Knights Improve to 6-1 With Win Over Township

BY ARA GRIGORIAN

Hempfield defeated Manheim Township in a Section One boys’ volleyball match at home on Thursday, April 22.

The Knights won in three straight one-sided sets, posting scores of 25-9, 25-8 and 25-4. The victory raised Hempfield’s LL League record to 6-1.

Ryan Givens delivered eight kills and registered four blocks for Hempfield.

“Ryan Givens had nine swings with eight kills,” head coach Mike Vogel pointed out.

Dante Keener had six kills while Adam Gimenson added four kills.

“Adam is a senior outside hitter,” Vogel said. “He wasn’t playing as much earlier in the year, but he is playing a lot more now.”

Mason Orth, who finished with 16 digs, tied Michael Keene with three aces each.

“Yes, we have a bunch of seniors on this team,” Vogel said. “But juniors like Mason Orth and Caden Bonner are doing well keep getting better each and every week.”

Dan Luong and Eric Moldenhauser also contributed five digs each.

The Knights spent Saturday at the State College Tournament. This year, the tourney was not as well attended.

“There were four teams - a lot fewer than usual,” Vogel said. “We beat Seneca Valley in the finals. They are a really strong team out of District Seven and are normally in the state finals. They are a powerhouse from the Pittsburgh area.”

Hempfield also defeated Central York and the host State College squad.

“State College and Central York are both historically good teams,” Vogel added.

For the tournament, Givens compiled 41 kills, hitting at a .400 percentage. Grant Lorelli added 25 kills.

“You don’t really have a lot of aces against quality opponents,” Vogel said. “Adam Gimenson had a really good day. He had three aces and eight kills.”

Orth finished with 47 digs and Gimenson was second with 22.

“Caden Bonner, who is our setter, led us in blocks with nine,” Vogel pointed out. “Givens had eight.”

Grant Lorelli and Gerry Gallagher finished with five and four blocks, respectively.

BASEBALL

Ephrata’s scoring looked like a series of goose eggs with a 2 and a 1 as the bookends in Friday’s game at Landisville. The Mountaineers plated two runs in the opening frame and the decisive third run in the seventh inning.

The Mounts’ pitching held Hempfield to two runs on only two hits as Luke Rotolo and Hunter Rowell worked the combined effort.

The 3-2 loss dropped Hempfield’s record to 5-7 on the year.

In another close game dominated by pitching, the Knights defeated Lampeter-Strasburg on the road Monday evening 2-1.

It was Tim King and Austin Dunlap holding the Pioneers for six innings after the home team had inaugurated the scoring with a Braeden Karpathios RBI single.

King recorded 12 strikeouts while allowing only two hits and two walks. Dunlap came in with two outs in the seventh to earn the save.

The Knights manufactured runs in the sixth inning after a single and a walk put runners on base and a passed ball moved them into scoring position. Cameron Berger ripped a single to drive in Conner Bitts and Caden Woods.

Hempfield’s 18-2 crushing of Section One rival Penn Manor featured a six-run third inning and seven more in the sixth.

In that third inning, Berger, Dunlap, Katch, Seitz, Woods, Gavin Constein and Christian LaBarbera each banged out a base hit.

Luke Fiore, Marcus Rivera, and Bitts each had two-run singles in the seven-run sixth inning.

Dunlap, the starting pitcher, was the recipient of the offensive support. He went five innings for the win.

BOYS’ LACROSSE

The Knights remained unbeaten (6-0) in league play with a dominant 21-2 victory at Cedar Crest on Thursday, April 22. They followed that victory with a 14-6 non-league win over Governor Mifflin two days later, improving to 9-0 overall.

In the Crest game, the Knights scored nine of their goals in the first quarter - part of a match where they launched 45 shots. A total of 12 different players scored goals, including a five-goal game by Max Grube (3a) and four goals by Ryan Heuston.

Ryan Hilton finished with two goals and two assists. Also scoring twice were Toby Marco and A.J. McAlpine.

Matty Wiest played a strong game in goal with eight saves.

Wiest had nine saves in the Mifflin match as the Knights outshot the Mustangs 22-15.

Ryan Hilton and Jason Hilton each had hat tricks while Grube and Zack Antesberger each scored twice. Grube and McAlpine both recorded three assists.

Marco, McAlpine, Caleb Young, and Stephen Pitts each netted one goal.

GIRLS’ LACROSSE

The Hempfield girls were involved in a tight battle with Governor Mifflin on Saturday, April 24. The Mustangs outscored the visitors 9-8 in the first half and held on for a 13-12 margin of victory.

While Kelsea Dague and Kayla Brooks each recorded hat tricks, Brynn Axe also had a big day, scoring two and assisting three times. Whitney Hershey also scored twice while Kenna Price and Catherine Molitor each tallied one goal.

Eryn Murphy recorded nine saves in the high-scoring match.

In league play last Tuesday, Hempfield took control with an 112 first half advantage over Garden Spot. They settled for a 15-5 win behind Kayla Brooks’ five goal, one assist effort. Regan Gillisse (4), Dague (3), Brynn Axe (2g, 1a), Whitney Hershey (1g), and Makenzie Warfel (1a) also contributed.

SOFTBALL

With first place in Section One still within reach, the Hempfield softball team defeated Ephrata on the road Friday, April 23 and came up short at home against Lampeter-Strasburg in an 8-3 loss on Monday.

With five league games remaining, the Knights (6-4) found themselves two games behind first place Penn Manor (8-2)

Courtney Guthrie earned the victory at Ephrata, striking out nine batters in a complete game three-hitter.

Hempfield blew a 3-0 lead against L-S in Monday’s loss. The Knights scored one in the first and two more in the third. The Pioneers finally got on the board in the sixth inning and went on to tie the game in the seventh before a five-run eighth inning spelled heartbreak for Hempfield.

The Pioneers’ Keiva Middleton earned the win, recording 14 strikeouts. Guthrie took the loss, recording seven strikeouts and issuing six walks.

The Knights suffered a tough 3-0 loss to Section One leader Penn Manor on Wednesday. The Comets improved to 13-2 overall as Bella Peters pitched five shutout innings and Aralyn Hoffert pitched the final two for the save.

TENNIS

Alexander Cooke’s comeback win at number three singles helped the tennis team earn a 32 non-league win at Cocalico on Friday, April 23. With each side at two team points, Cooke lost the first set to the Eagles’ Adam Wood 6-4. He responded with a 6-3 win in the second set and a 10-7 tiebreaker win.

Earlier, the teams split the doubles matches as Eli Worley and Trent Meyers won the first doubles 6-4 6-2 whereas Hempfield teammates Jonah Comeaux and Gavin Chamberlain were on the short end of 64, 6-3 sets.

Eric Jordan earned Hempfield’s other team point, taking the number one singles 6-4, 6-4.

The Knights wrapped up the regular season with a 4-9 mark.

Want to score a football jersey signed by Saquon Barkley? Or a new refrigerator? Mark your calendar to attend the Kraybill Mennonite School’s 44th annual pig roast and auction, to be held at the school, 598 Kraybill Church Road, Mount Joy. The event will run on Friday, May 7, from 4 to 9 p.m. and on Saturday, May 8, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“This year, we will have a live auction, outside under a tent, in addition to a simultaneous online auction,” said Liz Heisey, auction chair. “We will have TV screens in the live auction tent showing what’s being shown online. People can bid in person or from their homes.”

The auction will include some big-ticket items such as a lawn tractor, a Yeti cooler and a weekend mountain getaway, Heisey noted. “We will have a handmade foursided picnic table made by a Kraybill parent,” she added. “We will have lots of quilts.”

Highlights of the event include auctioning off class projects. “Each class works together to come up with a themed basket or a personalized project,” Heisey explained, noting that parents in her son’s prekindergarten class refinished an old student desk and chair, and then students put their handprints on it to make a unique keepsake. Teachers also auction off opportunities for students to participate in one-on-one experiences with them, such as trips for miniature golf or ice cream. A children’s tent will feature a Mother’s Day craft station and games. On Friday night, an inflatable obstacle course will be set up for children, and a silent auction will be held in the gym.

In addition to the auction items, the event will feature a pig roast on Friday night and a chicken barbecue on Saturday. Additional food options will include the Mount Joy Rotary french fry truck, Dutch Country Soft Pretzels, hot dogs, pulled pork sandwiches and Gene Wenger’s Meats’ hamburgers, along with baked goods and strawberry pies.

Proceeds from the auction help cover tuition costs and pay for maintenance projects at the school. “We use the money toward offsetting the cost of private education so we can keep our tuition down,” Heisey explained, adding that in 2018 and 2019, the auction raised $110,000 each year, and she’d like to meet that goal this year. Last year’s auction was canceled due to the pandemic.

“It’s great to be able to see other people and share the enthusiasm of the students and alumni who come back every year to see the exciting things we’re doing at Kraybill,” Heisey remarked. “It’s just a great community event.”

She has already submitted her videos to the committee, and they will be judged at the beginning of May.

Final judging will take place on Monday and Tuesday, May 10 and 11, and the contestants’ videos will be posted on the competition’s Facebook page, which may be found by searching for “Grand Prix Kyiv.” Winners will be announced on Wednesday, May 12, followed by a special ballet performance.

“That process helped us figure out how to individualize projects and seek funding for digitizing pockets of our collection,” explained Robin Sarratt, vice president of LancasterHistory.

Recently, LancasterHistory was awarded a Historical & Archival Records Care grant from the Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission to digitize its collections pertaining to the history of 19thcentury congressman Thaddeus Stevens, black residents of Lancaster, and indigenous people since the 18th century. LancasterHistory will use the $4,669 grant to provide online access to 138 items from the Thaddeus Stevens collection as well as 425 documents and manuscripts from 24 different historic collections pertaining to people of color in Lancaster County.

The project will begin in August and is expected to be completed by May 2022. LancasterHistory will work with the Backstage Library Works of Bethlehem to digitize the materials, which will then be uploaded to LancasterHistory’s collections database at https:// collections.lancasterhistory.org. The database is free for public use.

“There are a lot of underrepresented populations in our collection and collections in general across the United States, and although these records have been accessible to the public, we want to make them more widely accessible and bring them into light,” said Heather Tennies, director of archival services at LancasterHistory.

Tennies explained that there is a burden on the researcher to locate these materials because they are difficult to find. Although these documents were accessible to the public before LancasterHistory closed, people had to know where to look and whom to ask in order to access them. As a courtesy to the public and to underrepresented populations, LancasterHistory wants to bring these records to the forefront.

“I’m excited for researchers across the globe to have access to these documents,” added Sarratt. “For people interested in researching their family history, community history, neighborhood history, this project will be impactful.”

Anyone who has material related to black residents of Lancaster and or indigenous people may contact archives@lancasterhistory.org. LancasterHistory will reopen to the public on Wednesday, May 26. For more information, visit www.lancaster history.org.
