OnApril 17, Red Rose Figure Skating Club began a spring session of classes in partnership with Learn To Skate USA. Classes will be held at Regency Ice Rink, 2155 Ambassador Drive, Lancaster, on Mondays until May 22, and summer sessions will be held in June and July. The club seeks to provide both adults and children age 3 and up with an opportunity to learn the fundamentals of ice skating.

Each session follows a curriculum provided by Learn to Skate USA, which offers a foundation for those looking to pursue figure skating and ice hockey. After working on basic techniques, coaches will help skaters to perfect more advanced skills such as one-foot glides, hops and turns. “At the end of the day, skating is skating. Even if you’re a 6-year-old wanting to become a hockey player, you have to learn to skate first,” said Cara Scudner of the Conestoga Valley area, a competitive skater at Red Rose.

Mastering the ice

Scudner and other seasoned skaters at Red Rose assist with the Learn to Skate program by serving as coaches during the classes. Although the program has been offered by the club in the past, this will be the first session that it has offered in over 10 years. Scudner said that she hopes the group classes offer a more

Fair turns students into entrepreneurs

On March 24, East Petersburg Elementary School held its annual Entrepreneur Fair. During the event, students set up business stands and operated them with the help of their parents. A panel of guest judges interviewed the students at each stand about their products and what the preparation for the fair entailed, and the panel awarded prizes at the end of the event.

A month before the fair, the school held a meeting with the participating

students to address the details of the event and offer guidelines for the competition. Certain students and their families began preparing for the fair by creating items such as keychains and jewelry to ensure that they would have enough inventory to sell. During the meeting, students were visited by 12-year-old Bennett Dufrene of Landisville, who started his own business selling ice cream when he was 9 years old. Dufrene, better known as Mr. Ice Cream Kid, shared his insight on operating a business with the students to help them to prepare for the fair.

accessible alternative to private lessons for aspiring skaters of any age. “It’s never too late to start ice skating,” Scudner said. “There’s nothing like it. Skating combines artistry with athleticism. You feel like you’re flying when you’re gliding on the ice.”

In March, Scudner and fellow Red Rose skaters Brian Padgett of Lancaster and Ken Nguyen of Hershey competed in the Eastern and Midwestern Sectional Championships. At the championship competition in Kissimmee, Fla., Nguyen won first place and Padgett won second place. Both Nguyen and Padgett qualified to compete at the silver level in the national championship in Salt Lake City, Utah. Nguyen started skating as an adult through Learn to Skate USA and has regularly helped with the program and competed for the last 12 years. “Being an adult skater, I had more of a fondness to help other adults starting out and to nurture that enjoyment of the sport,” Nguyen said.

Staying smart about AI

The term artificial intelligence (AI) draws mixed reactions. Thanks to decades of science fiction films, television shows and books, many people hear the term AI and immediately begin to picture a bleak dystopia where robots have taken over the world, accompanied by the worry that Arnold Schwarzenegger won’t be able to save the day. Charlie Reisinger, chief information officer for Penn Manor School District, shared his perspective on the technological phenomenon to clear up some common misconceptions about AI.

“AI is just another chapter in humanity’s quest to create machines that mirror other humans,” Reisinger said. “There are age-old stories of human beings trying to create life, like the tales of Frankenstein’s monster and the Greek myth of Pygmalion. At its core, it’s trying to breathe some sort of life into technology, but AI is really just math and computer code, nothing more.”

The research of AI has been occurring for decades. The fundamental idea was to create software that could emulate human decision making, but many research efforts were not fruitful enough and were See Artificial Intelligence pg 5

Nguyen said that he had been interested in skating for many years and loved to watch it on TV, but never took lessons when he was younger and instead f ocused on his studies. Once he graduated from college, he decided to fulfill his dream of becoming a figure skater. Nguyen noted that one of his favorite aspects of the adult figure skating community is how

supportive it is. “We understand as adult skaters that we don’t move like kids, but it’s an enjoyable sport and you’re never too old to learn,” Nguyen said. “You also build relationships with coaches and other skaters. Even if you see them twice a year, you pick up right where you left off.” For more information, visit www.rrfsc.org/learn -to-skate.

Students were tasked with designing their stands, creating a sign for their businesses and navigating the expenses involved with creating a product. The fair incorporated student-run businesses that sold a variety of items, such as baked goods, lemonade, homemade crafts, artwork, food, flowers, dog treats and lotions. The goal of the event is to give students experience with running a business and tackling the challenges that accompany it. The students also learn about advertising as they promote their businesses at school in the weeks leading up to the fair.

“The fair gives the kids a view into the real world and what it means to be an entrepreneur,” said Michelle Brenneman, who co-chairs the East Petersburg Elementary PTO along with Liz Gee. “They learn about supply and demand and good business practices. It’s a great lessons for them and even their parents.”

The East Petersburg Elementary PTO has been organizing the Entrepreneur Fair since 2008 and saw a record number of participants this year with 50 students running stands. The event also incorporates the community beyond the school, as the fair is open to the members of the public who wish to patronize the businesses. “The kids get so much confidence from participating, and we love to see how excited they get while preparing for the fair. We also get a great response from the community every year and a lot of good feedback,” said Gee.

The panel of guest judges is made up of local business owners and community members. This year, Donna Longenecker, who started the event when she was a member of the East Petersburg Elementary PTO, returned to serve as a judge. Students were judged on their products, business plans and signage. At the end of the fair, cash prizes were given out to winning stands, and each student who participated received a coupon for Son’s Ice Cream.

Hempfield girls’ lax averaging 16 goals per game

The Hempfield girls’ lacrosse team has been racking up goals at an astounding rate. In their four LancasterLebanon League matches, the Black Knights have gone undefeated, scoring a total of 64 goals - yes, an average of 16 per game. The latest victim was Penn Manor on Thursday, April 6.

Thanks largely to a five-goal effort by Isabelle Masengarb, the Knights put away the match fairly early, scoring nine of their goals in the first half on the way to a 14-4 victory at home.

Masengarb also provided an assist on the day. Mia Brennan, who notched a hat trick, had two more assists. Natalie Bole and Whitney Hershey scored four and two goals, respectively.

Minding the net was goalie

Ella Ashton (7 saves).

Hempfield improved to 7-1 overall with an 18-6 drubbing of Kennard-Dale at home on Monday, April 10.

Hershey (7 goals) and Masengarb (6 goals) were virtually unstoppable. Bole put up a hat trick plus two assists. Brennan, who also had two assists, and Aubrie Buckwalter, each scored one goal.

Ashton finished with five saves.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

After a quick start out of the gate, the boys’ volleyball team hit a minor skid, losing to L-L League rivals in consecutive matches - the second of which was at Warwick on Thursday, April 6.

“They have an all-around solid team,” head coach Kenneth Eiser said of Warwick.

“We played a little hesitant throughout the night.”

The Warriors won the match in three close sets - 2521, 25-19 and 25-23.

“The Warwick match wasn’t great, and it wasn’t bad,” Eiser described.

Ethan Earhart notched nine kills for Hempfield in addition to his two blocks. Aiden Beiler finished with 26 assists and Brady Rigard racked up 11 digs. Michael Hester recorded two blocks.

The Knights bounced back following the weekend, posting a 3-0 win (25-11, 25-14 and 2510) at home against McCaskey.

“It was good to see the boys fight for every point for the entire match,” Eiser remarked. “We have had some cases of losing focus here and there, which can lead to some big runs for the other team. We will look to continue that focus.”

Kena Bekere finished with seven kills. Rigard hustled for 20 digs and Cole Jackson distributed 28 assists.

TENNIS

The boys’ tennis team opened the week with a 5-0 victory at Lebanon on Monday, April 10, with all three singles matches going Hempfield’s way in 6-0, 60 straight sets.

In doubles competition, Tristan Coyne and Sam Kenner topped their opponents 62, 6-0 while Ben Curtin and Ryan Malesic won 6-1, 6-0.

Cooper Lehman, Eric Jor-

dan, and Andre Hurst all blanked their respective singles matches. The Knights improved to 7-0 on the year.

In a close battle with Section One rival Manheim Township two days later, the Knights came up just short, losing 4-3.

The Lehman and Jordan pairing proved too good for the Township twosome of Palandjian and Chiong in an 8-2 number one doubles match. Hurst and Keener came through 8-4 at number two doubles.

While Lehman had a solid 61, 6-1 number one singles win and Jordan battled back from a 6-3 defeat to win his second set 7-6, Township’s Zach Taylor

claimed the tiebreaker 10-5 at second singles.

Keener played close sets at number four singles, falling short in 7-5, 6-4 defeats.

TRACK

The Hempfield girls fell to Cedar Crest 110-40 while in the boys’ meet, the L-L League rival pulled out an 84-66 win on Monday, April 10.

“In the girls’ meet, depth was a factor in the results,” said head coach Curt Rogers. “Our team is young, and we don’t have depth in too many of the events.”

In the mid- to long-distance runs, the Hempfield boys were once again led by Joe Fahrney, who won the 3,200meter race, and fellow senior Aidan Hodge, who claimed both the 800-m and 1,600-m events.

“Aidan Hodge is a second away from the school record in the 1,600,” Rogers pointed out. “His 4:12.51 was the second fastest in school history and a personal record.”

In the 800, Hodge posted a personal record 2:02.37.

The 4x400 relay team also included Hodge, Freedman Spencer Ashba, and Carson Lieberman (1st, 3:33.60)

The Knights also won three field events, including the 9foot pole vault effort of junior Evan Slaymaker. Seniors Peter Wenzel and Jordan Thode won two of the throwing events with Wenzel winning in javelin at 143-4. In the discus Thode’s throw measured 126-6.

Ellison Wolfe legged out a first-place finish in the girls’ 3,200 while Mya Thompson dashed off with a win in the 100-m with a personal best 13.3 seconds.

Thompson also had a personal best 27.89 in the 200, finishing third.

Molly Seibert’s third-place time of 5:35.14 was also a personal best. Though not necessarily placing among the top finishers, the squad featured more than two dozen personal records.

“On the girls’ side, the number of personal records is proof that these athletes are improving,” Rogers said.

BOYS’ LACROSSE

Just as the girls’ lacrosse team has been a scoring force in the L-L League, so has the boys’ squad. Hempfield improved to 5-0 (4-0 league) with an 18-9 win at Penn Manor on Thursday, April 6, attaining a 15 goals per game

average in league play.

Toby Marco, Jason Hilton, and Zack Antesberger were the leading goal scorers.

BASEBALL

Hempfield defeated Cedar Crest 15-5 in a Section One baseball game on Monday, April 10, at Cornwall.

Drew Benchich and Aiden Rodenberger each stroked RBI singles to put Hempfield up 20 in the first inning, capitalizing on a two-out walk and a hit batter.

Though the lead was shortlived - the Falcons scored four runs in the home half of the first - Hempfield’s batsmen and base runners produced eight runs in the fourth inning. Highlights included RBI’s by Rodenberger, Benchich, Ryan Jackson, Charles Sheerer and Stephen Katch.

Josh Toole’s RBI double and senior Brogan Reihart’s basesloaded single drove in runs in later innings.

Rodenberger also provided four strong innings in relief, allowing just one run as the Knights improved to 6-1 (3-0 league).

Hempfield was coming off a solid 5-1 victory at Chambersburg in a non-league game on Saturday.

Sophomore Brody Gebhard was the winning pitcher, going five solid innings, allowing four hits.

Sheerer’s bases-loaded walk plated the Knights’ final run of the game. Earlier in the contest, Hempfield took advantage of two walks with Fiore’s hit scoring two base runners who had been given free passes.

abandoned. Around 10 years ago, a branch of AI exploration called neural network research resurfaced through the efforts of companies like Google. These companies realized this particular technique, roughly modeled after the human brain, could be used for pattern matching. Google made strides with functions like language processing, which gave us Google Translate. Reisinger credits this point in time as the beginning of a new generation of AI.

Now, AI can be found in many applications that we utilize on a daily basis, such as Siri, Google Assistant and GPS. Reisinger said that the increased presence of these complex applications is due to a variety of factors, the decreasing cost of computers with higher processing power and the increase in storage capability being chief among them. “In the ’90s, the capa-

bility we have today was thought to be impossible,”

Reisinger said. “It’s the confluence of all of these factors that makes AI a hot topic and allows it to make the strides that it has.”

Reisinger said that he sees a mountain of potential in AI. In his eyes, it’s a tool that can be used to enhance human skill and creativity; the main purpose of AI is to process information that it is given and return a result that is meaningful to the user.

Reisinger also noted that it isn’t a tool that is going away any time soon, so he believes people need to embrace it and help society to use AI in a meaningful way.

This opinion doesn’t mean that Reisinger doesn’t have any concerns about AI technology. He notes that the most worrisome effects of using AI are human bias and ways that it will influence teaching and learning. “As

humans, we have a terrible time reducing bias in our thinking. Human weaknesses can find their way into the code of these tools, and we need to build them in a way that they don’t mirror the worst parts of humanity,” Reisinger said. As chief information officer for Penn Manor School District, Reisinger also seeks to impress upon students and

Lancaster Public Library prepares for move

After years of planning and construction, Lancaster Public Library is entering the final stage of its building project. On Thursday, April 20, the library will officially begin its move to its new location in Ewell Plaza. The library is expected to be closed for four to six weeks as its collections and equipment are moved into and installed in the new facility.

The brand-new, state-of-theart building at 151 N. Queen St. will place Lancaster Public Library in the center of its community. The library will be fully ADA accessible and has been designed to be welcoming, open, and bright. It will be equipped with 21st-century technology and collections with

the goal of bringing a new level of resources to the community.

The library’s presence in Ewell Plaza will include spaces for outdoor reading and community programs. An elevated outdoor terrace overlooking the plaza will provide a signature space for library events.

The current building, located at 125 N. Duke St., is set to serve its last patrons on April 19; the library will be open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. that day. During the move, the library will be closed to the public. This closure will remain in effect until the new building opens in late spring.

SPRINGFEST

Based on the 1954 film starring Howard Keel and Jane Powell, the story takes place on the Oregon frontier in the 1850s. Adam Pontipee goes in search of a wife, and after he brings home local sweetheart Milly, his six younger brothers decide to do likewise. Milly, however, sees that their lack of etiquette and their general attitude toward women will be a hindrance and decides to teach them how to properly treat a lady. Brawls with the suitors, kidnapping, and a snowstorm that strands the group in the mountains for a long winter leaves the brothers feeling like “lonesome polecats,” and their loneliness becomes a motivator for learning to see the error of their ways. The ladies, however, are full of their own surprises and show that they are much tougher and more clever than originally thought.

The Lancaster Academy for the Performing Arts’ production has a cast of nearly 60 students and is directed by Brittany Beitzel. The show will also include a live 15piece pit orchestra made up of mostly local professional musicians.

young at heart are invited to be a part of the library’s historic move by carrying one book per person to the new building while cheered on by Library Lovers stationed along East Marion Street. The parade’s main goal is not to transport the library’s inventory, which will be a done under the guidance of a company that specializes in moving libraries, but instead to provide a fun, symbolic event to kick off the move. Registration is not necessary, and walk-ins are encouraged. For full event details, visit www.Lancaster PublicLibrary.org/events.

If all goes according to plan, the new building will be unveiled to patrons during a series of open houses and a ribbon-cutting ceremony in June. As more information becomes available, it will be posted at www.LancasterPublicLibrary.org.

Lancaster Public Library is one of the oldest public libraries in the country. After more than two and a half centuries, the library continues its efforts to inspire, empower, and strengthen the community by connecting people with information, ideas, and enriching experiences.

Joshua Meyer of East Petersburg graduated from Missouri State University, Springfield, Mo., in the fall

of 2022.

Not unlike art, crafts imitate life. But perhaps the most endearing thing about crafts is that they can be both functional and decorative.

All the subtle nuances of the concepts of craft will be on display on Saturday, April 29, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. when Albright LIFE Lancaster, 417 W. Frederick St., Lancaster, hosts its inaugural Spring Craft Fair indoors. The free fair will feature food, fun, and, of course, a wide variety of crafts.

Organizers of the event are hoping that the way the Spring Craft Fair is presented will create a festive and community-based atmosphere.

“We were looking at ways to have a fundraiser,” said Annette Kroeck, Albright LIFE’s community outreach coordinator. “We thought starting small would be a great way to go, and we thought a craft fair would be a good idea, especially with how crafty Lancaster County is.”

Expected to be on hand are a total of 16 crafters and vendors, who will be showing off their wares. There will be quilts, folded art, clay art,

screen-printed T-shirts, jewelry, designer cookies, artistic candles and much more. The event will also include giveaway drawings.

“By holding it indoors, we can show off the building and what we have to offer,” said Kroeck. “The more people who see the inside of the building, the better. We want to get the word out about Albright LIFE (Lancaster). It’s also a way for our participants who are crafty to show off their work.”

The Spring Craft Fair is the first community activity that Albright LIFE (Lancaster) has hosted in more than five years. Events were not held largely due to the pandemic Kroeck said, and providing public re-access to the facility has been “a slow process.”

But she also said that if the inaugural Spring Craft Fair is a success, Albright LIFE Lancaster would consider staging a similar event in the future.

All proceeds from the event will be donated to the Asbury Foundation, the parent company of Albright LIFE Lancaster. Kroeck said she has modest expectations for the amount of funds that the

Author releases third children’s book

Local author Kim Kluxen Meredith has announced that her third children’s picture book, “Heidi Saves the Day,” was released on April 1.

“Heidi Saves the Day” is the third in a series, which began with “Henri’s Home” in 2020 and continued with “Henri to the Rescue” in 2021. The books tell stories of various beach adventures of a hermit crab family with their friends of the sea, and the illustra-

tions are all original watercolors by Lancaster artist Lisa Madenspacher. The hardback books are printed by Yurchak Printing in Landisville.

In addition to being sold at three local Lancaster/Lititz locations, Meredith’s books are carried by two Delaware beach locations and seven New Jersey shore locations, and “Heidi Saves the Day” is also available at a store in Naples, Fla. Additionally,
