ABC Keystone Apprenticeship & Training Trust (KATT) recently announced that a record-breaking total of 108 apprentices have graduated in seven trades, including carpentry, construction craft laborer, electrical, heavy equipment operator, HVAC, plumbing and sheet metal. The ceremony took place on May 20 at the Lancaster Barnstormers’ stadium in Lancaster.

The ABC KATT manages and operates nine Pennsylvania-registered apprenticeship programs sponsored by Associated Builders & Contractors, Keystone Chapter. ABC Keystone’s apprenticeship program began in 1968, and this year’s 108 graduates represent the highest number of apprentices receiving completion certificates since the first class graduated in 1972.

The following local apprentices achieved the High Achiever Award for earning the highest grade point average in their trades: Christopher W. Chant of Lancaster, Carpentry, High Construction Company, Lancaster; Justin D. Culp of Lebanon, Electrical, The Farfield Company, Lititz; Phillip C. Gregg of Columbia, Sheet Metal, James Craft & Son Inc., York Haven; and Chad D. Weitzel of Conestoga, Heavy Equipment Operator, Flyway Excavating Inc., Mount Joy.

The graduating apprentices earned a certificate of completion from ABC KATT celebrating classroom and hands-on training. Those that completed their on-the-job training hours also receive Journeyperson certificates from the Pennsylvania Department of Labor & Industry.

Apprenticeship, with its combination of classroom training and on-the-job experience, provides upcoming craft professionals opportunities to develop skills for careers in the construction industry. More information can be found at www.abckeystonecenter.org.

Durrett Receives Democratic Committee Scholarship

The Hempfield Area Democratic Committee has named Miles Durrett of Landisville as the recipient of its ninth annual Paul and Jan Wright Senior Scholarship. The award, given to a graduating high school senior in the Hempfield School District, recognizes a student who the committee believes best represents the next generation of Democratic leaders.

Miles is the son of Rebecca and Dominic Durrett of Landisville. He is a student at Lancaster Catholic High School, where he is involved in varsity tennis and crosscountry and has served as a captain of both teams. He is a member of Student Council, National Honor Society, and Spanish National Honor Society.

In addition, Miles is an active member of the community and spends time volunteering with his church, the Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish in Lancaster. He recently won an ROTC scholarship and plans to attend the University of Pittsburgh. Following college, he plans to attend law school with the goal of becoming an attorney.

Miles will receive $500 to put toward college expenses. He and his parents were scheduled to be recognized at a meeting of the Hempfield Area Democratic Committee.

The scholarship is named for Paul and Jan Wright, two longtime, active Hempfield Area Democratic Committee members and residents of East Hempfield Township.

Emma Hasting, president of Dayspring Christian Academy’s chapter of the National Honor Society (NHS), displayed some of the socks that were donated in a recent supply drive that enabled the NHS students to make over 40 care packages for people who are homeless.

Members of the Dayspring Christian Academy chapter of the National Honor Society (NHS) recently held a supply drive at the school to benefit those who are homeless by providing care packages. Students partnered with Water Street Mission and City Gate Lancaster in addition to personally handing out the care packages in Lancaster.

NHS members chose this project because they had observed homeless people asking for help in the local area, and some NHS members know people who work at Water Street Mission, said NHS president Emma Hasting, a senior.

During the supply drive, members of the Dayspring community donated hundreds of common household goods and personal care items, such as soap, toothpaste, socks, and hand sanitizer, as well as packaged food items. NHS members were able to share over 40 care packages with people in need in addition to donating boxes of supplies to the organizations for their distribution.

Water Street Mission, located in the city of Lancaster, provides people experiencing poverty and homelessness with not only a place to stay, but also with tools that equip them to keep growing as individuals. City Gate, also located in Lancaster, trains others in how to serve and provides people in need with key necessities for life.

The program will center on Brazil’s Pantanal, the world’s largest inland wetland, which is home to a breathtaking array of wildlife. This wildlife includes a large variety of wetland birds and endangered species such as hyacinth macaw, giant anteater, giant river otter, and jaguar.

The program will be recorded and available to all registrants, including those unable to attend the live presentation. Registration is required in advance by visiting www.lancasterbirdclub.org and looking under the Events tab.
