Anchor Club to hold annual craft fair
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDThe Hempfield High School (HHS) Anchor Club will host its annual craft fair on Saturday, April 20, in the school’s Buchanan Gym, located at 200 Stanley Ave., Landisville.
From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., a variety of items will be available to purchase from vendors comprising students, teachers and community members in the Hempfield School District.
Refreshments will be available to purchase from several food trucks during the fair. The event will also feature various prize drawings for items donated by businesses and organizations such as Hempfield recCenter, Laserdome and local restaurants.
All vendors will sell products that have been made by hand, including jewelry, pottery,
ceramics, cutting boards, coasters and various wooden crafts. Additionally, many students from local elementary schools will participate in the fair by selling homemade products, including magnets, friendship bracelets, home décor, artisan soaps, desserts and slime.
Every year, the HHS Anchor Club chooses a local nonprofit organization to support with the proceeds from the craft fair. Members of the club used the first fair in 2022 as a way to raise money for families affected by the war in Ukraine.
to the Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute and the Literacy Council of Lancaster-Lebanon.
This year, the Anchor Club’s board members wished to support a nonprofit organization in the school district.
“The craft fair is a great way for students and staff members to showcase their talents, as well as support organizations close to the hearts of our members.”
Last year, the Anchor Club donated proceeds from the event
Erin Settle, a teacher at Centerville Elementary School and Anchor Club adviser, consulted a school social worker to find a nonprofit that frequently serves local students. “Anchor Club is always looking for ways to be involved in the community and to raise money for a good cause,” Settle said. “The craft fair is a great
way for students and staff members to showcase their talents, as well as support organizations close to the hearts of our members.” Proceeds from this year’s craft fair will benefit the Hempfield Clothing Bank in Landisville.
In addition to highlighting vendors’ talents and supporting a nonprofit organization every year, the craft fair serves as an opportunity for members of the Anchor Club to showcase the volunteer work they do year-round. “We have a large group of around 90 kids, and some of them are active in Anchor Club members from freshman to senior year,” said Settle. “These kids have stepped up and done a lot for the community.”

BY CATHY MOLITORISOver the past seven decades, Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC) has grown from one couple producing one paper to a company that employs 150 people, distributes 16 community newspapers and multiple specialty publications to close to 200,000 people, and provides printing services for numerous clients. Although the scope of the business has changed, one thing has remained constant: community.
“We want to make that connection to our local merchants and to our community members,” said Charlie Engle, company president.
As EPC marks 70 years in business this year, Charlie and his daughter Jocelyn Engle looked back on what started in 1954 in the basement of Alvin and Pauline Engle’s Mount Joy home.
“My dad bought his own little press and put it in our basement,” Charlie said of Alvin. “He was working full time in the printing business, but he always wanted to do his own thing.”
In 1959, EPC purchased its first community publication, the Merchandiser, and
by 1960, Alvin had quit his day job to focus on the new business full time. It soon became a family enterprise, with Alvin and Pauline selling ads while their children - Charlie, Audrey, and Denny - helped where they could.
Charlie recalled the tedious task of cutting and hand-gluing address labels on the paper as well as folding each of the newspapers by hand. When Alvin died unexpectedly in 1971, the family faced a decision.
“My mother came to us and said, ‘There are some people who are interested in buying the business,’” Charlie recalled. “The three children all agreed, and we all said no to selling. We knew we could do this.”
Today, there are also four members of the third generation of Engles at EPC, with several fourth-generation family members helping out sporadically.
Outside printing is the bread and butter of the business, with production running 24 hours a day, five days a week. Along with continuing to publish the Merchandiser and other community papers, including the Pennysaver, Advertiser, and Community Courier, EPC produces local Chamber guides, Farm Show premium books and more.
supports a variety of local programs.”
EPC publications focus on telling the good news happening at nonprofit organizations, schools and local businesses, and that’s more important than ever, Jocelyn said.
and tell positive stories through its community newspapers and online at www.townlively.com.
Charlie became company president, with Denny serving as vice president, positions both men still hold today. Audrey also dedicated herself to the company before her death in 2018. Pauline continued to work for EPC well into her 70s. She passed away in 2020.
Seventy years of business has included ups and downs for the company, Charlie said. Challenges have ranged from competition to rising costs to navigating the pandemic. Through it all, EPC has remained focused on its original mission: serving the community.
“Our family and the company have been blessed,” Charlie said. “Since we’ve been blessed, we want to bless others. We started a foundation in the early ‘90s, and that
“We are surrounded by bad news,” she said. “Every time we turn on the TV, every time we open our phone, it’s upsetting. It brings us down. There are so many good things happening in our community, and we want to shine a light on them.”
Asked about the secret to EPC’s longevity, Charlie didn’t hesitate to answer. “We’ve had good people,” he said simply. “We have so many longtime employees, some who have been here for 35 or 40 years.”
As for the next 70 years, Charlie and Jocelyn envision a bright future. The company is transitioning into providing digital solutions for clients, while continuing to support local businesses
“I love the legacy my grandfather started,” Jocelyn said. “I never met him, but I know his goal and his mission was to support the community, and we won’t lose that connection to the community. We will continue to be hyperlocal, providing our advertisers with options to target just their region and news specifically about your school district and local community. We’re focused on right here, where we live, and all the good things that are happening.”

Because Community Aid’s mission addresses barriers to housing, food and basic needs, the grant funds needed to be earmarked for those purposes, said Lisa Palmquist, Pilot International secretary.
A Woman’s Concern used the money to order six car seats from Chicco. The Pilot Club members purchased 36 $15 Community Aid gift cards to put in Easter bags for residents of Hershey Mill Home, and the group presented food and a check for $518 to the Columbia Food Bank.
You never know when you might see members of the organization serving others in the community. “We enjoy doing pick-me-ups or acts of kindness to make the world a better place,” Palmquist commented.
Pilot Club of Central Pennsylvania meets at 6 p.m. on the fourth Tuesday of the month at Columbia Fire Hall, 726 Manor St., Columbia. The group welcomes new members. Vintage Candy Shop, which had its original location in the Cabbage Hill neighborhood of Lancaster city, has moved to a much larger downtown spot near the square. The candy shop, which debuted two years ago at 602 St. Joseph St., closed that 600-squarefoot location on Aug. 4, 2023, and moved to a 4,000-square-foot space at 38 W. King St., where it also has a concession window, an ice cream counter and a vending cafe.
The shop reopened in late February, and is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Hours may be extended on weekends as the weather warms and for First Fridays. An official ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the grand opening was scheduled for March 27 at 11 a.m., sponsored by the Lancaster City Alliance.
At the new King Street shop, the Vintage Candy Shop has expanded its selection of more than 500 different kinds of candies, including candy necklaces, wax bottles, jawbreakers, candy buttons, caramels, chocolates, gummies, fruit slices and mints and nougats. There are also the classic Barley Toys, Peanut Butter Puffs and Chocolate Straws by Plantation Candy Co., a Pennsylvania-based candy manufacturer, as well as several hundred individually wrapped novelties, including Mary Janes, Razzles, freeze-dried Space
Candy, Wax Lips, SkyBars, Zagnut Bars and Zotz.
Fresh cotton candy is made on-site, and Taffy Lane offers mix-n-match salt water taffy that customers can select and weigh on an antique scale. The shop’s popular Stained Glass Art Cookie Kits will be available in both original sugar cookie and chocolate flavors in the shop. The kits make it easy and fun to create one-of-a kind edible works of art. Each kit includes individual mix packets, candies and cookie cutters.
The ice cream counter serves hand-dipped locally made Kreider Farms ice cream in a variety of flavors with toppings that include hot fudge and the classic chocolate shell. Hot drinks and slushies are served daily both inside and at the concession window, which also offers snacks, novelty candies, soft pretzels and muffins to walking customers.
The new shop also features a vending cafe offering a wide variety of meals, snacks, drinks and sandwiches. The cafe has seating at both rectangular and round tables, complete with vintage stools that are kid-friendly favorites. With self-serve microwave stations with an array of condiments, the vending cafe offers easy, quick affordable options for anyone on the go.
