tudents will have an opportunity to learn about science and math in actual university labs and classrooms during classes taught by college professors as part of Millersville University’s annual Summer Science Training Program (SSTP). The five-day session, offered by the College of Science and Technology, will take place from Monday, July 11, through Friday, July 15. During each session, students will be engaged in hands-on activities during three-hour workshops from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day in Millersville University’s Science and Technology Complex. SSTP provides students with learning opportunities that focus on intensive student-teacher interaction, advanced-level learning and research and problem-solving experiences. The program is open to academically talented students entering grade eight through grade 12 in the fall. “It’s meant to be for students
first-hand. “Another workshop that week is a forensic workshop where the processor will present lab-based experiments with DNA, and (the students) will isolate DNA and analyze it. It is a molecular biologybased experience,” explained Wagner. “I have a psychology professor talking about the teen brain. It (will be) about memory and hormones and how the brain functions and develops as a teenager.” He said that the diversity of subjects is what makes the program so popular “What I am most proud of is that it’s multifaceted. They are not just coming in for a week of biology or chemistry,” he said. “Our goal is to provide a resource for these kids in the community. There is an excitement and eagerness to learn.” A fee will be charged per student, which will cover supplies and instructional costs. Students are responsible for providing their own lunches. For more information about the program, visit www.millersville .edu/sstp, call 717-871-4292 or email sstp@millersville.edu.

who are excited about the idea of coming in (to the classroom),” said Ryan Wagner, co-director for SSTP. “Any student who has an inclination toward the sciences or an excitement about the sciences and a strong academic ability … those are the ones who will have the best experiences.” Subjects that will be covered during the week include psychology, chemistry, biology, Earth sciences, math and chemistry. “There is a diversity of different workshops and practical experiences,” said Wagner. “They get background information and context and then some instruction on using (the equipment) and there are activities and experiments. The content of the workshops ranges dramatically.” For example, in the math session, students will learn geometry and algebra, and they will take part in calculation exercises. “The students will still be engaged in an activity, but its classroom-based,” Wagner noted. One of the sessions will be a stream ecology workshop, where students will explore a stream
Elizabeth won the contest as a freshman this past school year. As the winner, she received a $200 cash prize. The theme of this year’s essay contest was “Why Is the Veteran Important?” The program is sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Established in 1947, the Voice of Democracy audio-essay program provides high school students with the opportunity to express themselves in regards to a democratic and patrioticthemed recorded essay. Each year, nearly 25,000 students in grades nine through 12 from across the country enter to win their share of the more than $2 million in educational scholarships and incentives awarded through the program. Registration for the 2022 Pennsylvania Make It With Wool Contest is open. Youths and adults who create with wool are encouraged to enter the state contest. Any youth or adult who sews, knits, or crochets garments with wool or other animal fibers is eligible to enter. All fabrics or yarns used in the body of the garment must be 60% or more animal fiber. Interfacings, linings, and trims do not need to be wool. The deadline for registration is Tuesday, Sept. 6. Several categories are available, including preteens ages 8 to 12, juniors ages 13 to 16, seniors ages 17 to 24, and made for others, wherein both the model and contestant may be any age. Judging will take place on Saturday, Oct. 1, in the PA Preferred Banquet Hall at the Farm Show Complex, 2300 N. Cameron St., Harrisburg. Expert judges will handle the garments and meet with the contestants. Judging will be based on several criteria, including the appropriateness of the garment to the contestant’s lifestyle, the garment’s fit and overall appearance, coordination of fabric/yarn with garment style and design, the contestant’s presentation, construction qual-
ity, creativity in design and use of wool, and how well the garment conveys/promotes the beauty, comfort, and versatility of wool. The winners of the junior and senior categories will be eligible to compete at the National Make It With Wool contest in Fort Worth, Texas, in January 2023. The Pennsylvania Sheep and Wool Growers Association and other donors provide the funding for prizes for the winners in each category. All who register will receive a piece of wool yardage. Other prizes will also be awarded. There is a registration fee, plus an additional testing fee per fabric or yarn used. For details and a registration form, contact Linda Siegel at 717-2741197 or linda@lebaweb.com. For more information, visit www.makeitwithwool.com.

The Fulton Forward Foundation, an independent, nonprofit private foundation funded by Fulton Bank, recently announced a $125,000 commitment to the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE), a global educational nonprofit focused on bringing the power of entrepreneurship to youths in low-income communities. The funds, which will be provided to the organization over a four-year period, will be used to support NFTE’s Aspiring Entrepreneurs Program. This initiative provides students from underresourced communities throughout the MidAtlantic, which includes the Pennsylvania, New York,
New Jersey and Virginia regions, with access to the courses of NFTE’s Entrepreneurship Pathway and several key activities and components of the NFTE student experience. According to NFTE CEO J.D. LaRock, students in the program will learn how to develop an original business plan for companies that can be launched in their own communities. Fulton’s grant and partnership with NFTE were announced at the MidAtlantic: Philadelphia Metro Youth Entrepreneurship Challenge on June 9 in Philadelphia, where student finalists pitched their businesses to a panel of judges. Fulton Bank president and
COO Curtis Myers served as a VIP Finals judge and presenter at the event, which was co-sponsored by Fulton Bank. Also participating were Scott Snyder, a mem-
ber of the Fulton Financial Corporation board of directors, and Smokey Glover, senior vice-president/retail sales leader at Fulton Bank.
Participants in the presentation included (from left) Smokey Glover, J.D. LaRock, Curtis Myers and Scott Snyder.

Typically, Promise Players, which was formed in 1995 by church member Doreen Creighton, performs at its home theater at Lampeter Church of the Brethren. “The church location was not ready for the crowds we get for the performances,” Strawser said. “Rawlinsville Camp Meeting came to mind, which has an open-air tabernacle.” Each year, he noted, a local charity benefits from the Promise Players’ performances. This year’s beneficiary will be Rawlinsville Camp Meeting. More information about the facility is available at www.rawlinsvillecamp.com. Strawser noted that the theater board chooses the play. “We look at family-type plays and musicals. ‘Smoke on the Mountain’ was off-Broadway for a few years back in the 1990s, so its rights are more expensive,” said Strawser. “One of our audience members came to Doreen a few years ago and (suggested) the play and ... the benefactor has paid for the rights - an anonymous donor.” A suggested minimum donation will be payable at the door. Children age 12 and under may bring a canned good or pay a nominal fee. The food items will be donated to the Blessings

Thursday, July 14, through Sunday, July 17. Performance times will be at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights and at 2:30 p.m. for the Sunday matinees. The play will be staged rain or shine at the covered outdoor theater space at Rawlinsville Camp Meeting, 475 Clearfield Road, Holtwood. According to cast member Tim Strawser, who is also the director, the play was scheduled to be performed two years ago but was shut down in 2020 four days before opening night. “After a two-year wait due to COVID-19 precautions, we are pleased to be able to offer this long-anticipated show,” he stated. The play, set in June 1938 in North Carolina, tells the story of the singing Sanders family, which, after a five-year hiatus, is set to perform its traditional and bluegrass gospel songs at a Saturday Night Gospel Sing at the local Baptist church. Because the family is running late, the pastor stalls the best he can. Finally, the family members arrive, and they begin their first musical number. The audience is introduced to the various family members. who share testimonies about their beliefs, which leads to some funny stories.
The Promise Players will stage “Smoke on the Mountain,” a musical comedy. rea eA u g ro -B
