Waystock will return to Landisville
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDWayside Presbyterian Church, 600 Stony Battery Road, Landisville, will hold the 12th annual Waystock community music fest from noon to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 8. The free event will include performances from various local artists and family-friendly activities, and it will benefit the Hempfield Area Food Pantry.
The celebration will take place on the lawn of Wayside’s property, and attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets for seating. Picnic-style seating will be available under the church’s outdoor pavilion, and activities will occur inside in the event of rain.
United Methodist Church Praise Band will kick off the show at 12:30 p.m., followed by bluegrass outfit Dolores Creek at 1:40 p.m.
Grace Notes will play an arrangement of songs at 2:50 p.m. to close out the concert.
“Wayside participates in global, national and regional missions.”
A kids’ block party will begin at noon, featuring games and activities such as an inflatable obstacle course, a station for balloon crafts and a small silent auction for Lego sets and retail gift cards. Free food and drinks will be offered while supplies last, including Wawa soft pretzels, Hershey’s Ice Cream, snow cones and popcorn.
Three local bands will perform, including Wayside’s praise band, Grace Notes. The Glossbrenner
The Pet Pantry of Lancaster County will operate a table with a prize wheel and share information on its services. Cylo, the Stormers’ mascot, will make an appearance at 1 p.m.
Wayside staff members Sonja
Eckert, Rachel Holsey and Michelle Hess will be present to offer insight on the church’s upcoming youth programs and summer activities, including various pop-up events and a vacation Bible school that will take place from Friday, July 12, to Sunday, July 14.
Although there will be no admission fee to Waystock, guests may bring nonperishable canned
goods or a cash donation to support the Hempfield Area Food Pantry. Attendees who bring five or more nonperishable items will be eligible to participate in a prize drawing for a $50 gas card.
The annual Waystock tradition was started by Chris Rowles, a founding member of Grace Notes. Rowles organized an evening concert in the yard of the church that featured several
local praise bands, and church leadership decided to use the event as a way to benefit the Hempfield Area Food Pantry. The concert has continued to benefit the food pantry every year, and Wayside has raised thousands of dollars for the organization since hosting the first Waystock. “From the beginning, we chose a local mission to support. BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDAcorn Acres Wildlife Rehabilitation, located in Millersville, is about to make history. In May, Acorn Acres’ founder and executive director, Betsy Shank, announced a new campaign to secure funding for a major expansion. In addition to enhancing Acorn Acres’ level of care and capacity for animals, the project will make the organization Lancaster County’s first commercial wildlife facility.
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDUnited Disabilities Services (UDS), 2270 Erin Court, Lancaster, will host an open house from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 13. The event will offer members of the public an opportunity to learn about the organization’s service dog program and
talk about the program and offer a look behind the scenes, but also to make some new friends,” said UDS service dogs manager Lori Breece. “Not everyone can afford a sponsorship, but we could use (donations of) dog food.”
During the open house, UDS will share information on sponsorships and other ways people can support the service dog program. The event will include various demonstrations from dogs and clients, and staff members and volunteers will be
Homestead opens for season
The Herr Family Homestead, located in Amos Herr Park at 1756 Nissley Road, Landisville, will offer guided tours of the home and barn every second and fourth Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m. through October. The last tour will begin at 3:15 p.m. There is no admission charge, but donations will be accepted.
Visitors may view three hooked rugs that were made by Alice Herr Zander in Lancaster County in the late 19th or early 20th century. The rugs were donated to the Herr Homestead in memory of Zander’s great-grandson Robert Christian Pfahl Jr. and his family.
Zander created more than 2,000 hooked rugs over 72 years and
attributed her zest for living to her interest in rug making. The rugs on display at the Herr house are unusual, as they have geometric designs rather than Zander’s typical flower and leaf patterns.
Zander’s rugs were previously part of a 2007 exhibition titled “Rags to Rugs: Hooked and Handsewn Rugs of Pennsylvania,” which resulted from research that the Heritage Center of Lancaster County conducted from 2004 to 2006. Information about the rugs is available in the exhibition catalog written by Patricia T. Herr, who also published a book titled “Rags to Rugs” in 2008.

addition to raising donations for Hempfield Area Food Pantry, members of Wayside’s congregation frequently volunteer to bag food items, serve meals and provide music at monthly community dinners. For more information, visit www.waysidepc.org.

Building character through bicycling
BY CATHY MOLITORISOver the past decade, Lee DeRemer has watched great things happen with Lifecycles. The nonprofit Christ-centered mentoring program aims to build young people of character through bicycling.
“This program appeals to a wide range of young people with different gifts and skills, but it seems to really attract teen boys and girls who haven’t found their way in a team sport or another program in school,” he said. “For many kids, this is the first thing that clicks, and that’s very rewarding.”
Lee and his wife, Marcie, started Lifecycles with a mission of supporting youths in the community.
“This program always has been and still is 100% free for the boys and girls who participate,” Lee said, noting that bikes, helmets and other safety gear are all provided if needed, along with a free hot meal every time the group gets together for a ride.
“This year, we’ve got 139 boys and girls regis -
tered, and 38 of those are first-time participants,” he shared. “The bulk of our participants are from Lancaster County, but we have folks from York, Lebanon, Dauphin and Perry counties, too.” The program is open to youths ages 12 to 18, and Lifecycles teams are split into boys’ and girls’ groups. Boys’ and girls’ teams ride from Riverfront Park, 551 Vinegar Ferry Road, Marietta, on Tuesdays at 5:45 p.m., and boys’ and girls’ teams also ride from Amos Herr Park, 1700 Nissley Road, Landisville, at 5:45 p.m. on Thursdays.
In addition to the groups enjoying rides around the countryside of Lancaster County, some of the more seasoned participants are training for longer, challenging rides taking place this summer. A girls’ team will ride a six-day, 230-mile route along the coast of Lake Michigan, finishing at Mackinac Island. Boys’ teams will ride a six-day, 320-mile route from Pittsburgh to Washington, D.C., on the Great Allegheny Passage/C&O Canal trail; a six-day, 290-mile route to
Niagara Falls; and an eightday, 350-mile route from northern Pennsylvania through the Adirondack Mountains. A boys’ team will also take a 13-day, 430-mile ride in Colorado, finishing with a summit of Mount Blue Sky on North America’s highest paved road at 14,271 feet.
“It’s going to be a very fun summer,” Lee said. “We are also rolling out an internally developed bicycling skills curriculum. We’ve spent six months writing our own curriculum, and this will help us provide more structure to the cycling skills we teach.”
Teams will ride locally during the week through the end of August, and
Lifecycles will continue with rides on two Saturdays in both September and October.
Although the season has already started, youths can join the program at any point. Volunteers are also welcome at any time, Lee said.
He noted that as Lifecycles celebrates 10 years of serving youths, he continues to appreciate the impact the program has on its participants.
“It’s common for a lot of teens to feel unseen in their school environment,” he said. “They are flourishing in Lifecycles.”

Ware Center plans First Friday events
The Arts at Millersville University will join Lancaster city’s First Friday celebrations with We the People First Friday on June 7 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster.
At 6:30 p.m. in Steinman Hall, Speak to My Soul and A Concrete Rose will present the fourth annual “Live From the Red Rose” show. Featuring a blend of dance, spoken word, and music, the show
will include performances by local artists Tieshay Cheryl, Kati La Drámati, and Shellyifyanasty, and the poet laureate of Lancaster city, Evita Colon. Local youth musicians Jaymeir and Ceevon Dixon, the Unstoppables Drill Team, and others will open the show.
In the Regitz Gallery from 6 to 8 p.m., a reception will celebrate the opening of “Expanded Visions,” a juried photography exhi -
bition that has kicked off the Lancaster Summer Arts Festival since the 1980s. This show celebrates the diverse, creative works of photographers in central Pennsylvania and embraces all aspects of photography, from analog to digital and
from representational to abstract. “Expanded Visions” will be on display through Friday, July 26. The Regitz Gallery is open on Mondays through Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free, and no tickets are required.
Acorn Acres from
Acorn Acres’ expansion will include an additional facility that will be equipped with advanced diagnostic tools such as fluoroscopy and X-ray machines, as well as an on-site laboratory. The new facility, which is approximately 2,000 square feet, was formerly used as a veterinary office building, and it will allow Acorn Acres to bring in more volunteers, more animals and members of the public who wish to take a look at the many ways it serves the community.
Shank said she initially spoke with Ryan and Ashley Tuma, the owners of the new facility, roughly

present to answer guests’ questions.
Since 2017, UDS has expanded its service area to assist clients within five hours of Lancaster County, including individuals from Delaware, New York City, Maryland, Pittsburgh and Washington, D.C. “If someone is within five hours of us, we can help them - no matter what state they live in,” Breece said.
In addition to extending its coverage area beyond Lancaster, UDS has continued to partner with schools throughout the county to place support dogs in every school district from Warwick to Solanco. Breece said the organization recently began talks with the School District of Lancaster to bring dogs to schools in the heart of the county. “We’re discovering that these districts now want a dog in every building,” added Breece. “It’s a domino effect; from the moment kids are greeted by a dog when they get off the bus, their anxiety levels have been reduced. It’s a beautiful waterfall effect that goes through the whole school, and we couldn’t be more proud of it.”
The primary goal of UDS’ open house is to bring in supporters to help with the long-term financial sustainability of the service dog program. When training service dogs, UDS invests $25,000 to $30,000 per pup over the course of a 22-month process. Clients who receive dogs are
one year ago about using the space for Acorn Acres. After discussing the potential expansion while Shank was teaching in North Carolina, Ashley suggested the two women meet in person on Feb. 28, unaware that it was the one-year anniversary of the passing of Acorn Acres’ late mascot, Poppy the groundhog. “I said, ‘I hear you, Poppy. I’ll go,” added Shank. Once the details were squared away, Shank officially partnered with Ryan and Ashley to rent the new space and launch the Capacity Campaign. “I’ve had to turn away animals from Acorn Acres
every year because we literally run out of room,” Shank said. “This new facility will allow us to take a higher number of animals, welcome additional volunteers and bring in additional species.” Currently, Acorn Acres specializes in rehabilitating squirrels, rabbits and woodchucks; the expansion will enable the organization to extend its care to bats and Pennsylvania’s only native marsupial, the Virginia opossum.
Once the new facility is officially up and running, Shank plans to offer tours to members of the public. Due to regulations, wildlife centers are not able to
exhibit animals in rehabilitation to prevent them from growing accustomed to human contact. The examination rooms in the new building are equipped with one-sided windows, which will allow guests to see the animals while avoiding direct contact.
Acorn Acres’ primary goal is now to secure funding for the move into the facility and its continued operation. To make a donation online, visit https:// tinyurl.com/AcornAcres Expansion. For more information or to view other donations options, visit www.acornacreswr.com/ capacity_campaign.
only charged $5,000 of the total cost. “We’re always in the red, but it’s important to be good financial stewards as we try to help the community,” said Breece. “I’d love to see a dog in every school, and I believe we’re on our way. It’s the power of a wet nose and a wagging tail.”
For more information, visit https://udservices .org/service-dogs -open-house.
UDS invites the public to learn about the value of having service dogs in local schools and communities during its open house.
