Pack 37 to hold annual flea market

CubScout Pack 37 will continue its annual tradition of hosting the Memorial Day Flea Market on Monday, May 29 at 7 a.m. The event will be held at the Hempfield Fire Department, located at 19 W. Main St., Landisville. Prior to the event, members of Pack 37 will prepare the field beside the firehouse to allow vendors to set up their tables. Each space in the field is available to be rented by members of the public who wish to sell items or promote their businesses. A section of the field will be reserved for parking, and yard sales will also be held nearby along Main Street in Landisville. “If people want to, they can park their cars in our lot and then explore all of Landisville,” said Clint Schlosser, committee chair of Pack 37. “This way they don’t have to worry about traffic as they look through all of the vendors in town.”

Mountville Library posts plant sale

The Friends of the Mountville Library will host their annual plant sale on Friday, May 19, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Saturday, May 20, from 10 a.m. to noon. The event will be held at Mountville Church of the Brethren, 60 Clay St., Mountville. Free parking will be available in the church parking lot on both days of the sale, and only cash and check will be accepted as payment for plants.

Weis Markets, Landisville Greenhouse and Funk’s Riverview Greenhouses & Produce Stand. Patrons will also have an opportunity to purchase tomato and pepper plants for their gardens at home.

See Plant sale pg 3

The Scouts in Pack 37 will maintain restrooms for the event and will operate a concession stand to sell items such as hot dogs, hamburgers, egg sandwiches and pierogies. The funds raised from the concession stand and vendor space rentals will support a trip that members of Pack 37 take to a new location each year. Last year, the Scouts visited Battleship New Jersey Museum& Memorial for an overnight stay. This year’s trip is currently being planned. Aside from raising funds for its annual trip, Pack 37’s goal for hosting the Memorial Day Flea Market is to teach its members about community service and helping the community.

In addition to an annual escapade, Pack 37 offers a variety of other events throughout the year, including camping trips, hikes, bike rides and rocket launches. Pack 37 also runs the districtwide Pinewood Derby event annually. Once a week, members of the group meet for an

educational activity or arts and crafts session.

During weekly meetings, older Scouts who have passed through the ranks of Pack 37 often return to mentor the Cub Scouts. This gives the younger kids an opportunity to see what they are working toward and to learn from a more experienced Scout. The older kids teach the Cub Scouts about topics such as knife safety and basic camping techniques. Schlosser said his son, who is now a member of Scouts BSA Troop 267, started as a member of Pack 37 and returns regularly to assist the den leader. “He’s acquired confidence and the ability to be a good citizen from being a Scout,” Schlosser said. “It’s cool to watch. As a parent, you can see the program give kids the tools to live their lives on their own.”

Pack 37 will accept vendor space reservations until Sunday, May 28. To reserve a space, visit www.pack37.com.

A variety of items will be available for purchase at the event, including six packs of annuals from Miller’s Greenhouses, perennials and hanging baskets of flowers. A selection of gardening equipment and other plants will also be available for purchase, and these items have been donated by local businesses such as Stauffers of Kissel Hill,

Tee times will be at 7:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., and members of the public may sign up to play in teams of up to four players. All proceeds will benefit Good Samaritan Services (GSS).

created in 1999, andit has continued to grow in the years since. The organization currently has five locations, which are located in Lancaster city, Ephrata, Coatesville, Phoenixville and Kennett Square. “We’re really grateful to EPC for partnering with us for so long. It’s a fun way for people to get involved,” said Rachel Shelley, marketing and communications specialist for GSS. “Fundraisers like these make our growth possible and have allowed us to assist more people than ever before.” In the past year, GSS has served more than 600 people in the local area. Residents to remember ambulance association

An event celebrating the 50th anniversary of the founding of West End Ambulance Association (WEAA) will take place on Saturday, May 13, from noon to 5 p.m. at Maple Grove Community Center, 1420 Columbia Ave., Lancaster. All former crew members of WEAA are invited to attend, as are former crew members of St. Joseph Hospital Medic 1, a partner crew of WEAA.

Attendees are invited to bring uniforms, pictures, papers, or other items

to share. They may also bring refreshments to contribute to the spread.

WEAA was an all-volunteer, nonprofit ambulance association founded in 1973. It started with one ambulance housed in a garage in the rear of Millersville Fire Company and grew to a fleet of four rigs and a building at 100 E. Charlotte St., Millersville. WEAA was replaced by Lancaster EMS (LEMSA) around 2007 or 2008. The building was given to LEMSA, and paid crews replaced the volunteers.

We encourage civic and fraternal groups, schools, churches, scouts, and other local organizations to submit news releases of general interest to the majority of our readership. Primary consideration is given to dated articles of an informative nature–activities and events of local interest sponsored, presented, or planned by area organizations and institutions. Related photographs of good quality are encouraged also, but complete picture identification must be included. Undated articles of general interest are used as space permits. All articles must contain a contact name and telephone number.

A prize drawing will occur at the end of the golf outing on June 9, featuring items that have been donated by local businesses. Prizes in the drawing will include items such as tickets to Longwood Gardens, an adventure package from Refreshing Mountain Retreat & Adventure Center, handmade wooden items, golf equipment and gift cards. The prize drawing will be open to players in the morning session and evening session; if a player’s name is drawn after he or she has left, the player will be contacted to receive the prize. This year, many local businesses have donated items for the prize drawing for the first time. “It’s really neat to have fresh people involved and helping the mission,” said Rachel Stebbins, EPC’s marketing director. “People in Lancaster are very generous and are more than happy to support the cause.”

Food will be included in the cost of admission for the event. Peters’ BBQ will provide meals for lunch and dinner; breakfast from Joe on the Go Coffee Co. will be offered in the morning; and boxed lunches will be provided by Trio Bar and Grill. Drinks such as water and iced tea will be offered throughout the day from a beverage cart.

The funds raised from the EPC Golf

Outing will support a variety of projects and initiatives that GSS has begun implementing this year. The Kennett Square facility was opened in December 2022, and the organization plans to break ground for a new office building in Ephrata this summer. The addition of the Ephrata offices will allow caseworkers to give their clients more privacy while assisting them; previously, staff members needed to share offices due to space limitations. GSS has also started to offer free, inhouse counseling services to its clients. By removing barriers such as cost and transportation, GSS hopes to give accessible support to clients who are experiencing trauma.

“There’s something about giving back that brings out the best in everyone. Everyone is excited to be there supporting GSS,” Stebbins said. “Whether you’re a regular golfer, a newbie, or somewhere in the middle, you’re going to have a great time.”

Registration for the EPC Golf Outing can be completed up to 48 hours before the event, but space will become limited after Friday, May 19. To register, visit https://epcgolf outing.com/register.

The tradition of holding an annual plant sale was started by the Friends of the Mountville Library in 2015 and has continued every year since, with the exception of 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The event was created with the goal of raising funds to support the Lancaster Public Library’s Mountville branch. For the first sale, the organization set up a small stand to sell plants on the corner of College Avenue and Clay Street, raising $400 from sales. The plant sale has steadily grown over the years, sprouting into a larger event that helps to fund the library’s programs.

“Every year we have more and more people coming and buying plants. People are always asking when the next one is,” said Karen Denlinger, president of the board for the Friends of the Mountville Library. “We try to have good products and always get a lot of donations. People come because they love the library and want to support it.”

In addition to the plant sale, the Friends of the Mountville Library

also coordinate a book sale semiannually. Both events serve as the largest fundraisers for the library throughout the year. The library also partners with Scoops Ice Cream and Grille at the end of every summer for a fundraising night. For the fundraiser, Scoops donates a percentage of its sales to the library.

Denlinger said that the Friends of the Mountville Library are currently planning an event to celebrate the library’s 60th anniversary in the fall. More details will be released as the event draws near, but Denlinger hopes to recognize longstanding members of the library during the celebration. Those who have been members of the library for over 50 years can contact the library for more information.

The Friends of the Mountville Library will accept donations of perennials, house plants and gardening equipment for the sale on Thursday, May 18, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Mountville Church of the Brethren. For more information, text Denlinger at 717-572-4024.

Lancaster County Sportsmen for Youth will host the 28th annual Lancaster County Youth Field Day on Saturday, June 3, from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Northern Lancaster County Game and Fish Protective Association, 180 Forest Road, Denver.

The event introduces kids ages 10

to 15 to outdoor activities. During the event, children will spend 35 minutes at each of 11 stations. The stations will be archery, canoeing, fish/fly fishing, muzzleloading, .22 rifle, trapping, trap shooting, turkey, waterfowlers, PGC wildlife education/Raven Ridge Wildlife Center and beagles.

All equipment will be supplied, and personal equipment will not be permitted. There will be no charge for anything, including lunch, which will be provided to all in attendance, both participants and those accompanying them. Each participant will receive a T-shirt that must be worn as an external garment during the entire day for safety purposes. All activities are meant to be hands-on. Field Day will be held rain or shine, and attendees should dress for the weather.

Space is limited and preregistration is required. To register, visit www.register-ed.com/events /view/192977.

The Lancaster County Youth Field Day is held on the first Saturday of June each year, with the location rotating between a few sportsmen’s clubs in the county. For additional information and previous years’ photos, search for “Lancaster County Sportsmen for Youth” on Facebook.

The following projects were awarded funding: the creation of the Landisville Education Center Social Skills Club Pilot Program to promote peer-topeer relationship-building, improve social skills and encourage positive engagement with teachers; the pur-

chase of heart rate monitors for middle school students to allow them to connect class content with immediate information about their pulse; the creation of a podcast production studio in the high school library; the purchase of surface temperature sensors and no-touch forehead thermometers to help high school science students better understand key roles played by nurses in hospitals and nursing homes; the purchase of a ceramics wheel to enhance the arts curriculum and to teach elementary students about all forms of clay sculpture-making.

Also, bringing a hands-on exhibit provided by the Lancaster Science Factory to the district; purchasing the online program “Digital Breakout,” which provides hundreds of online digital “escape” rooms for students to solve math, science, ELA and other problems; bringing the Mari Black Trio to the district for a residency to provide clinics for all students in the district who play stringed instruments; and creating a “Zen Zone” to help middle school students who receive emotional support services in special education.

A full list of the foundation’s 2022-23 grants is posted at the aforementioned website.

This spring, the founda-

tion will also give $26,500 in scholarships to graduating Hempfield seniors. Wegmans, AHA offer CPR education

The American Heart Association (AHA) and Wegmans are providing Hands-Only CPR education resources in the community. Hands-Only CPR is quick, simple and easy to learn.

Lehman captures L-L League singles crown

Cooper Lehman and Eric Jordan both made it to the championship matches of their respective singles flights of the L-L League Championships. The tournament opened on Thursday, April 26. The championship matches wrapped up on Monday, May 1 at Conestoga Valley.

“We were at CV on Thursday and with anticipated rain for the weekend, at Hempfield Rec Center on Friday,” said head coach Mindi Bell.

Lehman made it through the Class-AAA Flight One rounds fairly easily, defeating Ben Ginder of Manheim Central 6-0, 6-1 and also winning 6-1, 6-1 against Cedar Crest’s Joe Shkreli.

He then topped Lance Wilson of Ephrata 6-1, 6-2 in the semis, setting up a championship match against another Crest player, Viseth Meng.

Meng came close in the second set, but fell short as Lehman triumphed 6-2, 7-5.

“That was a tough match,” said Bell. “Meng is a really good player. On top of that, there were the crazy windy conditions that both of them had to deal with.

“Meng doesn’t make errors,” Bell added. “Cooper had to hit a lot more balls to win points. He had to work harder. The second set, especially, was really tight.”

Meng and teammate Charlie Robbins captured the Flight One doubles championship, bouncing back from a 6-1 loss to Lehman and Jordan to win the next two sets 6-3, 10-8 in the semis. Jordan and Lehman were the top seeded twosome in those brackets, earning a firstround bye and posting a 6-0, 6-2 second-round win.

In the Flight Two singles, Jordan finished as the runner up. Zack Taylor of Manheim Township finished first with an 8-1 defeat of Jordan in the finale. Jordan won 8-0 before posting an 8-2 win against Hayden Winey of Pequea Valley. In the semis, he topped Pierce Leaman of McCaskey.

“Eric played a tough kid from McCaskey,” Bell said. “He had not faced him during the regular season because Eric played number two singles.”

In Flight Three and Flight Four singles, the Knights were

represented by Andre Hurst and Sam Keener, respectively. Hurst fell to Krishna Chinasammy of Township in the semis. Keener lost his semifinal match to MT’s Jake Palandjian.

“Both of them lost to the eventual champion,” Bell pointed out.

Tristan Coyne and Ryan Malesic placed second in the Flight Three doubles. They posted back-to-back 8-3 wins and won their semifinals match 8-5.

“They were unseeded and they placed second, which is very exciting,” Bell said.

Keener and Hurst fell in the second round of Flight Two doubles to Taylor and Chinasammy SOFTBALL

Hempfield belted 12 hits and defeated McCaskey 16-0 on Friday, April 27, earning their third straight win. Chloe Diener was 3-for-4 with four RBI. Sydney Weaver threw a three-inning no-hitter.

On Monday, the Knights topped Warwick 4-1. Two costly Warwick errors helped Hempfield plate four runs. The Knights also collected nine hits.

“We’ve given them their only two losses in the section,” head coach Chris Landis pointed out. “We have an outside chance of winning the section because of the season tiebreaker.”

Credit also went to pitcher Carley Ernst, who baffled the Warwick batters.

“Carley Ernst allowed only two hits to arguably the best offense in the league,” Landis said. “She had 10 strikeouts.”

Ernst kept on racking up the strikeouts. In the Manheim Township game on Tuesday, May 2, she recorded her 100th strikeout of the season. Hempfield provided plenty of run support for their ace, winning 12-3.

Ernst went 3-for-4 with three runs. She struck out 15 in a complete game effort.

“I pulled up Trina Beck from JV,” Landis said. “She took advantage of her opportunity and drove in two runs on two base hits.”

The win streak reached six as the Knights topped Cedar Crest 15-0 on Wednesday, May 3. Ernst (5K) went two innings. Weaver pitched the third inning.

Kali Peifer was 3-for-3 with

four RBI’s, dashing around the bases on an inside-thepark home run. Diener was 2for-3 two RBI’s Mikayla Hughes hit a home run and drove in two.

VOLLEYBALL

Hempfield won a solid 3-0 Section One match over CV on April 27, improving to 6-3 on the year. It was the Knights’ third straight win.

Hempfield won 25-19, 2517 and 25-20.

“The CV match was nice to see,” head coach Ken Eiser said. “We weren’t trusting ourselves early in the season. Penn Manor and Conestoga Valley were good steps in the right direction.”

Aiden Beiler and Finley Hunt led the team in kills with 12 and 11, respectively. Brady Rigard recorded 19 digs while Cole Jackson racked up 30 assists. Ethan Earhart registered three blocks.

“Everyone has been working hard to iron out mistakes and play within the systemplay with each other,” Eiser added. “It’s great to see when they’re clicking. But there is always more to work on.”

On Tuesday, May 2, Hempfield hosted Warwick.

The Warriors dominated in the first and third sets, winning 25-12 and 25-17.

“We played well in sets 2 and 4, winning 25-17 and 25-18,” said Eiser. “It was a great match overall and hopefully we will get another shot at them in districts,” Eiser concluded.

Earhart had 17 kills and seven blocks. Jackson added 34 assists and 19 digs. Hunt served two aces.

BASEBALL

The Hempfield lineup was coming off consecutive games with 10 runs each coming into Tuesday’s game with Manheim Township. In the home game on Friday, April 27 as well as Monday’s game at Warwick, the Knights won 10-0. Tuesday, Township used a five-run third inning to help defeat the visiting Knights 8-5.

Drew Benchich doubled to drive in two Hempfield runs in the fifth inning, cutting the deficit to 5-3. Hempfield made it a one-run game on Brayden Hostetter’s sacrifice fly in the top of the sixth.

Charles Sheerer’s two-run single started things off in the Warwick game. Hostetter had

a two-out bases loaded single for two more runs. A two-run homer by Benchich also highlighted the offense as did a Logan Harelson’s RBI double.

In the McCaskey game on Friday, a triple by Katch plated two early runs. He scored on a Benchich sacrifice fly. Sheerer’s triple plated two runs in the third inning. Katch singled in one run and Aiden Rodenberger drove in another.

Hunter Williams pitched a two-hit shutout.

GIRLS’ LACROSSE

Coming off a tough loss to Manheim Township, the girls’ lacrosse team topped South Western 10-8 on Monday, May 1 at Hempfield. Ella Ashton recorded four key saves in the close contest.

On the offensive side, Natalie Bole notched a hat trick while Whitney Hershey, Isabelle Masengarb (1a), and Mia Brennan each scored twice. Hattie Mack also chipped in with a goal.

BOYS’ LACROSSE

The boys’ lacrosse team won two of its last three games with a 14-5 loss at Lampeter-Strasburg sandwiched between victories over Penn Manor and New Oxford

Hempfield edged Penn Manor 11-7 on Thursday April 26 as Jason Hilton poured in five goals. Zack Antesberger (1a) notched a hat trick while Toby Marco, Drew Bennett (1a) and Isaiah Martin each tallied one

goal. Phil Krauser added one assist.

Saturday at LampeterStrasburg, Marco scored two for the Knights with one goal each by Martin, Hilton, and Bennett.

The offense found its groove in Wednesday’s nonleague 19-4 win. Hilton’s fivegoal production and four goals by Logan Klinger led the way. Julian Morales added a hat trick while Antesberger had two goals and two assists.

Martin and Krauser each scored once as did Evan Bush, Dylan Ashlskog and Logan

Pennell

TRACK

On Senior Night, Monday, May 1, both the boys’ and girls’ track teams claimed victories with the girls’ team topping Lebanon 98-51 and the boys posting a 109-41 win.

Speaking of seniors, Aidan Hodge had a special night on the track.

“Aidan’s record-setting 800 was phenomenal,” said head coach Curt Rogers. Hodge ran a time of 1:52.55, setting a school record and earning a LL League Meet qualifying time.

Also earning first was the 4x100 relay team of Eddie Asadu, Tate Martin, Gabe Benjamin and 200m winner Xavier Peralta. Asadu also won the 100m dash with an LL League qualifying time of 11.24. Martin won both hurdling events.

Benjamin, who placed second in the 100m, was part of

the winning 4x400 with Sam Freedman, Carson Lieberman, and Spencer Ashba.

Brody Weachter’s first place pole vault, Andy Garcia’s 20foot-7 long jump, Pete Wenzel’s 148-11 javelin toss and Jordan Thode’s 116-3 discus also highlighted Hempfield’s day. Thode also won the shot put at 37-4.5 and Garcia also claimed the triple jump at 428.75 - good for an LL qualifier.

Joe Fahrney won the 3,200 and 1600.

Bella Heisey and 100m winner Izzy Heisey teamed up with Elli Yaeger and 400m winner Evi Sahd for a win in the girls’ 4x400.

“Ella Wolfe’s 1600 looked effortless,” said Rogers, referring to the sixth fastest time (school history) of 5:18.55. Ashley Page took the 3,200 in 13:58.15.

Selena Lee, Norah Rynier, Ava Pagano, and Callie Herr won the 4x800. Roz Scott (2:31.83) was first in the 800m.

The 4x100 team of Mya Thompson, Leah Brenneman, Arianaliz Olivencia and Izzy Heisey also had a winning time. Bella Heisey (300 hurdles) and Julia Sweigart (100m hurdles) also earned first.

“Our jumpers are starting to get their best jumps as the season is heading into the championship meets,” Rogers added.

Kylie Ridilla took second in the triple jump, and Sydney Rhoads won the high jump.
