Siloam Ethiopia will host a fundraising meal from noon to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 15, at Ethiopian Evangelical Church, 175 Church St., Landisville. Members of the nonprofit organization will serve various traditional Ethiopian meals for a set price, and patrons may choose from four dishes: doro wat, a spicy chicken stew; misir wat, containing spiced red lentils; atakilt wat, a cabbage and potato stew; and kik alicha, a stew with split peas. Each meal will include injera, an Ethiopian flatbread. To reserve a meal for pickup, contact Siloam Ethiopia founder Wegayhu Ketema at
717-669-0930 or wmketema@ gmail.com. Orders may be placed until the day of the fundraiser.
The proceeds from the fundraiser will benefit Siloam Ethiopia’s ongoing efforts to aid the people of Harar in Ethiopia, where the organization operates a medical clinic. For the last nine years, volunteers from Siloam Ethiopia and local churches have taken regular mission trips to assist residents of Harar by providing medical services at the clinic and completing projects at local orphanages. The funds raised by Siloam Ethiopia’s com munity meal help cover the clin ic’s general expenses, including rent and utility expenses for the facility and staff member wages.
The proceeds are also used to purchase medications and eyeglasses for the clinic’s patients. Residents of Harar often experience shortages of medical supplies due to the local government’s tendency to confiscate any shipments that arrive.
Siloam Ethiopia’s volunteers took their most recent trip to Harar in January 2023. The group comprised Ketema and Community Fellowship Church members Kari Oftedal, Jason Craig, Faith Higley and Patrick Engle. In addition to providing volunteers for mission trips, Community Fellowship Church has been financially supporting Siloam Ethiopia’s projects in Harar for the last four years.
On June 9, the Lancaster County Art Association (LCAA), 149 Precision Ave., Strasburg, opened its summer membership art show. The exhibit features a variety of artworks by the organization’s members, and it will remain on display in the LCAA’s
Kauffman Gallery until Thursday, July 11.
Each of LCAA’s membership shows incorporate multiple new themes each year, and featured artists submit their work in the professional or non-professional categories. Each entrant is eligible to receive one award per show, and the award recipients
Since its inception, the Welsh Mountain Health Center (now Union Community Care), 584 Springville Road, New Holland, has sought to reach members of the community with needed health care.
Starting in April, the new Union Community Care Mobile Care Team is continuing toward that goal by bringing health care literally to the doorsteps of members of the Plain community from East Earl and Morgantown to Quarryville to Mount Joy. The team, made up
of medical provider Janine Muir and medical assistant Heather Parmer, journeys out each Wednesday to homes in specific areas based on a list of requests Parmer has compiled. A circuit of visits is completed every eight weeks. In addition to the aforementioned locations, the unit visits homes in Ephrata, Lititz, Terre Hill, New Holland, Coatesville, Honey Brook, Narvon, Parkesburg, Gap, and Kinzers. Muir noted that Union has responded to the fact that transportation is a known barrier to care and that while telehealth can help, mobile units bring
providers directly to those in need. “I think our administration has amazing idea generators, but it’s also listening to the community,” she pointed out, adding that providing mobile care enhances the Plain Healthy program that was already in place.
“The Mobile Care Team is working to implement the Plain Healthy program, that serves the Plain population in Lancaster County,” said Muir, noting that the program includes administering vaccines and performing well child checks, as well as making house calls.
According to Parmer, members of the Plain community contact her through a special number. Parmer coordinates the best time for a visit and the amount of time necessary to provide services before setting an appointment. “I plot on a map and calculate how long it will take to get there, and I call and tell them what time we will be there at their house,” she explained.
Looking ahead, Muir
hopes to see the unit taking part in area gatherings. “We have these community events coming,” said Muir, who noted that at a fair or festival, the team may focus on lead testing, blood pressure checks, or glucose testing.
Nicole Specht, Union Community Care’s chief communications officer, noted that putting the unit on the road is just the beginning. “The way we are mobilizing health care is going to evolve,” she stated, adding that mapping out the locations of those in need and listening to community members will spearhead the next steps. “(We plan on) having the freedom and flexibility to meet folks where they are (and provide care) with people they trust,” she said. While the mobile unit puts medical services on wheels, the feel for a patient entering the customized van is not unlike that of walking into a medical exam room. “It pretty much has everything we would need to be able to provide care,” said Muir of

Oftedal, who works as a doctor at Lancaster General Health, spent the majority of her time in Harar seeing nearly 40 patients daily at the free medical clinic. Ketema and the other volunteers helped to refurbish the storage room at a local girls’ orphanage, and they taught the girls how to fashion reusable sanitary pads to replace disposable pads, which are often too expensive for many of the girls to afford.
While working at the orphanage during the last trip, Ketema became ill due to the mold that had accumulated in the storage room. After several months of treatment,
Ketema has fully recovered, but she was unable to take another trip in 2023. Ketema said she plans to visit Harar in September with her husband, Demeke Getahun, to continue Siloam Ethiopia’s work. Ketema invites members of the community and local doctors who wish to volunteer in Harar to contact her via phone or email for more information. “Inflation is bad in Harar, so we have to pay more to staff the clinic and meet the needs of children there. We will welcome anyone who wants to help,” said Ketema.

the unit, which includes a chair, an exam table, a sink, and the instruments and medicine necessary for the services the team plans to provide that day. There is also a television for education purposes or a virtual connection if necessary.
Muir noted that the mobile unit represents a new concept in health care by expanding the original
vision of the clinic. “The idea of reaching under-resourced people has not changed,” she said. “It’s just taking that mission and making it bigger.”

The Lancaster Lemonade Concert Series (LLCS) is cool, it’s refreshing, it’s delightfully delicious - not unlike the summertime drink bearing its name and served at the end of each performance.
The Lancaster Lemonade Concert Series is back, as big and entertaining as ever.
Quite frankly, it’s a great way to spend warm Thursday evenings in Manheim Township.
“It’s held in a church setting, and the air conditioning makes it a cool atmosphere,” said LLCS board member Kathy Seaber. “People are talking, but they’re very attentive during the performance. It’s every informal. It’s very relaxed. People come casual. It’s very charming. It’s a fun evening.”
Conducted at Highland Presbyterian Church, 500 E. Roseville Road, Lancaster, LLCS is a series of eight concerts given mostly by local musicians and bands on Thursdays at 7 p.m. The popular summer series will kick off on June 13 with Auscultation Brass and will conclude on Aug. 8 with a performance by Lancaster Marimba Ensemble.
There will be no show on July 4.
The performances, which are typically 90 minutes in length, are free to attend, and good will offerings are received during the intermission of each one.
“The musicians enjoy performing; that’s why they want to come back the next year,” said Seaber. “I think it’s that homey atmosphere. The performers know that people appreciate their talent. That has to make you feel good as a performer. What performer doesn’t appreciate applause?”
This year’s LLCS will also feature Celtic Americana band Rizzetta’s Tones on
June 20, Shaun and Kayla Ressler accompanied by A. Scott Williams on June 27, John Darrenkamp & Friends on July 11, “I Got You Babe: Let’s Duet” featuring Reji Woods on July 18, the New Holland Band on July 25 and the Lancaster British Brass Band on Aug. 1.
“Some of the bands have quite the following,” said Seaber. “People know about our concerts in the summer on Thursdays. It’s kind of
established; it’s familiar and regular. Each show is a variety of songs, maybe even something you don’t know. The audiences like when the performers talk to them. That makes it personal and familiar. But all of the performers are good in their own way.”
While the variety of LLCS’ music is wide and familiar, the series places an emphasis on patriotic music, including

marches, Broadway show tunes, operatic music, Irish songs, movie and television show themes and popular music. Typically, between 200 and 400 people attend the concerts.
“The median age of the audience is probably 60 or older, but we do get some families,” said Seaber. “It gives people something to do in the summer.”
This season will mark LLCS’ 51st series of concerts. LLCS can trace its origins to the early 1970s and the Lancaster Opera Company Associates.
“It continues a tradition of supporting local talent and providing entertainment in the summertime that appeals to a wide audience,” said Seaber. “We’re still here. We’re sponsoring another season, and it’s going to be a good season. Finding the groups, calling the groups and organizing is hard work in January, February and March, but then it kind of runs itself.”

are selected by a panel of judges comprising professional artists such as gallery owners, art professors and accomplished painters.
A new panel of judges is selected for each show.
A second exhibit titled
“The Four Seasons” is currently on display in the Steinmetz Gallery. The show was opened to any local artist above the age of 15, and submissions include drawings, paintings, photography, fine crafts and many other mediums. Each entry focuses on a fall, spring, summer or winter theme, and the exhibit will remain open until July 11.
“We like to choose a theme that incorporates a broad subject matter to allow a wide range of interpretations by artists,” said Patricia Keller of Landisville, a member of LCAA and exhibit coordinator. Although LCAA is based in Strasburg, its members hail from communities across Lancaster County.
“The Four Seasons” exhibit doubles as a fundraiser for LCAA. Each highlighted artist donated his or her work to be featured in the show, and the proceeds of art sales will support LCAA’s many programs and community art events.
For the second year, LCAA will hold the Summer
Sketchbook Challenge, which is open to both members and nonmembers. Participants will receive a sketchbook to populate with drawings throughout the summer, and the completed books will be displayed in a judged exhibit at the end of the season. Awards will be given out in multiple professional and non-professional categories.
LCAA will host artist Dan Graziano for a painting workshop from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, June 14 and 15. Graziano will explore various painting techniques and discuss various creative approaches for making art. For more information on LCAA’s upcoming exhibits and classes, visit www.lcaa online.org.

UDS Foundation (UDSF), a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of older adults and individuals living with disabilities, has been selected as a grant recipient by the Lancaster County Commu-
nity Foundation (LCCF).
The grant, totaling $25,000, was awarded during the Well-Being & Vibrancy Event held at Buchanan Park on April 20.
The funds will support UDSF’s CAPABLE Program. Spearheaded by Shauna Buchmoyer and Marie Olmand, the program aims to empower individuals and enhance their well-being through a variety of services and support systems. With the funding provided by LCCF, UDSF will be able to further its mission to increase mobility, functionality, and capacity so that older adults can age in their
and evidence-based, trauma-informed mentoring practices. Since its launch, the organization has served more than 900 students, and it recently completed its first Women’s Strength and Fitness Center to further expand its positive impact on at-risk young women in the community. homes and communities. The LCCF, celebrating 100 years of impact, launched the Shaping Tomorrow Awards to inspire innovative projects that will continue to benefit the community for the next century. Through this initiative, LCCF invested more than $1 million in Lancaster County, with a focus on four broad categories: creative expression, well-being and vibrancy, our planet, and next generation. UDSF was selected as a recipient of a well-being and vibrancy grant.
