The 2024 Mountville Days Carnival will take place on Wednesday to Saturday, May 15 through 18, at Froelich Park, 350 W. Main St., Mountville. On Wednesday and Thursday, the carnival will be open from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday’s and Saturday’s

festivities will be held from 5 to 11 p.m. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Mountville Fire Company No. 1.
The annual summer celebration will feature a variety of attractions, including food trucks, carnival games, amusement park rides and other
family-friendly activities. Wristbands that include unlimited rides may be purchased on Wednesday and Thursday evenings; Friday’s and Saturday’s attendees must purchase tickets to ride the attractions.
The Mountville Days Carnival has steadily grown since it returned in 2021 following the cancellation of the event in 2020 due to safety concerns related to
the coronavirus pandemic. In lieu of the 2020 carnival, a group of local firefighters and carnival organizers held a food truck drivethrough fundraiser. The variation of the annual event was successful, and the carnival committee’s leadership has continued to add new elements every year since.
In recent years, the carnival has introduced additional vendors, new rides and various forms of
entertainment. Mountville Fire Company’s public information officer, Peter Taraborelli, said he hopes to make this year’s carnival the biggest celebration to date.
“The year we pivoted to a food truck drive-through was fabulous; it went really well,” said Taraborelli, who also serves as a member of the carnival committee. “We’re seeing more traffic and visitors than ever before.” As the carnival
has continued to grow, so has the need for volunteers and resources to operate it. This year, the carnival committee has enlisted the help of a marketing agency to help make the celebration one to remember.
The funds raised by the Mountville Days Carnival will help the Mountville Fire Company cover its general operating expenses, equipment costs and firetruck
BY JEFF FALKContested on indoor or outdoor courts, pickleball is a sport similar to tennis and pingpong played with a hard plastic ball and a paddle. Now a local nonprofit is seeking to capitalize on pickleball’s recent popularity to battle human trafficking.
Enter North Star Initiative (NSI).
NSI’s next annual pickleball tournament is almost upon us. The competitive event will raise
money and awareness in the fight against human trafficking while promoting the growth of the blossoming sport.
“It’s a way to get the community involved with something that’s going on in our own backyard,” said Alex Wagner, NSI’s marketing and communications director. “There’s a whole community that is super excited to play. The rules are easy to pick up. It’s something that’s fun and brings everyone together.”

BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDAt any age, amputees and individuals born with limb loss or limb difference face many challenges. But children in America often face additional obstacles when seeking prosthetics and therapy due to a decreased likelihood that their family’s insurance will cover the cost. Nonprofit organization Iron Leg Corp. seeks to provide support for children in Lancaster County who are in need of assistance with obtaining prosthetics.

The Lancaster Catholic High School (LCHS) fine and performing arts department will present “A Fresh Field of Music,” part of its LCHS Community Outreach Concert and Lecture Series, on Thursday, May 16, at 7 p.m. The event will take place at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 31 S. Duke St., Lancaster. The concert will feature pianist Frances Veri, violinist Michael Jamanis, and cellist Susan Moyer Bergeron, who is a Lancaster native. They will premiere Richard Field’s Piano Trio No. 1, which blends elements of classical, jazz, and popular music. They will also present works by Bach, Rachmaninoff, Beethoven, Dvorak, and Piazzolla.
Jamanis is the son of Veri, and he, Bergeron, and Field have known each other since childhood. Field now resides in Budapest, Hungary.
Jamanis and Veri have been artists in residence at the LCHS performing arts series since 2012. They have a history of involvement in the music community of Lancaster and around the world as touring artists. Jamanis directs Music For Everyone’s education program and is a senior adjunct professor at Franklin & Marshall College.
years, and a string lesson program was established in her memory through Music For Everyone in 2023. Sister Cynthia is a music professor.
Bergeron began her musical journey at age 4, and she won numerous awards as a child. A summer spent at the Kinhaven music camp in Weston, Va., inspired her to become a professional cellist. She holds degrees from the New England Conservatory of Music, the University of Akron, and the University of Miami. She is a

Like Jamanis, Bergeron comes from a musical family. Her father, Karl Moyer, taught organ lessons and music courses at Millersville University for 30 years. He was also a music critic for a local newspaper. Bergeron’s late mother, Carolyn, was a well-known string teacher and a member of the Lancaster Symphony Orchestra for many
pickleball tournament will be contested on Saturday, June 15, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Manor Middle School courts, 2950 Charlestown Road, Lancaster. In the case of rain, the event will be pushed back to the next Saturday, June 22, at the same time and place.
Teams of two players can register by going to www.northstar initiative.org/events before Friday, June 7.
“It’s a very family, fun atmosphere,” said Wagner. “There are tons of spectators and supporters. But there’s going to be a lot more going on than just a pickleball
tournament. We also want people to know who we are as an organization.”
NSI’s pickleball tournament draw will be broken down into three divisions: beginner, intermediate and advanced. Each division can accommodate up to 25 teams.
The sponsored event will also include music provided by a DJ.
“It’s a mix of everyone,” said Wagner of individuals expected to attend. “It’s both supporters of NSI and pickleball players. It’s pickleball players who play regularly and neighbors. We’re hoping the brackets will make the tournament
more competitive.”
NSI had so much fun with its initial venture into the competitive pickleball world in 2023 that it decided to stage another tournament this year. Last year’s event netted over $4,000 for NSI, a total the nonprofit is hoping to double this year.
North Star Initiative supporters and staff (from left) Corrine Reed, Alex Wagner and Erica Allgyer enjoy their time at last year’s inaugural North Star Initiative pickleball tournament.
“All of the money raised will directly support our women going through our program at The House,” said Wagner. With facilities to support up to 10 residents, The Harbor is a safe house that provides support in the
form of classes, therapy and life skills development.
“Different people have different capacities to give,” said Wagner. “No matter how big or small it is, it truly makes a difference in the lives of these women. NSI’s ultimate goal is to have survivors graduate and live a life of independence, whatever that looks like for them.”
Located in Lititz and founded in 2010, NSI conducts two other fundraising and awareness events throughout the course of the year: the Welcome to the Battle anti-trafficking event in January and Light Up the Night in October.

maintenance. In addition to benefiting local firefighters, a portion of the carnival’s proceeds will support local nonprofits such as the Mountville Youth Athletic Association and the Mountville Lions Club. In return, the nonprofits will provide volunteers to help things run smoothly.
“The Mountville Days Carnival
is unique. It’s one of the first carnivals of the year, and it’s how a lot of people kick off their summer,” Taraborelli said. “People enjoy being able to support the fire company and local organizations in a way that’s fun for their families. It’s a win-win.”

“We were needing to fill a gap, and we were hearing pickleball all over the place,” said Wagner. “Someone in our office said, ‘Let’s try a pickleball tournament, just because of how popular it is.’ We were like, ‘Let’s give it a try.’ We honestly didn’t know how it was going to go, but it took off. Now we’re hoping to expand it and grow it into the future.”

former member of the New World Symphony, a current member of the Naples Philharmonic, and a founding member of the Dalbergi Trio.
Admission is free. Donations by cash or check will be received for the LCHS Tri-M Music Honor Society’s community service charity project recipient, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.
The Centerville Elementary School Fun Fest will take place on Friday, May 10, at the school, 901 Centerville Road, Lancaster. Festivities will take place from 5 to 8 p.m.
There will be games, prizes, bounce houses, and food. New for 2024 will be a make-and-take STEM booth hosted by Remake Learning. Food trucks will be on-site representing Annie B’s Italian Ice, Deez Tacos, Dutch Country Concessions, Little Cotton Candy Cart, and TriCounty Barbecue. There will also be balloon artists, face painting, and fairy hair sparkles.
Iron Leg is one of the few organizations of its kind, and it will hold an equally unique fundraising event on Saturday, Aug. 3, at Biemesderfer Stadium, 45 Pucillo Drive, Millersville. The event will begin at 7 p.m., and it will entail full-contact football games for individuals above the age of 34 and amputees who are 18 or older. Registration is available online for residents in any part of Lancaster County, and the football teams will be helmed by both former and current coaches from several local school districts, including Donegal, Hempfield, Solanco and Penn Manor.
Practices for the game will begin at the end of May; exact dates and additional information will be announced by Iron Leg once they are available. The registration fee will include equipment such as a uniform, a helmet and shoulder pads. Players are required to bring a seven-pad girdle and turf cleats. To register online, visit https://ironleg.org/ interest-form.
The primary goal of the fundraiser is to acquire the resources that allow Iron Leg to provide financial support and to purchase prosthetics for children with limb loss or limb difference. Due to how quickly children outgrow prosthetics, insurance often will not cover the cost; if it does, it typically only allows the child to obtain a basic prosthetic that is unsuited for physical activities such as playing sports or hiking.
“Most of the time, insurance companies won’t pay for a $30,000 leg if the kid is going to grow out of it in within two years,” said Iron Leg co-founder Matt Millhouse. “But
the thing is, that means the kids miss out on being more active. A basic leg will allow them to walk, but to us that’s not good enough. A kid can run track and field with a good leg.”
In addition to raising funds for children in the community, the goal of Iron Leg’s fundraiser is to give football players an opportunity to play one more game under the lights of the Millersville Marauders’ stadium. Not only do Millhouse and fellow Iron Leg co-founder Sean Laukhuff hope to engage adults who want to stay active and enjoy a full-contact football match, but they also see the fundraiser as an opportunity for players’ children and grandchildren to see them out on the field.
“It was really cool to see the comradery among the coaches when we had our first meeting,” Laukhuff said. “When they coached for their school districts, they were always playing against each other. But now they’re on the same team, and they’re excited to plan out their plays and strategies.”
Sponsorship opportunities are available on Iron Leg’s website. To purchase a ticket to spectate the game, visit www.717shows.com/ events/iron-leg-football-game.
