Siloam Ethiopia slates fundraiser Passing around postcards

Siloam Ethiopia will host a fundraiser meal at Ethiopian Evangelical Church, 175 Church St., Landisville, on Saturday, March 11, from noon to 4:30 p.m. Traditional Ethiopian meals will be available to purchase for curbside pick up, and proceeds from the event will benefit the nonprofit organization’s humanitarian efforts in Harar, Ethiopia.

Each meal will offer a choice of three Ethiopian dishes: doro wat, a spicy chicken stew; misir wat, containing spiced red lentils; atakilt wat, a cabbage and potato stew; and kik alicha, a stew with

split peas. Injera, a type of Ethiopian flatbread, will be served with each dish.

Siloam Ethiopia’s founder, Wegayhu Ketema, recently returned from a five-week mission trip to Harar.

Faith Higley and Patrick Engle of Community Fellowship Church in Lancaster. Community Fellowship Church has been financially supporting Siloam Ethiopia’s projects and trips to Harar for the last three years.

The organization operates a free medical clinic for those in the city who are homeless or in need of treatment. Ketema was accompanied by Kari Oftedal, Jason Craig,

Oftedal, who is a doctor at Lancaster General Health, saw 35 to 40 patients each day at the free clinic. “She was extraordinary with her compassion and her care,” Ketema said. Siloam Ethiopia also partnered with Vision Care Ethiopia, a ministry based in Landisville that seeks to meet the optical needs of those in Ethiopia. Ketema and the other volunteers sorted, cleaned and distributed 150 pairs of glasses to residents of Harar during their trip.

During the trip, the volunteers in the group also spent time engaging with a girls’ orphanage in Harar. Higley assisted with organizing the storage room and its contents and taught the girls at the orphanage how to fashion washable sanitary pads, as many of the girls often cannot afford disposable ones. Engle helped to construct shelves for the storage room, and each member of the team spent time engaging with the kids at the orphanage.

“ We wanted to spend time bonding with the kids and letting them know that they’re cared for,” Ketema said. “Every morning we had breakfast with them and take them out of the orphanage for a little while.”

Ketema arrived in Harar ahead of the other volunteers to prepare for the various projects that they would be working on. This is the first time that Ketema has been joined by a team of volunteers to assist with the clinic and orphanage, and the rest of the team spent a total of 10 days in Harar.

On the third Monday of each month, the Lancaster County Postcard Club meets at the Farm & Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. During the meetings, which are open to the public, members gather to discuss postcards on a wide variety of topics. Each meeting features a specific theme and includes a talk from a guest speaker who focuses on that theme.

In January, the club creates a schedule of which themes will be incorporated throughout the year, and the topic of the club’s meetings can be anything from railroads to

boats to hometowns. For its meeting in January, the club had members share postcards relating to their favorite holidays. On Feb. 20, the topic of the meeting was cartoons and humor, and attendees participated in a member’s market to buy and sell postcards.

Jere Greider of Mountville has been a member of the postcard club f or over 20 years, first becoming interested in them while adding to his collection of Coca-Cola memorabilia. After Greider found a CocaCola postcard, he began to shift his focus to collecting postcards from around Lancaster County.

Greider is now a postcard dealer and participates in several yearly shows where postcard enthusiasts come together to buy and sell items for their collections. During the shows, around 25 postcard dealers present boxes of cards that are organized by topic. A buyer will often look for postcards from specific locations, such as his or her hometown or alma mater. Dayspring Plans 13th Remember America Event

Dayspring Christian Academy’s Remember America Speaker Series team makes decisions based in prayer and with reverence to Scripture. The choice of three speakers for this year’s event is rooted in Ecclesiastes 4:12, which reads in part, “A three-ply cord is not easily broken.”

“Our team started thinking about how our school is in partnership with parents and churches in educating our children,” said Lisa Becker, events manager with Dayspring, which is located in Mountville. That

three-strand cord of family, church, and education became the basis for this year’s banquet, with a speaker chosen to represent each of the three strands.

The 2023 Remember America Speaker Series banquet will be held at the Lancaster County Convention Center, 25 S. Queen St., Lancaster, at 6 p.m. on Saturday, April 29. The featured speakers will be author and Fox News host Pete Hegseth, speaking on education; actor Kirk Cameron, speaking on family; and worship leader Sean Feucht, speaking on the role of the church.

remember a location they visited without a camera. Many people also used them to communicate with others who lived nearby before the invention of the telephone, as a way to stay connected with each other. Today, postcards are primarily found in tourist attractions, but many vintage cards still circulate in antique stores and on the internet.

“Postcards cover every topic imaginable,” Greider said. “We have so many antique stores and outlets here in central Pennsylvania where you can find them.” Besides combing through local antiques stores, Greider often finds items to add to his collection by searching for postcards on websites like eBay. Throughout his many years spent collecting postcards, Greider has learned more about the market and what people are seeking. Currently, he is focused on collecting postcards that originate from the Mountville area and the surrounding towns.

During the March meeting, set for Monday, March 20, at 7 p.m., the Lancaster County Postcard Club will share postcards from various places of worship. For more information, search for “Lancaster County Postcard Club” on Facebook.

Hegseth came to the attention of the Dayspring team when a school staff member read his book “Battle for the American Mind: Uprooting a Century of Miseducation.” Dayspring headmaster Dan Stone explained that the first community schools in America were instituted for the purpose of teaching children to read in order that they might learn from the Word of God. “In a Christian society … the community schools taught Christian values,” said Stone, who added that changes in education began to occur in the 20th century. Hegseth’s book outlines those changes and proposes classical Christian education as a remedy. “As a Principle Approach school, there are elements of classical education (at Dayspring),” noted Stone.

Cameron is well-known for his part in the sitcom “Growing Pains” and for several family-focused films. Most recently, Cameron’s “American Campfire Revival” has encouraged the family of faith to embrace principles that may bring blessing to America.

Feucht is a worship leader, author, and missionary. “When it comes to the church, few voices have been as loud in calling God’s people to engage the culture and redeem it for Christ,” said Stone.

“It all ties together,” said Becker of the three speakers. “The mission of the Remember America Speaker Series is to remind Americans of

their unique heritage of liberty that was founded upon biblical principles. We felt that a three-strand cord is one we wanted to illuminate … to bring people together.”

Dayspring senior Caroline Hostet-

ter of Pequea Township will also present her winning oratory, “America: A Legacy of Honor and Liberty,” at the banquet.

Tickets to the event may be purchased at www.DayspringChristian .com. Readers who wish to sponsor a table may call 717-285-2000, ext. 211.

Knights top Barons in L-L League final, 57-46

The Hempfield boys’ basketball team had gone through the regular season without losing to a Lancaster-Lebanon League opponent.

The Black Knights’ 10-0 league record earned them the Section One title and advanced them into the league playoffs where they promptly eliminated Lancaster Mennonite and Warwick, earning a ticket to the league championship match on Friday, February 17, at Manheim Township.

Though the Barons got out to a 7-0 start, the Knights (22-2) eventually took the lead in the second quarter, holding on for a 57-46 victory. It was a significant win for a team that had lost last year’s championship game in the final seconds.

Hempfield shot 70.6% from the floor. Miguel Pena led the Knights with a game-high 21 points, sinking four three-point baskets on the night. Kamyn Lawrence and Ben Troyer each put up 11 points to help hold off the Barons.

Trey Grube (19 pts) and Zachary Benner (10 pts, 2 treys) led the Barons, who fell to 20-5 on the year.

WRESTLING

“We knew coming in that we had a good team,” said Shane Mack, the Hempfield wrestling coach.

This good team finished strong at the District Three Class 3A Section 2 tournament on Saturday, February 18 at Hempfield High School.

Along with junior Seamus Mack claiming the gold medal at the 127pound weight class, the Black Knights featured three second-place finishers, a solid third-place finish by J.J. Plaza at the 189-pound weight class, plus a fifth-place finish by Zy McCain-Murray.

Central Dauphin dominated much of the tournament, earning three firsts and three second-place spots en route to finishing atop the team standings with 226 points. Manheim Central was second with 131.5 team points while Hempfield (125) and McCaskey (123.5) were bunched in at third and fourth, respectively. Palmyra (104.5 pts) rounded out the top-five.

“Seamus just put it together at the right time,” said the Hempfield coach. “Overall, he knows what position he needs to be in.”

Mack pinned Tanner Breault of Warwick in merely 37 seconds to earn his first win of the day. He continued with a semifinals round pin, victimizing Barrett Keiffer of Central. In the title match, he blanked Liam Flanagan of Central Dauphin 7-0.

“He faced a really good kid who was a state qualifier last year,” Mack said.

Kam Fickes and Braden Edwards claimed silver medals at their respective weight classes - 139 and 145.

Caleb Mussman came up short in the title match at 285, settling for second place there as well.

“Kam wrestled well and made it to the finals,” Mack said. “He had a very close match in the finals.”

After a first-period pin and a 15-0 technical fall, Fickes faced Gavin Reynolds of Central Dauphin in the finale. Reynolds triumphed 5-1.

“Kam has the wrestling pedigree,” added the coach. “This was a very good sign for us.”

Edwards also began in dominant fashion, winning on a 19-4 technical fall and advancing to the semifinals. He majored Warwick’s Bryn Hess 13-4 to make the championship.

The opponent was the top seed, Matt Repos of CD. Edwards came up empty in a 7-0 decision.

“He was in the match,” Mack commented. “A couple of positions where you do things a little differently and get on the scoreboard.

“He had a great tournament overall,” Mack continued.

The 285 bout was a rematch of the L-L League finals where Mussmon faced Donegal’s Nicholai Brotzman. In that classic battle, Brotzman had earned a 3-2 win.

On Saturday, Mussmon made his way to the finale through Chocolatetown. He pinned David Isidro of Milton Hershey followed by a 9-33 decision of Hershey’s Cory Schaffer.

In the final, Brotzman out-dueled Mussmon 6-2.

“It was their third meeting,” Mack pointed out. “Nicholai adapted his tactics a little bit. If we see him again, we’ll have to change things a bit too.

“If neither guy is going to open up and score points, one scramble could be the difference maker,” Mack said of the heavyweight chess match. “Nicholai came out and decided he was going to be more aggressive. We weren’t prepared for it.”

Plaza, at 189, posted an 8-4 victory over Central Dauphin’s Eli Poyer in the opening round. Following a close 1-2 setback to Hershey’s Tristan Bigeman, Plaza not only won a 6-1 consolation match, but faced Poyer a second time, on this occasion taking the third-place match by a 6-2 count.

“He has had a huge turnaround from last year,” Mack commented.

“We are very proud of his work ethic and to see him succeed.”

McCain-Murray (133) pinned and got pinned in the first two bouts. He placed Ethan Farmer of Penn Manor on the mat only to be pinned by eventual champ Jarred Fulton of Solanco.

McCain-Murray’s next match was an intense one as it went into overtime, netting a 3-1 victory for Nate Thomas of Elizabethtown.

The Hempfield wrestler battled back as he faced Farmer a second time. He won the fifth-place match 12-4.

Vincent Hernandez finished sixth at 152. His 5-1 victory in the first round was followed by a fall that routed him through the consolations. He posted another 5-1 win, edging Mitchell Swarr of LampeterStrasburg. Hernandez suffered a 125 defeat in the fifth-place match.

“Vincent has wrestled up for us all year,” Mack explained. “He is back at the weight that’s best for him. We are happy to see him finish well.”

Charlie Williams went 1-2 on the day, wrestling at 107. Sutton Schoff (121) also went 1-2, recording a pin against Hershey’s Sebastian Weader in the consis before falling to eventual sixth-place finisher Nate Foltz of Palmyra.

Nicky Bruno’s losses at 215 were to fifth-place finisher Noah Templin of Manheim Central - a 5-2 decision - and to fourth-place finisher Brad Candy of E-town.

“He’s in the matches,” Mack said of Bruno. “We’re working to get a little more offense going - that’s an area where a few more leg attacks can generate some points.”
