lives as they become young adults. During the morning of the event, volunteers will work with students on a variety of activities and share their experiences as working adults. YES will offer four activities for the seventh-graders and four different activities for the eighth-graders;

The band’s bassist, Riley Hornberger, is a senior at Hempfield High School.
At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, Shaun and Waylon began learning guitar and playing songs together. The pair had never played any instruments prior but focused on music as a way to pass the time during the lockdowns. “It started out as two boys hanging out and playing guitar,” said Adrienne Graybill, Shaun’s mother and the band’s acting manager. “Kids weren’t able to go anywhere or do anything, so the band was a good thing that came from the pandemic.”
Six months after Shaun and Waylon started playing together, Logan joined the project. Shortly after, Small Town Troubadours’ lineup was completed with the addition of Raif and Riley. The band initially
focused on covering songs in the Southern rock and classic rock genres but is currently in the process of writing original music. “They’re old souls; they’re playing music that their parents and grandparents listened to,” Adrienne said. Small Town Troubadours describes its sound as being influenced by the likes of Lynyrd Skynyrd and Whiskey Myers.
In the spring of 2022, Small Town Troubadours began playing shows all over the county. The band took any opportunity to share its sound with an audience, performing at local fairs, carnivals and vendor shows. Since then, Small Town Troubadours expanded its shows to include private parties, restaurants and clubs.
“They don’t want to pretend to be
people that they’re not. That’s a big thing for them,” Adrienne said. “They have fun playing their music, and they work hard at it.” Each member of the band dedicates time and energy into the project while juggling the responsibilities of being a high school student and working part time. In addition to Adrienne assisting with booking shows, Waylon’s father does sound for each gig and Logan’s mother handles merchandise.
“They don’t just stand up there and strum a guitar. They have a lot of energy and they connect with people,” Adrienne said. “We’re excited to see what the future brings.”

The first seventh-grade activity will focus on job qualifications and what level of education is needed for different kinds of careers. The second activity will explore 16 career clusters to help students to determine which job would suit them best. Students will complete a survey to determine what types of jobs they might find enjoyable. The next activity will cover the topic of soft skills and will concentrate on communication, teamwork, work ethic and attitude. For the final activity, seventhgraders will detail the steps involved with manufacturing and distribution by playing a board game that follows Starbucks’ business model.
The eighth-graders’ first activity will revolve around balance and help students to learn about budgets, income and gross income versus net income. The second activity will have the kids discuss tips for interviewing by playing a game to act out different interview scenarios. The third activity will educate students on how to apply soft skills like teamwork in sci-
ence- and technology-related activities and discuss why workers in those fields are in high demand. The final activity will assist eighth-graders with building their resumes.
Landisville Middle School has hosted YES since 2017. The program’s activities build on lessons that were taught ath the school the previous year. Each activity is 30 minutes long, and students take turns rotating through each station. “It’s a great way to inspire today’s students,” said Allison Kierce, chief operating officer for JASCPA.
JASCPA is always looking for volunteers to participate in programs like YES. Each volunteer will operate his or her assigned activity for the duration of the morning as groups of students rotate through. Volunteers must be at least 21 years old, and alumni are encouraged to sign up to volunteer at their former schools. “It’s a busy morning, but it’s super fun,” said Kierce. “The activities connect the dots between what teachers tell the kids and what happens in the real world.”
JASCPA still needs volunteers for Landisville Middle School’s YES program. To sign up to volunteer, visit www.jascpa.org.

At Overlook Park, Humans Are Dogs’ Best Friend
BY JEFF FALK
If indeed the symbiotic relationship between humans and dogs exists, then we must take care of them much to the same degree that they take care of us. We have a certain responsibility to do what’s right for our canine
friends, to do what’s best for them.
It’s that exact philosophy upon which Overlook Dog Park is based. It’s a special place where dogs can run and play, a space where dogs and their owners can interact or mingle, simply a place where dogs can be dogs.
Located at 2215 Fruitville Pike and part of Overlook Park, the Overlook Dog Park is managed by Manheim Township. Leashes are optional, but diligently cleaning up what’s been left behind is always a good idea.
Some veterinarians recommend that domestic dogs be walked 20 minutes twice every day.
“I don’t believe there are too many (dog parks) in the county,” said Harry Norton, Manheim Township’s adult and family program manager. “Just like anybody, dogs need exercise to burn off energy and just for their overall health. At the dog park, some people will stay for 10 minutes, and some will stay for an hour. But not all dogs are dog-park dogs.”
The 5-acre Overlook Dog Park is divided into three distinct areas: a common area for all dogs, an area for dogs under 30 pounds and an area for dogs over 30 pounds. The dog park boasts about 700 members, and approximately 70% of them are residents of Manheim Township.
“It’s a fun place. People come and enjoy it,” said Norton. “The park’s mission is to provide a safe area for dogs and their owners, give people an opportunity to unleash their dogs and, when appropriate, mingle with other dogs and their owners. We just want people and dogs to enjoy the area.”
Overlook Dog Park membership rates vary based upon residency, with a discount for Manheim Township residents. The dog park uses a key fob system to provide entry into the park, and all dogs must be licensed and vaccinated.
Overlook is a dawn-to-dusk dog park. There are 17 rules governing the use of the dog park.
“I think the activity there is just about right,” said Norton.
“From 6:30 to 8:30 (a.m.), we get a lot of heavy use. During the day, it’s much lighter, as far as activity goes. Then from 4 to 7:30 (p.m.), it’s packed again.” Through the efforts of the local civic organization Manheim Township Dog Owners Group (MTDOG), Overlook Dog Park opened in 2006 with 250 members. By the end of 2016, MTDOG had disbanded,

It’s Fastnacht Time At Holy Trinity
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Making fastnachts at Holy Trinity Catholic Church is an exact science. Sort of. There are specific steps required in making the treats, but because each one is handmade, no two are alike, said Betty Mahan, a member of the fastnacht committee at the church.
“There is a correct way to roll the dough,” Mahan explained. “It’s not like rolling dough at home. You don’t flour the dough. You only flour the board and the pin. You don’t turn the dough over. You relax the dough by lifting if off the board.” The dough rises twice - once overnight before it’s rolled out and once after rolling - before the treats are fried. She noted that the resulting fastnacht is unique, adding, “I’ve never had any that taste like ours.”
Holy Trinity’s annual fastnacht sale will begin on Monday, Feb. 20. Sales will continue Tuesday, Feb. 21, and Wednesday, Feb. 22, followed by Mondays and Wednesdays through March 15.
The fastnacht sale started as a project to raise funds to build a new church. While the current bake will produce more than 5,000 dozen fastnachts, the sale began as a small endeavor, noted volunteer Kathleen Lutz.
“It started out with only one or two days of sales,” said Lutz, who has been volunteering with the bake since the 1970s. While the original recipe is the same, she noted that some things have been tweaked. “We’ve

and the operation and maintenance of Overlook Dog Park was turned over to Manheim Township.
“We operate 13 parks throughout the township, and there are a lot of folks who walk their dogs in those parks,” said Norton. “People need to know that the dog park is there. It’s open to the public. It’s a big, grassy area. It’s a place where dogs can run and enjoy the open space.”

found easier ways to do things over the years,” she said. “Everybody has good ideas. Some work and some don’t.”
The sale is still a fundraiser for the church, with proceeds used for parish projects and to support Our Lady of the Angels Catholic School. Members of St. Peter Catholic Church in Columbia also assist with the sale, said St. Peter member George Overmeyer. “This is a ‘fun’ raiser more than a fundraiser,” he added. “We all have a lot of fun.”
Volunteers are needed to help with the bakes, with shifts available starting at 4 a.m. for people who want to help roll the dough. Experience is not required, said volunteer Karen Sahd. “There’s always somebody around who knows the correct way to do things,” she commented.
The Cowboys: Music of the American West
Sunday, March 19th •
Mahan noted that working at 4 a.m. is not required. “People can give an hour of time or help when they can,” she said. “We need second shift people and cleanup people, too.”
Fastnachts are available by the dozen, either glazed or plain. The committee members estimate that 75% of orders are for glazed treats. “You don’t even need to look in the bag to know if they are glazed or not,” volunteer Jim Knapp said. “It’s evident by the weight of the bag because we use so much glaze.”
Orders will be taken for fastnachts online only until sold out. To place an order, visit www.holytrinitycolumbiapa.co m. Doors will open at 10 a.m. each day for pickup at the side entrance of the school, 404 Cherry St., Columbia. Orders not picked up by 1 p.m. will be resold on a first-come, firstserved basis. To volunteer with the fastnacht bake, call the parish office at 717-684-2711.

GOTR Helps Girls Reach Developmental Finish Line
BY JEFF FALK
All phases of development are important. But it seems that the stage between the third and eighth grades may be especially critical in the growth of young women.
That’s where Girls on the Run (GOTR) steps in and helps girls put their collective best foot forward. GOTR’s mission is to help adolescent females become more social, more confident and more emotionally aware.
“We address the whole girl,” said Jennifer West, program director for GOTR of Lancaster. “Girls are facing so many critical decisions at this stage. We help girls with friendships, resolving conflicts, reaching goals, overcoming obstacles and asking for advice.”
“We hear girls say, ‘I’m not good enough. I’m not tall enough. I’m not smart enough,’” continued West. “We tell them, ‘No, you want to be yourself.’ We help girls find their star power. We help girls make good choices.”
West emphasized that GOTR is more than simply a running program, but an after-school, community
program. “You can hop, jump and skip, as long as you’re moving forward,” she said.
GOTR of Lancaster conducts two 90-minute meetings each week for 10 weeks, during both the spring and fall seasons. Registration for the spring 2023 season will begin Wednesday, Feb. 15.
Meetings are conducted by volunteer coaches in every school district in Lancaster and Lebanon counties, as well as at churches and social organizations like the YMCA. Last spring, GOTR served 960 local residents, and in the fall, the program’s participants numbered around 560. This spring, GOTR of Lancaster is shooting for 1,100 participants, 80 teams and 450 volunteer coaches.
“We’re really dependent on finding people with love for Girls on the Run,” said West.
GOTR’s program separates
its girls into two groups by age. The course focuses on participants learning about themselves first, then learning about cooperation and finally learning about their communities.
This year’s spring GOTR program will be capped on Saturday, May 20, at Franklin & Marshall College with its annual 5K run, which is expected to draw 3,000 participants, running buddies, coaches and spectators.
“We started out with 25 girls and two teams,” said West. “It’s 14 years later, and we feel like Girls on the Run has become a household name.”
Lancaster is one of 200 councils of the international GOTR program. In 2017, GOTR of Lancaster incorporated Lebanon County as part of its reach.
Since its inception, GOTR of Lancaster has served nearly 19,000 participants.
“Now we have girls
who have graduated from college coming back and they’re like a bridge to the older people,” said West. “We’re a lot more sure of ourselves. We know it’s successful. We know it’s impactful. We know it’s making a difference in people’s lives.”
To register for GOTR’s spring session, visit www.gotrlancaster.org, email jwest@gotrlancaster.org or call 717-869-5655. There is a fee to register, based on income.

Hempfield Boys’ Swimming Wins Section Crown
BY ARA GRIGORIAN
The sport of swimming is an individual sport.
You’re in your lane, using nearly every muscle in your body to propel yourself forward at a super pace, adhering to the style of swimming for your given race - backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly....
Swimming is also a team sport. Not only so within a foursome of swimmers representing the same school in a relay, but also how the team points add up for the final team tally.
On Monday, in a meet that would ultimately decide the 2023 Section One champions for both the boys’ and girls’ teams of the two schools, Hempfield faced archrival Manheim Township.
The Knights, holding a slim sixpoint lead going into the boys’ 400yard freestyle relay, the final event of the meet, were unable to claim first place. However, the “team sport” factor came in as the secondand third-place finishers, gave Hempfield enough points to edge MT 95-91.
“Andrew Gates, Jack Root, Ryan Taylor and Ivan Vitko finished second,” Hempfield coach Casey Lear explained. Will Russell, Arden McHugh, Kiran George and Jonathan Tsang took third in the same relay.
“We had a lot of guys that had an excellent meet,” Lear said. “Luke Roettger won the 100 butterfly and dropped 1.5 seconds.
“Jack Root and Ryan Taylor got first and second in the 50 free against a good Township swimmerRyan Maietta.”
“There were some really good times for both teams,” Dan Graybill, the MT head coach, said.
Also in the boys’ meet Tyson Johnson won the 1-meter diving with 181.05 points. George won the 100 breaststroke.
While the boys’ team claimed Section One, the girls’ team came up just short in a 99-87 MT victory and a Blue Streaks section title.
Hempfield’s Lillian Farmer and Carol Fabian won the 200- and 500free events, respectively. Farmer also took the 100 backstroke while Hannah Groff scored 187.7 in the diving to win that event.
“We came close but were a few points short in the diving,” said Graybill. “We were winning a lot of events, but not many seconds and thirds. We still managed to win the meet.”
As for the rivalry between the schools, Lear said, “There is no better competition for us than Manheim Township. They put it all in the pool. The kids from the two teams know each other so well. They’re competitive but also respectful of each other.”
BOYS’ BASKETBALL
The boys’ basketball team stayed unbeaten against LancasterLebanon League competition, defeating Penn Manor and McCaskey in its most recent games, and claimed the Section One crown.
The Black Knights raised their league record to 8-0 by topping Penn Manor 52-45 at home on Friday, January 27.
The Comets outscored the Knights by eight points in the final period, but Hempfield held on, improving to 16-2 overall.
Miguel Pena canned three treys, went a perfect 6-for-6 at the free throw line, and finished with a game-high 19 points. Chase Calabretta poured in 13 and Kamyn Lawrence tallied 10.
In their close 74-71 road win on Wednesday, February 1, the Knights survived a second half in which McCaskey outscored them 46-34.
Pena poured in 32 points. Lawrence (19) and Calabretta (14) also added to the offensive.
WRESTLING
Braden Edwards and Seamus Mack claimed first place in their weight classes on Saturday, January 28 as Hempfield competed in the LL League Wrestling Championships at Manheim Township. The two-day event started on Friday and netted the Black Knights the top honor in
team points, landing them atop the team standings for the third time in the last four years.
“It was a pretty tight team race,” said head coach Shane Mack.
Seamus Mack pinned his way through the 127pound weight class. He needed only 20 seconds to deck John Martin of Lancaster Catholic. In only 32 seconds, Jason Brooks of Cedar Crest found himself on his back.
The Hempfield junior won an 8-2 decision over Conestoga Valley’s Luke Morley before defeating Owen Lehman of Northern Lebanon in a first-period pin for the championship match.
“The kid he faced in the finals is an accomplished wrestler,” said Mack. “The team race was on the line. The kid shot in on him and Seamus is a good wrestler defensively. He got the cradle and was able to counter.”
Indeed, the team race was on the line. Hempfield edged Northern Lebanon 172 to 166.5. The likes of Lehman finishing second, Conor Leonard taking third at 160 and Aaron Seidel winning 107 helped the Vikings stay on Hempfield’s heels.
Edwards was the 145-pound champ. He too opened with a quick pin, defeating Alex Hondru of Central in 47 seconds.
“Braden had an outstanding tournament,” Mack said. “He is wrestling very well. His opponent was also a state qualifier. Braden needed the win to seal the team trophy. He kept his composure and ended up wrestling a very good match.”
Edwards defeated Aiden Swann of Cocalico with a fall 3:50 into the title bout.
Caleb Mussmon came up short in the 285-pound finale, losing 3-2 to Donegal’s Nicholai Brotzman. In the 2022 league finals, Mussmon edged Brotzman 1-0.
“They are probably going to see each other again at some point,” Mack said, hinting at a possible District Three or PIAA rematch between the two talented wrestlers.
At 114, Michael Karpathios finished fifth, winning by forfeit in that final consolation match over Gavin Boland of Penn Manor, the wrestler who had pinned Karpathios in the semis.
“Boland got hurt,” Mack explained. “Michael has been wrestling well lately. There were a couple of tough kids in that weight class.”
Karpathios started by pinning Blake Shenk of Cocalico and registered a first-period pin in the consolations. He majored Elijah Myers of L-S by a 144 count until a loss in the consi semis put him in the fifthplace match.
Kam Fickes took fourth at 139 losing a 5-1 decision in the third-place bout with Catholic’s Gavin Badger.
“He lost a close match in the semis,” Mack said, referring to a 52 defeat. “He’s very knowledgeable. Sometimes it’s hard to come back in the wrestlebacks. You have to have a short memory and move on.”
“Zy McCain-Murray had a really close match in the semis,” Mack said of his 133-pound wrestler. McCain-Murray finished sixth.
“He sustained an injury and tried to compete the next day,” Mack explained. “He had to forfeit down to sixth place.”
Sutton Schopf, a junior, finished eighth. All these little things make
a difference in a tight team race. Him making it to the podium.
Nicky Bruno lost to Adam Mitchell of Octorara in the second round only to come back with a vengeance in his first consolation match, pinning Lebanon’s Edgar Velazquez in 11 seconds. Bruno then came out on the short end of a tough 2-1 decision to Noah Templin of Manheim Central - the eventual seventh-place finisher at 215.
GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
Carrying a 17-5 lead into the second quarter, the girls’ basketball team cruised to a 55-26 win at Penn Manor in Section One action, Friday, January 27.
Sophia Ott poured in 18 points, with a pair of treys. Lauren Moffatt (13 pts) was 4-for-5 at the foul line.
Hempfield improved to 9-10 with a 56-49 defeat of Exeter on Saturday. In the non-league contest, the Knights led by only three points heading into the fourth.
Ott and Moffatt each scored 17 while Nevaeh Ramirez finished with 14 points.
Hempfield improved to 4-5 in the league, posting a dominant 7337 home win over McCaskey on February 1.
Ott poured in four treys and netted 22 points. Autumn Cook scored 20 while Moffatt added another 15.

New Program Aims To Reduce Food Waste
Lancaster Central Market, 23 N. Market St., Lancaster, has launched the Kathleen L. Peck After Market program to reduce food waste, improve community health, and honor the memory of Peck. Designed to ensure nutritious food ends up on local tables, not in landfills, market standholders offer free goods that will expire before the next market day. After Market is open to the public and operates on Tuesdays and Saturdays from 2:45 to 3:15 p.m. Shoppers are asked to browse the tables in a single-file line and take only three to five items at first. Shoppers may return to the end of the line as often as they wish. After Market shoppers should bring their own bags, as none will be
provided. Before the pandemic, the Central Market Trust partnered with local nonprofits to pick up food donations directly from the market house. Due to staff constraints and varying donation amounts, Trust staff members sought other ways to reduce waste and bridge the gap to ensure that food flowing into the Central Market makes it onto kitchen tables.
The family of Peck helped launch After Market in her memory after she passed away suddenly in 2022. Mike Peck, Kathy’s husband, noted that his family has bought much of its food from Central Market.
Melissa Siwiec (standing, far right), Central Market Trust executive director, met with (seated) Kathleen W. Livingston (standing, from far left), Mike Peck, David Noll, Kathy Noll, Rick Noll, Melissa Siwiec and (not pictured) Pam Noll, wife of Rick, to celebrate the new Kathleen L. Peck After Market program.

For the third year in a row, the Giant Company has announced the launch of its Feeding School Kids initiative and its $250,000 commitment to kick off the program. From now through Tuesday, Feb. 28, customers at Giant, Martin’s and Giant Heirloom Market stores are invited to round up their grocery purchases to the nearest dollar or convert their CHOICE points into a donation to support public school district food programs.
Giant launched the Feeding School Kids program in 2021 to address the issue of childhood hunger through-
out local public school communities. Together with its customers, Giant has raised more than $4.8 million to date to help ensure no child goes hungry at school or at home.
Through the Feeding School Kids initiative, school districts have been able to support meal programs and address food insecurity through activities ranging from supplying backpacks with weekend food to clearing outstanding student lunch debt to building on-campus food pantries. School districts in Pennsylvania have benefited from the program.

Fulton Bank has helped facilitate more than $968 million in loans to more than 5,700 homebuyers under the Closing Cost Assistance Program, and that cumulative total is on
track to hit $1 billion in loans in 2023. In addition to homebuyer loans, the bank has donated more than $8 million in grants to make purchasing a home more affordable for low and moderate-income buyers.

Beginning with Eve from the Book of Genesis and ending in December with Mary, the mother of Jesus, the group will study 11 of the women in the biblical ancestry of Jesus. The study will be facilitated by the Rev. Arica Demme, who has been assisting pastor Mark Chavez at Reformation since January 2022. Each month’s installment of the study can stand on its own, so attendees can join at any time during the year. There is no cost for the study.
For more information, contact 717-947-4248. Information about the church is available at www.reformation-nalc.org.
Eric Resch, Lititz; Paul Davey, Lancaster; and Thomas Begin, Lancaster, finished first, second and third in the race with times of 20 minutes, 10 seconds; 20:17; and 21:10, respectively. He added that the truck will go a long way to increase access
to fresh, nutritious food for families in Power Packs’ 90 partner schools in Lancaster and Lebanon counties.
The truck will be operational immediately and will be used in deliveries to Power Packs affiliates and partner schools as well as pickups from food donors and produce farmers. Last year, Power Packs provided nearly 400,000 healthy meals to families struggling with hunger. More information about the organization
