Historical society sets interactive Civil War encampment
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDThe East Petersburg Historical Society (EPHS) will host a Civil War encampment from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, June 22, at the Daniel Wolf Museum, 1905 State St., East Petersburg. The free community event will offer members of the public an opportunity to learn about history from re-enactors in full period-accurate attire, including uniforms, as they showcase a traditional camp layout used during the Civil War.
11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.

Between demonstrations, those portraying soldiers will be stationed throughout the camp to answer guests’ questions and to explain the intricacies of the life of a Civil War soldier. The encampment will highlight battlefield medical practices and cooking demonstrations of meals commonly consumed at the time of the conflict.
“We call the event we put together living history. There’s no fighting; basically, we set up camp, and anyone can come and learn about the group, the war and how the soldiers were back then,” said Daina Stanley, a
member of the 71st Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Regiment California.
Refreshments and memorabilia will be available to purchase throughout the day; proceeds will benefit EPHS. “Everyone is
welcome to attend an exciting glimpse of the living history,” EPHS president Samuel Maurer IV said. “We are featuring Civil War-era soldiers, food and dress for historical curiosities and fun for the whole family.”
Since 1976, EPHS has striven to preserve East Petersburg’s rich history by maintaining a display of significant artifacts and curios, which are accompanied by a wealth of information for visitors of the Daniel Wolf

BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDIn the ever-changing world of social media and the online landscape, new trends often take the country - and even the whole world - by storm. Nearly every American will groan at the mention of formerly ubiquitous internet trends such as the “cinnamon challenge,” which encouraged thousands of people to try swallowing an entire spoonful
of the potent spice without coughing. As always, the general public gradually loses interest in these trends to make room for whatever hot topic will take its place. Most online trends are relatively harmless, but some of them, including the budding fad of rock and cliff diving, pose a serious risk to people who engage in them without taking the necessary precautions. In recent weeks, various social
Giant announces Healing the Planet grant program
The Giant Company in partnership with Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful recently announced the return of its Healing the Planet grant program. This year, $100,000 will be awarded to tax-exempt organizations for tree plantings across Giant’s operating areas in Pennsylvania. Eligible projects must be shovel ready and include tree planting and direct costs relating to tree planting.
The 2024 Healing the Planet grant program will accept applications through Monday, July 1, at www.keeppabeautiful. org. Eligible expenses include trees native to Pennsylvania, equipment, tree signage, tools, and supplies. Preference will be given to applications that aim to plant the highest number of trees. Awardees will be announced in August.
This is the fourth year that the Giant Company has partnered with Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful to offer Healing the Planet grants. In the past three years, more than $1.1 million has been awarded to 110 recipients for projects that

media platforms have seen an increase of content depicting thrill seekers who enjoy plunging from the top of steep cliffs into rivers and other bodies of water. The precarious pastime has been safely practiced by trained professionals and extreme sportsmen for years, but the abrupt and widespread interest among teenagers and young adults has prompted many local school districts to issue a warning to Lancaster County residents interested in trying it out themselves. Due to the county’s proximity to the Susquehanna River, which is easily accessible to areas such as Pequea, Washington Boro, Holtwood and Columbia,
have made an effort to discourage attempts to practice cliff jumping in the area.
Recently, some school administrators sent an email to students and their parents to highlight a few specific concerns, asserting “there is nothing remotely safe about cliff jumping or diving into the Susquehanna River.” Due to the presence of a hydroelectric dam in Safe Harbor, the river has an unpredictable variation in depth that poses a threat to any diver, and many submerged objects are not visible from high above the surface.
Additionally, many people believe jumping into water is entirely safe because of the cushion the water provides. According to the National Library of Medicine’s (NLM) website, most cliff diving related injuries are associated with the water entry, and divers’ entry position plays a key role in how severely an individual can be injured. During a study conducted in 2013, NLM determined foot and ankle injuries as the most common result of cliff diving, and more than 50% of injured divers entered the water feet first.
While you’re brainstorming fun activities to try out this summer, it may be wise to heed medical professionals’ warning and remember that the Susquehanna River isn’t known for its diving-friendly landscape - no matter how exciting the activity may seem online.

Rotary Club posts Wheels & Wings Festival and 5K
The Rotary Club of Lancaster will hold its seventh annual Wheels & Wings Festival and 5K on Saturday, June 22, rain or shine at the Lancaster Airport, located on Airport Road in Lititz. The event is the Rotary Club of Lancaster’s main annual fundraiser, and proceeds will benefit the Summer Youth Experience grants.
Funded in partnership with the United Way of Lancaster, Wheels & Wings supports nonprofits that serve more than 2,600 city youths ages 5 to 16. The four programs that will benefit this year are Scaling Walls a Note at a Time (SWAN) music programs, Advantage Lancaster mentoring programs, Brightside Opportunity STEM programs, and The Mix Summer STEM and Ecology Camp. Representatives for each of these programs will be on-site at Wheels & Wings and will select a People’s Choice award winner in the car show.
The event will begin with the 5K race, sponsored by Penn State Health, at 7:30 a.m. rain or shine. The lightly traveled race route is entirely on the roads of the 5K host sponsor, Brethren Village. Medals will be awarded for the top three male and female finishers in six age categories with registered participants receiving a race T-shirt.
A Pre-Show Coffee Cruise will depart at 7:30 a.m., offering a self-guided cruise designed by Michael Rowen of Michael’s Motor Cars.
The “everything on wheels” car show, open to cars, motorcycles, and trucks, and sponsored
by Boyd Wilson, will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Trophies will be awarded, as well as numerous door prizes.
Due to runway construction, there will not be a fly-in this year, but there will still be helicopter rides and, new to the festival, tethered hot air balloon rides. Abella Aviation will provide the helicopter rides, and Susquehanna Valley Balloon Company will provide the hot air balloon rides; these activities will have a fee. All rides will be purchased day-of and are subject to the weather.
A special feature will be a Huey helicopter from the Vietnam War, presented by and for veterans of that conflict. Liberty Warbirds will provide a free static display of a Huey 823.
The Wheels & Wings Festival will also feature food trucks, Big Dog Craft Brewing, music by Baker Event Company, and giveaway drawings.
For kids, there will be an inflatable bounce house and slide, as well as a Toucha-Truck. Children may sit in and play on Skippy, the airport’s static plane.
The event is free, and no registration is required for spectators. There is a fee for on-site parking.
To register for the 5K, car show, or cruise, search for “Rotary Club of Lancaster Wheels and Wings Festival & 5K” at www.event brite.com.

LCC members and motorheads from all parts of Lancaster County are invited to participate in the event after making a suggested donation, and no preregistration will be required. Dash plaques will be offered to the first 200 attendees to register a vehicle.
Refreshments will be available to purchase from several food trucks, and live music will be provided by DJ Jeff Primaldi. The car show will also feature various door prizes that will include items donated by local businesses. Members of the Willow Street Fire Company will hold additional prize drawings throughout the day.
Guests are encouraged to bring a nonperishable food item to the event to benefit Willow Street Church’s food pantry. Every year, LCC donates a portion of funds raised by the car show to Solanco Neighborhood Ministries in Quarryville to help sustain its many community services programs and food bank.

the club, which is open to members of the public who are interested in joining, whether they own a vehicle or not. The club will offer interested attendees more information on its regular meeting times and location.
“We like to look at cars people have fixed up and are proud of,” said LCC president Don Teeter. “We’re not into taking points away if there’s a speck of mud on the rim or a tire that doesn’t match; it gives the little guy a chance.”
This year, the car show will be held in memory of former LCC vice president and event organizer Jack Parke, who died in March 2024. In addition to the traditional trophies given to vehicle owners every year, Parke’s partner, Carol Farmer, will select the recipient of the first Jack Parke Memorial Trophy.

BIA announces Parade of Homes
The Building Industry Association of Lancaster County (BIA) has announced the annual virtual and in-person Parade of Homes. The event opened on June 15 and will continue on Wednesday, June 19, through Sunday, June 23. Tour hours are weekdays from 5 to 8 p.m. and weekends from noon to 6 p.m.
Sponsored by Fulton Bank and UGI Utilities and presented by BIA, the Lancaster/Lebanon Parade of Homes is a free public event that opens new homes for in-person and virtual tours. This year’s parade features 22 single-family homes, duplexes and remodeling projects from 13 different builders, ranging in price from $499,999 to over $1 million. Participants may visit 19 of the 22 homes in person and/or all the homes virtually utilizing 3D technology, providing a room-by-room view of each home’s innovative designs and details.
Detailed information on all of the home entries is available at www.lancaster paradeofhomes.com.
The ParadeSmart app is an additional feature that provides home details, directions and customizable routes. After downloading the app from their app store, users should select the BIA Parade of Homes. The Parade of Homes Guidebooks with the same information is available at the BIA office, 204 Butler
Ave., Lancaster, and copies of the book were mailed to more than 100,000 Lancaster and Lebanon County households.
The 2024 Parade of Homes showcases more than $17 million in new home construction and remodeling in Lancaster and Lebanon counties, incorporating the latest in design, decorating and trends, including smart home technology. This year’s featured trends include a first-floor owner’s suite, flexible living space, neighborhood amenities, smart features and a 55 and up community. Each trend is assigned an icon with the home’s listing in the guidebook and website to help people find the features they are looking for.
Other elements in select homes include hidden storage solutions and flex rooms; a secondary, prep kitchen with a sink, dishwasher, microwave and beverage fridge; primary baths with freestanding soaker tubs and tile showers; a two-story family room with double chandeliers and a wall of windows; stone and shiplap fireplaces; coffered and tray ceilings; quartz countertops with oversized islands; wood beam-cased openings at the foyer; matte black appliances; interior and exterior statement lighting; and hardwood staircases with open stringers and high-contrast metal stair railings.
The homes were judged by a panel of building and industry experts, with awards presented at the annual Parade of Homes Gala on June 14. Homes were classified into divisions by price and judged with other homes in the same price division using a numerical scoring system, with awards for Best of Show, Kitchen, Bath, Interior Design, Exterior and Decorated. The top-scoring single-family and duplex homes each receive the Fulton Bank Award. Winners will be announced on the aforementioned Parade of Homes website.

“I Am Meow” is a book about a character with characterBY JEFF FALK
One of the keys to good writing is a compelling subject.
Bob Ruder had never written a book before, yet he wrote his first one in 15 minutes. It turns out cats make very good subject material, and besides, Ruder really had little say in it because his subject chose him.
“What (people have) always found interesting is that cats are so aloof,” said Ruder. “They meander to their own beat. They come and go as they choose. If they choose to love you, they will.”
Meow is the name of Ruder’s mature male cat and the subject of his book, “I Am Meow.” The book is nonfiction - because as they say, the truth is stranger than fiction - and it’s not necessarily a children’s book. Instead, it’s suitable for anyone who enjoys a good cat tale.
“It’s the story of a cat who chose to leave its previous home, meander across the countryside and find us as a new family,” said Ruder, who lives with his wife, Margie, in Manheim Township. “When we first got this cat, he was reluctant to come near us. But he finally came into our home. He was a skinny little guy when we first met him. The book is about this guy’s journey. I wanted to tell why this guy came to us.”
All of this cat drama went down during the summer of 2022. Ruder published “I Am Meow” in December of 2023.
“This cat chose to adopt us,” said Ruder. “Meow is an example of a free spirit. He chose to find a better life for himself. We gave him a new
life, but he’s brought joy to our life.”
Illustrated by local artist and former Hempfield High School art teacher Kelly Gallagher, “I Am Meow” is a 20-page, black and white publication that can also serve as a coloring book.
“We called him Meow because he says his name all the time,” said Ruder. “Maybe he thought we didn’t understand it, so he said it over and over until we got it right. The book is about who this cat happens to be.”
“I would say that the book’s primary audience is grandparents, because it could give them an opportunity to sit down with and spend time with their grandchildren reading a book,” he added. “There are few things more important than sharing a book with a child.”
Ruder has already sold more than 80 copies of “I Am Meow” and proceeds from the sale have gone to Pet Pantry of Lancaster County, 26 Millersville Road, Lancaster, which provides low-cost veterinary services. Ruder has ordered a second printing of “I Am Meow.”
“It is an absolute true story. That’s what made it interesting,” said Ruder, who retired from his work as the Manheim Township Middle School principal in 2004. “There are various messages to be seen in the book. People, regardless of their circumstances in life, can find joy if they wish to. It’s all about choices.”

SNAP announces new license plate
Spay Neuter Assistance Program Inc. (SNAP) invites members of the public to purchase a new official Pennsylvania license plate to raise awareness and funds for the spaying and neutering of cats and dogs. The plate was recently approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), and registration fees will be used solely to finance spay/neuter surgeries. The plate features a drawing of a dog and a cat along with the text “spay/ neuter saves lives.”
SNAP is an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in Pennsylvania
that helps people access reduced-cost spay and neuter surgeries for dogs and cats. SNAP notes that spaying and neutering these animals may help to reduce the number of dogs and cats that need homes and thereby reduce the number euthanized.
The new license plate is available through the Special PennDOT License Plate Form, available at http://SNAPofPA.org. The submission procedure is detailed on the aforementioned website. SNAP will forward the forms to PennDOT, which will process the requests and send customers their plates.

North Museum joins Museums for All program
Through a partnership with Museums for All, families or persons who hold an Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT), Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), or Pennsylvania EBT ACCESS card will now receive free admission to the North Museum of Nature and Science.
Museums for All is a national program that encourages families of all backgrounds to visit museums and build lifelong learning experiences by offering low- or no-cost admission to museums and cultural centers for people who receive food assistance benefits. More than 1,000 U.S. institutions participate in the program, which is an initiative of the Institute of Museum and Library Services and the Association of Children’s Museums.
EBT, SNAP, and ACCESS cardholders must present their cards in order for
them and their family members to receive free admission to the museum’s exhibits, permanent collections, and live animal room. The museum’s planetarium shows are available for a reduced admission price. Now in its 72nd year, the North Museum impacts thousands of local students and their families annually through its education initiatives in the museum, in the community, and at home. Programs include field trips, early childhood education programs, summer camps, STEM Sisters, the Science and Engineering Fair for middle and high school students, and many other educational programs designed to create access to free and reduced-cost STEM learning opportunities and strengthen the foundation of youths in the Lancaster community and beyond.
