OnSaturday, April 22, Scouts BSA Troop 33 will host a pancake breakfast fundraiser at East Petersburg Church, 6279 Main St., East Petersburg. Breakfast will be served for a set cost per person from 6 to 11 a.m., and children under the age of

2 may dine for free. Tickets will be available to purchase at the door, and presale tickets will be available to purchase at a discounted price from members of the Scout troop until Friday, April 21.

Adult volunteers will prepare the f ood for the event, which will include pancakes, sausage, orange juice, coffee and tea. The Scouts’

primary duty will be to act as hosts and to serve the patrons, and many of the boys in the troop have sold tickets from door to door in preparation for the fundraiser.

This year’s fundraiser will be the first pancake breakfast that Troop 33 has organized since before the COVID-19 pandemic. Prior to the pandemic, the Scouts

held an annual pancake breakfast, a tradition that began over 30 years ago. “We got by without it, but it will be nice to have it again,” said Jim Dreyer, Scoutmaster for Troop 33. “It’s one of the largest fundraisers for our troop, and both the boys and borough residents are excited to bring it back.”

On Tuesday, April 18, Jessica W hipple of East Hempfield Township will release a children’s book titled “Enough Is …” A public event for the release will be held at Aaron’s Books, 35 E. Main St., Lititz, on Sunday, April 16, from 2 to 4:30 p.m. During the launch, W hipple will read excerpts from the book, sign copies and answer questions from the audience.

“Enough Is …” is illustrated by Nicole Wong and is published by Tilbury House, marking the first time that Whipple has had a book released through a publisher.

“Enough Is …” follows the story of a young girl who learns the difference between her wants and needs as she seeks to feel content. Whipple said that her goal when writing the book was to address an important topic that applies to those of any age, but in a way that kids can understand it.

“The book is about the concept of enough, contentment, trying to illustrate and explain to kids that it’s a tricky thing,” Whipple said.

“Embracing it can be uncomfortable, but hopefully the more times you experience it, the more comfortable you are with it.”

W hipple was inspired to write the book by her experiences as a parent. Many of the concepts that she touches on in her book are things that she has tried to impress upon her two daughters, See

who are now 10 and 7 years old. When her eldest was 3 years old and her other daughter was an infant, Whipple found herself struggling to simplify the idea of contentment to her children but also grappled with the idea in her own life with her own wants and needs. “I had to find that sweet spot of contentment,” Whipple said. “I hope that by the end of the book, readers will realize that it’s a feeling you can get used to.”

In August, Whipple will release a second book, titled “I Think I Think a Lot.” Her second published work focuses on the life of a child who wrestles with overthinking and anxiety. The protagonist constantly compares herself to others and feels inadequate, but she learns to appreciate what makes her unique and to see the positive sides of negative feelings. Although the book does not explicitly describe its main character as someone with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), the story draws from Whipple’s personal experience growing up with OCD. “There’s not really a lot out there about OCD that reads like a picture book. Growing up, I found the only resources are books from therapists and workbooks,” Whipple said. “‘I Think I Think a Lot’ brings that experience to normal life and beyond the therapist’s office, as a way to help kids view the world in a different way.”

Give the Gift of Time

Do you have a lifetime of experience as a mother or mentor and want to share that knowledge?

Are you looking for a one-on-one volunteer opportunity where you can make a meaningful and impactful difference in a young mother’s life?

If you answered YES, consider becoming a Sage Mentor.

Whipple, who is originally from Pittsburgh, moved to Lancaster in 2020. She first began writing poetry as a teenager and has spent the majority of her career working as a copywriter. After becoming a parent, she started to write poetry again and wanted to translate her work to a picture book format. “I think picture books are their own type of poetry; my different experiences as a writer have come together as I work on them,” Whipple said.

“Enough Is …” is available at independent bookstores as well as large retailers such as Barnes & Noble and Amazon. For more information, visit www.authorjessicawhipple.com.

The Black Knights came back from a 2-1 deficit to even their L-L League boys’ volleyball match at 2 sets apiece Tuesday night, April 4. In the fifth and tiebreaker set, however, Conestoga Valley eked out a 1512 set, winning the match 3-2 at Hempfield.

“We did what we were supposed to do,” Kenny Eiser, the Hempfield head coach said of that fourth set, which the Knights (2-1) won by a 25-18 margin. The Buckskins won two very close sets - 25-22 and 2523 - to go ahead 2-1 after the Knights had won the opening set 25-18.

“Conestoga was playing very

well,” Eiser added. “They played insane defense all night long. They converted on their digs.”

Aiden Beiler drilled 17 kills for the Knights. Michael Hester, Ethan Earhart, and Cole Jackson, who also racked up 53 assists, each registered three blocks.

“Can’t say enough about Cole,” Eiser commented. “He was thrust into the role of setter. He has been doing an amazing job. He was backup libero last year.”

Libero Brady Rigard served two aces and racked up 33 digs.

The Knights were coming off a 30 win (25-17, 25-20, 25-19) at Penn Manor the previous Thursday. In the match Beiler had 11 kills and three aces. Earhart tallied two blocks while Jackson distributed 30 assists. Rigard finished with 14 digs.

Asked about the tough competition for the Section One title, Eiser said, “It’s anybody’s league at this point. It can be anybody who comes to play and finds a team on an off night.”

BASEBALL

The Black Knights had already batted around with eight men having reached base in a nine-run first inning on Tuesday, April 3. The Knights went on to defeat McCaskey 14-3 in Section One baseball at J.K.

Mechanical Field

Josh Toole, Brayden Hostetter, Drew Banchich, Stephen Katch, Marcus Rivera and Charles Sheerer each drove in runs in the home half of the first inning.

Aiden Rodenberger’s two-run

double plus a Red Tornado passed ball increased the lead in the bottom of the second inning.

Hunter Williams pitched the first three innings of this mercy-rule game. He only faced 10 McCaskey batters, striking out three.

Dawson Kuhn and Ryan Jackson provided one inning of relief pitching each.

The nine-run theme also worked for the Knights back on Friday, March 31 as lefty Logan Harelson pitched six shutout innings in a 9-0 defeat of Spring Grove.

Harleson also helped himself with a sacrifice fly RBI. Benchich and Rodenberger each stroked RBI singles while Fiore drove in another with a sacrifice fly.

The biggest blow was a two-run homer by Katch.

GIRLS’ LACROSSE

The potent Hempfield scoring machine led by Isabelle Masengarb’s five goals stayed unbeaten in league play with a 13-6 victory at Conestoga Valley on Tuesday, April 4.

In addition, Whitney Hershey poured in four goals. Natalie Bole also scored multiple goals, scoring twice. Lexi Mehaffey and Hattie Mack each netted one goal.

Helping nail down the victory with her

stellar goalkeeping was Ella Ashton (5 saves).

Hempfield improved to 3-0 in league play and 5-1 overall. The one defeat happened on Monday as Twin Valley raided the Knights’ net 17 times in a 17-9 win.

Hershey’s five goals and Masengarb’s four accounted for the Hempfield scoring. Bole dished out two assists and Masengarb one.

Putting up 17 goals was a brief theme for these matches. Hempfield was coming off a 17-9 triumph at New Oxford on Thursday, March 30 with Bole thrashing the non-league rival’s net six times. Masengarb was also involved in six scores, assisting on three and scoring three of her own.

Hershey found the back of the net four times. Mia Brennan (1 g, 2 asst) was also involved in multiple scores. Mack, Aubrie Buckwalter and Ava Corvino each scored once while Ashton made four saves.

TENNIS

With a 5-0 defeat of Ephrata on the road Wednesday afternoon, April 5, the boys’ tennis team improved to 6-0 on the year.

In what was a non-league match, the two doubles pairings - Sam Keener and Ryan Malesic (6-2, 6-2) along with Will Keppel and Tristan Coyne (6-1, 6-1) triumphed easily.

Andre Hurst came through in straight sets (6-0, 6-1) at number one singles. Eric Jordan blanked Todd Weist 6-0, 6-0 and Cooper Lehman won the third singles easily 6-0, 6-2.

Keppel and Coyne won their number two doubles match in Tuesday’s Section One match against Warwick. The Knights topped the Warriors 6-1 with Malesic and Gavin Chamberlain coming up a bit short in the first doubles - an 8-5 win for Warwick.

Aaron Choi and Jack Magalski ran away with the third doubles 8-1.

Lehman and Jordan won their singles matches by 6-0, 6-1 straight sets. Hurst and Keener won third and fourth singles, respectively, both with 6-0, 6-0 scores.

The win was Hempfield’s third straight in league play. The Knights were coming off another 6-1 victory over a Section One rival - Conestoga Valley.

On the road on Thursday, March 30, the Knights again swept the singles matches in straight sets thanks to Lehman, Jordan, Hurst and Keener. In doubles play, Lehman and Jordan were victorious 8-0 as was the twosome of Coyne and Ben Curtin, 8-4.

BOYS’ LACROSSE

Hempfield topped Conestoga Valley 12-8 in L-L League boys’ lacrosse action on Tuesday, April 4 at Landisville.

Toby Marco was impressive with his five goals and two assists while Jason Hilton collected four goals and booked an assist.

In the divide and conquer offense, Zack Antesberger tallied two goals while assisting on three. Logan Klinger also came up with

two assists. Phillip Krauser rounded out the scoring with one goal. The Knights improved to 4-0.

TRACK

In high school track meets, how your relay teams place can have a great impact on the outcome of the meet.

“Both the girls’ and boys’ teams won all three relays,” head coach Curt Rogers pointed out, referring to the sweep of Penn Manor in the Section One meet Tuesday, April 4.

“Penn Manor had some really strong areas,” he added. “The relays did make a difference for us.”

The girls’ team won by an 89-61 score while the Hempfield boys triumphed 86-64 at Penn Manor.

Molly Siebert, Ella Wolfe, Hannah Kilheffer and 1,600-meter winner Roz Scott teamed up for a victory in the 4x800 relay. Seibert also claimed the open 800 and Wolfe went on to win the 3,200.

“Molly and Ella are also good team members of the cross country team,” Rogers pointed out.

Julia Sweigart anchored the 4x400 relay team with Iyrie Yoder, Izzy Heisey and Evelyn Sahd, who also won the 400.

“Izzy Heisey won the 100 and 200 in addition to being in 4x100 and 4x400 relays,” Rogers noted. In fact, Heisey won the 100 with a personal record 13.1 and the 200 with a 27.3 PR.

In the 4x100, Mya Thompson and Brook Smith joined Heisey and Sweigart for a winning effort. Sweigart took the 300 hurdles as well.

The javelin went to Yoder with a personal best 57-3. Junior Alex Shuffelbottom won the shot put. A few second- or third-place finishes were personal bests, including Kaylee Thompson’s 72-10 discus and Audra Koerner-Smith’s 7-6 pole vault. Sydney Rhoads had a 4-10 high jump.

Seniors Joe Fahrney and Aidan Hodge led the 4x800 relay, teaming with Spencer Ashba and Sam Friedman.

“Two of our senior runners who are headed to Division I schools are Joe Fahrney and Aiden Hodge,” Rogers said. “We have a strong distance group.”

Carson Lieberman joined Hodge, Freedman, and Ashba for the 4x400. Fahrney claimed the1600 with league best 4:33.9 time. In the 4x100 Eddie Asadu, Gabe Benjamin, Tate Martin, and Xavier Peralta posted a win. Martin also took second in the 300 hurdles and the 110 hurdles.

Benjamin posted a personal best, 24.1, in the 200, taking second. Pete Wenzel (155-7) won the javelin and Dayvid Palepale the shot put - both with personal bests.

Asadu had a personal best long jump of 20-1 and Jordan Thode (117-11) PR in the discus. Tanner Dennis (5-8) added a PR in the high jump.

Brody Weachter a PR in the pole vault at 13-6.

EXTERIORS ROOFING

The funds raised by the pancake breakfast support the troop in a variety of ways, such as covering operating costs, equipment maintenance and trip expenses. Once a month, the members of Troop 33 take a camping trip together, and every summer, the Scouts attend a camp at Horseshoe Scout Reservation in Rising Sun, Md.

Troop 33 has been an active BSA troop for 93 years and currently has 21 active members who are between 11 and 17 years old. In addition to taking camping trips as a group, the members of the troop often complete service projects within the community.

The troop’s regular service projects include raking leaves, spreading mulch, planting trees and painting houses. Even while on camping excursions, the Scouts often assist park rangers with cleaning up trails and campsites. “The kids will join Scouts at around 10 years old. At first, many of

them struggle socially, with group settings or sometimes just rolling up a sleeping bag,” Dreyer said. “Fast-forward four years and these young men are leaders, teaching the new Scouts what they’ve learned. It’s incredible to watch the growth.”

As Scoutmaster, Dreyer said that he tries to foster qualities of responsible citizens in his Scouts by teaching them skills that can also be applied outside of the program. He often encourages the members of Troop 33 to attend youth training courses, many of which are offered by BSA’s Pennsylvania Dutch Council and the Chester County Council. “We need responsible, young leaders in the world,” Dreyer said. “They’re the next generation, and we need to encourage leadership and a volunteering spirit in our young kids.”

Troop 33 is always accepting new members. For more information, visit http://padutchbsa.org.

Women’s Giving Circle to meet

Dayspring students explore fingerprinting and analysis using kits purchased by the Women’s Giving Circle to enhance the science program at the school.

Dayspring Christian Academy, 120 College Ave., Mountville, will host a Women’s Giving Circle membership meeting on Tuesday, April 18, at 8 a.m. The school invites women interested in learning more about the program to attend.

Dayspring created the Women’s Giving Circle to bring together women who are committed to the school - community members, family members and friends - so they may harness the power of collective giving. The members of the Women’s Giving Circle pool their donations and invest in projects they believe will build and strengthen the school.

The 2022 Giving Circle supported new Bibles for lower school classroom use; a drying rack and jewelry supplies for art classes; tents for an overnight field study trip to Gettysburg; a centrifuge machine, fingerprinting kits and digital thermometers for upper school science classes; sensory learning items for the school’s learning support program; books and puppets for first-grade classes; and wireless tour receivers for upper school field studies.

Any woman can join the Giving Circle at Dayspring by making an annual contribution of a set amount and a commitment to participate in the group’s Lunch and Learn, where members see their funds in action; the social membership meeting; and the annual meeting. Each year, the combined contributions of the Women’s Giving Circle membership are used to support specific projects and educational services at Dayspring. The membership votes annually in October on which projects will benefit from the fund.

Light fare and refreshments will be provided at the April meeting. For more information or to reserve a seat at the April 18 meeting, contact Joanne Martin at 717-285-2000 or jmartin@dayspringchristian.com by Thursday, April 13.

Encouraging the next generation of artists

On April 2, Lancaster County Art Association (LCAA), 149 Precision Ave., Strasburg, opened “Elementary & The Middle,” an art exhibit that features work from students

from first to eighth grades. The exhibit includes students from across the county and will remain in the Kauffman Gallery until Sunday, April 23.

LCAA first held the exhibit last year as a way to encourage young artists to engage with the arts. Prior to the opening, this year LCAA contacted schools from around Lancaster County to invite their art classes to participate. Certain classes chose a specific theme for their students to work within, but the exhibit includes artwork from a variety of mediums such as pastels, oil painting and drawing. “Even just being able to work on the creative side of one’s personality helps in other areas like math and problem solving,” said Patricia Keller of Landisville,

Evening with Darryl Strawberry set

First United Methodist Church, 29 E. Walnut St., Lancaster, will host an evening with Darryl Strawberry on Saturday, April 22, at 5 p.m. Described as a baseball legend by many, Strawberry is now an ordained minister who is passionate about spreading a message of hope and helping others transform their lives.

Strawberry’s many accomplishments in baseball include four World Series titles, eight All-Star Game appearances, and a nomination to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2004. Extremely successful in his career, Strawberry’s personal life was plagued with addictions, abuse, divorces, cancer, jail, and other issues. He is the author of numerous books, including “The Imperfect Marriage: Help for Those Who Think It’s Over” with his wife, Tracy Strawberry. In 2011, the Strawberrys

who is a member of LCAA and helps to coordinate its events. “It’s important to have an outlet and use a different part of your brain.” During the opening of the exhibit, prizes were awarded to students in different categories for each grade.

LCAA also opened a themed membership exhibit in its Steinmetz Gallery titled “The Natural World.” The exhibit features 11-by-14-inch paintings from members of the organization, each depicting a different scene found in nature, such as landscapes, bodies of water and wildlife. The exhibit will remain in the gallery until April 23 and may be visited during LCAA’s regular hours of Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m.

This summer, LCAA will also host a variety of art classes and camps for kids. On Saturdays, April 29, May 6 and May 13, the organization will host “Clay Days,” a course that will explore different techniques when working with clay and creating sculptures. On Saturdays, April 15, April 22 and April 29, “Painting Primer” will be held at LCAA to

introduce students to multiple painting mediums.

On Saturdays, June 17 and 24, LCAA will host a sketchbook challenge. For the challenge, students will receive a sketchbook and will be encouraged to fill it with drawings as they hone their skills throughout the summer. At the end of the summer, each sketchbook will be displayed at an exhibit to be judged, and awards will be given out to artists for their work.

From Monday, July 10, to Friday, July 14, a painting camp will be held at LCAA for youths between the ages of 10 and 16. Participants in the camp will utilize mediums such as watercolor paint, acrylic paint and mixed media to create pieces inspired by nature. An art show to display their work will be held on July 14, at 12:30 p.m.

“We want to encourage people to bring their children to creative classes and get them involved with the arts,” Keller said. “The more you get young people involved, the better.”

LCAA also offers art classes for adults throughout the year. For more information, visit www.lcaaonline.org.
