By Dayna M. Reidenouer
In 2004, dancers Jennifer Berlet and Cynthia Nehr, along with a dance student and several of their friends, formed NetCo Dance Company. “NetCo” stands for “Network of Community.” “More than 30 people from all around Lancaster County have been involved as members over the years. They come from various backgrounds. Most everybody has a dance background, but we’ve had people who do martial arts or are competition cheerleaders,” Berlet said. She pointed out that early dance troupes attempted to make everyone look and dance the same, but NetCo was created to be different. “I look very much at the individual, their personality and charisma. I want them to be themselves doing the movement. Diversity strengthens the community.” Because of the diversity of participants, NetCo shows use ballet technique as their basis, but with a modern dance twist. Accompaniment tends to lean toward instrumental, with compositions by Philip Glass, Glenn Kotche, and others. Berlet described NetCo shows as avant-garde, quirky, and somewhat feminist, while having a social justice outlook. For the company’s grand performance on Saturday, April 27, a

“ When my girls were teenagers, we heard of ‘If You Find This Letter,’” said Deanna Riccardelli, a member of More Love Letters Lancaster, referring to a memoir by Hannah Brencher, who began writing letters to strangers in New York City when she found herself struggling emotionally. “She would write the kinds of things s h e w a n t e d t o h e a r ,” e x p l a i n e d R i c cardelli, noting that Brencher found that sharing and encouraging others helped her out of her own depression. Holy Spirit Lutheran Church, 3131 Columbia Ave., Lancaster, will begin the observance of Holy Week at the 9:30 a.m. worship service on the Sunday of the Passion/Palm Sunday on April 14. The congregation will gather for the blessing of the palms and then process together into the worship space. The service will also include the reading of the Passion story from the Gospel of St. Luke. According to the Rev. Clifton D. Eshbach,
nation on civil rights on June 11, 1963, will accompany the dance. “It was right when three black students were going to attend the University of Alabama and needed protection,” Berlet said. She expressed her frustration that race issues are still a part of today’s culture. “We still see a divided nation,” she said. “But when you strip away … all the adjectives to describe people, we’re pretty much the same underneath.” Another piece, titled “Tunnel Vision,” will be a truly multimedia production, with the use of music, video, and confetti. The images will highlight the Berlin Wall, Ellis Island, and the #MeToo movement, asking the question, “How far have we really come?” “We get fixated on one point and everything else disappears,” Berlet commented. “I think there are lots of other issues that need to be addressed. If we open our eyes and looking into the periphery, we can see other solutions.” As 2019 marks the 15th anniversary of NetCo’s forming, Berlet said the creation of “Moving Past” was a direct response to the company’s first show, “Moving Toward Yourself.” “That show was more personal,” she stated. “Now, this show has a broader scope, and I’m moving past myself.” “Moving Past” will be performed at 7:30 p.m. on April 27 at the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster. The doors will open at 7 p.m. Seating is by reservation only, and tickets may be purchased by visiting www.ArtsMU.com. Proceeds from the event will be used to produce future shows, and Berlet is already planning auditions for next season. They will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 27, at Evolution Power Yoga, 515 Harrisburg Ave., Lancaster. Riccardelli agreed. “In your mailbox, you have bills, flyers, and junk, but when you find something personally handwritten in there … it’s super exciting to see,” she said. “We keep talking about times in our lives when people have sent us letters,” noted Riccardelli. “I have received letters from strangers. You wouldn’t think that could be encouraging, but it can be.” Knepper noted that she has cherished letters that were sent to her after her father died. When the two women and Riccardelli’s son, Levi, met on Feb. 22, one of the letters they wrote was to a veteran who was struggling with post-traumatic stress disorder. “We are sitting here trying not to weep over this one letter,” said Riccardelli. Knepper noted that there are benefits to the letter writers as well as the recipients. “What (Brencher) did was therapeutic,” noted Knepper. “On our end it is too.” “It gives you perspective in life,” added Riccardelli. Although the groups has been meeting in the mornings, Knepper noted that some evening meetings may be set in order to allow more interested people to take part. Children are welcome as long as parents bring along quiet activities to keep the children occupied. Readers who would like to learn more may search for “More Love Letters Lancaster” on Facebook or Instagram.

that More Love Letters had met. The group, which Knepper noted usually includes up to seven individuals, moves its meeting location in order to support local businesses. “Today we wrote letters to those people listed on the website,” noted Riccardelli, explaining that the individuals on the More Love Letters website are nominated by others who write down the nominees’ stories. Six letter recipients are chosen each month. “Last month the group focused on people in the local community who could use encouragement,” explained Riccardelli, who added that the group would love to receive nominations of area residents who could benefit from an uplifting letter. “We have watched for (people) in the news. It doesn’t have to be something major,” shared Riccardelli, who added that someone who has broken a leg and is housebound might appreciate a letter. Recipients might also receive a letter that is more congratulatory than consoling. “If they are doing something amazing, we tell them, ‘We see you and appreciate what you’re doing,’” said Riccardelli. Knepper emphasized the significance of a handwritten letter in a time when texting and email are more often the methods by which people communicate. “We always connected with writing, and we’ve lost that,” she said.

Hempfield Tops Warwick in Boys’ Lax Action by Ara Grigorian
The Hempfield boys’ lacrosse team reached double-digits in scoring for the sixth time this season in a 10-4 win at home versus Warwick last Monday. The Knights improved their record to 4-0 in Section One on Friday as they topped Elizabethtown with another double-digit effort, 20-4 on the road.

Hempfield goalie Matty Weist clears the ball after making one his 11 saves in the Black Knights’ 10-4 Section One win over Warwick last Monday in Landisville.
In the Warwick game, the defense was tough on the Warriors, allowing only one goal in each of the second and third quarters. Hempfield took a 5-1 lead into halftime and added three more in the third quarter. “Our defense is much better than it was last year,” remarked head coach Matt McAlpine, who gave credit also to the Knights’ defensive coach. “Dave Esbenshade coming on board and bringing in a detail-oriented mindset has helped us out,” he said. Defenders Jackson Shand, Patrick Schmidt and Grayson Haski have been building Hempfield’s reputation as a tough defensive squad as well as long stick midfielders Kearen Miller and Colin Weist. Speaking of defense, freshman Matthew Weist was too good for the Warwick attack, making 11 saves at the Hempfield goal. Kohl Wesner found open shots for six goals. He also had one assist as did Cameron Aksu, who tallied two goals. Matt Heuston scored twice while Bobby Griffith dished out two assists. “Kohl Wesner is just very crafty,” McAlpine said. “He never comes at you the same way twice. He’s one of those kids who has a nose for the goal.” With eight goals in the first quarter and nine more before halftime, Hempfield had a commanding 17-2 lead at intermission on Friday at E-town. Griffith and Wesner each scored five goals.
“The thing I’m proud of him [Wesner] about is that he had six assists,” McAlpine said. “People know that he can score, but when he starts distributing the ball, it makes us that much better. “We really challenged our attackmen to play with their eyes up and distribute the ball well,” continued the coach. “Matt Heuston, Bobby Griffith and Grayson Dague can shoot the ball well, but we’re also looking for them to find open space.” Distributing the ball well came in the form of seven assists for Aksu in the E-town game. Bryce Witmer (1a) and Jacob Notoli each notched a hat trick while Heuston finished with two goals and two assists. Other scoring came from Griffith (1g, 2a), Dague (1g, 2a) and Tyler Gearhart (1g). Matthew Weist played the first half in goal and was relieved in the second half by junior Brad Green. “We’re trying to rotate some different guys in,” explained McAlpine. “Whoever has the hot hand is going to get more playing time.” TENNIS In a busy week of tennis matches, the Black Knights posted a 2-2 record. The Knights opened with a 6-1 win at Warwick on Monday but suffered a 6-1 loss to Cocalico two days later. In addition they split non-league matches against Dallastown and Governor Mifflin.
The only Warwick point came at number three doubles where Elijah Worley and fellow freshman Trent Meyers made their opponents earn a 10-8 victory. Dillon Otto and Nishant Balepur were 8-1 winners at first doubles. Nolan Deck and Alex Cooke claimed the number two doubles 8-0. Balepur won at number two singles in straight sets of 6-0, 6-1. Otto, Deck and Cooke each won their singles matches 6-0, 6-0. Balepur and Otto stayed strong in their doubles match at Cocalico before Danny Engle and Collin Hall finally won 8-6. The Eagles edged Deck and Cooke 8-4 in the second doubles. Balepur came up short against Hall in the singles match. He won 6-3 in the first set only to lose 6-4 and 10-7. Deck also played a tough second set at number three singles, losing 7-5, while Cooke claimed the fourth singles 6-2, 6-1. Dallastown topped Hempfield 5-0 but the Knights didn’t go down easily. At first doubles Cooke and Adeet Parikh won the second set 6-3 - sandwiched between Wildcat wins of 7-6 (7-2) and 10-8. Balepur lost a close match at second singles, 6-3 and 7-5. The 4-1 win over Gov. Mifflin featured Cooke and Parikh’s 6-1, 6-0 doubles win plus straight set wins by Deck (6-1, 6-0), Balepur (6-1, 6-1) and Otto (6-0, 6-1) in singles.
TRACK & FIELD The Hempfield girls’ team lost 85-64 to Cedar Crest in a Section One meet on Monday. The Crest boys’ stopped Hempfield 106-44 as both Hempfield squads fell to 0-2. The girls’ team claimed the two sprints thanks to Sara Olujic winning the 100-meter dash in 12.3 and Cahsia Page the 200 in 25.4. In the 300 hurdles it was Bella Hollenbach taking first at 52.1 while the 4x400 relay team of Delaney Minder, Isabella Schwalm, Marissa Martin, and Olujic posted a winning time of 4:22.0. Ava Hostetler’s 15-foot-11 long jump was also good for first.
Tanner Hess, who was part of the boys’ 4x400 relay victory with Will Yaeger, Casey Deck and Jack Mieszkalski, won the 200 (22.8) and the 400 (51.5). Jaden Lopez won the javelin with a 134-3 toss. BASEBALL Hempfield stayed atop the Section One standings at 4-0 (6-1 overall) with victories at home over Penn Manor and Warwick. Cole Houser and C.J. Saylor sparked the offense by reaching base in the home half of the first inning on Monday. Nick Fiore singled in one of the two runs that inning. Two more runs came in in the fourth

Skylar Constable (2-for-6) also had a steal as did Katie Beamesderfer. Warwick scored four in the bottom of the first and added seven in the fourth inning on Wednesday. The Knights did have two two-run innings late in the game. Berardi recorded a double and three RBIs. Kendall Fruchti went 2-for-3 with a run. Freshman Olivia Cover added a run scoring triple and scored one herself. In Saturday’s non-league doubleheader, Turner’s three-hit complete
game effort helped Hempfield beat Gov. Mifflin 3-1. She struck out nine batters. The Mustangs finally got on the board in the sixth. Turner also doubled to drive in a run. Beamesderfer went 2-for-3 with a triple. Rankin drove in a run as well. Constable went 1-for-3 with a run. Senior Cara Mahoney drove in the lone Hempfield run in a 4-1 loss to Dallastown in the second game of the twin bill. She drove in Rankin, who had tripled. Raihl started and completed this game, striking out seven batters and walking four while allowing only three hits. The Knights outhit the Wildcats 7-3.
VOLLEYBALL Hempfield won its third Section One match of the season, defeating Conestoga 3-0 (25-16, 25-22, 25-11). Ben Crabtree led the Knights with 11 kills, four aces and eight digs while returning junior Colsen Hunt had a match-high 34 assists and tied Crabtree with eight digs. victories over Warwick, Elizabethtown and Lancaster Country Day. The Knights improved to 6-1 (5-0 league). In the 16-4 win at Warwick on Monday, the Knights out-shot the Warriors 24-7. Lizzie Yurchak’s five-goal performance led the way while Lindsey Durkota, with five assists, Kelsea Dague and Laura Morrison each notched a hat trick. Regan Gillisse and Lauren Dague, who also had an assist, each scored one. The 19-3 defeat of E-town included a five-goal production by Durkota while Lauren Dague poured in four goals and assisted twice. Yurchak also scored four times. Kelsea Dague, with a hat trick, Gillisse with two goals and Brynn Axe with one, also contributed. Morrison and Haylee Eide each had one assist. Cassidy Roark (4 saves) and Kyah Peifer (3 saves) handled the job in goal. Hempfield actually trailed Lancaster Country Day 5-4 at halftime. The home team outscored the Cougars 9-4 in the second half to earn a 13-9 win on Friday night. Yurchak was relentless with six goals and an assist. Lauren Dague and Kelsea Dague combined for seven goals. Axe added an assist. Roark recorded three saves and Peifer five.

doubled, and Seth Constein’s RBI single. The Knights went on to top Penn Manor 8-0 as senior Justin Lichtenwalner pitched a one-hit shutout, striking out eight. The one base hit in the second inning prevented him from recording a perfect game. The 6-4 win versus Warwick found the Knights trailing 2-0 on a pair of unearned runs in the first. Alec Santiago’s two-run single tied the game in the home half, driving in Fiore and Houser, and later scored on a hit by Vaughn. Later in the game, the Knights took advantage of Warwick wildness, drawing two walks after Lichtenwalner’s single. LaBarbera’s sac fly and two more walks gave the Knights a comfortable lead. Vaughn earned the victory as junior Andrew Blough came on in the seventh inning to calm the storm, saving the game while Warwick was staging a rally. SOFTBALL Hempfield raised its record to 5-2 on a week that included two Section One games and two non-league opponents. An extra-inning win at Penn Manor on Monday and an 11-5 loss to Warwick on Wednesday gives the Knights a 3-1 league record. The Knights scored four times in the top of the eighth at Manor to claim an 11-7 win. Gabi Turner allowed only one earned run as she pitched a complete game, striking out eight. At the plate, she doubled and homered, knocking in three runs.
we played well in two of the three games,” head coach Mike Vogel said. “We had decent production from Givens and Crabtree. “We had the middle attack going against Conestoga Valley,” he added. “Eldin Lupic had a good match. Ryan Givens is a first-year middle.” As for first-year varsity players, Vogel has quite a few. “We lost six seniors last year, so we’re going through some growing pains,” he explained. “We rotate Lupic, Givens and Elliott De La Torre in the middle. Alex Drager is our new libero and he’s doing quite well. On the outside we have Adam Brossman and Owen Hanzelman. Crabtree only served last year; he’s serving as our opposite this year.” Hempfield fell to 3-1 in Section One with a loss at Warwick (3-0) on Thursday night. The Warriors won the first two sets, 25-20 and 25-18. Hempfield took the third one 25-12 until Warwick eked out a 25-23 win in set number four. Brossman had three aces while De La Torre registered 12 kills and three blocks. Drager tallied eight digs. GIRLS LACROSSE The Hempfield girls’ lacrosse teams tripled its opponents’ scoring output in a three-game span last week with an aggregate score of 48-16 in
