Car show slated in East Petersburg
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
OnSaturday, May 6, the 14th annual Vagabonds Car Show will return to the East Petersburg Community Park, 6051 Pine St., East Petersburg. The free event will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and a rain date has been set for Sunday, May 7. The car show will also include a variety of food trucks and vendors. Members of the Vagabonds Rod & Custom Club will sell hot dogs, East Petersburg Borough will offer breakfast sandwiches, and ice cream will be available to purchase from Scoops Ice Cream and Grille. Trophies and door prizes, consisting of gift cards and donations from vendors, will be awarded throughout the day. At 10 a.m., a cornhole tournament will be held; event attendees will be able to register for a set cost per person, and the winner of the tournament will be awarded a cash prize.
During the show, Flamin’ Dick and the Hot Rods will perform classic rock music from the ’50s and ’60s. “People always love coming to see the cars, listening to the music and getting a bite to eat,” said Vance Spicer, vice president of the Vagabonds.
In addition to a spectacle of hundreds of cars, the event will incorporate a Chinese auction and a yard sale. A selection of items such as dishware, children’s toys and household goods will be available to purchase. The items that will be available have been donated by members of the Vagabonds and those in the local community, and the proceeds will benefit Hospice & Community Care in Lancaster. “We’ve been supporting Hospice & Community Care for over 20 years,” Spicer said. “We
chose to support them because it’s a local organization and that money benefits Lancaster.”
The car show is part of a series of community events offered by the borough in partnership with Vagabonds. Although this is the 14th year that the club and borough have organized the event together, members of the Vagabonds Rod & Custom Club have been hosting an annual car show for decades. The club was officially founded in 1958 and is based out of Landisville,
Trucking on to grant wishes
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Think of the Make-A-Wish Mother’s Day Truck Convoy, and you might think of a long line of trucks traveling down the roads of Lancaster County. That is certainly central to the event, said Terry Finch, event chairperson, but that is just part of a special day.
“Our event is anchored by the Convoy trucks and our extremely generous truck drivers, but it is so much more,” Finch shared about the event that kicks off at the Manheim Pennsylvania Auto Auction.
“It’s a community celebration of our See Tr uck Convoy pg 2
although its members hail from across the county. To obtain membership, one must have a vehicle that has been customized either through a unique paint job or body modification.
Vagabonds Rod & Custom Club members meet every other month to take group drives in their cars, with the group usually comprising several dozen vehicles. The group often selects a location ahead of time to drive to and stop for lunch, sometimes traveling as far as
Maryland. The majority of Vagabonds Rod & Custom Club members drive customized hot rods that predate the ’80s, although there is no criteria for cars to be entered in the car show. “People come with original stock Fords, new Corvettes and Japanese cars,” Spicer added. “Anyone can come, and everyone is welcome.”
There is a set cost to enter a vehicle in the show. For more information, search for “Vagabonds Spring Kick-Off Car Show” on Facebook.
Hempfield High School Dance Theatre to present

Hempfield High School, 200 Stanley Ave., Landisville, will host its 2023 Dance Theatre performances on Friday, April 28, and Saturday, April 29, at 7 p.m. An additional matinee show will be held on Sunday, April 30, at 2:30 p.m. Tickets will be available to purchase at the box office, which will open one hour before each performance, and are currently available online at www.hempfieldsd.org/tickets. On Thursday, April 27, at 7 p.m. a free preview of the show will be offered to all senior citizens who

are residents of Hempfield School District.
Every year, Hempfield High School’s Dance Theatre selects a theme for its performance as a way to tell a story through the art of dance. The theme of this year’s show, “Timewarp,” revolves around the general concept of time, from the ordinary ways that everyone experiences the passage of time to the greater concept of impermanence. “We wanted to explore the concept of savoring every moment and focusing on the time that you have, as well as what you leave behind when your time is done,” said Devon Groff, the show’s director. This year’s Make-A-Wish Mother’s Day Truck Convoy will take place on Sunday, May 14, at the Auto Auction, 1190 Lancaster Road, Man-
heim. Beginning at 9 a.m., a Family Carnival will feature food trucks, carnival games, music, mascots and Make-AWish merchandise sales. Across Auction Road from the main building and truck lot, there will be a chicken dinner available for drive-through pickup, Finch noted. “There is
also an online auction running the entire week before the Convoy and ending at midnight the next day, featuring Wish Kid art, jewelry, golf foursomes, gift cards and much more,” she shared.

We encourage civic and fraternal groups, schools, churches, scouts, and other local organizations to submit news releases of general interest to the majority of our readership. Primary consideration is given to dated articles of an informative nature–activities and events of local interest sponsored, presented, or planned by area organizations and institutions. Related photographs of good quality are encouraged also, but complete picture identification must be included. Undated articles of general interest are used as space permits. All articles must contain a contact name and telephone number.
The Make-A-Wish event brings independent drivers and trucking companies from all over the Susquehanna Valley as well as from across the country to participate in the festivities that raise funds needed to grant 75% of the annual wishes in the Susquehanna Valley. Make-AWish Philadelphia, Delaware & Susquehanna Valley grants wishes for children with critical illnesses. Over the years, the Convoy has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars. “In recent years, our record fundraising was just over $600,000,” Finch noted. “Our goal for this year is $700,000.” She said organizers are hoping for 400 trucks to participate in the Convoy this year.
“Our drivers fundraise all year long,” she explained, “and the top fundraisers in dollars earned make up the top 30 drivers in the Convoy. They are the front row of trucks and will lead out the event as they travel along the Convoy route.” The top driver will pull the Wish Angel trailer, which is a tribute to Wish Children in the chapter area who have passed away in the 34 years since the Convoy began. “Each year, we add names to stars on the trailer
When the Convoy heads out, Wish Children are invited to ride along with the drivers, said Finch, noting that up to 100 of them have joined drivers in the past.
The route will run from Manheim to Elizabethtown and Mount Joy, and Finch encourages people to watch the Convoy along the route and cheer on the Wish Children. She recommends viewing the Convoy at LCBC on Route 772 in Manheim, where there will be food trucks and special visitors, and anywhere along Main Street in Mount Joy. Cruising with confidence
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
What are the benefits of riding a bike? How about a healthy dose of confidence, goal setting and personal growth? That’s the mission of Lifecycles, a nonprofit Christ-centered mentoring program committed to building young people of character through bicycling.
The organization kicked off its ninth season on April 24. A girls’ team meets on Monday evenings at Warwick Township Municipal Park, 315 Clay Road, Lititz. Boys’ teams meet on Tuesdays at Riverfront Park, 551 Vinegar Ferry Road, Marietta; on Wednesdays at Warwick Township Municipal Park; and on Thursdays at Amos Herr Park, 1700 Nissley Road, Landisville. Groups ride from 6 to 8 p.m.
“This is a positive and encouraging environment to learn how to set your goals and grow with other teenagers,” said Lee DeRemer, who founded the organization with his wife, Marcie. “There’s no bullying, and everybody works together. Everyone is in a group for their skill level. We are open for boys or girls between the ages of 12 and 18, and everything we provide is 100% free - the bikes, the meals, the equip-
ment, helmets, everything.”
Along with meeting once a week for their season, which runs through August, Lifecycles teens also participate in special challenge rides. Five teams will be riding during the last week in July and the first week in August, Lee said. One team will travel from Pittsburgh to Washington, D.C. Two boys’ teams and one girls’ team will each ride a loop around Lake Champlain on the border of New York and Vermont, covering 380 miles in seven days. “Our 15 most advanced riders will be riding from Portland, Maine, 530 miles all the way to Valley Forge, Pa.,” Lee noted.
In addition to the challenge rides and the weeknight rides, teens are also invited to participate in Saturday rides throughout Lancaster County. “These are opportunities to try something new and be out all day or almost all day long,” Lee said.
“They are opportunities for mentoring and more confidence building.”
He emphasized that although this season has already begun, teens can join Lifecycles at any time. “We have a lot of kids who are involved in spring sports, and we tell them, ‘Hey, just wait until school is over and come on out that first week in June and start right up with us,’” he

shared. “They haven’t missed anything by missing the first few weeks.”
Lee said the success of Lifecycles has relied heavily on volunteers, and the organization is always looking for more people to help.
“After nine years of doing this, it’s
really wonderful to be part of the community where there’s so many people pitching in and so many different ways to help one another,” he remarked. “We are really thrilled to be a part of that.”

Knights hold off Cocalico 4-1 in tennis
BY ARA GRIGORIAN
The Hempfield boys’ tennis team hit a three-match skid following a 4-1 victory over Cocalico on Thursday, April 13. In that non-league match, Ryan Malesic and Will Keppel won a close match at number two doubles, teaming up for a 6-4, 6-4 victory.
“Ryan Malesic has been able to step in for his first year on varsity and play some doubles for us,” Knights coach Mindi Bell explained. “We lost a lot of people from last year. He and Tristan Coyne put in a lot of work in the offseason. They’ve been able to come up big in some tough matches for us.”
The Black Knights swept the singles matches with Cooper Lehman taking the number one singles (6-2, 6-1) and Sam Keener taking the third singles even more easily 6-0, 6-0.
Sandwiched in between was the battle between Eric Jordan and the Eagles’ Nick Neustadter. Jordan won the marathon match 7-6 7-4.
“Eric Jordan has had some really good matches,” Bell said. “He will fight for every
point. Eric is always focused and has the desire to win.”
Hempfield improved to a commanding 8-1 record with the win. The following day, however, a tough Lancaster Country Day team topped the Knights 4-0 at Hempfield. The Cougars team is one that many experts, including Bell, give a great deal of credit.
“They are very good,” she said. “They should win the state [championship] for Class Double-A”
Malesic and Coyne fought hard in their first set of number two doubles, finally yielding 6-3. The Cougars won the second set 6-1.
Lehman and Jordan teamed up for a 9-7 victory at number one doubles at Cedar Crest on Monday, April 17. That would be the only team point for the Knights in a 6-1 LancasterLebanon League loss.
Keener came close in the first set of the number four singles, which Crest’s Charles Robbins finally won 6-4.
Also hindering Hempfield’s success was the injury to their number one player, Lehman.
“He played doubles in the Cedar Crest match,” Bell said.
“He sprained his ankle, and he needs to rest it.”
“Cedar Crest played a better match,” Bell added.
The Knights fell to 3-3 in the L-L League following their close 4-3 defeat at the hands of McCaskey on Wednesday. The Red Tornado improved to 10-3.
“McCaskey was solid,” Bell said. “They’ve been doing really well.”
Because of the injury to Lehman, Jordan was moved to number one singles, coming back to win in three sets (6-1, 3-6, 10-7).
Jordan and Lehman won the first doubles 8-0 while Keener and Curtin triumphed 8-5 at number two.
In third doubles, Malesic and Coyne came close to tipping the scales in Hempfield’s favor yet came up short 8-6.
Asked about what the three consecutive losses have done to the Knights’ post-season chances, Bell replied, “We will not be able to get into districts this year.
“Last year we finished ninth and just missed it,” continued the coach, referring to the power rankings. “We finished ninth and they only take eight.”
TRACK
Hempfield hosted the 19th annual Black Knight Invitational on Saturday, April 15
“We hosted 25 teams,” Hempfield coach Curt Rogers said. “We had an hour and a half lightning delay and eventually the meet was canceled.”
Prior to said cancellation, some noteworthy efforts included Molly Seibert’s personal best 5:33.69 time in the 1600-meter run. The time also was an L-L League qualifier. Roz Scott also had a personal best (5:48.06) in the same event.
Evi Sahd had a personal best 63.94 in the 400-m dash while in the long jump Sophia Hamby came through with her best ever 15-4.25 jump.
In the 1600 boys Sam Freedman (4:25.57) and Joe Fahrney (4:28.23) finished second and sixth, respectively, both achieving personal records and L-L qualifying times. David Becker finished the 110 hurdles in 20.47 seconds.
In the triple jump, Braydon Felsinger finished seventh (40-4) and Jordan Thode’s discus toss traveled 123-9.
BASEBALL
For Stephen Katch, his first start as a pitcher proved to be a memorable one. The senior struck out 13 and only allowed one hit in a 10-0 dominance of Cedar Crest on Monday, April 17, in Landisville.
He only needed to throw five innings in the mercy-rule shortened game.
The Knights scored twice in the first inning - a fielder’s choice RBI and Aiden Rodenberger’s RBI single.
Josh Toole’s single scored another run in the second inning. Charles Sheerer kept the rally going with a sacrifice fly RBI.
The Knights rebounded nicely to win that game after Penn Manor had won in dramatic fashion three days earlier, 7-6. The Comets scored three times in the bottom of the seventh.
Hempfield scored four times in the first inning, highlighted by consecutive RBI singles off the bats of Logan Harelson and Brayden Hostetter.
Rodenberger’s RBI single in the fifth inning gave Hempfield a two-run lead - one which wasn’t enough.
GIRLS’ LACROSSE
Coming off a match in which they had poured in 23 goals, the Hempfield girls defeated Cedar Crest 15-3 in a home game on Friday, April 14. The win improved the Black Knights’ record to 8-2 (5-1 league).
Along with hat tricks by Isabelle Masengarb and Lucy DeHoff, Hempfield’s Whitney Hershey scored four goals and gave out one assist. Natalie Bole Hattie Mack, and Aubrie Buckwalter each scored one.
Goalie Alla Ashton made three saves.
Ashton and Isabella LaVenice each had three saves in the 21-2 drubbing of the Buckskins on Tuesday.
Bole scored six goals on the night. Hershey added four goals while Ava Corvino, Masengarb and Brennan each tallied two.
Also chipping in with one goal each were Mack, Buckwalter, DeHoff and Haley Knouse.
BOYS’ LACROSSE
L-L League opponents Cedar Crest and Conestoga Valley did not have an answer to the offensive juggernaut that was Hempfield’s boys’ lacrosse team. On Friday, April 14, the Knights downed the Falcons 20-4. In a Tuesday night match at CV, the Knights dominated 15-3. Carsten Rankin, Toby Marco, and Drew Bennett each notched a hat trick in the 20goal performance. Marco also had three assists as did Phil Krauser, who netted one goal. Also contributing to the scoring were Zack Antesberger (2g, 2a), Seamus Mack (2a) plus Logan Klinger and Dylan Ahlskog, who scored two each. Antesberger, Marco and Jason Hilton had the hat tricks in the CV match as the Knights improved to 7-1 (6-1 league). Krauser was the only other multiple goal scorer with two. Rankin, Bennett, and Stephen Pitts each tallied one goal.
VOLLEYBALL
The Knights just couldn’t string together enough aces, or enough kills to overtake the Falcons in a Section One match at Cedar Crest on Thursday, April 13. The Falcons won by scores of 25-16, 25-18 and 25-16 to sweep the Knights.
Hempfield’s Ehan Earhart and Aiden Beiler each registered seven kills and two blocks. Brady Rigard served two aces and collected 15 digs. Cole Jackson led the team in assists with 13.

Community Celebration for Glatfelter Memorial Field
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Community has always been at the heart of Glatfelter Memorial Field, located at 1249 Lancaster Ave., Columbia. Now you are invited to take part in a Community Celebration at the field on Saturday, May 6, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
“We wanted to give families something to do and give kids a little bit of old-fashioned fun,” said Robin Gamby, secretary of the Gladfelter Memorial Field Trust board and fundraising chair. “If you are looking to come out and have some oldfashioned fun, please join us. We want to bring the community together.”
The festivities will include food trucks Cafe 301 and Kurtz’s Concessions. Gift card bingo will be played in the large pavilion starting at noon. A variety of games and activities will be available for children as well. “We are going to have a dunk tank,
which is something I know the kids love every year when they have it at National Night Out,” Gamby noted.
The event is a fundraiser for the field, which is a private facility and does not receive any municipal or state funding. Expenses at the field include completing the funding of the brick entrance restoration, which is approximately 95% funded, and covering the costs of continuous maintenance and improvements of the facility. The park includes a large pavilion, a small pavilion, basketball courts, football and baseball fields and a track. It is used by a variety of groups throughout the year, including CBAA baseball and softball teams, the Columbia High School girls’ softball team, Dayspring Christian Academy’s track team and the PA Gremlins traveling football team. Additionally, community members have reserved the facility for events such as a community
Easter egg hunt, birthday parties, reunions, the National Night Out event and the Boy Scout can drive.
Gamby stated that the community celebration is the first in a series of planned fundraisers for the field. At least two more bingos will be scheduled for this summer or fall. On Friday, Sept. 29, the inaugural Glatfelter Memorial Field golf outing will be held at Cool Creek Golf Club, with an 8 a.m. tee time.
She noted that Glatfelter Field has been the site of many memories for residents
of Columbia and the surrounding area. “This is definitely a community site,” she explained, adding that the field is a spot full of nostalgia. “A lot of people grew up at this place. They played baseball when they were little, or they participated in other sports here. This event is a way for people to give back while also having fun.”
For more information about Glatfelter Memorial Field, to reserve the facility or for information about the golf outing, contact Glatfelter MemorialField@gmail.com.

Visitors are asked to pull into the driveway at the side of the house and park in the back due to heavy traffic on the road. A sign will be posted at the location. All plants to be sold at the sale have been raised by club members, and proceeds will help to fund the club’s civic projects.

Local author sets book launch
East Hempfield Township resident Jeanne Moran recently announced the launch of her fourth book for young readers, a whimsical middle grade fantasy titled “Someone for Sasquatch.” Ideal for readers ages 8 to 12, the story involves a magic-filled contest in which two fairies, one creative and the other a stubborn traditionalist, compete to find a human companion for the loneliest creature on earth, Sasquatch.
Moran’s previous works, a picture book and two young adult historical novels, have won numerous awards and praise from readers around the world. Her shorter works have appeared in national magazines for children, parents and
people of faith, as well in as the “Chicken Soup for the Soul” series.
She has shared her research, writing and publication journeys at local libraries, schools and Rotary Clubs. She is an active member of Pennwriters and the Society for Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators, and is a volunteer advocate with CASA of Lancaster and Lebanon Counties.
Moran will be present at three upcoming events: an event on Friday, April 28, at Flinchbaugh’s Orchard Spring Market, 110 Ducktown Road, Hellam; the Gaithersburg Book Festival on Saturday, May 20, at 506 S. Frederick Ave., Gaithersburg, Md.; and the Middletown Area Historical Society’s Arts
and Crafts Show on Saturday, June 10, at 29 E. Main St., Middletown.
“Someone for Sasquatch” is available in e-book form and in print.

Organization plans bingo event, seeks assistance
Big Hug Inc. will host its inaugural Pocketbook Bingo fundraiser at Saint Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, 521 E. Orange St., Lancaster, on Saturday, April 29, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Doors will open at 10 a.m. The event will include 10 games of bingo, two special games and giveaway drawings. Food and beverages will be available for purchase.

The proceeds from this event will go to feeding people throughout central Pennsylvania over the coming months.
Big Hug Inc. is a 501(c)(3) organization that works to feed those who are homeless and hungry throughout Lan-
caster, York, Berks, Lebanon and Dauphin counties. The organization was started in late 2021 by Linda Than.
W hen Than was a little girl in Vietnam, she and her family would gather around the dinner table to share meals and stories of their day.
Than came to the United States just over three decades ago, initially living in Washington, D.C., for a few months before moving with her family to Lancaster. During her time in the nation’s capital, Than saw many people who were homeless, and she felt a need to help. Big Hug Inc. is based on Than’s joy for cooking and caring for others, interests that came from her late mother.
Since Big Hug’s founding, Than has organized a five-person board of directors, which includes the Rev. Louis Butcher, former pastor of Bright Side Baptist Church. The board meets monthly and
supports Than in her efforts to feed those in need.
Big Hug is seeking assistance from local churches and community organizations that have commercial kitchens and gathering space where Big Hug volunteers may prepare and serve meals on weekend days. Currently, two or three facilities per county are needed for this purpose. Thus far, Holy Trinity Catholic Church in
Homefields posts Open Farm event
Homefields will host an Open Farm event at its Care Farm, 150 Letort Road, Millersville, on Saturday, April 29, between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. This drop-in event is free and will offer community members an opportunity to learn about the 2023 community-supported agriculture (CSA) program hosted by the farm. Attendees may visit the greenhouses and the bee habitats and insect hotels; check out the farm’s tractors; make a DIY planter; and take home a plant. Farmer-guided tours will be offered at 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 and 1:30 p.m. The event will also include food samples and a selfie station.
Dance Theatre
In the first act, the show will incorporate the concept of time travel as the performers visit different time periods. By transforming the stage into a time machine, Groff said, the cast will take the audience to the past to visit cavemen as well as the distant future.

of the week. The cast this year comprises over 90 students, a third of whom are freshmen. “I’m excited people want to get involved,” Groff said. “The fact we almost doubled our number of cast members this year is encouraging.”
At the farm’s information station, attendees may learn about volunteer opportunities as well as the CSA program. Those who grab a coupon and sign up by Sunday, April 30, will receive a free week of vegetables.
Guests are also invited to bring a picnic to the event. Homefields will provide meadow tea and water; attendees are asked to bring their own water bottles, as Homefields is seeking to reduce single-use plastics on the farm.
Free, off-street parking is available at the farm. To learn more, visit www.home fields.org/farm Homefields is a 501(c)(3) organization.
Lancaster County teacher wins award

Columbia has invited Big Hug to provide its services one Sunday in June and another in August. Volunteers and financial contributions are sought, as well.
Big Hug has set a goal to feed more than 2,500 people before the end of 2024. Than also hopes to one day have a food truck that will allow her to take her mission into the streets, directly to people in need.
In the show’s second act, it will explore a day in the life of two average people and the ordinary role that time plays in it. To conclude the second act, the show will emphasize the importance of the limited amount of time everyone has in their lives. “What’s important is all of the lives you’ve touched and the relationships you’ve made,” Groff added.
Hempfield High School’s Dance Theatre began its preparation for the show with auditions in January, just after students returned from the holiday break. Rehearsals began immediately, with some members of the cast staying after school for multiple hours each day
Last year, the show’s theme focused on rain as a way to convey the concept of rebirth and starting anew. Due to restrictions after the COVID-19 pandemic, the school previously had to combine its musical and Dance Theatre performances, making last year the first show that the program was able to return to normal.
“Dance Theatre is such a special thing in the Hempfield community. Many of our dancers have never taken lessons, but they can all feel the music and translate it into something special,” Groff said. “It’s something for both students and the audience to be a part of something special and experience the world of dance.”

Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development held its 39th annual gala - its major fundraising event of the 2023 calendar year - with a theme of “Bourbon + Bowties” on March 11 at Brick Gables in Lititz. In addition to raising funds for the center, the event introduced the center’s 2023 Ambassador children.
Each of these children has benefited from Schreiber’s therapy, recreation and/or educational programming.
The Ambassadors and their families have agreed to share their stories and represent Schreiber at engagements throughout the year.
This year’s Ambassadors are Graeme from Lancaster, Malcolm from Lancaster, Lucas from Grantville, Kalvin from Elizabethtown, Katelyn from Elizabethtown, and Harper from Elizabethtown.
Graeme, 6, was diagnosed with autism at age 2 and needed to work on his fine and gross motor skills as well as speech and language. Graeme has graduated from the physical, speechlanguage and behavioral health therapy programs, and he continues to receive occupational therapy with Makenzie Skiles. Because of Schreiber, Graeme has learned to interact with his family, which includes older brother, Connor, and his peers. He identifies emotions in him-
self and recognizes and is able to empathize with emotions in others. He can write the alphabet and his name, and he is excelling in school.
Malcolm, 23, is an artist. His artworks have been featured in many shows and received numerous awards. Malcolm, who has autism, graduated from Schreiber therapy services several years ago. During his time at Schreiber, Malcolm received occupational therapy from Emily Beddow, who taught him many
life skills, and Lisa Christoffel, who retired in June 2021 after over 40 years of service to Schreiber. Malcolm, who has an older sister, Kiana, currently participates in Schreiber’s Club 625 events, especially the dances. Club 625 is a social group for teenagers and alumni of Schreiber.
Lucas, 4, has spinal muscular atrophy, a rare genetic disorder that affects motor neurons in the brain and spinal

cord. To help improve his posture, prevent joint stiffness and slow muscle weakness and atrophy, Lucas receives regular services at Schreiber. He recently stood on his own for the first time. Lucas also receives occupational therapy from Bianca Angstadt. As a result of occupational therapy, Lucas has been able to put on a T-shirt. He has also been working to grasp crayons and markers. Lucas also practiced improving his tactile sensory processing by getting his hands messy with shaving cream, paint, and glue. Lucas, who has 3 older siblingsNicole, Ryan and Chloe - currently attends Schreiber’s preschool program.
Kalvin, 13, has been a Schreiber client since the age of 2, when he was diagnosed with autism. He has received all four therapy services - physical, occupational, speech-language and behavioral health. Having recently graduated from speech-language therapy with Jeremy Ewell, he can form clear and specific sounds in speech.
In behavioral therapy with Missy Ressler, he is concentrating on managing his anxiety. Along with his younger sister, Katelyn, Kalvin wore the Duckie costume at the Rubber Duckie Race in 2022.
Katelyn, 10, has autism. Her brother, Kalvin, was already receiving services at Schreiber, so when her parents thought she needed services, they had her evaluated. While in preschool, Katelyn was found to have selective mutism; she whispered to her teacher, as she did not want others to hear her.
For this, Katelyn has worked with several speech-language therapists, including Barb Miller, Karen Thomsen and Maddy Sova. She has also worked with occupational therapist Bernie Hershey. Currently, Katelyn receives speech-language therapy, working with Ashley Shirk. She also works with behavioral health therapist
Katelyn (left) and Kalvin Harper
Missy Ressler on social skills in connection with her anxiety.
After college, Harper’s mom, Kirsten, worked for the Circle of Friends Academy at the Schreiber Center. When Harper was 6 months old and needed
Early Intervention services, Kirsten called the Schreiber Center. Kirsten began working with therapy director Angie Rice, an occupational therapist, to help Harper overcome extreme oral aversion. At age 2, Harper began working with Becca Lopez for speech therapy. She is currently working on forming longer sentences, using three-syllable words and improving her overall intelligibility. Harper, now 3, also attends Schreiber’s S.T.A.R.S. Preschool program, which places kids with special needs alongside those who are typically developing in the educational space.

Horizons is a public-private partnership between Lancaster Country Day School and the School District of Lancaster. Each summer, a new cohort of 15 kindergarten students from George Washington Elementary and Elizabeth Martin Elementary schools are recruited, and those same students come back summer after summer through eighth grade. Many students have fallen behind in reading and math as a result of the pandemic, and these challenges are multiplied for students from communities experiencing educational inequity. Horizons exists to accelerate learning recovery. Students gain an average of six to 10 weeks in reading and math over the course of a summer.
Meashey joined Horizons at LCDS in the summer of 2016 with its kindergarten cohort. Since then, she has spent every summer learning and building relationships with the same cohort, which is now in seventh grade. Meashey is also a mentor to newer Horizons teachers, helping with lesson planning, ideas and classroom management. At Lancaster Country Day School, she continually advocates for the program, which incldues recruiting new teachers and helping to find resources and spaces each summer.
