Local artist nominated for award

For the 2022 Central Pennsylvania Music Awards (CPMAs), Keri Edwards of Mountville was nominated in the Best Female Artist category. Each year, the Central Pennsylvania Music Hall of Fame hosts the CPMAs to recognize top local talent, and the organization will host the 2023 induction ceremony for award recipients at the Hershey Theatre in March.

Edwards grew up in Mountville and graduated from Hempfield High School in 1998. For the last 23 years, she has lived all over the world with her family, due to her husband’s career in the Air Force. Although Edwards has been writing and performing music since she was young, she took a break from playing shows while her husband’s career took their family from place to place. The Edwards family even spent time living in Germany and Italy and moved back to Mountville last year. “Once we settled in, I was ready to start doing gigs again,” Edwards said. “I’ve only been gigging since this past summer, but it’s taken off and is going really well.

Edwards was introduced to the music world by her father, Stu Huggens. Huggens toured the country with his band when Edwards was a child and taught her how to sing, write and play music. “I grew up watching him make music for a living. I’ve always been playing music, even if not in a professional capacity,” Edwards said.

Early in her career, Edwards would fly to Nashville to work on music with her father and other artists. She became familiar with the local scene and collaborated with labels and other songwriters, and even had one of her songs picked up for a publishing deal. Due to complications surrounding international travel in the early 2000s and health problems she was experiencing, Edwards became less busy in the music industry and instead shifted her focus to her family at home. Although Edwards was less involved in the Nashville scene, she remained musically active by perf orming at church and writing songs on her own.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Edwards became involved with

Nashville Songwriters Association International, which operates chapters around the world for musicians to collaborate on their work. Edwards wrote songs with artists from all over via online Zoom meetings and befriended a group of artists based in Michigan. Edwards and her colleagues in Michigan started Power Pack Studios; their mission is to empower women in music through strength-based collaboration. The collective of artists assist each other with writing and producing songs and learning about different aspects of the music industry. “When we’re working together, we’re able to accomplish more than we would without one another. It’s been a whole lot of fun,” Edwards said.

Edwards said that she is thrilled to be back in the music scene and she is excited for this new chapter of her career. Edwards put out two singles over the past year: “I Am Woman” and “Releasing You,” both of which are available on all major streaming platforms alongside her previous releases. Community event to return to Mountville Girl Scouts celebrate World Thinking Day

Each year, the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) celebrates World Thinking Day, which this year is Wednesday, Feb. 22. For nearly 100 years, Girl Scouts around the world have used the holiday to discuss how they can help others and show gratitude for volunteers and parents who make Girl Scouts possible.

On Feb. 13, members of the Conestoga River Girl Scouts from

School of Irish Dance in Lancaster will perform. Each nonprofit organization in attendance will provide a free children’s activity, and a bounce house will be available to kids as well. Nonprofits such as the Mountville Lions Club, Girl Scouts, Hempfield Mini-THON and the Froelich Foundation will have booths at the event, and even the Easter Bunny is scheduled to make an appearance. Parking will be available by donation, and it will be facilitated by the Mountville Fire Company.

Preschool program announces registration

The Hempfield High School (HHS) Preschool Laboratory program will hold registration for its 2023-24 school year preschool program beginning on Wednesday, March 1, at noon. Registration will be offered at www.hempfieldsd.org/preschool.

In the HHS Preschool Laboratory Program, high school students work with preschool children in a student-teacher capacity. Each week has a designated theme, and the high school students are responsible for creating a lesson and planning activities, games, and songs to carry out the learning experience. Guests and appropriate activities are often included to enhance the learning experiences for children.

The two-day programs for 3- and 4-year-olds will be held on Mondays and Fridays, either in the morning from 7:50 to 10:20 a.m. or in the afternoon from 11:15 a.m. to 1:40 p.m. Children enrolling in this program must be 3 years of age by Sept. 1.

pandemic. Kalbach and Jacquelynne Hess, the founders of MJ Squad, decided that an accessible community event in Mountville would benefit both local businesses and nonprofits, so they began organizing it.

MJ Squad also organizes other community events that share the same mission as the Mountville Community Event; throughout the year, Hess and Kalbach help to offer holiday markets and events at the Tanger Outlets.

Kalbach and Hess started MJ Squad over the COVID-19 pandemic as a way to help small businesses and business owners in the area. Both Kalbach and Hess were raised by small business owners and each became an entrepreneur prior to founding MJ Squad. “We had no idea this is something that was so missing when we started,” Kalbach said. “We’re humbled and grateful to provide this type of support for small business, after growing up and watching our parents navigate that.”

Wayside Presbyterian Church, 600 Stony Battery Road, Landisville, will offer a reflective service on Ash Wednesday, Feb. 22, at 6:30 p.m. The service of Ashes and Communion will feature ashes from last year’s Palm Sunday parade palms, mixed with olive oil. Worshipers will have the option of Pastor Steve imposing a cross of ashes on their forehead or the back of their hand, with the option of self-imposing ashes using a rubber cross-shaped stamp.

Communion will also be celebrated at the 45-minute service, either with wafers dipped into the common chalice or with individually prepackaged elements. Scripture, prayer, and a brief message introducing Wayside’s new sermon series, “Into the Wild,” will focus on Jesus’ time in the wilderness being tempted by Satan. Music will include a choir anthem and bell choir selection.

Wayside will offer additional activities during the Lenten season and Holy Week, including Palm Sunday, April 2; Maundy Thursday, April 6, and Easter Sunday, April 9. The community is welcome to attend.

Knights top LMH, Warwick; advance to LL final

The Hempfield boys’ basketball team claimed the Section One title in the Lancaster-Lebanon League and headed into the league playoffs as one of the favorites to bring the trophy to Landisville.

On Monday, February 13, the Black Knights topped Lancaster Mennonite 63-53 in a quarterfinals round game at Hempfield with Michael Pena pouring in 25 points.

With a 25-11 run in the second stanza, the Knights (20-2) gained the momentum for the rest of the game.

Camden Hurst tied Pena for the top scoring honors in the game by scoring 25 for Mennonite. Hurst had a pair of three-point shots. Pena made three on the night. He was one of four Hempfield players to score in double digits. Kamyn Lawrence added 12 while Michael Hester and Ben Troyer scored 11 and 10, respectively.

The victory moved the Knights into the semifinals where they faced a tough Warwick team at Conestoga Valley on Wednesday, February 15.

The Warriors came into this game with a similar fate as the Knightsthat regardless of the outcome of the match, they were headed for the district playoffs. Warwick was ranked fifth in the District Three 5A rankings while Hempfield is ranked third in class 6A behind Reading and Cumberland Valley.

It was 23-20 Warwick at halftime. The Knights made crucial shots, including Chase Calabretta’s free throws in the final minute of

the game, winning 49-43. Calabretta (14 pts) also had a three-point field goal on the night.

Pena led the team in scoring with 17 points.

Trevor Evans and Caleb Johnsen each scored 11 to lead the Warriors, who fell to 16-7.

Manheim Central won the other semifinal game at Conestoga Valley on Wednesday, defeating Cedar Crest 49-46.

SWIMMING & DIVING

Carol Fabian accounted for 20 of her team’s 184 points as Hempfield claimed the L-L League Swimming & Diving Championship on Saturday, February 11. The Black Knights pulled away from Manheim Township, winning by a 184-161 margin.

Meanwhile, the Hempfield boys’ team finished a very close second to Manheim Township with the Blue Streaks posting a 191-187 margin of victory.

The two-day event was held at the Roy G. Snyder Natatorium at Wilson High School on Friday and Saturday, February 10-11.

The girls’ championship was their first in 12 years, head coach Casey Lear pointed out.

“We tied Manheim Township in 2011, but it was the girls’ first league title since 2009,” Lear explained. “Going into this year, I knew the girls were contenders for the title.”

Fabian’s contributions included being on the winning 400-yard freestyle relay foursome with Lillian Farmer, Anna Koger and Micah Wiglesworth as they posted a time of 3:39.58.

Fabian, Caroline Schweigert, Emily Taylor and Kendall Stringe also medaled in the relays, earning fourth in the 200 medley relay.

Koger, Taylor, Farmer and Wiglesworth were second (1:41.96) in the 200 free relay.

Wiglesworth and Koger finished fifth and seventh, respectively, in the 50 freestyle.

“Micah has been an amazing competitor since her freshman year,” Lear said. “She has one more year ahead of her. She dropped 1.23 seconds to earn fifth in the 100 free.

“Anna Koger is a championship swimmer through and through,” Lear added. “In big moments, she

comes in and performs when it matters the most, which is difficult to do in sprint events - her specialty. She dropped 1.51 seconds to earn ninth place in the 100 free.”

Fabian’s individual event accomplishments included a fifth-place finish in the 500 free - an event in which Lucy Bishop took eighth. Fabian and Farmer went stroke for stroke in the 200 free with third-place finisher Fabian edging her teammate 2:00.70 to 2:00.71. Stringe placed seventh in the 200 free.

“Kendall is a sophomore, who has a very promising career ahead of her,” Lear said. “She is a tough competitor. In the 200 free, she dropped 3.99 seconds to earn seventh and dropped 1:02.01 in the 100 back.”

Farmer came through, earning fourth (1:00.21) in the 100 back. Schweigert (1:00.88), who was the seventh-place finisher in the 200 IM, took fifth in the backstroke. Schweigert also placed 13th in the 500 free.

Taylor took sixth (1:11.28) in the 100 breaststroke. Junior Maya Trowbridge finished fifth (54.90) in the 100 free with Koger taking 12th in the event.

The Hempfield leaders in the boys’ championship included Toby Marco, Jack Root, Ryan Taylor, and Kiran Georrge.

“Ryan Taylor, much like his sister Emily, is a fierce competitor and a tough athlete,” said Lear. “He will always rise to the occasion to help his team.”

Taylor contributed 15 points as he dropped 1.02 seconds to earn seventh in the 100 free. Taylor also finished sixth in the 50 free - an event in which Root was the winner and Marco finished seventh.

Root took fifth in the 100 free at a 48.49 pace.

“Jack Root was our top performer, scoring 19 points,” Lear pointed out. “He places a lot of pressure on himself to perform well, always looking for ways to improve

and get faster.”

Taylor, Marco, and Root joined Andrew Gates for a second-place finish in the 400 free relay. Root, Taylor, Marco and Jase Colino won the 200 free relay at 1:28.62, dropping 3.08 seconds.

The 200 medley team of Colino, George, Andrew Gates and Luke Roettger took third.

Roettger (56.98) placed seventh in the 100 fly as Marco took 10th in the event. Gates and Roettger were seventh (56.96) and ninth (58.02) in the 100 backstroke where Colino earned 10th place.

Ivan Vitko contributed an eighthplace finish in the 500 free with Will Russell taking ninth.

Colino was sixth (2:05.01) in the 200 IM as Russell took 10th place.

“The league title was not something we even considered for the boys’ team until we got some steam under us this year,” Lear said. “They competed as a team and as a family with every individual working their absolute hardest.

“It was tied going into the final relay,” Lear added, referring to the close finish. “But we clinched our section and have a young team that will be stronger in the next few years.”

BOWLING

Hempfield, the Section One winner in L-L League bowling with a record of 60-31, faced off against Northern Lebanon, the Section Four runner-up on Wednesday, February 8 at Rocky Springs.

The Black Knights came away with a first-round victory over the Vikings. Derick Keller rolled games of 241 and 244 as the team totaled 942 and 1025 in the 2-0 win.

Hempfield and Penn Manor squared off in the semifinals. Defending league champion Hempfield could not get past Penn Manor. The Knights did beat the Comets 980-889 in the first game. The Comets came back to win 939-840 and 859-825 only to lose to eventual champ Elizabethtown.

World Thinking Day frompg 1

“We look at World Thinking Day as a day of appreciation and thanking everyone -volunteers, parents and leaders,” said Linda Davis, service unit lead for Conestoga River Girl Scouts. “We’re thinking about them and how much we appreciate all that they do for Girl Scouting.”

The girls learned about each of the five World Centers and made a charm pin for each location. They

received five charms, and each charm represented the national flower for each of the World Centers’ countries. The program began with a scavenger hunt and concluded with a sing-along.

Each World Thinking Day is given a theme by WAGGGS. This year, the theme of the holiday is “Our World, Our Peaceful Future.” To earn their World Thinking Day award, Girl Scouts

will explore different issues that affect the environment and learn how to secure a viable future for girls around the world. During their meeting, members of Conestoga River Girl Scouts discussed recycling and received an informational handout on sustainability. “When I asked how many girls recycle at home, I saw almost every hand go up,” Davis said.

“It’s great that they recognize the importance of it and saving our Earth.”
