Local Boy Scouts achieve Eagle rank
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDTwo Scouts from BSA Troop 267 in West Hempfield Township recently achieved the rank of Eagle Scout: Hempfield High School junior Bryson Long and Lancaster Country Day School senior William Calder. Bryson’s and William’s achievements follow several years of hard work and dedication to the Boy Scouts and to the local community, and the members of Troop 267 will honor the two young men during a banquet on Wednesday, May 22.
Each Scout completed a service project as one of the prerequisites for earning the rank of Eagle Scout. Bryson’s project entailed the construction of hockey stick racks, which he installed in the storage room of the York Polar Bears ice hockey team. Bryson, who has played for the Polar Bears for the last seven years, said the racks were a sorely needed addition to the room; previously, players placed their sticks on the floor between games and practices. “I’ve been with (the Polar Bears) for a while, so I have a good relationship with everybody,” Bryson said. “I wanted to do something for the team, versus another organization I’m not familiar with.”
“It was really important to him to support the team,” said Bryson’s father, Richard Long, of the Eagle Scout project. “The team has given back to him a ton
over the years as far as social and physical development. This was the perfect way for Bryson to combine his love of hockey and Scouting.” The York Polar Bears is an ice hockey program that seeks to give children and young adults with special needs an opportunity to participate in the sport in an environment that caters to their individual needs and abilities.
With the help of fellow Troop 267 members and parents of other players on the team, Bryson spent several months
planning the project, budgeting for supplies and communicating with local vendors. Once the details were squared away, Bryson and his helpers spent four hours assembling the racks to complete the Eagle Scout project in March 2024.
William’s Eagle Scout project involved designing five bat boxes, which are artificial roosts used to foster bat populations in areas with few roosting sites. William led a team of troop members to build the boxes and install them at Susquehanna
Riverlands State Park in York County. William also serves as Troop 267’s historian and patrol leader.
“We are thrilled to celebrate William and Bryson’s incredible achievement of reaching the rank of Eagle Scout,” Troop 267 leadership said in a post on Facebook. “This rank is the highest achievement in the Boy Scouts of America, symbolizing a commitment to excellence, leadership, and community service.”

BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDOne hundred original pieces of art by Ron Ettelman will be auctioned at 6 p.m. on Thursday, June 6, at Boltz Auction Company, 3601 Columbia Ave., Lancaster. Attendees will have an opportunity to bid on various artworks created by the prolific Mountville artist, and proceeds from the auction will benefit the Lancaster Museum of Art, the Demuth Foundation and the Ware Center at Millersville University. A reception will start at 5 p.m., and a preview will take place on Wednesday, June 5, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. This is the second time Ron Ettelman has organized an auction for his work. The first auction was held in 2021 after he and his wife, Virginia, closed their custom frame shop and art gallery, Dream Framer and the Ron Ettelman Gallery, in Mountville. Ron and Virginia operated the business for 47 years. After closing the doors to Dream Framer, Ron needed to move his large collection in a short period of time; the auction allowed him to find homes for his artworks quickly, in addition to raising funds for local art museums. Ron, who is now 80 years old, decided to hold another auction this year
CEF to offer summer programs for kids
Child Evangelism Fellowship of Lancaster County (CEF) is celebrating its 80th year of reaching children with the Good News of Jesus in the local community. Many people are familiar with the after-school Good News Club programs that are held in the public schools, but they may not be aware that CEF also offers summer programs.
Teens and young adults complete a rigorous training program called Christian Youth in Action (CYIA) to serve with the ministry. These young people, along with CEF staff members, devote their summers to sharing the Gospel with children. All workers and hosts of clubs must complete several required background checks to ensure the safety of all
children.
This summer, CEF is partnering with four churches that will host vacation Bible school (VBS) with the theme “One Way.” VBS will be held on Mondays to Fridays. The program is open to children ages 5 to 12, and it will include Bible lessons, missionary stories, games, Christ-centered songs, crafts, and Bible verse memorization.
VBS programs will be held from July 8 to 12 from 9 a.m. to noon at Grace Baptist Church, 1899 Marietta Ave., Lancaster; from July 15 to 19 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Mountville Mennonite Church, 205 Froelich Ave., Mountville; from July 29 to Aug. 2 from 9 a.m. to noon at Proclamation Presbyterian Church, 598 Kraybill Road, Mount Joy; and from July 29 to Aug. 2 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Crossings Community Church, 8 S. Erisman Road, Manheim.
In addition to VBS, 5-Day Club programs will be available at locations throughout the county. These 90-minute clubs will be held on Mondays to Fridays and are open to children ages 5 to 12. They will include Bible lessons, creative learning activities, missionary stories, songs, Scripture
memorization, and games.
The 5-Day Clubs will take place from July 15 to 19 from 10:30 a.m. to noon at Landisville Camp Meeting, 201 Church St., Landisville; from July 15 to 19 from 1:30 to 3 p.m. at River’s Edge Fellowship, 420 S. Christian St., Lancaster; from July 22 to 26 from 10 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. at Christ the King Church, 2249 Marietta Ave., Lancaster; from July 22 to 26 from 1:30 to 3 p.m. at Breakout Ministries, 2400 Anita Court, Leola; from July 29 to Aug. 2 from 1:30 to 3 p.m. at St. Paul’s Evangelical Congregational
Church, 2120 Main St., Lititz; and from Aug. 5 to 9 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at Bethel Evangelical Congregational Church, 3716 Main St., Conestoga.
All VBS and 5-Day Club programs are free of charge, but registration is required at www .ceflancaster.org.
CEF will offer additional 5-Day Club locations hosted by screened, private residents with background clearances. To learn more, call the CEF office at 717-569-5412.

With spirit, Aaron’s Acres Angels will present “The Garfield Movie”
BY JEFF FALKFamilies spending time together for a good cause is one of the most rewarding types of fun. It’s a wholesome experience that can only be enhanced by the presence of angels - Aaron’s Acres Angels, that is.
Aaron’s Acres Angels is a group of 20 middle school and high school students from the Manheim Township, Conestoga Valley and Hempfield school districts, as well as from Linden Hall School for Girls in Lititz. The group of young volunteers lends a hand with Aaron’s Acres events when it can.
One of its next efforts is organizing and marketing an Aaron’s Acres’ family movie night at Penn Cinema, 541 Airport Road, Lititz, on Thursday, May 30. The event will feature “The Garfield Movie,” with showings at 4:30 and 6 p.m. In addition to promoting the family movie night with flyers and posts on social media, Aaron’s Acres Angels will be greeting people and selling snacks to benefit the cause on the night of the event.
Everyone is welcome to attend, and all proceeds from the event will go to support Aaron’s Acres, a nonprofit located at 1861 Charter Lane, Suite 114, Lancaster, that is dedicated to enhancing the lives of young people with disabilities. Aaron’s Acres is hoping to garner $1,500 in donations from the event.
Tickets can be purchased at the door or in advance by going to https://secure .givelively.org/event/aar ons-acres/aaron-s-acres -night-at-the-movies-2024.

LCAA seeks artists for juried show
Lancaster County Art Association (LCAA) has issued a call for artists to participate in its Juried Fine Art and Craft Show, which will take place on Saturday, Oct. 12. The show will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Kauffman and Hoffman buildings at the Solanco Fairgrounds on Park Avenue in Quarryville. For more information, email fineartcraftshow@ lcaaonline.org or call 717-687-7061.
offer nights out for families in the community, and it also serves as a fundraiser for Aaron’s Acres,” said Kate Mullen, the director of development and community relations for Aaron’s Acres. “It’s family focused. It’s a special evening for families to come and see a movie together. The support we receive allows us to provide programs for young people with disabilities in our community.”
The Angels have been associated with Aaron’s Acres for about four years now. During that time, they’ve supported and assisted with similar events, like bingo, Aaron’s Acres summer camp programs, crafts, games, bake sales and other fundraising activities.
“It’s young people helping young people,” said Mullen.
“They brainstormed and together came up with the name. I think they felt like the term ‘angel’ kind of means they’re protecting and watching over our participants, and they felt it was an appropriate name.”
“We talk a lot about disability awareness,” Mullen continued. “It’s a great opportunity for them to come together and do community service and give back. Everywhere they go in their lives they’ll be around people who are unique and different in many ways. It’s important to appreciate that uniqueness. Maybe this experience will allow them to be more comfortable. Hopefully it’ll make them feel comfortable being active participants in their community.”
“(The Angels) are really interesting kids involved with a lot of different things,” added Mullen.
“It’s interesting the kinds of things they fit into their schedules. They’re involved with a lot of other things - sports, musicals, National Honor Society. We’re there with them to show them heart and kindness. I’m really happy I get to be a part of it.”

Art auction
to help him relocate his creations and support the art community in Lancaster.
“I’m calling it a ‘one-man auction,’ which I thought would be a goofy, fun thing to call it,” Ron said. “This year’s situation is almost identical to the first auction. For the first one, I thought, ‘What am I going to do now that the shop is closed?’ This one is ‘I’m 80 now. What am I going to do with all this stuff?’”
Ron describes his work as spontaneous, and he said no two pieces are the same. The auction will include items made over the course of Ron’s 60-year-long
career, and many of the artworks will come to the sale from a recent exhibit at the Lancaster Museum of Art titled “Visions from the World of Ron Ettelman.” Ron will donate half of all proceeds from the auction to the local art community. Twenty-five percent of the profits will be split between the Lancaster Museum of Art and the Demuth Foundation, and 25% will be given to Millersville University to support creative programs and events at the Ware Center on the school’s campus. “Virginia and I are very active in the arts and its community here in Lancaster,” Ron said.
The auction will feature several unique items created by local artist Ron Ettelman.
