Rotary Club recognizes Centerville Middle School students
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
On May 23, the Rotary Club of Lancaster recognized four Centerville Middle School (CMS) students with awards to highlight their demonstration of the organization’s values. Eighth-graders Casiah Clark, Saylor Hunt, Maddie Eiser and Carter Rossi were each given an award by representatives of the Rotary Club during the school’s annual awards ceremony.
Every year, recipients of the award are nominated by CMS teachers and staff members, who select students based on the Rotary Club’s guidelines. Students are chosen from the school’s two teams, the Minutemen and the Colonials; each student has exhibited traits such as good character and shown a willingness to serve others.
“(The Rotary Club of Lancaster) is proud to present these awards to exceptional students in recognition of honor, scholarship, service, patriotism, leadership and courage,” said Tony DeVito, president of the Rotary Club of Lancaster. “These are all qualities that the club holds dear. It was a real pleasure to meet such exceptional students.”
“I was very honored to get this award from a great organization that helps a lot of people,” said Hunt. “My family helped shape me to be the way I am, which I feel has helped me work hard in class and be a leader in my extracurriculars.”
As an international service organization, the Rotary Club’s mission is to bring community
leaders together to encourage humanitarian services and to set high ethical standards in all vocations. Members of the organization’s many chapters work to improve their local communities, and the Rotary Club of Lancaster frequently partners with Hempfield School District to enrich students’ educational
experience. Previous Rotary Club projects include supplying local elementary schools with reading support materials. In 2023, Rotary Club members assisted East Hempfield Township with the installation of new benches at Amos Herr Park in Landisville. For more information, visit www.lancasterrotary.org.

Exercise is good for the body. Play is good for the soul.
On the surface, the Chuckie Magee Flag Football and Cheerleading League for adults with disabilities is all about physical activity. But just below it resides elements of competition, socialization and fun.
“Everybody needs physical activity,” said Randy Samuels, a coach and the coordinator for the program. “A lot of these young people don’t get out as
much as others. Some aren’t very fast, but we get them out there running and having a good time. They learn teamwork. They get to socialize with their friends.”
Affiliated with Aaron’s Acres, the Chuckie Magee Flag Football and Cheerleading League has opened registration through the early days of July and the program is looking for players, sponsors and volunteers. The program consists of a 10-game schedule and games are played indoors on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to noon from Aug. 3 to

The program is open to individuals with disabilities ages 18 to 40 from Lancaster County. To register, go to www.aaronsacres. org/programs/chuckiemagee-flag-football-cheer leading-league.
“It’s like sandlot football,” said Samuels. “We show up and play. We make sure everyone scores and everyone kicks off. There’s no tackling, no pushing, no shoving. We don’t keep score. We make sure everyone has fun.”
“It’s hard to describe;
you’ve got to see it,” Samuels continued. “It’s two hours of action-packed football. There’s a lot of trash talking. These young people can give it good, but it’s all in good fun.”
Last year, the Chuckie Magee Flag Football and Cheerleading League consisted of two teams, 20 players and eight cheerleaders, affectionately referred to as “The Lancaster Sweethearts.” This year the program is hoping to grow the league to 40 players, enough for four teams.
“A lot of these young people want to play football,” said Samuels. “They can’t play football, so this
is our way to get them to play.”
During the winter months, Aaron’s Acres, which is headquartered at 1861 Charter Lane, Suite 114, Lancaster, offers sports programs for adults with disabilities in floor hockey, kickball and soccer.
“When kids with disabilities hit age 21, there’s not a whole lot out there for them to do,” said Samuels. “We know there are young
people out there who want to play football. Come join us. We want them to come out. We want to expand. We love what we do.”
The league is named for Chuckie Magee, a former Aaron’s Acres camper from Lititz who passed away in 2015. The program was started in his honor but only over the last three years has it become associated with Aaron’s Acres.

the Southern Tier region of New York; the Fusion Core from Morris County, N.J.; the White Sabers from Rochester, N.Y.; the Caballeros from Hawthorne, N.J.; and the Buccaneers.
The event will also incorporate performances from the Buccaneers Banner Brass and the Buccaneer Alumni Corps.
Competing groups will have 17 minutes to enter the field, perform their routine and exit the field. A panel of judges will score each group based on various factors, such as overall timing and the performance of its brass section and color guard.
The partnership between the Buccaneers and the Hempfield Band Booster Club began in
2018, when Bill Powers, then the Hempfield band director and a member of the Buccaneers, was looking for a location to hold an additional show after the Buccaneers’ home event in Reading.
“Before 2018, there hadn’t been a drum corps contest in Lancaster for many years,” said Rick Thompson, co-chair of the Buccaneers. “The number of people from Hempfield who participate continues to grow, and it’s added a lot of people to Buccaneer membership.” Thompson noted that the event gives students a chance to experience another side of marching band, as drum corps vary in their approach to performances and the age groups of
their members.
In addition to providing a new way for students to experience marching band, the Buccaneer Classic serves as a fundraiser for both the Buccaneers and the Hempfield Band Booster Club. Proceeds assist each organization with covering costs necessary to purchase equipment and continue its programs. The proceeds from the show are distributed between the Buccaneers and the Hempfield Band Booster Club; the funds given to the booster club assist the band with uniform and instrument expenses for its members. The keynote address was given by Brandon Gilanyi, dean of students and high school humanities teacher at Firm Foundations Academy (FFA), a homeschool hybrid program. He is also the associate pastor at All Saints Church in New Holland. Next year, at FFA, Gilanyi will introduce a new gap year program for students called the Vision and Vocation Institute (VVI). The goal of the program is to connect local businesses to future entrepreneurs while helping young adults navigate their vocational calling.
Eden Troyer was chosen as the class speaker. Eden, the daughter of Jeff and Robin Troyer, earned a Mason Dixon diploma. In the fall, Eden plans to attend Lancaster Bible College to study Christian thought in the humanities with a concentration of writing and rhetoric.

We start with happy, healthy cows who live at our American Humane Certified™ dairy and focus on top-quality ingredients that result in superior taste you can savor.
