In February, when parts of Texas were hit by a fluke snowstorm, Aaron Fisher and David Lapp, CEOs of Blessings of Hope (BOH), a wholesale food bank located on Becker Road in Leola, decided to send Fisher to the greater Dallas-Fort Worth area with a tractor-trailer load of food and water through their Hands of Hope program.
Although Fisher thought he would only be gone a few days, over the next two weeks, 12 tractor-trailer loads of food boxes containing fruit, vegetables, milk, yogurt, and other food items, along with skids of water, traveled from Leola to Texas. Fisher remained in the Lone Star State to oversee distribution. “Food and water was what they needed,” recalled Fisher, who added that trailers went to Houston and Austin as well. “They had no electric or water, so water was in high demand.”
Outreaches like shipping 294,600 pounds of food to Texas are made possible by fundraisers like the iCare event BOH has planned for Friday, May 28, and Saturday, May 29, at 1850 Diamond Station Road, Ephrata. The outdoor event will begin at 5:30 p.m. on May 28 and at 6:30 a.m. on May 29.
The May 28 fundraiser, which will be designed to appeal to members of the Plain community, will include an a capella concert, a banquet, and guest speaker Daniel Beiler, who spent two years in Iraq working with refugees and local government officials. To become an iCare sponsor or purchase tickets, which are necessary to attend the May 28 event, email admin@blessingsofhope.com or call 717-824-1227.
Organizers described the May 29 event as a cross between a fair and a mud sale. Both 5K and 10K runs will be held beginning at 8 a.m., and a volleyball tournament will take place during the day. More information on registering for these competitions may be found at www.blessings ofhope.com. Four different auctions will take place during the day, and food items will be available for purchase for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, along with a drive-through food option. In the evening, a bydonation concert will be held.
Blessings of Hope was started in 2006, when Lapp and Fisher began using a garage in Farmersville to store and redistribute food that was being wasted and that they knew could be used to feed people in Lancaster County and beyond. Eventually, the ministry developed relationships with more than 80 food producers and began acting as a bank to collect and redistribute food to pantries, outreaches, halfway houses, and ministries, along with Hands of Hope food box distributions.
Volunteers collect and pack food items at Blessings of Hope, a wholesale food bank in Leola.
Paper Shredding Event Planned
The Anchor Club of Hempfield High School and its sponsor, Pilot Club of Lancaster, will hold a contactless paper shredding event on Saturday, April 10, from 10 a.m. to noon.
Vehicles will pull into the Hempfield High School parking lot at 200 Stanley Ave., Landisville, and items will be removed for onsite shredding. Paper should be placed in cardboard boxes or other such containers, as containers will not be returned.
Donations will benefit youth leadership opportunities and brain-related community projects of the Pilot Club. For further information, call Jean at 717-392-3375.

Camp will be open for eight weeks this summer beginning Sunday, June 13. Overnight camp will be available for students in grades two through 12, and day camp will be open to children in grades one through six. BRR offers financial assistance and awards scholarships every year so that underprivileged children can
go to camp. Registration opened in December 2020. “Registration is filling up, which is great to see!” said Fiorello. “In spite of everything, we had a great summer last year, so we’re hoping to go back to normal in some capacity this summer.” For the first time ever, BRR has partnered with the semiprofessional Christian soccer team the Charlotte Eagles. BRR will host a soccer day camp this summer for children in grades one through eight from Monday to Friday, July 26 to 30. “The Charlotte Eagles do ministry work in the States and overseas, so we’re really fortunate that some of the trainers will come here to work with the kids,” said Fiorello. The Donegal Fish and Conservation Association (DFCA) needs you. The organization is holding its membership drive to grow its base and raise funds for its projects.
In a typical year, DFCA would hold two major fundraising events - its outdoor show and kids’ fishing derby. With COVID restrictions, the group could not hold either event this past year. Instead, the organization had to think up new ways to raise funds.
“We set up a new website, www.donegalcreek.org, for people to make a minimum donation of $10,” Crouser noted. “Upon receiving their donation, we send out a membership pin and card as well as add them to the email list for future events like work parties, meetings and trout stocking the Donegal and Little Chiques creeks.”
DFCA meetings are held the third Monday of every month, either at Amato’s Woodfire Pizza and Italian Restaurant in Mount Joy or, in warmer weather, at the East Donegal Township Chickies Creek Day Use Area.
Crouser added that the membership drive has a goal of $3,000. “That’s the number we’d like to get to in order to be able to stock and maintain our trout nursery, pay our electric bill and cover other expenses,” he explained. The nursery is a cooperative project with the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission.
