Scholarship organization crowns 2024 winners

Every year, young women in Lancaster County have an opportunity to participate in the Miss Lancaster County Scholarship Pageant. On Feb. 3, six titleholders were crowned during the contest at Ephrata High School, qualifying them to advance to the Miss Pennsylvania and Miss Pennsylvania’s Teen Scholarship competitions in June. This year’s winning contestants include Noelle Schneider of Quarryville, Julianna Billings of Peach Bottom, AmandaGrace Krier of Levittown, Kathryn Davis of Willow Street, Whitney Ridler of Manchester, and Maggie Roe of Lancaster.

In 1863, German woodworker Michael Dentzel sent his 17-year-old son, Gustav, to open a cabinet store the United States. Gustav began crafting carousels, including one that was installed in Rocky Springs Park in Lancaster in 1899. As improvements were made to the park over the years, the carousel was enhanced as well; a building was constructed around the carousel, and it was upgraded with mechanisms that run on electricity instead of steam. The attraction remained at the park until 1982, but few Lancaster County residents know what became of Gustav’s famous carousel since then.

During the scholarship pageant, each contestant gave a unique performance and highlighted a community service project near to her heart. Roe, a senior at Hempfield High School and the recipient of the Miss Heart of Lancaster’s Teen award, performed a lyrical dance and shared her community service initiative, SMASSurvivor. SMASSurvivor seeks to raise awareness of superior mesenteric artery syndrome (SMAS) and to provide support for those with the condition. SMAS is a rare disease that causes proximal small bowel obstruction, and it can become fatal in cases where diagnoses are delayed. According to Roe, 33% of people who die from SMA syndrome are diagnosed on the autopsy table. “When I found out a large percentage of those who pass away from SMAS were never diagnosed and would never know why they always felt so sick, I was horrified,” Roe wrote in an Instagram post in January. “This fact was one of the main reasons I started SMASurvivor. Because everyone deserves a diagnosis, an opportunity to receive treatment and a chance to experience a fulfilling life.”

The longer it remained at Rocky Springs Park, the more the carousel became intertwined with Lancaster’s history.

In 1963, local residents began protesting at the park due to

its segregated pool, and the attractions were closed to the public in 1968. Rocky Springs Park reopened more than a decade later, but attendance was heavily impacted by the

For a group of local veterans, breakfast is the most important meal of the day.

Sure, the nutrition is important. But the real sustainability comes from fellowship, shared experiences and compassion.

The group goes by the name of Lancaster County Veterans Breakfast Club (LCVBC). While it’s sort of a cross between a self-help outreach program and a support group, it’s also a reminder that United States veterans have always come up with

ways to get the job done.

“There’s a camaraderie with all of us,” said LCVBC founder Bill Terry. “There is a bond. We are all brothers and sisters. It’s honoring those who have gone before us. There’s an understanding that we gave to the defense of our country. It’s what all of us have in common. It might have been a higher calling because it’s not for everyone.”

LCVBC meets on the third Saturday of every month. Over the past five years, the breakfast club had met at a restaurant in Bird-in-Hand before a fire

Afari was inducted into the Columbia High School Sports Hall of Fame in 2018.

Bowers started his running career at McCaskey High School and matriculated at Millersville State College, where he earned four letters in track and three in cross-country. He earned school records in the 440-yard dash and 440-yard hurdles. Bowers had a distinguished career in both, where he won many dual meets and won a medal at the Penn Relays for the first time in

Millersville school history. In his senior year, Bowers set a school record for the 440 dash and was the PSAC champion in the 440 hurdles, also setting a school record. His Millersville team won the PSAC Championships for the first time in school history and also went 9-0 during the dual meet season.

Bowers then proceeded to coach cross-country at Hempfield High School from 1972 to 2003 and girls’ track from 1976 to 1988 and 1998 to 2004. temporarily shut down the restaurant.

In the upcoming months, LCVBC has scheduled meetings at 6:45 a.m. on April 20, May 18 and June 15 all at the former Revere Tavern, 3063 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise. Many of the breakfasts are paid for by sponsors, including local businesses.

“It didn’t start out with a mission,” said Terry, a resident of East Hempfield Township and a Vietnam War-era Navy veteran. “It was just a way to get vets together. It was a time to have breakfast with other veterans. Then some gentlemen began stepping up and paying for the breakfast. Now we have a jar and pass it around and collect funds for veterans’ groups. We’re still giving back to the community, even though some of us have already put our lives on the line.”

A typical LCVBC gathering could include the Pledge of Allegiance, a prayer, the relaying of jokes and a guest speaker.

“There seems to be a lack of understanding toward what veterans have done,” said Terry. “If you were not in battle, it’s much easier to get acclimated back into civilian life. If you were in battle, it is hard.”

Anywhere from 100 to 130 local veterans show up for the breakfasts. Most hail from the Vietnam War era, but the group also includes veterans of World War II, Korean War, the war in Afghanistan and other military conflicts.

“The interaction that goes on there is great,” said Terry. “There is an element of support to it.”

According to the United States Department of Defense, less than 1% of the country’s total population is currently serving in the military, and only about 10% of the total population are veterans. Nearly 17 veterans commit suicide each day, according to the United States Department of Veterans Affairs.

“Vets wear hats so we can identify each other,” said Terry. “It’s not for the civilians. It’s so we know who served. I’ll look for the hats when I’m handing out business cards for the breakfast club. The breakfast club is a way to come out and be with like-minded people. For some, it’s a way to continue to serve the community.”

Veterans are encouraged to make reservations for the breakfast by calling Mary at 717-929-0310.

nuclear accident at ThreeMile Island and a local polio outbreak. To ensure its safety, the carousel was removed from Rocky Springs in 1982. It was placed in Lake Lansing Park in Michigan the following year, where the carousel was active until the park’s closure in 1986. In 1989, the carousel was moved to Dollywood, an amusement park in Tennessee owned by country singer Dolly Parton. The carousel was rebranded as the Dollywood Dentzel Carousel, and it remained at Dollywood for nearly a decade. Finally, after being purchased by a group known as the Friends of the Rocky Springs Carousel in 1998, the historic ride returned to Lancaster, where it has hidden in storage ever since.

Despite the historical significance and rarity of the Rocky Springs Carousel, every attempt at restoring the Rocky Springs Carousel to its former glory and finding a new home for it has been unsuccessful. According to a 2020 census conducted by the National Carousel Association, the ride is one of 208 classic wood carousels in North America. Of these 208 antiques, only 18 were manufactured by the

Dentzel Carousel Company.

In 2021, Willow Street resident Eileen Gregg published a book to chronicle the story of the famous attraction titled “Lancaster’s Hidden Treasure:

The Rocky Springs Dentzel Carousel.” The book includes the history of the Dentzel family and photos of the ride that have never been published before.

On Jan. 29, 2024, Gregg organized the screening of the first half of a film at Willow Valley Communities that includes videos of the carousel in use during the ‘90s. The footage was taken by Robert Scuorzo of Henderson, N.C., who sent it to Gregg for safekeeping. Gregg plans to hold a viewing of the film’s second half in the near future.

“I am very fortunate to have the film,” Gregg said. “The first half of the film shows the carousel in operation, and some of the scenes are of the carousel’s final day of operation that took place at the end of the 1998 Christmas season.”

For more information or to find out when the next film screening will take place, search for “Lan caster’s Hidden TreasureThe Rocky Springs Dentzel Carousel” on Facebook.

Billings, who was crowned as this year’s Miss Red Rose City, presented a jazz-influenced dance routine to the song “Never Gonna Not Dance Again” by Pink. Billings said she chose this particular song due to how deeply its lyrics and title resonated with her; the 2023 Solanco High School graduate has been dancing for 15 years, and she currently works as an assistant coach at Debbie School of Dance in Quarryville. Billings also discussed her service initiative, Chiari Malformation Awareness, which she created to educate

people on a rare condition she was diagnosed with in 2020. Billings said her goal is to use her platform as Miss Red Rose City to raise awareness of the condition and share her personal experience with it.

Krier, Ridler, and Davis were awarded the titles of Miss Heart of Lancaster, Miss Red Rose City’s Teen and Miss Lancaster County’s Teen, respectively.

The scholarship contest is coordinated by the Miss Lancaster County Scholarship Organization. The program seeks to empower young women across the nation by providing them with a platform to share their input on critical topics and hone various leadership skills as they compete for scholarship awards.

Mountwaybia Club to mark centennial

The Mountwaybia Club is marking its 100th year of existence. Founded in 1924 by Mrs. Helen Breneman, the club originally drew its members from Columbia and Mountville and along the Lincoln Highway which connects them. While the geographic area has since widened, the club continues to provide a forum for women to read books and research pertinent topics, and present the results during meetings in members’ homes.

Following club tradition, the current meeting year will conclude with a tea in May. Club members are in search of descendants of former and deceased Mountwaybia members who may have memories of the involvement of their

mothers, grandmothers, great-grandmothers, or aunts in the club. Descendants are asked to contact Joanna at 717-653-2019 or Deanna at 717-490-0111 by Friday, April 5, to share their recollections of the club.

Charter members of the club included Mrs. J.W. Zehring, Mrs. Michael Rorabaugh, Mrs. W.K. Kendig, Mrs. Oliver Fridy, Miss Louella Fridy, Miss Elizabeth Weaver, Mrs. Clarence Gable, Mrs. Elinor White, Mrs. A.J. Greenleaf, Mrs. A.G. Hess, Mrs. Edward Edgerly, and Mrs. Frank Hege. More recent former members include Mrs. Mary Katharine Horn, Mrs. R. Clark McCachren, Mrs. W.D. Linkous, Mrs. Donald Kresge, Mrs. Evelyn Schultz, and Mrs. Harry Smoker.

The series will seek to answer the question “What can we learn about following Jesus as individuals and as a community in 2024 and in the midst of our own empires from these seven letters written to these seven churches around

Workshop to focus on native plants

Penn State Extension will host a Choose Native Mini-Workshop live webinar on Tuesday, April 16, at 6 p.m. The mini workshop will focus on replacing invasive species with those native to Pennsylvania in landscapes and water gardens.

Landscaping and water gardening activities often lead to the unintended introduction and spread of invasive plant species to natural lands and waterways. Once established, invasive

species can degrade natural habitats by outcompeting native species for space, light, and nutrients. Invasive species can impact the food web by altering the plant community and decreasing the diversity of plants available for food sources, habitat, and shelter. The workshop will introduce participants to native species options and creative ways to include native species in landscapes and aquatic designs. This mini-workshop is

hosted by Pennsylvania Sea Grant and Penn State Extension with a special guest presentation by Native Creations Landscaping Services. The event is offered at no charge through funding from the Richard King Mellon Foundation and the Great Lakes Commission.

Registration is required at https://tinyurl.com /ChooseNativeMini Workshop. Registrants will also receive access to the webinar recording.
