E-sports team emerges at Hempfield High School

Atthe beginning of the spring semester, Hempfield High School introduced a new club to its students: e-sports club. Members of the group have been meeting during both the school’s new WIN period and after school as they lay the foundation for the new program.

Bill Turner, who teaches digital photography at Hempfield High School, first introduced the idea to create an esports team at the school prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. Turner and another member of the school’s staff researched local teams and acquired permission from the administration but had to place the project on hold in 2020. Once school routines regained a sense of normalcy, Turner approached fellow teacher and video game enthusiast Steven Lied with a plan to get the ball rolling again.

Lied and Turner began laying the groundwork for the program as they explored the resources required to operate a competitive e-sports team. They plan to make the team fully competitive next year, once the players are ready. In the meantime, Lied

Margaret Thatcher once said, “If you want something done, ask a woman.” There’s a whole lot getting done in Lancaster County, because f or the first time ever, all of the Chambers of Commerce in the county are led by women. Each woman brings a wealth of experience and a unique perspective to her role, but all

of the leaders share a common goal: They want to make their community a great place to live and work.

Denise Grove, who started her role as executive director of the Elizabethtown Area Chamber of Commerce in February of 2022, said the job offers her a way to really connect with others. “As a lifetime resident of Elizabethtown, I had a strong desire to work where I could

and Turner are meeting with the tech department and working with school administrators as the students hone their skills as a team.

“It’s been really nice to see students come in with a shared passion of video games already,” Lied said. “I’m trying to foster that bonding and team aspect, and the students take on a lot of leadership roles.”

The students in the e-sports club have been practicing two team-based video games. The first is League of Legends, an online battle arena video game that relies heavily on communication and team strategy. The second game is Rocket League, an arcadestyle game similar to soccer. Instead of trying to score goals on foot, each player pilots a vehicle and must work together with his or her teammates to score in a fast-paced setting. “Everybody is engaged and playing during practice,” Lied said. “We set high expectations academically and behaviorally. Our goal is to make it a sustainable model for future students.”

Lied added that he hopes to add more games in the future.

Although students on the e-sports team may be exercising their thumbs

more than their legs, many aspects of playing a school sport translate to the virtual extracurricular. Instead of relying on physical prowess, e-sports players practice their hand-eye coordination, communicate with other players, develop strategies and bond as a team. “I think it’s no different than any other sport. There are wrong ways to play video games just like there are for football,” Lied said. “There are moments where you’re going to fail, but you use that as an opportunity to grow and react to setbacks in a positive way.” The e-sports club has gained the full support of the school since its inception.

Although many of the teachers may not entirely understand the world of video games, the administration continues to assist with the program’s development. Students in the manufacturing class are currently crafting stands for the players’ headphones, and the e-sports club was featured on the student-run news show “Hempfield Happenings.” “The school has really rallied around this program,” Lied said. “It’s exciting. I would have killed for something like this when I was in school.”

of the community; Mountville Church of the Brethren hosts it each year, and members of a local Boy Scout troop assist with setting up the sale.

“We have the best patrons, who always fully support the book sale,” said Karen Denlinger, president of the Friends of the Mountville Library. “Some people buy books during the fall sale and return them so that we can sell them at the spring sale.”

In addition to general upkeep costs, the money raised from the sale is used for special projects at the library. Currently, library staff members are working to rearrange parts of the branch to allocate more room for its patrons and programs. The library will celebrate its 60th anniversary in October, and the Friends of the Mountville

Library are planning to organize an event for the occasion. The organization coordinates a variety of events and fundraisers for the library, including an annual plant sale in May. “Patrons always support these events so well because the library is so important to them,” Denlinger said.

Denlinger joined the Friends of the Mountville Library in 2010, after she retired from teaching. At first, Denlinger was participating in the library’s story time readings, but she decided to become more active with its fundraising efforts. “I just thought, ‘You know what? The library is important,’” Denlinger said. “So I decided to join the Friends of the Library. I like doing this kind of stuff because it means a lot to the community.”

Trips to Creation Museum, Ark Encounter planned

As in previous years, Dayspring Christian Academy invites the public to participate in its annual Summer Family Trip to the Creation Museum and Ark Encounter. Due to high levels of interest, two trips will be offered in 2023. The first trip will take place from Monday, June 26, to Friday, June 30. The second trip will take place from Monday, July 17, to Friday, July 21. Stops will include the Creation Museum in Petersburg, Ky.; the Ark Encounter

in Williamstown, Ky.; the Carnegie Museum in Pittsburgh; the Cincinnati Zoo in Cincinnati, Ohio; and the Flight 93 Memorial in Stoystown. In addition, the trip will include teaching on the motorcoach.

The trip will be led by Dayspring teacher and science department chair Randy Gehman, who has studied the creation versus evolution debate for more than 40 years. Gehman has had the opportunity to speak to thou-

sands of people in schools, in churches, and on retreats.

For many years, Dayspring students have had the opportunity to participate in a multi-day field study at the Carnegie Museum, the Creation Museum, and the Ark Encounter. This is a standing part of Dayspring Christian Academy’s life science curriculum. Extending this opportunity to the community seemed a positive next step for the school. Gehman noted

that the trip aims to increase participants’ understanding of science and Scripture.

The trip is designed for people of middle school age and up, although children as young as 6 have attended. Prices per person include all hotels, motorcoach transportation, admissions to the attractions, and breakfasts.

For more information or to register for the trip, call 717285-2000 or visit www.my creationtrip.com.

Mack takes regional second; Punches ticket to states

Semus Mack continued to dominate on the wrestling mat. The Hempfield junior earned three victories as he wrestled in the South Central Class AAA Regional tournament at Spring Grove on Friday and Saturday, February 24-25.

Having made it through as the 127-pound weight class champion at the Section Two sectionals the previous weekend, Mack took on Twin Valley senior Hunter Goff in the opening round at Spring Grove. Mack registered a firstperiod pin before going after and dominating Boiling Springs freshman Ian Longenberger on an 18-2 technical fall.

Dallastown’s Damian Key could not unlock the secret to defeating Mack, who earned a pin 55 seconds into the semifinals match.

The title match came down to Mack and Section 4 champ Tyler Adams of York Suburban. Adams managed to stay ahead of Mack for a 5-2 decision.

“It was a close match - Seamus got the first takedown,” Hempfield coach Shane Mack explained. “They got into a scramble. Seamus got caught on his back and gave up points. In close matches like that, those are the difference makers.”

The sectionals runner-up at 139 pounds was Kam Fickes. In the regionals, Fickes fell just short in a close 5-4 decision with Wylan Damon of Red Lion in the opening round. In the wrestlebacks, Fickes lost a 5-1 decision to Josh Weaver of Cedar Cliff.

Also entering regionals as the number two seed from Section 2 was Hempfield’s Braden Edwards at 145. At Spring Grove, Eddie Alcantara of Shippensburg and Wyatt Dillon of Central York could not keep up with Edwards, losing in a firstperiod pin and on a 13-3 major, respectively.

Edwards went up against Aiden Swann of Cocalico in the semis. Swann, billed as the section 1 champ, finished with an early third-period pin only to lose an 8-0 major decision to Matt Repos of Central Dauphin in the championship match.

“We actually beat him in the league finals,” Mack noted. “In this match, it didn’t start well or end well.”

The consolations pitted Edwards against Ean Wilson of Boiling Springs. The eventual third-place finisher re-routed Edwards to the fifth-place match where Dalton Redden of Gettysburg battled to a 7-2 win. Edwards took sixth in the weight class.

Junior J.J. Plaza, the thirdplace seed out of section 2 squared off against another Lancaster-Lebanon League wrestler - Garden Spot’s Blake Weaver, who had come through section 1 the previous week at Governor Mifflin as the second seed at 189.

Plaza outlasted Weaver in a 3-2 decision. In the next round, Northern York junior Cole Bartram, who came into the tournament with a 33-1 record, won by a technical fall en route to a second-place finish.

Just as he had started with a close one-point decision, Plaza’s run ended on the same type of outcome. He

lost a 2-1 decision to Rob Sterner of South Western in the consolations.

“He wrestled well,” Mack said of Plaza. “He has made huge improvements from last year. He had a great performance, and it was good to see.”

Just as Plaza had gone up against a formidable foe at 189, Caleb Mussmon shot out of the gate with a victory only to lose to one of the top seeds in the next round.

In the battle for the heavyweight gold medal, Layton Schmick of Carlisle came in with a 32-1 record and promptly pinned Micah Smith of New Oxford in the first round.

“Schmick beat him last year in districts - same tournament last year,” Mack recalled. Mussmon, following a second-period maneuver where he put Gov. Mifflin’s Hunter Unger on his back, lost in the final seconds of the first period of the quarterfinals to Schmick - the eventual champ.

Mussmon wrestled back with a 1-0 win over Ethan Nelson of Red Lion only to fall to Michael Hershey of Spring Grove

“Mussmon looked good in that match against the kid from Governor Mifflin,” Mack said. “That kept him alive. He had a couple of other opportunities to score there but did squeak out with a win.”

As for Spring Grove’s heavyweight representative, Mack said, “He’s a big physical kid. He took him off his feet and onto his back.”

Asked to assess how things have been winding down for this year’s squad, Mack replied, “On the whole, I think we had

half of our lineup with seasoned wrestlers. We had a nice year. It’s difficult making it to the state tournament. You’re talking four kids from each weight class out of sixty schools.

“Looking ahead, in order to keep our success in the league and districts going in the right direction, our returning wrestlers will have to continue working hard.”

BASKETBALL

When the high school basketball season reaches late February and your team is still playing, then you’ve had a successful campaign and you’re at some stage of the postseason.

On Friday night, February 17, the Black Knights earned a thrilling 61-58 victory at home over Central York, advancing to the District Three Class 6A boys’ basketball semifinals.

The excitement was prompted by the Panthers’ unyielding bid to claw back into the contest after Hempfield (23-2) had outscored them 23-10 in the opening period. The Panthers (17-7) slashed that deficit to nine points by halftime and down to one single point heading into the fourth quarter47-46 Hempfield.

The Knights had four players score in double figures. Kamyn Lawrence led the way with 17 points, Ben Troyer poured in 14, including a pair of threepoint baskets, and Chase Calabretta came away with 12. Michael Pena added 11 points, including three treys, and reached the 1,000-point mark of his career.

Ben Rill and Ben Natal each scored 14 for Central York.

The Black Knights’ drive for a district trophy was derailed, however, as Cumberland Valley topped Hempfield 46-35 on Monday, February 27, in a semifinal match at CV. The Eagles, coming in as the second-seeded team, took a 27-19 lead into the locker room at halftime thanks to a 17-11 run in the second quarter.

Lawrence led Hempfield with 14 points while Pena hit in a pair of treys on a 12-point performance. Calabreatta finished with seven points.

BOWLING

In the District Three Class 3A boys’ bowling singles semifinals, Hempfield’s Derick Keller faced off against Cameron Wegert of Middletown. Keller, the second seed in the brackets, had earned a first-round bye while Wegert

edged Central York Bryce Kline 248-245.

In the semis, Wegert maintained the momentum, topping Keller 223-207.

The Hempfield junior finished third in districts while Wegert won it all, defeating Zach Wentzel of Elizabethtown in the championship game 246-200.

Keller reached the finals by tallying 1135 points in the qualifiers. Wentzel finished as the top seed with 1153 points. Wegert’s 1118 was good for third place.

Keller’s big game was in the first set of frames where he recorded a 279. Aside from Wegert’s perfect score of 300 in the fifth game of the qualifying rounds, Keller’s 279 was the highest score among the top six bowlers.

Justice, and Race in Contemporary American Culture; Understanding Pennsylvania Democracy; Thinking About the American Presidency; Short Story Discussion Group; Causes, Impacts, and Vulnerabilities to Weather, Water, and Climate Extremes; and Decades That Transformed the Modern Western World. Sessions will be presented by local experts in their fields.

make a difference and be a part of strengthening our community,” she remarked, a sentiment shared by Heather Valudes, who has been president and CEO of the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce since June of 2022. “I love Lancaster and the work that we are able to advance to make our employer community as strong as possible,” she said, noting that the Lancaster Chamber is countywide and represents nearly 1,500 businesses, almost half of the county’s workforce.

For Ashley Zell, who became executive director of the Mount Joy Chamber of Commerce in January, the job brings a chance to get to know her community. “The friends and connections made and the interaction with the Chamber members and

community at our numerous different events are definitely the biggest rewards of this position,” Zell said.

The women also remarked that holding the job offers a chance to see their communities thrive. “It’s seeing kids dancing at the farmers market,” commented Rebecca Branle, who has been executive director of Venture Lititz since August of 2021. “It’s celebrating big wins with merchants. It’s watching this town become ever more alive with art, culture and community pride.” Her perspective matches that of Kristie Schmid, who has been executive director of the Manheim Area Chamber of Commerce since March of 2021. “I love seeing our community respond to the revitalization in town, the increase in businesses and the new community events,” Schmid said. “It’s fulfilling to put your time into something and then see others have pride in it as well.”

For some of the Chamber leaders, the role is a full-time job. For others, it’s something they do in addition to other employment. As a financial adviser for Edward Jones, Jona Green serves as head of the Southern Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce on a volunteer basis, but she’s just as committed to that role as she is her paid job. “The biggest reward is absolutely the connection to our schools and community,” said Green, who has been leading her Chamber since March of 2022. “Our reach is large, but our heart is rooted in service and making more things possible for our members.”

Although each of the Chambers faces its own challenges, the directors all project positivity when it comes to their communities. “Right now, we see the biggest challenge for a number of our members to be finding enough employees,” said Kerry Meyers, who stepped down as executive director of the Mount Joy Chamber of Commerce after more than 11 years and is now executive assistant to Zell. “And for our small shops in Mount Joy, it is getting customers in their doors. We need the community to support small local businesses.”

Liz Ackerman, who has been executive director of the Northern Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce since January of 2019, said her organization faces a challenge of keeping pace with expansion. “We are growing at an exponential rate,” she explained, noting that she values maintaining a close connection with all of the Chamber’s 430-plus members. “We pride ourselves on knowing every member’s name and understanding their needs.”

For some of the directors, being a female leader in the world of business has been a challenge they’ve faced with grace. “I have learned to embrace my leadership style and not shy away from opportunities to lead,” said Grove, noting that she attributes her success to surrounding herself with strong female role models. “Confidence in yourself is key. We all belong at the table, so be brave enough to pull up a chair. If you are afraid, do it anyway.”

That’s a feeling Branle said she understands. “My worst enemy has always been the negative voice in my head, telling me to question my worthiness,” she stated. “If you, too, have a voice like that, learn to tell her to be quiet.”

As committed as they are to their Chambers, all of the women have managed to find a work-life balance. Meyers has been married for 45 years and loves spending time with her

two children and five grandchildren. Zell is raising a family of three with her husband, and they enjoy hiking and attending Faith Bible Fellowship Church. Valudes is the married mother of twin daughters, serves as secretary for the Paradise Township Lions Club and helps with Girl Scouts. Grove and her husband enjoy spending time with their seven children and eight grandchildren, and Grove is active with the Rotary Club of Elizabethtown, where she will serve as president beginning in 2025. Ackerman and her husband are raising two children, and she describes herself as a “serial volunteer” with numerous organizations. Branle and her husband have three children, and the family loves to bike, travel and play “very competitive family football games.” Green and her husband are raising two children who are active in their high school’s marching band, and she joked that her favorite hobby is “networking.” Schmid has been married for 22 years, has three girls and loves to read, shop and explore local breweries.

As for advice for other female leaders, each woman referenced striking a balance between being assertive and being kind. “Work with integrity,” Zell stated. “Be willing to humble yourself. Be respectful of others in the workplace and the community.”

Ackerman advised that women should also be kind to themselves. “Own your talents and always accept a compliment,” she remarked. “This is one of the hardest things to learn, but recognizing your strengths, especially when someone points them out to you, provides a confidence that will reach far beyond anything you can read in a book.”

And don’t underestimate what you can achieve, Schmid said, adding, “Never limit yourself. Find your passion and put your all into developing it so you can bring your best to the table.”

Praise band to present oldies concert

Wayside Presbyterian Church’s in-house praise band, Grace Notes, will present a concert of hits of the ‘60s and ‘70s on Friday, March 17, at 6:30 p.m. Wayside’s music director, Janelle Pabon, and her bandmates will perform songs from artists such as B.B. King, Eric Clapton, Wilson Pickett, Zach Williams, Etta James, and Gary Moore. Pabon noted that attendees will receive a preview of the annual Waystock Community

Music and FunFest, which will take place on Saturday, June 10.

The event is free and open to the public. For more information, call the church office at 717-898-1551 or visit www.waysidepc.org.

On Sundays, Wayside offers a traditional worship service with a choir from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. followed by refreshments and fellowship. An informal praise service featuring Grace Notes is held from 11 a.m. to noon.

Irish dance concert planned

Hooley School of Irish Dance will perform in a concert on Sunday, March 12, at 3 p.m. The event will be held at the Bachman Center, 633 Community Way, Lancaster. Members of the school will present historic and folk dance forms accompanied by Celtic music.

Hooley Irish Dance is an award-winning TCRG/ADCRG certified Irish dance school with CLRG located in Leola and Reading. Hooley’s priority is to provide a supportive community and excellent

learning environment in order to cultivate character, excellence, and integrity in each dancer. Dancers are encouraged to be positive and goal-oriented in order to strive for their best. Classes run all year long for people age 2 and up.

The performance by the Hooley School of Irish Dance is sponsored by the Musical Art Society, a subsidiary of the National Federation of Music Clubs and the Pennsylvania Federation of Music Clubs. The Musical Art Soci-

ety hosts concert programs each year and sponsors the Workshop for Young Performing Artists (WYPA) as well as scholarships for young musicians.

The next Musical Art Society concert will be held on Sunday, April 16, at 3 p.m. at the Bachman Center. Members of the WYPA will present solo piano and instrumental concert works.
