Cub Scouts to hold annual fundraiser
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDCub Scout Pack 37 will host its annual community fundraiser from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Monday, May 27, at the Hempfield Fire Department, 19 W. Main St., Landisville. The event, an outdoor market, will include a multitude of stands run by parent volunteers and members of the community, who will sell various goods and refreshments. The proceeds will assist Pack 37 with covering its general expenses and costs of Scouting activities throughout the year.
Members of Pack 37 and parent volunteers will prepare sections of the fire department’s property for vendors to set up tables and tents when they arrive. Each space in the field may be rented for a set price by individuals and business owners in the community with items to sell. The event will coincide with various flea markets held throughout Landisville on Memorial Day.
Once the helpers have finished
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDEvery year in May, local residents participate in the Hempfield recCenter’s Memorial Day Flea Market to catch up with their neighbors, browse a wide variety of merchandise and hopefully get rid of boxes of unused items found during spring cleaning. This year, the event will take place on Monday, May 27, at Amos Herr Park, 1700 Nissley Road, Landisville. The rain-or-shine outdoor flea market will be held from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., and the proceeds
setting up the area for vendors, they will run a concession stand to sell a variety of snacks and refreshments, including breakfast sandwiches, bagels, doughnuts, hot dogs, hamburgers, pierogies, chicken potpie, pulled pork sandwiches and beverages. Young Scouts will also take orders from residents in the surrounding neighborhoods and deliver food to raise funds for Pack 37. Members of Scouts BSA Troop 267 will assist with the fundraiser by offering attendees parking by donation.
In addition to many steadfast patrons throughout Landisville, the Pack 37 fundraiser is supported by several local businesses. Every year, Wegmans, Stauffers of Kissel Hill, Martin’s Snacks and other nearby companies make financial donations or supply Pack 37 with food to sell at the concession stand.
Vendor setup will take place at 5 a.m. on the day of the fundraiser. Pack 37 asks that vendors refrain from selling food items to avoid diverting

business from the Scouts’ concession stand. Community members and local businesses may register as vendors for the fundraiser by sending an email to memorialdaypack37@gmail .com or by calling 717-742-0855.
The annual market serves as Pack 37’s largest fundraiser of the year, and all proceeds from
the event allow pack leaders to offer enrichment activities to Scouts. Frequent Scouting activities include camping trips, group hikes and bike rides. The proceeds also help Pack 37 with the cost of supplies for its annual Pinewood Derby as well as a larger Pinewood Derby competition that Pack 37 hosts for other packs
in the region. “It all goes toward the kids,” said Pack 37 treasurer Eric Kelshaw. “Some people don’t even buy anything, but they come out to donate because they believe in what we try to do: raise good young humans to be good older humans.”

New isn’t necessarily improved; bigger isn’t necessarily better. But when the topic is mental health services, more is almost always desirable.
Samaritan Center is expanding its counseling services. It’s a move intended to provide more hope for a healthier, happier and better-adjusted community.
“We know that counseling works, that it improves lives,” said Steve Schedler, executive director of Samaritan Center. “For many,
it’s a game-changer. What people come in with is very diverse, but there are some common threads. Counseling can give people a different way of thinking and navigating emotions and how they handle relationships. There are also these positive examples of people growing.”
At the beginning of April, Samaritan Center opened a new counseling space at 33 N. Market St., Lancaster, to augment the mission started at its main location at 1803 Oregon Pike, Lancaster. In addition to increasing

Vendors may register by contacting Catherine Hamby at 717-898-3102, ext. 141, or chamby@ hempfieldrec.com.
The proceeds from the flea market will benefit several community outreach programs organized by Hempfield recCenter. The rec center’s programs include the Everyone Belongs initiative, which serves as a financial assistance program to make its activities accessible to
anyone in the community. Through the Everyone Belongs fund, Hempfield recCenter is able to cover registration fees for individuals who cannot afford to participate in youth athletic classes, summer camps and other programs. The rec center often partners with Hempfield School District to meet the needs of students in the area.
In addition to the Everyone Belongs campaign, the proceeds from the flea market will help the rec center continue community service efforts such as distributing gift cards to local families during the holiday season. “The flea market itself is a tradition that hasn’t changed much over the years. But we continue to explore ways Hempfield recCenter can be a part of the community, whether in-house or reaching out beyond our walls,” said Hamby, the rec center’s membership director. The flea market is organized each year through a partnership between Hempfield recCenter and the East Hempfield Township. This event will feature choirs from four local churches. In addition to the choir from Zion led by John Landis, the festival will include singers from Hempfield Church of the Brethren led by Laura Meiser, Landisville Mennonite Church led by Eric Henderson, and Wayside Presbyterian Church led by Janelle Pabon. More than 50 singers will be involved. Each group will present three or four anthems from its recent repertoire. After the individual groups have performed, all participants will join in singing two pieces under the direction of guest conductor Alejandro Ramos, the choral director at Hempfield High School. The first number will be “Draw the Circle Wide,” a folk-style hymn written by Gordon Light in 1994. This anthem speaks to the need for everyone to reach beyond their comfort zone to include others. The second combined piece will be “The

Lord Bless You and Keep You,” a farewell anthem that includes “Sevenfold Amen.”
A reception will follow in the social hall and will feature desserts provided by members of Zion. All participants and audience members are invited to attend.
The concert is free and open to the public, and a freewill offering will be accepted. Parking is available in front of and behind the church as well as in the overflow lot on Cooper Street. Audience members from other churches are encouraged to carpool.
The event aims to build relationships within the community and foster fellowship among neighbors.

Church sets annual basement sale
Samaritan Center
ROOFING
Bethany Presbyterian Church, 25 N. West End Ave., Lancaster, will host its annual spring basement sale on Saturday, May 18, from 8 a.m. to noon. The two rooms on the church’s ground floor will feature household goods, tools, jewelry, books, puzzles, décor, and furniture, including end tables, TV stands, and a hutch. The church women will offer hamburger barbecue, chili, coffee, and baked goods to eat on-site or for takeout.
During the event, the church-sponsored Boy Scout Troop 4 will sell hamburgers, hot dogs, chips, desserts, and drinks, with eat-in and takeout options available. Proceeds will support the Scouts’ summer camping trip.

Attendees should enter the sale area through the front stairs or via the accessible ramp at the back of the building.

the nonprofit’s coverage area, the downtown office will allow Samaritan Center to reach more people and provide more mental health services.
“We’re very aware of the gap between demand and the availability of counseling,” said Schedler. “We’re involved in that conversation. The good news is that we’ve seen a turn in people’s willingness to get help since COVID. Who doesn’t need to talk to somebody? Now we’re seeing the response to that. We saw a record demand over the last four years. Progress is being made, but it will take years to level back out.”
Housed on the fourth floor of a historic building near Lancaster Central Market, Samaritan Center North Market features five new counseling offices. Samaritan Center, which is operated by 41 employees, 25 of whom are full-time or part-time therapists, has added five new counselors.
“It’s everyone in the community, from all walks of life,” said Schedler of Samaritan Center’s counseling clientele. “We’ve seen all ages reach out. It could be older adults; some of our counselors work with children and teens, families,

couples, individuals. There really are no groups of folks not reaching out. We have in-person and virtual capabilities, so we can work with anyone in Pennsylvania.
But the bulk of our clients seen in-house are Lancaster County residents.”
In 2023, Samaritan Center provided more than 14,000 counseling sessions. With the addition of North Market, Samaritan Center now has the capability to provide an additional 6,000 sessions.
“Samaritan Center does many things in the community, and counseling is just one of them,” said Schedler. “We just reached a point where we were out of space. We wanted to come up with a way to serve more people, and we’re excited about being in the city for the first time. Our goal is to provide improved mental health to everyone. Samaritan Center’s mission is to be as accessible as possible
to meet people’s needs for counseling services, and now we’re more accessible than ever.”
Samaritan Center was established in 1987 by a group from Highland Presbyterian Church, 500 E. Roseville Road, Lancaster, interested in providing accredited, faith-based counseling. Over the last 37 years, the services Samaritan Center provides have changed to meet the evolving needs of the community.
“It was really a leap of faith to jump out and start a new counseling center,” said Schedler. “Over time, Samaritan Center has established itself by providing high-quality counseling services. Mostly through word of mouth, many lives have been changed. We’ve had a legacy of growing thoughtfully.”
