East Petersburg gears up for summer events
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDNow that spring has arrived and the cold weather has subsided until next winter, the community is gearing up for its annual roster of activities at East Petersburg Community Park, 6051 Pine St., East Petersburg.
The first item on the schedule is the 15th annual Vagabonds Car Show, which will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 4. A rain date has been set for Sunday, May 5. The free community event will highlight several classic automobiles, and it will include various vendors, food trucks and live entertainment provided by Flamin’ Dick and the Hot Rods. Awards will be given out to community-favorite vehicles, and door prizes will be offered throughout the day. Hot dogs will be available to purchase from members of the Vagabonds Rod & Custom club.
Every year, the Vagabonds Car
Show features a Chinese auction, and all proceeds from the auction will benefit Hospice & Community Care in Lancaster. This year, the event will introduce a station under the park pavilion where attendees may create their own trucker hats.
The car show is organized via a partnership between the Vagabonds and the East Petersburg Events Committee, and it is one of the first annual events held at East Petersburg Community Park each year. Although members of the Vagabonds have hosted an annual show since the club was founded in Landisville in 1958, the event has grown substantially since moving to East Petersburg. “The car show became a great opportunity for the events committee to show people our park, and it draws in a lot of people every year,” said Events Committee chairperson Kristin Troop. “We started to add other music events, and things really took off after we
Hempfield students succeed at business
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDIn March, four teams of Hempfield High School (HHS) students participated in Bloomsburg University’s annual Husky Dog Pound. Three of the teams earned a place in the “Shark Tank”-inspired competition’s top 15 out of more than 100 contestants. The group of students won a combined total of nearly $1,000, and the winning teams included Ryan Malesic, Reece Wilfong, Eddy Gibore, Justin Loretz, Reece Calabretta,
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDJJ Roach of Lancaster doesn’t see the world in the same way most people do. The 20-year-old artist has a keen eye for complex patterns and intricate details, which he often quickly spots in what appear to be ordinary settings. In 2020, JJ began leaning into his unique instincts to create elaborate, large-scale drawings that spare no detail. Over the last four years, JJ has continued to hone his craft by expanding his portfolio and participating in art
shows and events in Lancaster County and beyond, including the Philadelphia Eagles Art Gala Charity Auction held in March.
“Green Is the Heart Inspired” was held from March 25 to April 15 at Arch Enemy Arts, a gallery located in Philadelphia’s historic Old City. The art gala and auction, which benefited the Eagles Autism Foundation, featured 35 pieces created by artists from the greater Philadelphia area. JJ was among three of the featured artists who have been diagnosed with autism.

The Vagabonds’ car show will be followed by the Events Committee’s annual yard sale and barbecue, which will take place at the park on Saturday, June 1. The yard sale will be held from 8 a.m. to noon, and it will feature dozens of vendors from the local community and the surrounding areas. The barbecue will kick off at 11 a.m., giving attendees an opportunity to purchase a meal that will include a half-chicken, coleslaw, baked beans, a dinner roll, a bag of chips, a beverage and a dessert. The Events Committee’s food coordinator, Erin Matthews, said the group hopes to develop the event into a larger-scale community gathering by adding live music in the future.
On Friday, June 28, the Events Committee will host a Movie in the Park event that will include live music from Kracker Beez in addition to a fireworks display.
Perennial plant sale posted
East Petersburg Woman’s Club will host a perennial plant sale from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, May 7. The sale will be held at 1619 Graystone Road, Manheim, and will offer a variety of perennial plants.

JJ’s mother, Carol, first learned about the Eagles Autism Foundation in February from her other son, John. After doing some research and making a few phone calls, Carol received a response from the foundation, which invited JJ to participate in the upcoming gala by submitting a green piece of artwork. JJ had been working on a large drawing that he hadn’t colored in yet, and he decided to apply the Eagles’ green and white color scheme to have it included. Despite the short timeframe, which necessitated several late-night drawing sessions, JJ finished his piece “Eye of the Eagle” in time for the gala.
“It was fun and crazy all at once,” JJ said of the exhibit’s opening night, which he attended with Carol. “I’ve been to art galas and fundraisers before, but never ones with NFL stars or anything.” The opening night at Arch Enemy Arts was attended by art collectors, supporters of the Eagles Autism Foundation and famous play ers from the Philadelphia football team. “It was beautiful, green chaos,” Carol added.
After a few bids, JJ’s piece sold for nearly $1,000. Sporting a glittering green suit and tie, JJ met other artists featured in the exhibit and a few of the Eagles players, as well as the team’s mascot, Swoop.
it difficult for him to concentrate in class. When he was 16 years old, JJ started working on a drawing to thank his teachers for their patience and guidance. After showing the finished piece to a friend, JJ realized he had inadvertently drawn the Fibonacci sequence, a mathematical sequence that frequently appears in nature and is associated with the golden ratio. “I mostly still rely on my instincts, mind and deeper thoughts when I’m drawing,” JJ said.
“(JJ) thinks in shapes and patterns,” Carol said. “I started to realize that’s the way his brain works.” JJ said he hopes to share his story with other people who may have autism or ADHD to let them know that anyone can excel - even if they think differently from others.

Each team of young entrepreneurs developed its business plan during Chris Hanusa’s Entrepreneurship 2 course at HHS. Students in Hanusa’s class received $100 to create a marketable product or service, such as Malesic and Wilfong’s invention AnyCase. AnyCase is a protective phone case that includes a locking mechanism on its back. Similarly to other phone case accessories, AnyCase allows users to mount a phone to hard surfaces or attach a wallet to the rear of the device. The locking mechanism allows for a more secure connection than magnets or adhesives.
Malesic and Wilfong, who are seniors at HHS, participated in the Husky Dog Pound last year with a cardboard prototype. After 3D printing a plastic model of the product, Malesic and Wilfong achieved third place at this year’s competition. “The judges liked our presentation. They really wanted us to patent (AnyCase); they liked that it was different from similar products due to how secure it is and the different capabilities it has,” Malesic said.
In addition to the Husky Dog Pound, Malesic and Wilfong participated in the Pennsylvania
Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) state competition in Hershey from April 8 to 10. Malesic earned seventh place at the 2023 conference, and he teamed up with Wilfong to achieve first place this year. The resourceful duo was presented with a scenario where they needed to improve a small business’s marketing strategy, a challenge that Malesic and Wilfong tackled by using online strategies such as e-commerce.
Malesic and Wilfong both credit Hanusa’s class with giving them the tools to succeed at the conference and the Husky Dog Pound competition. “Mr. Hanusa is a great teacher, and it’s super awesome to have the opportunities that we’ve had,” Malesic said. “There aren’t many schools that give you a hundred bucks to start a business.”
“What I enjoyed most about Mr. Hanusa’s class was the assignments and projects that allowed me to think outside the box and be creative,” added Wilfong. “This year, I knew exactly what I needed to do to succeed, and that added a lot more confidence to my test-taking and our presentation.”
After graduating from high school, Malesic plans to attend Penn State University to study finance, and Wilfong hopes to purse a business education at the University of Pittsburgh.
