Garden Symposium Will Emphasize Native Plants, Pollinators By Dayna M. Reidenouer
The Master Gardener organizers of the 27th annual Shirley R. Wagner Garden Symposium have once again planned an event to appeal to anyone with an interest in gardening. Speakers during the event will talk about trends in gardening, weeds, woodland wildflowers, native bees, and plants for pollinators. An update on the spotted lanternfly infestation will also be offered. “For a gardener, this is the place to be,” said symposium co-chair Brenda Walker. Fellow co-chair Holly List added, “It’s a wonderful place to talk with other gardeners.” The symposium will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 13, at the Farm and Home Center,
1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. When the doors open at 7:45 a.m., a continental breakfast will be available, and attendees may shop the Gardeners’ Marketplace. Vendors will include sellers of stoneware and porcelain pottery, pollinator-attracting native plants, home and garden décor, small-batch bath and body projects, succulents, herbs, perennials, and preplanned gardens. Walker explained that preplanned gardens are approximately six to eight complementary plants sold as a group. In addition to the businesses selling items, the Master Gardeners of Lancaster County will host the Garden Shed, offering gently used gardening materials as a preview of the group’s annual plant sale, which will be held on Saturday, May 4, this year. “These are true gardeners’ treasures,” Walker remarked. Furnace Center, 26 Furnace Road, Marietta, in the Lancaster County Chickies Day Use Park. The tour will begin with an overview of the role that the Susquehanna River played in the Industrial Revolution during the mid-1800s to early 1900s. The walk will include tours at the Henry Clay Furnace and the Musselman/Vesta Iron Furnace Center. The Musselman/Vesta was nominated and received the Community Initiative Award from the Pennsylvania Historic Preservation Awards, which honor individuals and organizations that exhibited excellence in the field of historic
preservation. The awards are presented by Preservation Pennsylvania, a statewide, private nonprofit membership organization dedicated to preserving Pennsylvania’s historic places through creative partnerships, targeted educational and advocacy programs, special projects, and technical assistance. Several changes have taken place recently at the Musselman/Vesta Iron Furnace Center. The center has been given an extension of its lease to include the furnace ruins. This will allow Rivertownes to clear more of the ruins. Also, Rivertownes has installed eight self-guided panels in the area. These panels will guide visitors
through the ruins when the center is not open. The Dr. June Evans Henry Clay Furnace Exhibit is a new addition at the Iron Center. The exhibit houses many of the artifacts dug up during the 1989 to 1994 summer field studies conducted by Evans and students from Millersville University. The walking tour will be led by David Haneman, Rivertownes president, and Lenny Droege, director of the Musselman/Vesta Iron Furnace Center. any woman to speak so properly she could be mistaken for a duchess. Eliza hopes she will sound more like a lady in order to work in a flower shop. The musical highlights the comedic yet complex relationship between Eliza and Henry as they form an unlikely friendship. According to the school, “My Fair Lady” offers insight on the struggle of finding one’s identity, the power of words, and transformation.
“It is a musical about words,” noted director Joanne Kroll. “They have power - what we say, how we say it, and what actions are behind them. Words can bring life or death. “It is also about transformation,” Kroll continued. “If the characters in the show can be transformed, there is grace and hope for us all to be transformed by God when we allow Him.” “My Fair Lady” features a cast

The newest class of Master Gardeners will display projects outlining the results of current research, including information on rain gardens, pollinators, vegetables, and more. All of the Master Gardeners were given an opportunity to include tidbits about their own gardens in the event booklet, a copy of which every attendee will receive along with seeds, information, and other resources. Symposium attendees may visit the vendors during the breaks between sessions. Jourdan Cole of the Garden Media Group will kick things off by reviewing eight recent garden trends that encourage a love of nature. “People have been saying they’re looking forward to this (session),” List said. Recently retired horticulture extension educator and Master Gardener Annette MaCoy will talk all about weeds and how to control them. List praised MaCoy’s knowledge base and noted that she has trained many of the Master Gardeners in Lancaster County. Bowman’s Hill Wildflower Preserve executive director Miles Arnott will discuss the life cycles of early spring plants and their ecological benefit. “We don’t often use them (in planned gardens) because they’re not around very long, but they add a taste of

History. Mystery. Whimsy. Suspense. Science. Romance. Inspiration. Crafting. Cooking. The Mount Joy Church of God (MJCOG) Used Book Sale and Bake Sale will have all of this and more. Thousands of tomes will be available for perusal and purchase on Friday, April 5, from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on Saturday, April 6, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the foyer of the church, located at 30 E. Main St., Mount Joy. Book sale coordinator Joyce Hershey explained that the book sale used to be part of the church’s rummage sale, but now the event is all about books. “We want to recycle these books and get them in the hands of people,” she
enthused, “and we have a wide selection of books.” Aware that book sale enthusiasts can also become hungry, volunteer Sirenda McNece will assist with the food table, where coffee and baked goods will be available for takeout. “We call it Food To Go,” she said, “and we’ll also have American, Italian, and turkey subs, while supplies last.” McNece got involved with the sale because she wanted to be more involved with the church and she loves books. “I read so much as a girl that my parents used to ground me from reading,” she said with a laugh. Proceeds from the sale will go to Elizabethtown Community Housing and Outreach Services (ECHOS), a not-for-profit

She noted that the seminar “Rental Candidate to Rental Tenant” is a preview of a program LHOP is developing. Topics discussed will be how to build credit and how to get to a position where one is ready to rent. Spanish language translation will be available at the event. explained SoWe neighborhood director Jake Thorsen. Residents of the southwest quadrant are especially encouraged to attend the home fair, but everyone else in Lancaster County is welcome to attend. The fair is organized by LHOP and SoWe and will aim to provide helpful information for renters, homeowners, and buyers and sellers of property. Mortgage lenders, real estate agents, home inspectors, attorneys, and insurance agents will be among the exhibitors. Title companies and pest control agencies, along with the City of Lancaster, Pet Pantry of Lancaster County, and Lancaster-Lebanon Habitat, will also be represented. “We (will encourage) people to talk to each of the vendors and enter door prize drawings,” said LHOP director of development Laurie Moir. Among the prizes is a family pass to Conestoga Pines Pool. “There are lots of giveaways just for coming,” added event cochair Carole Kirchner. She noted that while giveaways are fun, the real prize is the knowledge folks will glean at the event. “My daughter came two years ago, and afterward, she said, ‘ W hat a really neat event,’” Kirchner related. “You will walk away with something you didn’t know.” The event is open to everyone not just first-time homebuyers - and

“We had 500 attendees last year and are hoping that number is higher this year,” said program support liaison Linda Swisher, speaking about the 26th annual Lancaster-Lebanon IU 13 Education Conference scheduled for Tuesday, June 18, at LampeterStrasburg High School, 1600 Book Road, Lancaster. In order for the conference to serve a broad range of people, an equally wide-ranging list of topics will be addressed in morning and afternoon breakout sessions. A sampling of subjects includes drug and alcohol prevention and current drug trends; anger management for adolescents; mindfulness; eating disorders, specifically anorexia; how to help bereaved students; special education law; diversity; helping students with anxiety; planning for retirement; and effectively managing language barriers. There will also be classes on literacy, behavior, math, autism, technology, and preschool/Early Intervention. “Two sessions that we are very excited about this year are the sessions on Phenomenal Science
who believes that each and every day ‘together we can do so much.’” The keynote speaker for the conference will be Jeremy Anderson, who has become an author, businessman, and motivational speaker after recovering from drug and alcohol abuse. Anderson struggled to succeed in school, but he now holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees. During his address, “Diamond in the Rough,” Anderson will reveal how challenges can be used to develop endurance and previously concealed abilities within educators and students. He will also focus on establishing an environment in which student rapport and academic success can be cultivated, using his story to tie in strategies to engage at-risk students. During the morning breakout sessions, Anderson will lead a discussion on building allies in the classroom in order to help troubled students recognize their full potential. The conference will run from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Registration will open at 7:45 a.m., and a continental breakfast will be available. Attendees may visit sponsors’ tables and enter to win prizes from local businesses. Lunch will be provided and, along with breakfast, is included in the cost of
Jeremy Anderson attendance. Act 48 hours will be awarded for the conference. In order to ensure that the conference is accessible to anyone with interest, a special rate has been set for parents, substitute teachers, and university students, and an early bird discount will be offered to school district and agency personnel who register before Wednesday, May 1. Registrations and payment must be received by Friday, June 7. Folks may register by visiting www.iu13.org. For more information, readers may contact Swisher at 717-606-1878 or linda_swisher@iu13.org.
United Disabilities Services (UDS) Service Dogs, a nonprofit organization committed to serving people with disabilities in Pennsylvania, has been accredited by the Assistance Dogs International (ADI). ADI is a worldwide coalition of nonprofit programs that train and place assistance dogs. ADI’s objectives are to establish and promote standards of excellence in all areas of assistance dog acquisition, training and partnership; facilitate communication and learning among member programs; and educate
the public on the benefits of assistance dogs and ADI membership. Assistance dog organizations that pass ADI’s accreditation process become ADI Accredited Member programs and are assessed every five years to ensure they meet the highest standards in the industry. In 2018, UDS moved its corporate headquarters to a new location, allowing for substantial growth in its service dogs program. UDS Service Dogs specializes in dogs to assist individuals, including veterans with mobility disabilities. The dogs are trained
to provide services such as opening and closing doors, turning lights on and off, helping to remove jackets and socks, retrieving and delivering items, and pushing elevator buttons. They also provide affection and companionship. UDS Service Dogs also trains dogs to assist individuals with autism. These dogs’ job is to help with pressure, interrupting behavior, and alerting or finding an adult. The UDS Service Dogs program is growing and looking for new clients to match with the specially trained dogs.
UDS Service Dogs has also begun placing dogs in educational facilities. Within the past year, 15 dogs have been placed in central Pennsylvania. Facility dogs help engage students during school, with the goal of helping them remain focused on their work, thereby creating a viable learning environment. Facility dogs are also intended to promote positive feelings and to help calm fear and anxiety. For more information, readers may contact Lori Breece at lorib@udservices.org or visit www.udservices.org.

Instruction and Stopping the Bleed,” Swisher remarked. “The Science Instruction session is the first time we have offered a STEM-related topic, and the Stop the Bleed session is a national program that instructs participants on how to control bleeding in an emergency situation.” All of the sessions are designed to improve the lives of students of all ages and abilities by effectively resourcing educators, professionals, parents, and others who have an interest in education. The theme of the conference is “Together … We Can Do So Much.” Swisher noted that the title is part of a quotation from Helen Keller, who said, “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” “When we work together for a common purpose, we can achieve things beyond our greatest imagination. This is especially true in education where we share the common goal of making a positive difference in the lives of students and their families,” said Kathy Rose, early childhood and special education services program director for IU 13. “This year’s conference focuses on collaborating and working as a team to educate all students through innovative approaches to teaching. musical centers on the building of a community out of an eclectic group of people. The show features well-known songs such as “Day by Day,” “All Good Gifts,” and “By My Side.” The show began as book writer John-Michael Tebelak’s thesis project at Carnegie Mellon University in 1970. It reached Off-Broadway in 1971 and was made into a major motion picture starring Victor Garber in 1973. In The Service Edwards Receives Promotion In February, Eric Edwards, a resident of West Hempfield and a member of the U.S. Air Force, was promoted to the rank of chief master sergeant, which is the highest enlisted rank in the Air Force and is limited by law to 1 percent of the enlisted population. Edwards, a 1998 graduate of Hempfield High School, joined the U.S. Air Force in November 1998. Since April 2018, Edwards has been the Superintendent, 86th Aerospace Medicine Squadron (AMDS) at Ramstein Air Base in Germany. He previously served at Ramstein as superintendent, bioenvironmental engineering, 86th AMDS, from June 2017 to April 2018. In his current role as the senior enlisted leader of the largest overseas AMDS, he advises the commander on all matters affecting the health, morale, and welfare of 125 airmen. The squadron provides bioenvironmental engineering, flight and operational medicine, optometry, public health, aerospace physiology, and health promotion services for 57,000 beneficiaries across 139 geographically separated units, 93 countries, and four combatant commands. The unit also includes the En-Route Patient Staging Flight, which provides transport for patients to higher echelons of care. In addition, Edwards serves as the associate MAJCOM functional manager for 85 bioenvironmental engineering enlisted members assigned to 36 units within United States Air Forces Europe and Air Force Forces in Africa. His background includes duties in industrial hygiene, environmental sampling and protection, radiation safety, and hazardous materials. He also has experience with munitions systems and precision guided munitions. Additionally, he has served as the noncommissioned officer in charge at the first term airman’s center,
Eric Edwards additional duty first sergeant, and squadron superintendent. Edwards also served in support of Operations Allied Force, Southern Watch, and Northern Watch and the Global War on Terrorism. He has completed assignments around the world, from Italy to Langley Air Force Base in Virginia. Over the years, he has completed a variety of specialist courses, along with leadership schools and academies. In 2006, he received associate degrees in munitions systems technology and bioenvironmental engineering technology from the Community College of the Air Force. In 2007 he was an honor graduate with a Bachelor of Science in business management from University of Phoenix, and in 2009, he earned a Master of Business Administration from the university. He has received the Meritorious Service Medal with Two Oak Leaf Clusters, Air Force Commendation Medal with Two Oak Leaf Clusters, and Air Force Achievement Medal, among other achievements.
