East Petersburg PTO to hold festival

The Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO) of East Petersburg Elementary School, 5700 Lemon St., East Petersburg, will host a spring festival on Friday, May 5, from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. The rain-orshine event will be free to attend and will include a variety of games, live entertainment, prize drawings and food trucks.

All things Pennsylvania

Community members are invited to discover or rediscover many of the events, museums, attractions and getaways that Pennsylvania has to offer at the fifth annual PA Family Travel Fair, to be held on Saturday, April 15, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Calvary Church in Lancaster. The event, hosted by Where & When Pennsylvania, will also feature children’s activities, entertainment and food.

Those who visit the travel fair will also have opportunities to win prizes, including vacation packages. “The first 500 (attendees) will get a goodie bag to collect all of their swag from all of the vendors,” said Rachel Stebbins, marketing director at Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc., one of the

event organizers. “There is a lot of opportunity throughout the event to register for prizes. Almost all of the vendors are bringing prizes to give away.” The grand prize will be a family getaway provided by the Endless Mountains Visitors Bureau.

The event focuses on providing information about family-friendly activities that are available throughout the entire state, including locally in Lancaster County and as far away as the northern tier of Pennsylvania.

“When you are talking to vendors, they are not trying to sell you things. They are just providing information,” Stebbins emphasized. “The visitor’s bureaus will represent a lot of the (sites) in their areas, but we also have (representatives of) specific attractions that are coming to talk specifically about their places.”

Entertainment will include a magic show at noon by Papa Tater Magical Family Entertainment and a live show at 2 p.m. by Clyde Peeling’s Reptiland. Echo the Bat from Lincoln Caverns and Chipper from Herr Foods Inc. will greet visitors, and the Kids Cookie Break radio show will be on-site doing live interviews. Visitors will also be able to meet friendly service dogs from Keystone Pet Enhanced Therapy Services (KPETS).

Food trucks will be available offering breakfast and lunch, as well as snacks and ice cream. New this year will be Joe on the GO Coffee Co., which will offer coffee, tea and breakfast selections.

Stebbins hopes that people will attend the event to learn about local attractions they may not even

be aware of. “It’s nice to have options with what you can do without having to travel really far,” she stated. “You can have a nice, long weekend or you can go out and do some of these activities and be home at night because it’s just that close. People often don’t realize what is right around them.”

Calvary Church is located at 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster. Admission to and parking at the PA Family Travel Fair are free. The event will be held rain or shine. For more information, including a complete list of exhibitors, food trucks, activities and giveaways, visit www.pafamilytravel.com. More information is also available at www.facebook.com/PAFamily TravelFair and www.instagram.com /pafamilytravelfair

To participate in the games, attendees of the festival will need to purchase tickets on the day of. For each game, the players will have a chance to earn prize tickets, which may be exchanged at the end of the festival for rewards such as stuffed animals, stickers, temporary tattoos and food items. The prize drawing will include a selection of items donated by local businesses as well as themed gift baskets from different classrooms at East Petersburg Elementary.

Many of the offered activities will return from last year’s festival, including the tic-tac-toe toss and the spinning prize wheel. The cake walk, a community favorite, will return as well. During the game, players move across 10 to 15 numbered spaces as music is playing. Once the music stops, each player remains on his or her current space, and a number is picked at random. The player on the space with the corresponding number is awarded a cake.

Before Ryan Gardina was killed in 2004, he was working as a patient care assistant in the intensive care unit of Lancaster General Hospital. Prior to that, he was a medic in the U.S. Navy. After Ryan died, his friend Amanda Yost approached his mother, Susan, about starting a scholarship in his memory. “You have to do positive things to get through things like (losing a son),” Susan said.

Ryan had been attending HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, in hopes of later matriculating at Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences. An annual scholarship in his name was first established in 2005 to benefit a nursing student at the school.

“We did a lot of fundraisers at first,” said Susan, who, with Ryan’s father, Jim, recalled the donations received from family and friends and the sub sales that were held. Three years ago, a golf tournament was started to raise money for the scholarship. The 2023 Ryan Gardina Memorial Golf Fundraiser will be held on Friday, May 19, at Four Seasons Golf Club, 949 Church St., Landisville, with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. Prize holes will include the longest drive and closest to the pin, and mulligans will be available for purchase.

In addition to prizes and giveaways, a silent auction featuring donations from local businesses will be held. Among the items going up for bids is an overnight stay at Great Wolf Lodge with a tour of ShawneeCraft Brewing Company. Other items are a day of golf and hundreds of dollars in gift cards. Susan mentioned gift cards to the Lititz Springs Inn, Bulls Head Public House, and Barnstormers events among the items. Sponsors include Mainspring of Ephrata and The Risser Group.

Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences chooses the scholarship winner, but Jim noted the applicants are asked to write an essay about what compassion means to them. “We requested that since Ryan was compassionate,” Jim explained.

Early on, family members would read the essays and choose the top

three. “You could feel Ryan in the essays we picked,” said Susan.

The golf tournament roster usually fills up quickly. Readers who want to take part in the tournament should register by emailing jimgardina@gmail.com by Monday, May 1. More information may be found at www.ryangardinamemorial.com.

Knights defeat Falcons in lacrosse opener

The Hempfield boys’ lacrosse team raised its record to 2-0 with a decisive 16-3 defeat of Cedar Crest on Tuesday, March 28. In the Lancaster-Lebanon League Section One clash, the Black Knights built an insurmountable 11-0 lead in the first period.

The match featured two hat tricks by Jason Hilton and Toby Marco who also dished out two assists.

Having a hand in five of Hempfield’s goals didn’t belong to only Marco and Hilton. Zack Antesberger scored two goals in addition to dishing three assists.

Carsten Rankin, Talin Baer and Julian Morales scored twice each. While Dylan Ahiskog and Cole Gibbons each netted one goal, Isaiah Martin, and Phil Krauser each had one assist.

Holding down the net was Aidan French, who grabbed one save in the victory, which was Hempfield’s first in league play.

The Knights were coming off a 76 non-league win at Central York on Wednesday, March 22. Morales threw in a hat trick with Hilton adding two goals. Krauser and Gibbons each chipped in with one goal. Antesberger and Marco recorded one assist each.

Gabe Colon-Munoz snagged 12 saves for Hempfield.

TRACK

In a Section One track meet on Monday, March 27, the Hempfield girls fell to Manheim Township 8457 while the boys’ team, thanks to seniors Aidan Hodge, Tate Martin, Joseph Fahrney, and Carson Lieberman, defeated the visiting Streaks 99-42.

Martin captured both the 300meter hurdles and the high hurdles for Hempfield. In the middle-distance runs, Hodge ran the 1,600-m at a 4:35.2 pace to earn first place.

He also won the 800m while Fahrney outran the competition in the 3,200 at a 9:44.3 pace.

Leiberman dashed to victory in the 400 at 55.3 seconds.

Each of the six field events in the boys’ meet went to a different Hempfield athlete.

Jordan Thode tossed the discus a distance of 125 feet 3 inches to claim that event. Junior Deyvid Palepale’s shot put distance of 41-9 was tops on the day. Peter Wentzel (145-5) won the javelin while Andy Garcia’s 19-0.5 long jump and fellow senior Tanner Dennis’s triple jump of 39-8 also earned firsts.

Edward Asadu won the high jump at 5-4.

Molly Siebert’s time of 2:34.8 claimed the girls’ 800-m while freshman Annabella Heisey sprinted to victory in the 200 at 28.36 seconds. Ellison Wolfe won the 3,200 in 11:21.4

The Black Knights swept the hurdles with Arianaliz Olivencia taking the high hurdles and Julia Sweigart the 300s.

Nychl Griffin-Cunningham won the triple jump (31-15).

SOFTBALL

Though the Hempfield offense was unable to manufacture any runs in its season opener at New Oxford on March 14, Carley Ernst gave the Knights a stellar pitching performance.

“We lost 2-0 to New Oxford even though Carley struck out 15 batters,” head coach Chris Landis pointed out.

Landis, a first-year head coach, is looking forward to what he calls “...a new era in Hempfield softball.

“We have brand new uniforms and a brand-new culture with our program,” he added. “We are very young with only one senior, four juniors, five sophomores and two freshmen on the varsity team.”

Ernest is one of two returning L-L League all-stars along with Avery Landis.

“Last season Carley had 80 strikeouts in only 61 innings,” added the coach.

The Black Knights’ next game was a 10-0 loss to Shippensburg - a game that had a few players absent.

“We got hit by the stomach bug and had to play at Shippensburg without our top two pitchers,” explained Landis.

BASEBALL

Hempfield manufactured two runs in a game dominated by solid pitching Tuesday, March 28. The Knights visited Governor Mifflin, losing the non-league baseball game 3-2.

Mustangs’ hurlers Alex Velez and Tyler Minick combined to allow only two hits while striking out 11 batters. Minick earned the save for Velez. Velez also drove in the eventual game-winner on a double that chased Minick home with an unearned run in the fifth inning.

Meanwhile, Hempfield’s Hunter Williams allowed only four hits and struck out six batters without allowing a walk. He went five innings and was tagged with the tough loss, giving up only two earned runs.

Stephen Katch provided solid relief, striking out the side in the bottom of the sixth.

Hempfield manufactured a firstinning run when Katch grounded out to drive in Charles Sheerer, who had one of Hempfield’s two base hits.

After the Mustangs had taken a 2-1 lead in the home half of the first, the Knights tied the score when Brayden Hostetter singled, and Aiden Rodenberger walked. With the two base runners advancing on a perfect sacrifice bunt by Logan Harelson, Hostetter scored on a wild pitch.

VOLLEYBALL

With 11 kills and three service aces by Aiden Beiler, the Hempfield boys’ volleyball team opened its 2023 season with a 3-0 victory at Section One rival Penn Manor on Tuesday, March 28.

The Knights topped the Comets 25-17 25-20 and 25-19, getting 30 assists from Cole Jackson and 14 digs by Brady Rigard.

Also helping the defense was Ethan Earhart with two solo blocks.

GIRLS LACROSSE

The girls’ lacrosse team scored 35 goals in its first two games, darting out of the gate with a 2-0 start.

In the 17-2 trouncing of Central York on March 22, the leading scorers were Isabelle Masengarb and Whitney Hershey with six goals each. Natalie Bole put up a hat trick while Mia Brennan tallied two goals and two assists.

Masengarb netted five goals and Hershey added four in the 18-3 win at Cedar Crest on Tuesday, March 28. Bole (4 g, 1 asst) also led the way.

Lexi Mehaffey scored twice while Brennan, Lucy DeHoff and Hattie Mack netted one each.

Isabella LaVenice was the winning goalie in both matches.

TENNIS

In a non-league tennis match, Hempfield topped Central York on Tuesday, March 28.

Playing on their home court, the Knights improved to 3-0 on the year with the 4-1 home victory, sweeping the singles matches in straight sets.

In doubles action, Ben Curtin and Tristan Coyne tossed aside their opponents 6-4, 6-4. Will Keppel and Ryan Malesic came up just short at number one doubles, 3-6, 5-7.

Cooper Lehman took the number one singles 6-2, 6-0. Eric Jordan (6-2, 6-2) and Andre Hurst (6-0, 6-1) also won their singles matches.

The previous Wednesday, the Knights won their first league match of the year, topping Penn Manor 6-1.

Lehman and Jordan not only teamed up for an 8-2 win at first doubles, but they also won the first two singles matches - both with 6-1, 6-1 straight sets. Lehman won the first singles and Jordan the second. Hurst blanked Grant Rost 6-0, 6-0 at number three and Sam Keener won at number four, 6-1, 6-2.

In the third doubles, Keppel and Gavin Chamberlain won 82. The one Penn Manor point came at number two doubles where Rost and Bill Steitz edged Malesic and Hurst 8-5.

Food and beverages will be available to purchase from G’s Concessions during the event. Frozen treats will also be sold by Mr. Ice Cream Kid, operated by a young entrepreneur from the Landisville area.

“Our main focus is for kids and their families to have some fun,” said Michelle Brenneman of the East Petersburg Elementary PTO. “We want to offer some things that are free, but we also might raise some money for the school.”

The festival has been a tradition at East Petersburg Elementary School for decades; many of the parents in the PTO attended the event when they were children. The PTO utilizes the funds raised by the festival in a variety of ways, such as paying for school field trips, assemblies,

classroom supplies and school staff appreciation. The festival also serves as a fun way for students to start to conclude the academic year and usher in their summer vacations.

The festival is operated by members of the PTO as well as many volunteers from the community,

Tenebrae, which in Latin means “darkness” or “shadows,” is an ancient service held during Holy Week to evoke the emotional aspect of Jesus’ death on the cross and prepare people’s heart for the celebration of His resurrection on Easter. The one-hour, candlelight service features seating in the round with an 8-foot cross in the center of the 400-seat auditorium. It is characterized by seven “movements” of song, Scripture reading, and the extinguishing of a candle. At the completion of the seven movements, the room is mostly dark and the service closes with a “strepitus,” or “loud noise.” Attendees leave in quiet contemplation of Christ’s atoning work on the cross on behalf of humanity.

All are also invited to return to CFC for Easter services on Saturday, April 8, at 6 p.m. or on Sunday, April 9, at 8:30, 10, or 11:30 a.m. Pastor Bobby Parschauer will presented the message, titled “Jesus Revealed” looking, in light of the Resurrection, to the living Christ as described in Revelation 1.

Event to launch book focused on chronic illness

A book launch for “Invincible: Finding the Light Beyond the Darkness of Chronic Illness” will be held on Wednesday, April 12, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Our Town Brewery, 252 N. Prince St., Lancaster.

In “Invincible,” Anne Schober, Mollie Ayers, and 26 other people share their stories of having a chronic illness. The stories explore anger, denial, and grief through acceptance, triumphs, and joys.

The idea for the book was born

after Schober posted on social media about living with rheumatoid arthritis. When she returned to the post a few days later, she found that it had garnered more than 500 comments and responses.

Among those who contacted Schober was Ayers, who also has an “invisible” illness and wanted to help Schober create an inspirational book on the topic. Schober and Ayers got in touch with others who had commented on Schober’s post

and invited them to also share their stories in “Invincible.”

Copies of the book will be available to purchase at the launch. Books will also be available for purchase at www.invincible2023.com starting on Thursday, April 13.

For more information, email invin ciblethebook@gmail.com, search for invincible_the_book on Instagram or Invincible the Book on Facebook, or, starting Tuesday, April 11, visit the aforementioned website.
