Hempfield Foundation will hold golf fundraiser
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDThe Hempfield Foundation will hold its annual golf tournament on Friday, June 7, at Four Seasons Golf Club, 949 Church St., Landisville. The event will kick off with registration and lunch at 11:30 a.m., followed by a shotgun scramble start at 1 p.m.
Players may participate in the tournament in teams of up to four golfers. A fee has been set per player, and active Hempfield School District employees may register at a discounted price. Each entry will include lunch, green and cart fees, tournament skill challenges and wine and beer during the reception and awards ceremony. All food will be provided by Blue Collar Restaurant, Bar and Catering.
Sponsorships are available to purchase for individual holes and on-course skill challenge prizes, as are partnership opportunities with the Hempfield Foundation. The foundation has extended the registration and sponsorship deadline until Monday, June 3. To register as a player or to become a sponsor, visit www.hempfield foundation.org or email hempfield foundation@gmail.com.
The Hempfield Foundation holds its annual golf tournament to sustain its efforts to enrich the lives of both students and teachers throughout the school district. The organization’s primary initiative involves numerous teacher grants and scholarship programs offered at every school and grade level. “The golf outing helps us to expand all the different areas we can support, including STEAM programs, reading initiatives, support services and entrepreneurship classes at the high
school,” said Scott Bishop, executive director of the Hempfield Foundation. “We try really hard to acquire resources from the event that allow us to make an impact from kindergarten to high school.”
In addition to grants and scholarships, the Hempfield Foundation uses the proceeds from the golf outing to fund miscellaneous district-wide initiatives. In April, the foundation purchased and distributed special glasses to all Hempfield students and staff members to safely watch the solar eclipse. “A lot happens organically. When there’s an idea for a new program, we like to be there to jump on it and engage our students and teachers,” Bishop said.
The end of the 2023-24 school session concludes the first year the Hempfield Foundation board
has partnered with two student representatives. Last fall, Hempfield High School students Alex Gregory and Tobin Marco were selected to attend board meetings and provide a student perspective on where to focus the foundation’s efforts. Gregory will remain on the board as a representative as she enters her senior year, and the foundation will choose a new student to replace Marco now that he has graduated. “It was a great first year; (Gregory and Marco) have been active throughout the year by participating in different events, providing input on grants we’ve awarded and representing their classmates,” Bishop said. “Everybody’s been really pleased
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDMulberry Art Studios, 21 N. Mulberry St., Lancaster, recently held its sixth annual We Love Our Pets show. The exhibit opened on May 3, and it featured more than 170 pieces of artwork by pet owners and artists from every school district in the county to celebrate the unique bond between humans and their animal companions. The show will remain at the gallery until the end of May.
The opening reception was attended by veterinarians and vendors of pet accessories and other animal-related products, as well as representatives of the Sebastian Foundation for Animal Rescue. Every year, Mulberry Art Studios uses its We Love Our Pets show to support the Sebastian Foundation by donating a portion of the proceeds from art sales to the organization. The Sebastian Foundation helps to locate homes for animals throughout Lancaster County, and its representatives were accompanied by several adoptable dogs on opening night. The event raised more than $800 for the foundation. We Love Our Pets’ opening night
BY JEFF FALKWhat makes Occupational Development Center of Lancaster’s (ODC) Food Truck Fest so popular?
A. Its festive, family-friendly atmosphere
B. Its wide assortment of delicious dishes
C. Manheim Township and its surrounding communities’ generous nature
D. All of the above
If you guessed D, you’re correct.
Another ODC Food Truck Fest, the sixth, is right around the corner. And there are no reasons to believe that this one will be any less successful than the first five.
“I can’t think of anything more fun than eating,” said Ken Mueller, ODC’s public relations and development manager. “(The Food Truck Fest is) just a very exciting time. Once you get there, the vibe is so cool that you’re going to want to hang out. People are coming and checking out foods maybe

Oswinkle was born and raised in Baltimore and received his master’s degree in guitar performance and pedagogy from the Conservatory of the Peabody Institute at Johns Hopkins University. While there, he was selected to represent his studio in Peabody’s Friday Noon concert series and had many masterclasses
with renowned guitarists such as Andrew Zohn, Allan Neave, and Sergio Assad. After his first year of study at Peabody, Oswinkle began participating in competitions throughout the region and setting up his own concerts locally. In 2019, he placed third in the Philadelphia Classical Guitar Competition and placed as a semifinalist in his first-ever appearance in the Appalachian GuitarFest Solo Guitar Competition. Since then, he has continued competing, receiving second place at the 2022 Southern Guitar Competition and advancing to the semifinals in many other competitions.
Since graduating, Oswinkle has been a teacher and regular performer in the Baltimore and Washington, D.C., areas. He continues to study with prominent guitarists and attend festivals and competitions. He also brings music into the local community by playing for local events, schools, and nontraditional venues.
Admission is free. For more information, call the church office at 717-397-5149.

Every year, art teachers in school districts such as Conestoga Valley, Warwick, Penn Manor, Solanco and many others partner with Mulberry Art Studios to incorporate the We Love Our Pets show in their curriculum. Students are able to submit artwork made in class for a chance to be featured in the exhibit.
Three artists received awards for pieces entered in the show: the youth People’s Choice award was given to Jinx Canfield of Ephrata for the painting “Eloise,” Violet van der Meij of Lancaster earned Best in Show in the youth category for her piece “Space Aussie,” and Jen van der Meij of Lancaster received the Best in Show and People’s Choice awards for her paintings “Colonel Sanders” and “Jessie,” respectively.
“I enjoy sculpture and drawing but I didn’t have the patience to work with acrylic on canvas when I was younger, so I’m not as experienced with it yet,” said 16-year-old Canfield.
who used acrylic paint to make “Eloise.” “Eloise, the pup, developed some recent health issues limiting her time here with us, so this is going to end up as a sort of memorial and remembrance piece.”
Violet, who is Jen’s 11-year-old daughter, said she decided to paint an Australian Shepherd as it is her favorite breed. “I enjoy all mediums of art, but I went with watercolor and ink because it was a progression from some of the pieces I submitted last year,” Violet added. “I allowed myself to use more imagination this year by putting my Aussie into a space environment.”
“I enjoyed watching Violet be more comfortable
with exploring this year, and I love how her pieces turned out,” Jen said.
“She’s a talented young lady, and I loved sharing this experience with her.”
Jen’s paintings incorporated gold leaf, a technique that she had never experimented with before.
“Jessie” depicts Jen’s childhood pet donkey, and “Colonel Sanders” portrays a cat owned by Jen’s close friends. “For ‘Jessie,’ I wanted my love of donkeys to be represented with an over-the-top background, flooding the entire piece with gold leaf before painting over it with acrylic,” Jen said. “For ‘Colonel Sanders,’ I used gold leaf as a much more subtle accent, but I exaggerated

Veritas Community posts sermon series
The Veritas Community will launch a new sermon series titled “????” on Sunday, June 2. The congregation gathers every Sunday at 10:30 a.m. on the second floor of HUB 450, 450 N. Prince St. Lancaster. The event begins with 15 minutes of fellowship time.
In the Bible’s accounts of Jesus’ three-year earthly ministry, Jesus asked 307 questions, was asked 183, and only directly answered three of the questions he was asked. In preparation for the sermon series, leaders at the Veritas Community polled their congregation to find out what questions attendees wanted to explore.
The questions will include “If someone lives a good life full of love, grace, and kingdom values, but has never heard of Jesus, what happens to them when they die?” based on Romans 2:12-16 on June 2; “What does it mean in today’s political climate and world situation to, according to Psalm 122:6, “Pray for the peace of Jerusalem?’” based on Psalm 122:6-9 and Joshua 5:13-15 on June 9; and “Tongues: What are they?” based on Acts 2:1-4 and 1 Corinthians 14:1-25 on June 16.
On June 23 and 30, the sermons will focus on atonement theories. The first week will feature
the following topics and Scriptures: penal substitutionary atonement theory, Romans 3:21-26; ransom atonement theory, Matthew 20:20-28; and moral influence atonement theory, 1 Peter 2:22. The second week will feature the following topics and Scriptures: Christus victor, Colossians 1:13-14 and 2:13-15; satisfaction atonement theory, Hebrews 9:22; and scapegoat atonement theory, Acts 2:22-36.

UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of Pennsylvania has provided a $180,000 investment to the United Disabilities Services Foundation (UDSF) to support aging and disability services for adults across the state. UDSF is committed to creating a world where everyone can live their best lives. The nonprofit offers programs and resources to support people who are living with disabilities, aging, or recovering from an injury.
The investment from UnitedHealthcare will build capacity for programs and services offered by UDSF.
Among these programs is the Resource Center, a centralized location where individuals can receive assistance from per -
son-centered counselors to access available resources, including life planning and support, personal care and independence services, and enrichment and life skills. The service dog program will also benefit. UDSF service dogs are trained for over two years by dedicated volunteers and professionals. The dogs then support people who have a mobility disability, autism, or post-traumatic stress disorder.
UDSF also supports the Challenger Football and Cheerleading League, which provides opportunities for people ages 8 to 21 with disabilities to exercise and have fun. The league allows every player to participate to his or her level of ability.
