Hempfield Thespians To Stage “Mary Poppins” By Dayna M. Reidenouer

Hempfield High School students, with the addition of one Landisville Intermediate Center (LIC) fifth-grader, are striving to make their production of Disney and Cameron Mackintosh’s “Mary Poppins” “practically perfect in every way” when it is performed on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, March 1, 2, and 3. Music director Alan Mudrick said that the more than 100 students involved in the production are striving for excellence. The older members of the cast are excited to return to the stage for a performance that will have some memorable elements. “We got approval to use the original choreography for ‘Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious,’” said senior Katie White, who portrays Mary Poppins. “It’s super cool that we’re dedicated and able to

take on that caliber of work.” For the younger members of the group playing lead characters, the quality of the production and its participants is inspiring. “It’s amazing to be a part of this. It’s a bit surreal,” said freshman Noah Felty, who is playing Bert. He noted that he is feeling some pressure due to his age and his role, but he is enjoying the process. “I’m not a dancer, so it’s been cool to pick it up,” Noah continued. LIC fifth-grader Wilder Long was tapped to play Michael Banks, the younger brother of Jane Banks, portrayed by freshman Camryn Ackerman. The pair terrorize nannies before Mary Poppins intervenes. “It’s shocking how talented they are,” Wilder said of his costars. “When you watch a show, you just see them once,” he explained. “But seeing them often in person (at See “Mary Poppins” pg 3

to hold a Fish Fry every Friday during Lent. The event quickly became popular not only with parishioners but also with other community members. The Fish Fry has been held annually for the past 40 years. The menu has grown and changed, but it still features a variety of fish platters and other non-meat dishes prepared by the women of the parish with assistance from the men, who help serve

and clean up each week. Included in the price of the fish platters are coleslaw, macaroni and cheese, a vegetable, french fries and coffee or tea. Homemade soups, weekly specials, a la carte items and desserts are also available. Popular items include fish sandwiches and the baked haddock platter. Pictured on front:

All meetings are open to the public and are informal and free of charge. For more information, readers may visit the historical society’s Facebook page or call Lynn at 717-664-3808.

Garden Club Sets Meeting Town and Country Garden Club of Lancaster will welcome guest speaker Petra Page-Mann on Wednesday, March 6, at 7 p.m. to speak on “Fruition Seeds: Organic Seed for the Northeast.” The meeting will take place in the Bachman Center at Homestead Village, 633 Community Way, Lancaster. “Mary Poppins” from pg 1 rehearsals), you can see how consistently good they are.” While Wilder has to act “8 and bratty,” as he put it, Camryn has somewhat of a role reversal. “I’m used to being the younger one in the family,” she said. Jane and Michael act out in order to gain their parents’ attention, and they show growth through the course of the tale. “(Jane) continues to ask questions to get to know something,” Camryn said. “At the end, she’s more caring.” Senior Erin Mary Lynch as Miss Andrews attempts to put up with the Banks children’s shenanigans until she can no longer stand it. “I’m thoroughly enjoying playing the villain. She’s more stuck-up and snooty. She definitely comes across as mean to the children,” Erin Mary said. “She scares them.” “…And the father,” added senior DJ Esbenshade, who portrays the Banks patriarch, George. Discussing his character, DJ said, “He has one fun dancing moment, but

he’s a very serious person. I’m the total opposite of him.” Winifred, played by senior Hannah Rau, is George’s wife and Jane and Michael’s mother. “She has a lot on her plate. She cares about her kids, but not deeply,” Hannah observed. “Toward the end, she becomes a motherly figure that steps up and takes charge and shows the kids she’s someone to be proud of.” And what about the titular nanny herself? “Mary’s not a role I’ve ever envisioned for myself,” Katie said. “I have to stay period and prim and proper,” Katie remarked. “Mary always has an underlying meaning. I have to come to rehearsal knowing why she says what she does (so I can portray her well).” The stage production is different from the movie, Hannah said, and includes additional songs not in the 1964 film. Stage

director/choreographer Cody Smith shared that before approving of a stage adaptation, “Mary Poppins” author P.L. Travers insisted that more of the books in her series be included in the script. This has resulted in a richer, more educational plot, he said. The show will be performed at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, March 1 and 2, and at 2:30 p.m. on March 2 and on Sunday, March 3, in the high school’s Performing Arts Center, 200 Stanley Ave., Landisville. A senior citizen preview performance is slated for Thursday, Feb. 28, at 7:30 p.m., and attendance will be free to all residents of Hempfield School District age 65 years and older. Tickets are not required for Feb. 28, but are necessary for admission to all other performances and may be purchased at www.hempfieldsd.org/tickets; at the box office on Wednesday, Feb. 27, from 3:30 to 5 p.m.; and at the box office 45 minutes prior to show time.

When Emily Kline and Melissa Faller, the founders of Emme Dance Collective, work together to create a dance concert, they consider who might be in the audience. “When we create a show, we think of the dad in the audience who may not understand it,” said Kline. “We want them to leave entertained,” she added. “If they were entertained, we feel we have accomplished something.” With that goal in mind, Kline and Faller plan to present “Bring Into Being,” the debut dance concert that will showcase the style and aesthetic associated with their contemporary company. The pieces in the show, which will be presented on Saturday, March 2, at 7:30 p.m. at the Leffler Chapel and Performance Center at Elizabethtown College, 1 Alpha Drive, Elizabethtown, will all be choreographed by Kline and Faller. The pieces will be performed by 10 company dancers, two apprentices, and a few students of Kline and

Faller. According to Faller, “Bring Into Being” is designed to introduce Emme Dance Collective to the community. Kline noted, “We thought we’d create a show that (demonstrates to the audience) who we are … as artists and as choreographers.” The show will include a mixture of new pieces and those created in the recent past. Kline pointed out that the nine pieces that will be included in the show will be performed in the style of contemporary dance, which includes techniques that pull from modern dance. “I would describe it as moving in the moment,” she said, adding that the music will be current and contemporary and even include lyrics. Faller added, “We try not to use music that is mainstream or recognizable because we’re trying to create something new, fresh, and different.” Kline noted that dances for the familyfriendly show have been kept intentionally short so that the performance moves quickly.

Costuming will include a variety of earth tones and jewel tones, and Faller described the dances as quick moving and engaging. “Our choreography could be described as colorful and upbeat,” said Kline. Faller and Kline, who first met when they attended school together in Manheim Township School District at the age of 6, both took lessons at a local dance studio and, following graduation, majored in dance at DeSales University in Center Valley. “In (college), we concentrated on different areas,” explained Kline, who noted that while she focused on choreography, Faller was more interested in performance. When they returned to Lancaster, they decided to start a dance company together, launching it at the end of June 2018. Emme Dance Collective is sponsored fiscally through Fractured Atlas in New York. Kline explained that a goal of the collective is to contribute to other local organizations. “Another focal point is trying to get involved (to give) back to the community,”

she said. “We aren’t just a performance group. We want to use our talents to give back.” On Feb. 2, the pair performed in Be the Change, an event that benefited S. June Smith Center. In addition to the taking part in the performance, Faller and Kline held two master dance classes in December and donated all the proceeds Be the Change. Tickets, which are necessary to attend the show, may be purchased at www.emmedancecollective.com. Tickets should also be available at the door.

Hess Will Co-Host Convention Hempfield High School senior Taylor Hess auditioned and was selected as the female master of ceremonies for the 15th annual Student Television Network National Convention in Seattle. Hess will co-host the event in March with Grayson Hardman, a student from Lone Peak High School in Utah.

Speaker Series from pg 1 “My oration is (on the topic that) capitalism is the best economic system; it rewards individualism,” Joey said. “I’m pretty nervous (about speaking to a large group of people). Why wouldn’t I be? This is God’s plan, (however). I’m delivering God’s message.” The doors to the venue will open at 5:30 p.m., and the event will start at 6 p.m. Two sets of tickets are available for purchase. One set includes dinner, and the other does not. Tickets must be purchased in advance at www.dayspringchristian.com or by calling the school at 717-285-2000. Myers noted that there will be an opportunity for attendees to invest in the future of Dayspring at the event, but the Remember America Speaker Series is not primarily a fundraiser. “It’s an extension of our mission,” Myers explained. “It’s an opportunity for us to speak into the community about the importance of the biblical foundation of our nation.”

Myers will serve as the facilitator, and Dayspring alumni Carley Evangelista Bilindabagabo, Class of 2009, and Matthew Valverde, Class of 2012, will assist in the dialogue. “It’s important to show what Dayspring is about,” said Lisa Becker, the school’s marketing director. “Including alumni will show how they have learned to think and reason.” Current students will also be part of the program. There were six wrestlers who qualified from the Hempfield squad, punching their tickets to Hershey for the District Three Class-AAA championships. The Black Knights had three wrestlers finish fourth in the District Three Section 2 sectionals, which were held at Hempfield on Friday and Saturday, February 15-16, two more who finished in third place as well as Reagan Lefevre’s second-place finish. All of which resulted in advancing them to Hersheypark Arena for the district championships. Lefevre competed at the 132-pound weight class. The freshman impressed everyone with his second-place finish at sectionals. At districts, Lefevre opened with a close match - one in which he came up short 4-2. He dominated the first consolation match, posting a 6-0 victory, but eventual fifth-place finisher Clay Baker of Spring Grove posted a pin

at the 4:58 mark of the consolation quarterfinals. In the sectionals a week prior, Lefevre muscled his way to a 16-1 technical fall against Riley Eckman of LampeterStrasburg in his first bout. He then posted an 8-5 victory over Bryce Buckman of Central Dauphin, earning a shot at the title match. Cade Zeamer of Manheim Central claimed the 132-pound championship, however, at sectionals and went on to place fourth in districts at Hershey. While Joel Dionne came up empty at districts, he did have a successful run at sectionals. After a first-round pin, he lost to the eventual 145 pound champ - Mitchell Arch of Central Dauphin. The junior was determined in the consolation matches, topping a formidable opponent in Logan Hess by an 8-6 score. He then outlasted Devan Lamb of Hershey by a 3-1 score and came up just short in the third-place match. Haydn Shreiner of Warwick prevailed 7-6. Ian Edwards had a fourth-place finish at 152 in the sectionals and went 1-2 at districts. His one win in districts came in the first round of the consolations where he notched a pin 4:40 into the match, while leading 15-5 at that point. He then suffered an 11-4 defeat that knocked him out of contention. In the sectionals, he had two losses at the hands of Central Dauphin’s Hunter Bentz. In a tough battle in the second round, the CD senior edged Edwards 7-6. Edwards went on to win 147 over Lampeter-Strasburg’s Nick Salgado and pinned Milton Hershey junior Jacob McMillen. His 8-2 defeat of E-town’s Cole Rice put him in the third-place match where Bentz came on to post a 10-4 victory. Chase Mathias (195) and Luke Dreyer (220) each earned third place at sectionals while Zac Bicevskis had a fourth-place finish at 285. Mathias opened the districts with an 8-0 win but lost in the second round on a technical fall. He was undeterred, however, winning two consolation bouts - decisions by 7-0

and 3-1 margins. Forced to battle for fifth place, Mathias doubled up Penn Manor’s T.J. Keener by a 10-5 score. In the sectionals, Mathias had lost to Keener, the eventual second-place finisher, after posting a pin over Donegal’s Joel Grillo. In the consis, Mathias rebounded nicely with a 13-5 major decision and a third-place match pin, taking down Andrew Burd of Hershey at 3:48. Dreyer registered a pin to open his sectionals quest. In fact, his pin was against the same opponent - Darius O’Neil-Taylor of Milton Hershey - whom he defeated to take third place. In between, he suffered a 15-4 loss to champ Marques Holten, and defeated Shaneef Carter of Solanco by a narrow 3-2 margin before facing O’Neil-Taylor and posting a 14-6 victory. T.J. Moore of Cedar Crest, who finished second in the Section One sectionals at Governor Mifflin, narrowly got past Dreyer with a 3-2 decision at districts. Dreyer came up short in another close battle in the consolations, losing to Carlisle senior Dylan White 7-4. Bicevskis suffered a technical fall and then a close 2-0 defeat in the consolations at districts. He was coming off a strong sectionals tournament that included back-to-back pins in the consis and a close 4-2 loss to Zac Shelley of Lampeter-Strasburg in the third-place bout. This all came after another close loss - a 6-3 setback to Jaden Baylor of CD. Also putting forth a strong effort in sectionals was Luke Kramer at 120 pounds. He opened with a second-period pin, defeating Central Dauphin’s Liam Kennedy. Following a 15-5 loss to Jose Tirado of McCaskey, Kramer pinned Hershey’s Logan Kreamer in only 30 seconds. Third-place finisher Arik Harnish notched a pin, knocking Kramer into the fifth-place consolation match where he came

BOYS’ BASKETBALL In that match, he majored Elizabethtown freshman Wyatt

up short in a 15-9 decision. Cam Olson of Elizabethtown took fifth. Gio Luciano finished fifth in the 106-pound weight class at sectionals. He had three pins in the two-day championships, including one that took only 54 seconds to achieve. Luciano pinned Allyar Nassyrov of CD but suffered a 7-2 defeat at the hands of Manheim Township’s Micah Sams, the eventual third-place finisher. Luciano then proceeded to post pins against John Foltz of Palmyra (54 seconds) and Deatrich Moyer of Milton Hershey. Ethan Herr of Donegal worked a 7-2 decision in the next consolation match, forcing Luciano to battle for fifth place.

Mummaw 14-4. Dylan Bard and Gordy Hoover also finished sixth for the Knights at sectionals. Bard did so in the 160-pound bracket and Hoover at 182. Bard’s 6-2 win over CD’s Ethan Pae was followed by a tough 4-0 loss to eventual champ Austin Sauder. In the consolation semis, Bard suffered a close 5-3 loss to familiar foe - Kole Marley of Penn Manor. He came up short in the fifth-place match against Hershey’s Donte Hibbert in a 9-2 decision. Hoover opened with a 7-0 loss and had to battle back to the fifth-place match. He did so with a pin that required only 19 seconds of mat time, victimizing Hank Farrell of Manheim Township. He then earned a 4-2 victory over Donegal’s Cael Rapp before a loss to eventual third-place finisher Keegan McCord sent him to the fifth-place match where Nathaniel Mosey of Central Dauphin notched a pin.

Hempfield saw its season come to an end against Harrisburg, the fifth-ranked team in the district, in the opening round of Tuesday’s District Three Class 6A boys’ basketball playoffs. The 12th-seeded Knights entered the playoffs with a 13-9 mark, and traveled to the Kimber Gymnasium in Harrisburg. The Cougars held Hempfield to only two points in the second quarter, building a 23-9 halftime lead on the way to a 53-42 win. The Knights had a much stronger second half as Eli Washington led the squad with 12 points on the night. He drilled one three-point basket and made all three shots he was granted at the foul line. Adam Wernoch put up eight points while both Ryan Hilton and Austin Groft scored seven points.

Unique to the preview this year will be quilts and wall hangings made from submissions to the Charity Block Design Challenge through The Old Country Store in Intercourse and Jaftex Corporation, a fabric manufacturer in New York City. The Old Country Store won a Jaftex Facebook contest through the company’s CEO, Scott Fortunoff, and chose MCC and the Pennsylvania Relief Sale as the charity recipient. The store decided to hold an event, with Fortunoff as the main speaker, and paired it with the Charity Block Design Challenge, where registered participants received a mystery pair of fat-quarter fabrics beforehand from one of five featured designers from the corporation: Kaffe Fassett, Kim Diehl, Tula Pink, Tim Holtz, and William Morris. The corporation donated the fabrics. Participants were then asked to use the two fabrics they received to create a 10.5by-10.5-inch quilt block in any pattern. At an event on Nov. 29, 2018, at Shady Maple in East Earl, attendees voted on their favorites in five categories - best use of color, best pieced, best applique, best nontraditional, and people’s choice - with winners receiving prizes. Winning blocks were sewn into individual wall hangings while many of the other submissions were made into sampler quilts. More than 150 blocks were submitted for the challenge. During the preview, quilt viewers will be invited to vote for their favorite quilt by donating money. Each cent counts as one vote and goes toward the Pennsylvania Relief Sale’s My Coins Count collection. This year’s collection will support MCC’s peacebuilding initiatives, which aim to give people the skills they need to work for peace and understanding, to speak out against injustices, and to build resilience through trauma healing. Preview visitors can also shop Quilter’s Corner for fabric, linens, spools, and related items, as well as upcycled items crafted from repurposed materials by volunteers. Used books and other contributed items will also be available for purchase by donation. In addition, tours of the Material Resources Center warehouse will be offered. The warehouse serves as a collection point in the U.S. for the receiving, packing, and shipping of material resources donated by people responding to aid requests from MCC

in southern Lancaster County. As a result of the group’s efforts, streambanks are holding their shape, water temperatures are dropping, and aquatic life is thriving. “A buffer of 100 feet filters out all pollutants,” Kutz explained, adding that hardwood trees planted in riparian buffers even a few dozen feet wide make an impact on streambank stability. DTU maintains a nursery at the Millport Conservancy for use in future projects. “We will have thousands of trees to plant (in buffers) in the next three or four years,” Kutz said. “Even after all the flooding we had this year, the (creek banks) where we planted are still there. The others are blown out,” fundraising committee chair Ruth Roulston reported. The group is thankful to have received grants to cover the costs of its work. However, there are expenses involved in operating the chapter. Fundraising committee co-chair Barry Witmer noted that when new members join, a portion of their membership dues stays local, while the remainder goes to the national organization. Thereafter, the entirety of a member’s dues is paid directly to Trout Unlimited. Exclusive of conservation projects, DTU’s

the work the group is doing is necessary to the health of Lancaster County’s streams and waterways, as well as larger bodies of water like the Susquehanna River and the Chesapeake Bay. “We’ve spent approximately $3.5 million in about seven years on stream restoration projects,” said Bob Kutz, co-chair of DTU’s conservation committee, board member, and fundraising committee member. “Through these projects, we’ve greatly reduced the sediment going into the Conowingo Pond.” DTU is one of 53 chapters of Trout Unlimited in the state. The chapter was started in 1967 with about a dozen members and was named for its original meeting location. Now, more than 750 people are members of DTU, and the organization holds board meetings at the Millport Conservancy in Lititz and general meetings at the Farm and Home Center in Lancaster. The group first worked on restoring Donegal Springs and Donegal Creek, and its work has spread throughout the county. The restoration completed on Lititz Run has become nationally known, said fundraising committee member Vicki Wilson. Currently, DTU has projects in process on Fishing Creek
